Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about HEX.

What holidays/events are celebrated site-wide on HEX?

We celebrate all holidays that are in the books, although we may sometimes recognize other holidays.

What is the time zone on HEX? Can I change this?

The time zone on HEX for everyone is United States Central Standard Time (GMT -6). Most users, when planning something, will say something like, "Let's do this at 8 AM HEX time." That way, all users can go by HEX time to meet up, rather than worrying about everyone's separate time zones. For that reason, there is no option to change the time zone. HEX's current time and date can always be found at the top of every page just below the banner (on desktop view) or by clicking the "i" symbol in the top left corner (mobile view).

Why are there Google Ads on HEX?

HEX costs thousands of dollars to run each year due to server costs, upgrades, and other miscellaneous expenses that come up. With help from the Donations Program, we only have to rely on Google Ads to gather the money needed to run the site, rather than posting a ton of ads from other ad networks everywhere like other sites.

I didn't get my activation email! Help!

If you haven't received your activation email, be sure to check your spam/junk folder, as well as your inbox, as sometimes the emails go there. If you still cannot locate it, please post in the Activation Issues thread in the Questions forum, and staff will manually activate your account.

How do I get sorted? What can I do if I hate my House?

After your account has been verified and activated, the Sorting Hat will appear at the top of your screen. Click it to fill out the sorting application. If you have trouble with the app, please contact anyone on the About Us page. The Sorting Hat may take some time to decide which House to place you in, so please be patient. You are generally sorted within 24-48 hours after submitting your application. Once you have been sorted, click the event under the Events icon (the Quidditch goal hoops icon at the top right) to see your House!

While we feel that the Sorting Hat chose the correct House for you when you were sorted, we understand that you may not feel the same way. If you truly feel that you belong in a different House, you may switch your House by participating in the Donations Program. Please note that if you do decide to switch Houses, you must stay in the new House you've selected for at least three months before you are allowed to switch again. Choose wisely!

What are random events (REs)? How come I am not getting any?

Random events, or REs, are... well, events that happen randomly. They are messages that will appear at the top of the page on HEX. Sometimes they will be accompanied by gifts or surprises. It's all about luck, so if you're not seeing them, just keep looking - sooner or later, you will! All REs are coded to benefit users equally, meaning there is no way another user has a greater chance than you.

How come some people have titles? How do I get one?

A forum title (titles under your username) can either be granted by the site, usually given to users who hold positions on HEX, or acquired through certain packages in the Donations Program. Some people might also earn temporary forum titles through various area incentives or site-wide events.

Who are the Admins? What is a Moderator, Global Moderator, Staff Member, etc.?

Moderators and Site Staff are volunteers who take care of specific forums and their users. They create site activities and handle any rule breaks that may occur. They may be compensated for their time only in the form of our on-site currency, Galleons. Moderators who help manage the site as a whole are known as Site Staff.

HEX Site Staff consists of four different levels of volunteers who keep the site running smoothly and lead efforts to bring fresh and exciting content to users. These roles are Administrators, Staff Members, Junior Staff, and Global Moderators. Although their specific duties vary, all members of Site Staff help moderate the site as a whole, ensuring that the Site Terms are being followed and discussing appropriate actions to take when rules are broken, such as handling forum reports. For a more comprehensive breakdown of these roles, check out the Site Positions page.

Wow, those jobs sound so cool. How do I become a Moderator, Global Moderator, Admin, etc.?

It simply would not be possible to keep HEX running as smoothly as it does without the numerous volunteer moderators who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep contests going, forums active, and more. Each area on the site has its own process for hiring its volunteer moderating team. If you are interested in helping out, keep an eye on the homepage! Many of our volunteer forum moderator positions are filled via applications held in the specific area that is hiring and are often shared on the homepage. Forum moderators who go above and beyond for the site by being responsible, helpful, and following the rules are then sometimes rewarded with a promotion to Global Moderator.

I get emails from a @hexrpg email address that ask me for information or for me to open an attachment.

We will NEVER ask you for account information via email. Ever. We will also never send any attachments to you through email, so never open them. It is very easy for someone to send fake emails pretending to be us with our email address, so please be careful.

I have been hacked! Someone stole my password!

Please make sure you never give your password out to ANYONE. This includes family and friends as well as Moderators, Global Moderators, Junior Staff, Staff Members, and Admins. If you give out your password, your account may be vulnerable because you do not know if someone else has access to your account. If someone else knows your password, change it immediately. However, users are rarely, if ever, "hacked". This is just the conclusion they immediately jump to when they've misplaced or forgotten their password or given it out to someone who has used it maliciously. It is exceedingly difficult to actually hack HEX because of the security measures in place, and if someone did hack HEX, it is doubtful they would steal a user's password. As such, if you lose your password or can't log in, see the Lost Password page or use the Contact Form to reach out to Site Staff.

How do I take classes? And how do I get a career?

Classes are generally in session from the beginning of September until June. Register for classes, pick up your books and supplies, and then head to the classrooms to see your homework. If the school term has ended, never fear! Oftentimes, summer classes are offered, so watch out for them. Additional information and a Magical Education F.A.Q. can be found in the Headmaster's Study.

Earning enough points from homework will move you up a year. As a graduate student (after seventh year), you are able to earn careers, one per year. These careers reflect jobs found in the wizarding world, and they come with exciting perks. Check out the Careers Hub for additional information.

I would like to try roleplaying. Where can I do so?

There are many forums throughout the site where you can roleplay, or RP, and even some that are exclusively for roleplaying! One such forum is RP Central, which can be used for roleplaying all kinds of different fandoms, and the RPC Lounge, which is a great place to look for RP partners and plan a roleplay together. If you are new to roleplaying, the RP Teaching Center has many great resources for learning roleplaying tips and tricks. In addition, users may also use some of the less-visited forums to have more privacy for their roleplays. Try checking out the sub-forums of forums like the Entrance Hall or Main Yard!

While HEX is primarily an RP site, it is not fully immersive. This means in many forums, users are likely to be chatting with each other as themselves and not as a character. It's always a good idea to make it clear with your roleplaying partners when you are posting "in character" and when you are not!

How do I get rare items?

There are a number of ways to earn Galleons (site currency) on HEX. There is even a handy guide on How to Make Money!

Rare items may be traded for, found in auctions, or sometimes given out as random events (REs) during holidays or other special site events. More often than not, though, you will probably have to search out users who own these items and negotiate privately.

Oh no! I just got scammed in some type of trade! What do I do?

Please report the user who scammed you to a member of Site Staff on the About Us page so that we can investigate it. It is not likely you will get the object or money you traded back, though. Per the Merchanting Guidelines, all transactions are buyer beware, and Site Staff will not be held responsible for any transactions between users that are based on any form of trust trading. Any buying, selling, or trading of items and/or Galleons for real-world goods or services is strictly prohibited. A word of advice: always be vigilant about these types of things. Make sure you trust the users you are trading with!

What are all these codes and error messages?

If you are seeing errors, please first visit the Errors and Glitches thread found in the User Experience forum, also known as the Atrium. The first post of that thread should have a list of recently reported errors, but we also suggest reading the last page or two of the thread to see if your error has already been reported. If your error has already been listed, please refrain from listing it again - the programmers keep the thread on watch and already know of the error and have added it to their list to work on. If you do not see your error in the first post or the last few pages, please report it in as much detail as possible, including screenshots if you have any, so we can start working on a fix!

I have a great idea for a new feature/improvement for HEX! Who do I send it to?

If you have a great idea, you can share it in one of the Suggestions threads in the User Experience forum (the Atrium). PLEASE check to see if your idea is already posted before actually posting it. If your idea is already posted, you can reply to it with your thoughts on the idea as a whole. There are no guarantees on whether or not we will use it, though, and we are not required to compensate anyone if we decide to use their idea - although that is not entirely out of the question.

My question isn't on this list. Where should I go next?
