Project Ink

5:02 pm - Xeneixian

That's right, Project Ink is back for another year of fantastic writing!

For those of you who don't remember Project Ink from last year, this is a writing competition. Our main goal is to promote and reward talented, creative writers on HEX. We have come up with 7 contrasting tasks which we will use to put them to the test. We hope to stimulate growth as a writer and introduce them to mediums and topics that they wouldn't generally explore.

Everyone is welcome to apply, but only the best, most creative, most adaptive writers will survive. If you think you have what it takes and want the chance to win not only prizes and prestige, but also the last house point rewards for this school year.

Check out the application, prizes, and all the other important stuff RIGHT HERE in the Role-Play Central.

The Daily Prophet: April 2011

12:51 pm - MuggleBornMegan07

This month's issue of the Daily Prophet features some brand new writers. With them we have been able to expand the coverage of the wizarding world! You will find this issue to be rather eyeopening as we will satisfy your curiosity on the Prisoners of Azkaban, enlighten you on the truth of the Easter Bunny, and give you a first look at "Potter Park" opening in Godric's Hollow. You will also find an interview with HEX's own, Sapphire Smoke, discussing the new and improved Quidditch coming to HEX that you wont find anywhere else! Read all of this, and more, in The Daily Prophet!

If you have any general concerns about the this month's issue of the DP, please direct them at either MugglebornMegan07, or one of the publication staff members, Theny, Tori Tendleswift, or Aiden Jakorr. Thanks!

Want to write a Random Event?

10:50 pm - Tori Tendleswift

In case you're out of the loop: Random Events (AKA RE's) are those silly little messages that pop at you while you're prancing around HEX. They're short, they're funny, they're weird, and they make you smile. With all the changes on HEX, we thought it might be nice to write up some new RE's as well. I volunteered for the job originally, but then thought, "Hey, I could pawn some of this work off on the users!"

That's where you come in.

For more information about how YOU can write an RE to be featured on HEX, click HERE. Good luck to everyone, and I look forward to reading your entries!

RPC Teaching Center - Looking For Tutors

9:04 pm - sportzgrl33

The RPC moderators are preparing to get the Teaching Center up and running again. We are now looking for tutors who are willing to be the teachers in the center. Tutors have to be able to role play as well as be able to teach someone else how to role play. The teachers need to be patient, understanding, and hard workers.

If you're interested and think you fit the description, fill out the application below and owl it to the RPC Mods account before April 27th.

How many hours you're normally on HEX per week
Will you have any RL commitments that will take you off of HEX for weeks at a time?
How much experience do you have with roleplaying? Provide a sample of a roleplay you have on Hex (it doesn't have to still be active).
Why should I pick you?
Please correct the following paragraph:
Sarah wakled into the room and sat down on the chair. *Hi there" she said to the people that were around there listening and waiting for her. Sarah smiles at everyone. 'HEllo' they all said back.

Do you have questions or concerns? Just owl Nicole, Sam, or Holly. We will start taking students soon after tutors have gone through training, so keep on the lookout for more news!

All HEX mods are welcome to apply.

Quidditch News and Referee Applications

4:44 pm - Xeneixian

Our latest Quidditch Beta has ended in success, and I want to send out a GIANT thank you to everyone who helped with it. The new rules can be found here. Not only that, but Quidditch will indeed be returning to HEX next term. "NEXT TERM?! THAT'S SO FAR AWAY!" Ah, but wait until you hear the best news - there's going to be a tournament this summer! More info on that will be posted as it becomes available, but all the houses should start getting their teams ready.

But in order to get ready for the summer tournament, we first must have a roster of Quidditch referees. In order to apply, check out the full application in this thread. Applicants should be versed in the English language, have a love for Quidditch, and should make it a point to learn the new rules inside and out.

Also, keep your eyes on the lookout for a new feature that will be arriving soon that will allow everyone to host and ref their own Quidditch matches!

Major Updates

9:51 pm - John

With enrollment being closed for a few months, the staff and global moderators have had a lot of time to plan for upcoming features/additions/updates to the site as a whole. We have also constantly been looking at feedback from everyone on the site. Many things are laid out that are sure to be exciting for the site. If you notice a favorite feature missing from the navigation, don't worry -- from this day on, updates will happen quite frequently.

First of all, congratulations is in order for many people. Congratulations to Adam (Xeneixian) for being promoted to staff member! Also, congratulations to Calen (Caleneledh), Holly (HP Angel), Jade (Marluxia), and Sam (Samantha Bradley) for being promoted to the global moderator position! Lastly, congratulations to Rima (Anacrusis) for being promoted to the Administrator position. All promotions are well deserved by all.

Second, the overall design/layout of Hex as a whole has been completely re-vamped. You will notice a brand new menu format/structure with new categories and links. Many links have been moved, so take a minute to familiarize yourself with the new menu. The site as a whole has now been widened to 1024px. The forums have been updated to reflect this. Wider forum layouts will be rolling out for the larger areas of the site over the next few days, courtesy of Adam (Xeneixian) and Chase (Aiden Jakorr). The new site layout was made by Josh (HPfanextrm).

Third, enrollment has now re-opened. Any visitor that signed up for a notification has been notified. Enrollment will now remain open indefinitely.

Fourth, the lottery has officially returned. It is very different this time, so be sure to read all of the info about it here! There are now two rare items every month that will be given out each week. Anyone that purchases a ticket and activates it through their inventory will be eligible for either of the rare items. Tickets can be purchased in Flourish and Blotts. Remember, you must activate your ticket in your inventory for it to be eligible for the week. At the end of every week, all activated tickets are void and activations start over. You may purchase as many tickets as you'd like. So for this week, the lottery will be reset this Sunday at 3 PM.

Again, all lottery info is located here. Be sure to read it to fully understand how it works.

Stay tuned for more updates. More to come very soon.

The Whisperer: March 2011 in April

12:43 am - Xeneixian

Yesterday, in the fine mist of April Fool's day, the Whisperer writers were all surprised to find that we had been catapulted back to the 90's surrounded by Spice Girls music and ancient television shows. Some of you may be thinking, 'OMG THAT'S SO HORRIBLE!' but in all honestly, we were thrilled. We leave you with many a tale about our adventures, explaining in great detail why Xena is better than sliced bread AND Hercules, why you should never live in Sunnydale if you are male, and how to have the 90's television costume party of your dreams. Not to mention you can get some quality nostalgia from our 90's kid checklists, and who doesn't love the fuzzy feelings of deja vu, regardless of their prankster origins?

You can read the issue here!

If you have any questions or concerns about the content in this issue of The Whisperer, please contact Porcelain_Doll, or one of the moderators in charge of HEX Publications: Theny, Tori Tendleswift, or Aiden Jakorr. Thank you!

Site Rating Update - April Fools!

12:07 am - John

Two months ago, HEX changed to a PG-13 rating. However, after an overwhelming number of complaints from both parents and users alike, we have decided to revert to a more cautious site rating. We want to look at this as an opportunity to reach Harry Potter fans of all ages; to promote and facilitate a positive and pleasant atmosphere where everyone feels free and welcome. That is why, after much discussion amongst the HEX Staff, Hogwarts Extreme will now be G Rated.

There are going to be a number of updates to accommodate the new rating to include the following.

Enrollment, Sorting and Azkaban:

- The opening of enrollment has been indefinitely postponed in efforts to keep bad influences off the site. The invite system will continue to ensure that only appropriate users enroll.

- Slytherin house has been permanently disbanded. Due to the negative characteristics associated with the house and its association with dark/evil characters, the HEX Staff deemed that it was not conducive to a positive environment. All previous Slytherin users have been resorted into the three remaining houses. All questions regarding this change should be directed towards Anacrusis.

- Azkaban will now be referred to as 'time out'.

Forum Updates:

- Knockturn Alley will now be referred to as 'Sunshine Alley'.

- The Forbidden Forest will now be referred to as the 'Friendly Forest'.

- The Shrieking Shack will now be referred to as the 'Sharing Shack'.

Item Updates:

- In accordance with the above, all Slytherin items are going to be deleted. For buy-back information, please see the thread in Diagon Alley.

- All prank items will be disabled. Until then, all item actions have been disabled while they're being sorted out. Prank stores have also been closed.

- All house swords have been modified so that they are suitable for all ages.

- The Dark Mark Pendant is now the Glitter Pendant

Terms Updates

- The site terms have been updated to feel more inclusive and welcoming as well as to conform to the new G rating. Everyone will please review them before proceeding.

- New words have been added to the site filter, which is now mandatory for all users regardless of age. In general, phrases and words which promote a negative atmosphere have been censored.

We want to thank everyone who participated in the PG-13 experiment, but it had become increasingly clear over the past eight weeks that things were not working out. Thank you for understanding these new changes and for accommodating Harry Potter fans of all ages. It is our mission to be the most inclusive and welcoming site for fans of the series.
