"The problem with winter sports is that--follow me closely here--they generally take place in winter." - Dave Barry

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere like myself, you are coming into the middle of winter. January is often the coldest time of the year around where I live. The last few years have given us some crazy cold weather and some extra snow, but winter brings more than just the cold and the snow. Winter provides the perfect environment for some exciting and season specific activities.

Obviously I'm talking about winter sports. Most people will think of various versions of skiing, skating and sledding at first and that's okay, because there are many variations of those three sports. But did you know, in the 2018 Winter Olympics, I was surprised to find some sports that I didn't even know existed. For example, the Biathlon, and the race done on cross country skis combined with some marksman shooting. Those wasn't the only other winter sports I have discovered in recent years, there are so many others.

Come and join our discussion about winter sports. Here are a few questions to get you started:

Have you ever played or performed a winter sport?
If you have, what got you into it?
Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
If you have, what got you into it?

Not really I have had a go at ice skating in the past, but I wasn't very good at it. I'm not particularly sporty and I hate the cold. I therefore prefer to watch winter sports on the TV. I have always loved figure skating and ice dance from a spectator point of view and grew up in Nottingham where Torville and Dean came from so when they got the perfect score for their Bolero routine in the Winter Olympics I felt so proud that they were local.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?

The last winter Olympics I discovered half pipe, and free style snowboarding and skiing I think the athletes who partake are incredibly barve as it seems a very dangerous sport but it is spectacular to watch. I don't know as I would want to be more involved in it other than from the view point of a spectator though.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?

No I wouldn't compete, too much of coward to try freestyling or halfpipe. I like my bones in tact thank you very much. I hate the cold so I'll stick to watching it on the TV.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?

Probably not. I'll stick to watching what someone else has created.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
Yes. I play ice hockey (goalie) and I ice skate.

If you have, what got you into it?
I have always loved both and wanted to learn how to do both. I learned how to skate at age 40 and started playing hockey a few n=months later.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
No. The other sports I am not interested in.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
Hockey yes. I play two games a week in hockey. Skating no...not good enough to compete.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?[/color=transparent]
I can't think of any other things for winter sports that aren't already being done.

I think Ski Ballet should make a comeback for the Olympics. It's hilarious and surprisingly impressive, but I'm concerned for the skiers' knees. Here's a video from YouTube:

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
I don't know if played or performed quite describes what winter sports that I have tried but I'm sure that it entertained someone I did try skiing three times and do enjoy going on the ice with skates.

If you have, what got you into it?
Skiing - a very persuasive combination of college roommates and classmates.
Iceskating - the love of rolling skating.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
I am not very well suited for sports at all because I'm klutzy, have inner ear problems (balance, nausea), and not so great vision. I would need to stick something that is an individual sport and does not change direction or has too many air-pressure changes. I'd also have to run by my surgeon as to whether it involves movement that would potentially undo his work (no heavy pushing, pulling, lifting and no squatting or anything with heavy impact). Given those criterion that shorter "cross country" ventures are the most fitting. I would say curling but no squatting and my knees are arthritic.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
No. Not only because of all the problems listed above but Houston in not close to anything with snow.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport?
I am not sure that I would unless it is one for older people with some physical problems.

And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
Uhm … some sort of punny name … and very gently.

I would love to 😍 but since i don't have the knowledge about winter sports, maybe I will just stick in trying other sports.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
Yeah, I've played a couple. I was never a part of a team or anything. It was just for fun.

If you have, what got you into it?
Well, I always thought ice skating was cool (no pun intended), so I was pretty excited to try it.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
Well, the ski ballet video that was posted above definitely looks interesting. 😂 I don't know if I would participate, but I do want to look into it more.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
No, I never have. I did it for fun.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
Maybe. I'm not a very sporty person, but it might be fun to create a whole new sport.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
I've tried skiing and been ice skating a couple of times, but I live on the West side of Australia so I don't exactly get the chance very often. I'm also absolutely terrible at keeping my balance while ice skating!

If you have, what got you into it?
I think the first time I went ice skating was for a friend's birthday party.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
I think I'd rather stay away from winter sports for the most part, I get cold rather easily and they seem to all be more painful than most sports.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
Definitely not.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
Maybe some type of competitive snowball throwing or something. I really like dodgeball, so some variation of that for winter would be cool.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?

Yes, play basketball. I’m on the JV team at my high school.

If you have, what got you into it?

All the fam was like “You’re tall you should play basketball” and I just shook my head because I was a dancer. I only wanted to be a dancer. It was my passion. My grandma and grandpa played basketball in high school and my mom played in college. They all wanted me to start.
I moved away from my friends and I had to start new. I couldn’t continue my dance training.
In fifth grade my friend said “Hey, let’s try out for basketball.” I was like since she’s doing it, I thought I might as well too. I loved it. I’ve been playing ever since. Though I’m a pretty good player I’m thinking of quitting junior year so I can focus on looking at colleges and applying and also so I can maybe participate in the musical.
I have too many interests and I can’t focus my attention to them all.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?

Yes, I was on an Alpine ski team for a few years. I also have done cross sountry skiing, ice skating, snow-showing, ice-fishing and sledding (snowmobiles).

If you have, what got you into it?

I live in a rural area, not much else to do, lol.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?

Not really. I like watching snowboarding though.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?

As I stated above I did compete in skiing.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?

I have never really thought about it. maybe snow sled jumpimg? Lol.

Has anyone seen a video of Extreme Croquet played in the snow?

Does that count as a “winter sport”? I would like to try it if I’m correctly dressed for the weather and in a location that has snow.

Have you ever played or preformed a winter sport?
No, I usually play in summer sports. I have done snowboarding a couple of times.

If you have, what got you into it?
I play it for fun, not a sport I'm into. I have friends who enjoy playing in the snow, so I just tag along.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
I was watching equestrian and I would like to learn how to ride horses. People were competing at the age of 50. It sounds like a good sport to retire into if I start now.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
Nope, I don't have one.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played
I think they already have snow boarding and that's a sport I would have created.

I’ve never played a proper winter sport, but I’ve always wanted to try skiing. My school used to go on ski trips every year to Austria, but I never went along on one (though I wish I had tried it now!). Obviously I would never have the skills to compete professionally, but it’d be a fun activity to try out.

I have done some snow tubing in my life, but I’m not sure if that counts as a sport.

I haven't really done any winter sports. Where I live we only get a light dusting of snow once or twice a year. There isn't really much of an opportunity to play winter sports. I did go to an ice rink a few times when I was little, but that was only when we went to the city. Now I think the nearest ice rink is about 2 hours away.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
As previously stated, they really aren't a big deal here so its not something I've ever looked into. I guess I like the look of figure skating, but that's only because it looks really good.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
We do have a tradition in my family. If it ever snows enough, we build a snowman and then use it for target practice. Maybe this could be made into a proper sport.

Have you ever played or performed a winter sport?
I have not done any winter sports competitively if that's what this is asking, but I did go ice skating one time with my parents. I'm not entirely sure if that counts.

If you have, what got you into it?
My parents took me.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
I'm not really the sportsy type of person. I'd be much more happy sitting down reading a good book, or playing video games.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
As said above, I'm not the sporty type. Though, I am quite competitive.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
I can't think of anything off the top of my head, boring I know.

Have you ever played or performed a winter sport?
Yes, I used to love winter, especially when it snowed.

If you have, what got you into it?
A friend of mine skied and invited me to a resort for the weekened. I had a great time and took up skiing for the rest of the winter.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?
I've read about Fat Biking (winter biking with fat tires). If I lived in an area that had lots of snow I might try it.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?
No, I never got involved in sports competition. I like to do sports for personal pleasure and exercise. I'm not much interested in competing.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?
If I were able? Sure, I would but I'm not very creative so I have no idea what I'd invent.

I did try ice skating once! I really loved the idea of just trying it! I had always loved watching ice skating on television and thought it looked fun! Much harder than it looks, but it was fun! I would love to try it again someday!

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with?

Ice Skating!

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?

No, I don't think I would compete. I think if It turned into something I competed in, then it would take the fun out of it.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?

If I was able, Possibly. If I did, It would be called Igloo Racing, where people race against the clock in the span of a certain amount of days to build igloos as fast as they can. They would have to be habitable, and include basic live in commodities. Bathroom, sleeping area, food area. And whoever makes the best igloo and survives in it wins 1 Million Dollars. LOL Ya'll that was the best I could do.

Have you ever played or performed a winter sport? Yes, I used to cross-country ski and telemark ski.

If you have, what got you into it? I enjoy being outside and hiking, so skiing was a good way to keep me going outside in the winter months.

Is there maybe a new winter sport that you have discovered that you would like to learn more about, or get involved with? Since I quit skiing, I've taken up snowshoeing. I can go right out my backdoor, the equipment is not very expensive and it gets me hiking in the winter months. There are other winter sports that I enjoy watching, though I don't partake of them.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport? When I skied I occasionally joined a team at work for night skiing dual slalom races. They were more fun than competitive, though.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played? My brain cells are failing me with this question. There are already so many winter sports around the world!

When I was about 7 or 8 my folks got me started in downhill skiing lessons here in California up at Mammoth Mountain and Snow Summit. LOVED IT!!! So fast, so free!!! But I don't know if I could do it now, my fear of heights has gotten sol bad I probably couldn't ride the chair lift up!!

I also dabbled for a college semester in Skating....also fun, also painful falling down on HARD ice...I love watching the Olympic skating and other of that sport's competitions: the drama, the skill and artistry, the costumes!!!

I have gone ice skating and I love it. I wish I could join an Ice skating group in my hometown, but I probably won't (I'm not that graceful)

Shovel Racing sounds fun, Although I already know a lot about It I would probably race down a hill with my friends on shovels.

Would you or do you compete in your chosen winter sport?

I don't compete and I don't think I ever will.

If you were able to, would you ever create a new winter sport? And if you did, what would you call it and how would it be played?

Yes. I would creating Ice Shaping. You skate on Ice to form shapes and the coolest shape wins.
