Site Survey

6:48 pm - HEX Staff

As many of you have noticed, HEX is striving toward becoming a more diverse and welcoming site - for all. In doing this, we openly acknowledge that while we want to do what is best for our site, we cannot speak for everyone. As such, we would love to hear from each of you so that we can do our best to make informed decisions about what you, our users, want to see.

If you are interested, head to this thread to find out how you can contribute!

New Publication Applications!

2:11 pm - Zoe

[insert publication name] is catchy, right? I don't know about you, but I think that's the perfect name for a publication. ...no? Okay, well, we're working on it. In the meantime, I'm sure you're wondering what I'm rambling on about. As a result of a recent idea proposed by the lovely Marv (Marvinater123), site staff has decided that this site could use another publication. However, not just any publication, but a LGBTQ+ publication. We know that many of our users belong to this community and/or they are allies of this community. However, in order to get this publication up and running, there are a few crucial parts that we need. Writers, for one. An assistant editor (or two...) for another!

Interested? I hope so!

To find out how YOU can join the team, check out this thread! Don't take too long though, as applications end on July 15th at 11:59 PM HEX time!

Summer Classes Have Returned!

2:17 am - Zoe

For those of you who were on HEX in years prior, you may remember summer classes. If not, well... surprise! Although the official term has ended and your books are likely stashed away somewhere deep within your trunk, we thought that everyone could use a little more educational fun. Thanks to some of our fantastic Magical Education moderators, you can look forward to six more weeks of summer learning.

Since these are summer classes, they do not offer House points. However, you will be well rewarded with shiny galleons for your efforts. The amount will depend on how many questions you get right, so be sure you're reading thoroughly! Are you ready? Click here to dive right in and get started!

Please note that we will be offering three classes, with each class consisting of three lessons. You will only have two weeks to complete the lessons. However, there will be no make-up homework, so time is of the essence.

First Steps

5:13 pm - John

Dear HEX Community,

These past few months have been incredibly challenging for all of us, bringing to light issues that have been swept under the rug for far too long. Issues that have uniquely and unjustly targeted a large proportion of our userbase for the entirety of their lives. While here at Hogwarts Extreme, we as site staff have always strived to provide an inclusive, diverse, and safe space for all of our users, the honest truth, as many of you have recently pointed out, is that we still have a lot to learn. We want to take this time to, as a whole, acknowledge our privilege in not having to regularly think about these unjust issues, for no other reason than our lives, unlike many of yours, have not depended upon being constantly vigilant. We recognize that, despite our best intentions, we have failed to make HEX a safe haven for all, and for that we deeply, genuinely apologize. There is no excuse.

That said, we want to emphasize that we are committed to making this site a safe space for everyone. We have heard your voices and are not taking any of your concerns lightly. We see you, we hear you, and we want to thank all of you for taking the time to help educate and work alongside us to make HEX the most supportive environment it can be. While we know we cannot erase our problematic post from yesterday, we hope that, through our actions (starting with this apology), we can earn back your trust and prove to you all that we value your safety above all else. In this vein, if any of you have any suggestions for us regarding how we could better word our stances or support diverse lives on HEX, please do not hesitate to share that advice with us. We want to continue learning and growing as unconditional advocates for all of you.

Regarding the specific issue at hand, as many of you know, J. K. Rowling has repeatedly made a slew of problematic statements against transgender people, the most recent of which were posted earlier this week. We cannot and will not avoid taking a firm stance against this discriminatory rhetoric any longer. It is HEX's official stance that, while J.K. Rowling may have created this universe and, in so doing, given us all a reason to come together, we wholeheartedly do not condone her transphobic comments and will be working towards revisiting our terms to reflect this stance. Regardless of Rowling's intention, her comments are hurtful and discriminatory; as such, we cannot permit similar rhetoric to exist on HEX without severe, swift consequences.

Further, we believe that every person, regardless of gender, sex, race, or any other identifiable trait is precious and deserving of love and respect. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary identities are valid. Going forward, any comments made that discriminate against these people or serve to diminish their legitimacy as humans with inherent rights will not be tolerated on HEX. Whilst we understand that everyone is free to have their own opinions, we must also stress that these opinions will not be welcome when used to discriminate against any individual or group of individuals, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

HEX, and the Harry Potter community, were built with one core value in mind: inclusivity. The Harry Potter series has taught us many valuable lessons, and despite the actions and comments of the franchise's author, these inherent values still stand. We will not let Rowling's comments diminish and tarnish the world we have created together. We now, as we always have, want to strive to keep this big, magical, diverse family alive, well, and safe. As such, we will be revisiting how to better train Site Staff to be more sensitive and attuned to the unique needs of our diverse userbase. If any of you have suggestions for this training, please do not hesitate to share those with us as well.

We know actions speak louder than words. Going forward, any message (including avatars, random bursts, posts, owls, etc.) that is discriminatory in nature will be removed, per the site terms. This includes messages that show support for a group or entity that is discriminatory in nature, such as known hate groups. If you come across any such content that we have not removed, please report it; we will act as swiftly as we are able. If you are ever unsure what we will or will not allow, you are welcome to contact Site Staff and ask for clarification prior to posting at any time. We are aware that some may find this to be censorship; however, as we and others have stressed, lives are at stake here. Black lives matter. Trans lives matter. And we will do everything we can to prove to you all that we value these lives and want HEX to be a safe, welcoming home for all of them.

This is just one step in our goal to make HEX a safer and more welcoming place for all. Please keep this thread on watch as we will use this thread to post updates as they come.

"Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are." - Emma Watson

Where We Stand

7:00 pm - HEX Staff

Hogwarts Extreme is, at its core, a website about Harry Potter and a place for all those who love it. We were given that foundation by J.K. Rowling creating a magical starting point for so many to enter the world of witches, wizards, and wix. But over time, as with all art, the Harry Potter universe has grown immensely beyond the pages of Rowling's books. With that universe, the HEX community has grown as well - into a place of limitless possibilities, into a place of community, and for so many, into a place of family.

In light of recent news surrounding Rowling, we as HEX Staff wanted to take a moment to ensure our users that HEX is a place of inclusivity. We welcome all users - those of all races, those of all genders, those of all sexual orientations, and so much more - with open arms. And in doing so, we are committed to making HEX an environment where those who we have welcomed feel safe to be their truly magical selves.

We welcome a diverse community of many opinions on HEX, but all opinions must remain respectful of other users' existence. Discrimination has no place here, and discriminatory statements made on HEX will not be taken lightly. If someone or something on HEX has made you feel unsafe, please reach out to a Staff member at any time. Please also know that the report feature can be used at any time and that all reports are taken very seriously by HEX Staff.

"If you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that." - Daniel Radcliffe

Publications Management - June Update

12:06 am - Samuel

Who doesn't love the Weasleys? The May issue of the Daily Prophet had many wonderful articles about them, and we'd like to keep the Weasley theme going by asking you for your thoughts on this unique family. On a very different note, last month's issue of The Quibbler had us all pondering falling objects, and now it's time to discuss them.

Speaking of, things have been randomly falling around Hogwarts! ...Well, you might not be surprised to learn that Peeves is actually behind this mischief. We need your help picking up the Plummeting Parchments.

As always, you could win some great prizes in The Newsstand Quarterly Raffle by participating!

Ministry of Magical Arts :: June Update

4:44 pm - ragna lokisdottir

MoMA is taking a step back into the past this month! A ... rather large step. Alright, so we just wanted to visit with dinosaurs, OK? They're cool! While we're all out gambolling around and trying to make a velociraptor a pet, we've got a couple of thoughts on our mind! The first one is that we would love to see what you think a dinosaur would like like from the fossils left behind in our Graphics Challenge. For the Writing Challenge, we want to see what goes through either a prey or a predators mind when they're in conflict!

Naturally, that's not all that we've got going on this month! Check out the watch threads below for other activities that are happening! Now, if you'll excuse us ... We just stumbled across a Tyrannosaurus rex and need to get out of here!

Recondite Roles is just the place to talk about the quietly mentioned characters and their unique, but important, place in the series. Finally, see the greatest of technology mix with the magical unknown in Getcha Upgraded.
