A myth is far truer than a history, for a history only gives a story of the shadows, whereas a
myth gives a story of the substances that cast the shadows.
- Annie Besant

When somebody mentions mythology, many people automatically think of Greek mythology. But did you know that countries and cultures all over the world have mythologies specific to them? Or that some mythologies have the exact same gods and goddesses known by different names?

Mythology is so much more than just gods and goddesses; it also includes places, creatures, and items. Some of our favorite books to read include some mythology within their pages. Even the Harry Potter books have bits of mythology scattered in them.

Come share with us your favorite mythologies. Here are a few questions to get the discussion started:

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?
- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?

One of my favourite myths are the stories of Merlin and Arthur. I would love to learn more about the Celtic background to them. I first read some of these stories in Morte D'Arthur by Mallory, but I have enjoyed the stories of Mary Stewart too. i think to study the myths and stories of the world would be very interesting because I would probably discover some historical overlaps.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?
I know quite a lot about some of the European mythologies, but I think it would be really interesting to learn more about Aztec or Mayan mythology. I know they had powerful gods that demanded human sacrifices on their great temples, and that they had winged serpents instead of dragons, but that's about it.

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
New Zealand mythology is centered around Papa (the earth mother) and Rangi (the sky father) and their children, the gods; taniwha (spirits/monsters/dragons of rivers, mountains, etc) and other native beasts; and human heroes, the most famous of whom is Maui (a bit different to the version in Moana).

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?
FRICK. YES. Greek mythology was literally my special interest as a kid and I started out majoring in classical studies at university. If I could just learn about different mythologies for my job I would in a heartbeat.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?

I think I would like to learn a bit more about Norse Mythology. I know a little bit, but I have a feeling that has been mostly contaminated by pop culture (T.V. and movies). Another big one for me would be to learn the mythology of Tolkien's MiddleEarth!

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?

I would say locally, Native American,, by blood, Greco-Roman.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?

I think that would be a fascinating job. But I am not sure I would be up for all the travelling involved. But the reading, heck yeah!

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?

I have read overview articles and even documentary videos about the basics of Ifa (Yoruba religion). I have known also the different streams of Ifa and their different requirements and standards, and also communal norms. With that being said, I am more keen to learn about Yoruba mythology - the patheon of Orisa.

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?

Some part of Philippine myths have been almost forgotten in our modern day country but remnants of them still endure the corrosion of time and impartiality.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?

I am very much interested in mythology since I was in my second year highschool. I had dreamt once that I am an outstanding historian, folklorist and mythologist and I have made a great contribution to academic, cultural and social progress through teaching, writing for newspapers and magazines and service in folkloric, mythological and cultural studies and even comparative religions.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?
I would love to learn about Mythical creatures and their habitats. I find mermaids and centaurs to be interesting. I also want to learn Indian myths and legends.

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
Cuban Mythology falls on Santeria. It is something I even practice now to a certain extent. Every saint has a desire and if you give them what they desire they return the favor for you.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?
Yes, It would be so interesting to learn the different cultures and myths and legends that surround the world.

One of the mythologies that I love the most in my own country is about Maui. i think this one is one I love the most is included in most Pacifica countries / islands. Its where Maui uses a hook to capture the sun and tether it to the moon.

If I were offered the job to study all mythological beings, then I would absolutely accept it. I love to learn about other cultures and hear about stories from the cultures! I find that it would be the perfect job for me.

Which mythology would you like to learn about?

I love learning about all types of mythology, to be honest. The ones that have captivated my imagination in the past have been Egyptian, Roman, and Greek mythology. I've recently started looking up Celtic mythology, which is also very fascinating. I think I would like to learn more about Norse mythology.

What mythology is specific to your culture or country?

I would say Celtic mythology is specific to Great Britain. We have a melting pot of mythologies as the Romans and Vikings have inhabited this land.

If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?

If it paid well and it allowed for exploration and adventure, then definitely! It would be extremely fascinating.

I really enjoy Greek mythology and learning about all the different gods and their powers and their legends. I have always researched it since I was a kid.

AS far as my culture I am Dominican/Puerto Rican so the closest thing we have is something called Santeria which is a Cuban mythology.

If I could get a job to get paid to learn and travel all over the world to learn about different cultures and their mythology I would take it.

Which mythology would you like to learn about?
I’ve studied Greek, Roman and Egyptian. I’d love to learn others. I’m really open for any.

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
We really don’t have any.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?
It would definitely be a dream job. It’s been a passion of mine for many years.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about? I would say I know a little about various ones, but I would love to make a more in depth study of Greek mythology.

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country? In America, there is a lot of Native American mythology, especially since different tribes have their own stories and there were countless tribes. I'm a European mix so I don't have any particular connection to any culture.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not? I would definitely be interested. Having a job where I got to continuously learn would be appealing to begin with, but one where I got to experience different cultures sounds even better.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?
I would love to learn more about Celtic Mythology. I love it so much!!

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
None are specific to America, but Greek and Roman mythologies are the ones most frequently studied here.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?

I would love to have that job! I am a pagan, so I am naturally fascinated by deities of all kinds! Mythology is also fascinating because it helps you look into what daily life may have been like in ancient times

I love mythology. Greek/Roman is one of my favorites, although as I learn more about the different ones from around the world Norse is now in my top 5.

The Native Americans have some interesting mythology, although in truth I haven't studied it as much as the European ones.

I love the idea of mythology and learning about it. But no I would never want that job. I made that mistake in college with poetry. I loved poetry, the way the words flow, the structure and the images a simple passage can create, but after taking a class on it I HATE poetry. Dissecting it, diving deeper than is needed, etc. I fear that would happen with a job in mythology as well. I would rather I keep enjoying it without the extra.

- Which mythology would you like to learn about?
All of them please! I would love to learn about more mythology. I have always loved stories about the Egyptian, Roman or Greek Gods. Movies, TV shows and Games that draw on these mythologies are often my favourite too!
Did anyone play Age of Mythology? Such a great game...

- What mythology is specific to your culture or country?
Well I am from Australia. Most of Australian mythology is from our indigenous people and it's absolutely amazing and really interesting. I hope I am not wrong, but this is my basic understanding. Essentially the world was created by spirits/ancestors in a time known as the "Dreamtime", as time only began when these ancestors emerged from the earth.

- If you could get a job studying all of the different mythologies of the world, would you want that job? Why or why not?
Oh yes please. What a great job - learning about interesting things all day!
