Quidditch: Eagles vs Snakes

9:09 pm - dagaz

It's once more time to take to the skies as Ravenclaw and Slytherin ferociously duke it out as Spring approaches. Stiff blades of grass awaken in the late morning warmth, flowering buds sprout from the earth like hungry koi gasping for breath, likely blood to be shed permeates the air as it lingers along a salty breeze from the lake. Make your way down to the Quidditch Pitch and cheer for the Eagles and Snakes!

Major Sitewide Upgrade

7:13 pm - John

HEX has now been successfully upgraded to PHP 7. This is something many thought was impossible given that some of our code is over seventeen years old. What this means for everyone is even faster page loads, better security, more efficiency, and the possibility for lots of new features in the future that wouldn't have been possible before. This is a major step forward for the site, and I am excited to see what is to come of it.

Like any major software upgrades, inevitably there will be an increase in bugs. Some things may all of a sudden no longer work that did just yesterday. If you experience any new bugs, please report them in this thread. We will work as quickly as possible to get the issues resolved and appreciate your patience in the process.

I want to give a big thank you to Steven, who led the process to make this a reality and put in major hard work and time to make this happen. I also want to thank David, who also has spent a ton of time going through our old scripts and making them ready for the upgrade. Lastly, I want to thank all of the Global Moderators, Junior Staff, Staff, and Administrators that tested this new version and helped work out many of the initial bugs.

Thank you!

The Teaching Center is Hiring!

11:23 pm - Cait

The Teaching Center is looking to add more moderators. Moderators are not Mentors and thus will not be working one-on-one with users, but rather are the creators of the monthly contests and watch the Teaching Center forum for adherence to HEX and Teaching Center rules. If you are creative, understand roleplaying basics, and want to help other users increase their roleplaying abilities, then this might be the position for you. Please see our application here; all apps are due March 9.

The large voice of Hagrid could be heard yelling, clearly frustrated over something. As you turn the corner, the half-giant comes into view. Power of Four

12:08 am - HEX Staff

Ah yes, love! A very powerful force. Love can drive us to do all sorts of feats. It can also force us to slow down and smell the flowers or to speed up and view the world around us at hyperspeed. Love comes in many forms, of course. This time of year, we're all accustomed to seeing things that remind us of romantic love, such as intensity and passion. This year, however, we bring you something a little different. Your founders - Godric, Helga, Rowena, and Salazar - have decided that we should celebrate platonic love, especially our love for not just our own Houses, but those of our friends as well. Join us here, as well as in all four Houses, as we spread the love through the Power of Four. While you do so, be sure to keep your eyes peeled; you never know what you might stumble across!

Magical Archives

12:40 pm - Enyra

The Magical Archives once again are offering a variety of contests and discussions to explore the Harry Potter books and companion novels.

If you are still looking for an outlet for your creativity, why not design a fairy tale book cover in Coveted Covers? Or, if you prefer to write, make your way over to Memoirs of a Trolley Witch and tell us all about what you think the job of the Trolley Witch in the Hogwarts Express entails. You could also show or tell us what you think Kreacher endured when drinking the Draught of Despair in An Elf's Nightmare.

These are only some examples of what the Magical Archives have to offer. There are plenty of House Points waiting to be yours. If you don't want to miss any news in the future, don't forget to put the Watch Thread on watch! In addition, the Table of Contents provides a comprehensive overview of all ongoing activities. Participation in any of these will earn you a chance in winning the Book of Records!

The RP Factor 2019

12:00 am - Lucas

A labyrinth of stainless steel walls towers above you, reflecting a harsh fluorescent light whose origin you cannot detect. The air is thick against your exposed limbs, humid, heavy, chafing. You run forward along the seemingly endless pathways, raw grains of earth crawling between your toes like specks of sandpaper. Anxiety buzzing in your veins, you quicken your stride, running until your lungs burn and your senses are reduced to the frantic beating of your heart as its mantra fills your ears. The next turn looms closer, and the gasp that snakes its way between your lips almost obscures the guttural undertone now interrupting the sound of your heartbeat. It almost sounds like... cheering. You barrel around the intersection, your fingers grazing the sleek metal of the nearest wall, and feel your legs collapse at the sight before you.

What happens next, you might be wondering? Unfortunately, I don't have that answer, as the possibilities are endless and lie within the minds of HEX's role-players. Whether it be creating worlds so vivid you can feel the foreign waters crashing against your feet, or writing characters so real you feel you have known them all your life, role-playing demands a lot from those who dare to attempt it. While the results can often be marvelous, filled with dark, poignant, and breathtaking tales, they can also fall a bit flat, the world they are meant to portray crumbling beneath the reader's uninterested eyes. Do you think you have what it takes to enthrall readers with your role-plays, to transport them to other worlds the likes of which they've never seen? Perhaps it's time that you turn that last corner and find out.
