Welcome to Fan Fiction's Continue the Story!

This is a thread where you can earn prizes by participating in a group effort of continuing a story! After one person posts, you continue the story with how you think it should evolve from there!

Rules
1. All HEX rules apply. Please keep all content appropriate and within the bounds of the site's PG-13 rating.
2. All work must be your own. Plagiarism is taken very seriously; if a piece is found to be plagiarized, you will face time in Azkaban.
3. Your post must be between 100-300 words long.
4. Please do not create separate threads for 'planning' the story. We would like it to be pieced together as you go and encourage everyone to participate.
5. Please stay as close to the original storyline as possible; do not veer so off course that it would confuse others or completely change the original plot.
6. If you submit a post and five or more days pass without another user jumping in to continue the story, you may contact a Fan Fiction moderator to let them know. A moderator will then make a post in the thread so that you and other users can respond with additional posts.
7. All posts must be submitted to this thread by
March 31st at 11:59 PM HEX time to be eligible for tickets to the monthly raffle.
8. Questions, comments, or concerns about this should be addressed to the Fan Fiction Moderators: Jenni, Cody, Desi, Maria Ana, Clint, Rii, or Jiae.

Repeatedly breaking any of these rules is grounds for suspension from Continue the Story. This means you will not be allowed to participate in this contest.

Prizes
Each eligible post will earn you up to 4 tickets to the Fan Fiction Monthly Raffle, with a maximum limit of 20 tickets.

Each participant who submits a valid entry gets 1 ticket towards Author's Notes.

Task
With great effort, Padfoot got out of the water. He had no energy to stand, let alone transform back into his human form. Sirius had just escaped from Azkaban, and he was probably the first to have ever done so and remain alive. All he knew was that he was thoroughly motivated to protect Harry and punish Peter. Luckily, he had become so lean and weak that his presence had become almost negligible in the prison, making it easier to escape.

But now that he was out in the open, Sirius didn't know where to go. He had focused so intensely on escaping that he had forgotten to plan for what happened after he was free. Now, away from the influence of Dementors, his main focus was to stay alive and avoid getting caught again.

First thing, he thought to himself, was he needed something to eat. He was absolutely starving. He panted, his long tongue hanging out of his mouth. Where to get food though?

Sighing, Sirius decided he'd need to find a muggle village, where hopefully he could recooperate there. After building up his strength, he then started the long journey of trying to find civilization. His paws trekked onward as his nose led the way, his mind still focused on Harry as his stomach growled. He couldn't believe Pettigrew was alive! Why, when he found him maybe he'd make HIM his lunch!

He wandered along the pavements aimlessly for what seemed like decades. Then he froze. The heavenly aroma of barbecued meat wafted towards his nostrils, and drool trickled out the corner of his mouth.

Yes.

Sirius's nose twitched. A quick sniff told him exactly where it was. Unable to contain his excitement, he bounded along the trail, eyes shining with glee. Smoke curled in the distance, beckoning to him, though the source of it was obscured by a tall row of houses.

Panting slightly, Sirius's trot quickened to a sprint. He could wait no more.
I'm coming, food!

Little did he know, his recklessness would be his fatal mistake.

There it was, an old but modest small house with brown worn bricks, a black front door, and a chimney on top from where the sweet aroma he had smelled was wafting up. His mouth watered as his panting quickened, his tongue almost hitting the ground as his tail wagged furiously with excitement. He was almost afraid his stomach would give him away from the sound it was making.

His paws made it's way forward as Sirius sniffed the air eagerly, dreaming about the the delicious meat that would await him inside. He paused at the window, his eyes narrowing as he went into a predator mode. Then again, predator mode wasn't that different from Sirius' regular mode these days. He was always on his guard, and not a little bit more than crazy.

He heard hearty laughter from inside and the sound of utensils clacking against one another. Sirius whimpered softly. It seemed like they were just starting dinner. He'd have to wait until they were done. Not to mention hopefully they wouldn't eat all of the food. He'd have to be stealthy. He wanted that steak for Merlin's sake.

But how would he get in? The black dog knew he would give the Muggles a right scare if he just entered the house. A large, shaggy dog would be the last thing on their minds. He was about to turn and walk away when he was sure he heard the sound of children’s voices followed by running through the hallways. Surely no loving parent would deny their offspring time with a beloved stray.

With all his might, and the last of his remaining strength, Padfoot placed both paws on the door of the house and barked with everything he had. Having soon barked himself horse, the dog lay down on the ground, shut his eyes and hoped for the best.

Suddenly, a young girls voice excitedly chirped from within. "Mama! Mama! I think I heard a dog!"

Sirius' ears immediately perked up. He stood up straight, then frowned (well, made some sort of expression - can dog's even frown?). He was filthy. Would their parents even let him in the house? He quickly started to lick his fur, grooming himself as he raced against the clock until someone opened the door.

He just managed to sit straight and put on his biggest smile and puppy dog eyes just as the mother (he assumed) opened the door. She had beautiful long brown hair, blue eyes, and a warm smile. Standing next to her was a miniature version of the woman jumping up and down with joy, looking up at her as if asking for permission to pet the dog.

If Sirius could grin any wider, he would. Today dinner would be easy. But again, so he thought.

Lolling out his tongue, the dog pleaded with his eyes. All he wanted was food to help get his strength back. Smelling some delicious steaks, his nose twitched as he looked at the smaller female. Putting his head on one side, Padfoot walked towards the girl and saw her mother nod with a soft smile. A small hand reached out and scratched him behind the ears. As soon as the soft extremity came into contact with his fur, the dog’s tail wagged like mad.

“Come on in then,” the mother said quietly as she glanced around the deserted street. “David won’t be happy but it’s the least I can do for Emily,” she said as she rubbed her hand over her daughter’s hair.

Trotting excitedly alongside the dark haired girl, Padfoot barked his thanks at the kindly Muggle family for taking pity on a poor homeless hound.
‘My, you do have quite the appetite, don’t you boy!’ Mrs Yelland said as she put another bowl of food in front of the shaggy animal. ’You licked that clean! I wonder where your owners are?’
Hearing her mother’s question, Emily took her opportunity to plead her case for keeping the handsomely dark dog. ‘They can’t have been very good owners if he’s so hungry and neglected looking, can they mummy?’ Large blue eyes begged desperately to keep the dog.
‘Humph! We’ll see what your father says when he comes home this evening!’ Maria Yelland would’ve liked to keep the dog, but their finances were always precarious, and she took nothing for granted, softening her voice she said, ’I think a bath for this fella wouldn’t go amiss, he might look respectable again!’
Sirius stopped mid chew at the mention of a bath, but he figured it was a small price to pay for such a sumptuous repast and a bed for the night.

Even as a human, Sirius has always disliked baths. He much preferred showers. But, after more than a decade in Azkaban, the Animagus was actually quite looking forward to a good wash. Barking contently, the shaggy black dog wagged his tail and placed a paw on Emily’s shoulder, making the little girl giggle.

“Oh, Mummy!” Emily exclaimed, throwing her arms around the dog’s neck. “Isn’t he perfect?” She was completely in love with the animal and sincerely hoped her father would let them keep it. “What do you think his name is?” she asked curiously. “I like the name Dusk. What do you think, Mummy?”

’Dusk? Yes, I think it suits him perfectly, honey. Dusky Dog!’ Maria went to the bathroom and dog proofed it by placing old towels on the flooring and running fresh warm water.
Emily continued to play with the shaggy, good natured pet, and coaxed him towards the bathroom.
Sirius repaid the child by responding with rough and tumble play, jumping forwards with barks of delight and backing away with whines of protest as they approached the steaming room.
Padfoot hadn’t felt such a part of simple humanity since his incarceration in Azkaban. He felt his strength renew, his mind clear, and his soul revive. Bounding into the bathroom he looked forward to the cleansing waters as the final part of the ritual to make him whole again.

As the girl was washing him, Padfoot’s tail began to wag uncontrollably. He was extremely grateful that this family had taken a stray. They didn’t know who he was from Adam. If dogs could smile, he would currently be grinning from ear to ear. Beginning to feel much better, much more who, the dog happily licked the girl’s face.

While Padfoot was being dried, he heard the front door slam. A roar echoed down the hallway, shaking Sirius to the core and making him whimper. “Why can I smell wet dog!?” came the mysterious voice. There was no way the dog was going to greet him.

’Emily, make sure you dry Dusk completely, I won’t be a minute.’
Maria held her breath at the sound of her husband’s angry tone and the slam of the front door. She held her stomach and fixed a smile on her face, then went to greet him.
‘David, you’re home early, everything’s all right isn’t it?’
Taking no notice of his wife, David repeated his query.
’Why is there a stink of wet dog in my house?’
‘Honey, it-it’s just a poor hungry stray, I’ll take him to the dogs home tomorrow.’
Hoping her words would calm the angry man, Maria walked behind picking up his jacket and shirt as he discarded them on his way to the kitchen.
‘Suppose you fed him too?’
David took a long drink of cold beer.
‘Just scraps, Davy, only scraps, nothing more. Shall I get you something to eat?’
Maria tried to gauge her husband’s mood, she knew that if she said too much it could provoke him. She hoped she’d sounded happy, not nagging or fretful or anxious, but the silence was making her nervous.
‘Shall I make supper then, Davy?’

Emily hated it when her father shouted. He always sounded so mean when she knew that, deep down, he loved both her and her mother very much. As his voice continued to rise, the girl clung to Padfoot and shut the door, hoping to drown out some of the noise. She could hear her mother pleading with her father that to just let their daughter have this one night with the stray and then she would take him to the shelter.

Padfoot’s ears pricked up at that. There was no way that he, a fully-grown wizard, would be taken anywhere with this unknown person. So, looking at Emily, the shaggy black dog licked her face once, pushed the swinging door with his head and bounced out through the still open front door.

The dog whipped around so quickly, Emily was still giggling and wiping dog saliva from her cheek, Padfoot shot through the house and out into the darkening street. A streak of shaggy fur disappearing into the coming night.
’Dusk! Dusk, come back!’ The small child shouted, bereft that the lovable creature had fled.
‘Oh, I think he’ll be fine, honey, he’s had food and a bath.’ Maria comforted her daughter, ‘l think he has some way to go before he finds the right home, that’s all it is.’
‘He was happy here, until...’ Emily was prevented from saying more by her mother’s hand covering her mouth.
‘Hush, now, don’t be upset, Dusk is an intelligent dog, he survived this long on his wits, didn’t he?’
Emily allowed herself to be mollified by her mother, but her heart hardened infinitesimally against her father.
Now at the edge of the town, Padfoot slowed, ears erect for any sounds, nose sniffing out scents, all seemed clear, as he slowed his pace and looked for a place to bed down for the night.

Up ahead in the distance, Padfoot noticed a low grey barn. He sauntered over to it and carefully scouted out the area. He circled the building twice before he was convinced it was well and truly abandoned. Entering an unpatched hole in the side, Padfoot crept slowly into the building.

It was dim and dusty inside, and there was a faint smell of old animal. Surely this barn hadn't been used for ages. There were cobwebs hanging from the rafters and the hay that had been left behind on the ground were all musty and covered in mold. Padfoot sniffed out each of the stalls before finding one in the far back that took him by surprise.

In the corner of the stall, there was a balled up piece of what looked like old flannel. It seemed to be stuffed haphazardly with some of the nearby moldy hay as a make-shift pillow. Next to it there was a small piece of what looked like the remains of a candle and a thin brown blanket rolled up near the wall. Padfoot couldn't tell if the items looked abandoned, or just plain decrepit. Perhaps this barn wasn't as abandoned as he had initially thought.

Unable to stop from yawning, the tired hound circled the blanket and rested, closing dark eyes and keeping one ear alert for suspicious sounds, finally Padfoot slept with visions of Azkaban, Dementors, Peter, Lily and James troubling his mind.
Waking from his tortured dreams, the dog was aware that he was no longer alone in the barn, wary and scared that he might be cornered and captured, he sniffed the air for any familiar scents, and tried too make out if the other occupant was human or animal, friend or foe.
With every fibre of his body strained Sirius decided to make a dash for freedom, jumping up, he lunged for the door, only for his way to be blocked by a body lying, shivering on the cold barn floor, with tail wagging he sniffed the face and hair of the raggedly dressed man.
‘Surely, it’s not...?’
Rolling the human over with all his strength, Sirius was able to see the face of his friend, Moony.
With renewed vigour Padfoot changed into human form to drag Remus into the stall and wrap him in the blanket and get him warm.
‘The moon is on the wane, my old friend, you’ll be fine in a few hours.’
Returning to shaggy dog form, he slept close to Remus keeping him warm.

Moony suddenly aware that he was in a place he knew not ..it was dark which he appreciated. He had that won out feeling he had become so familiar with over the years. Each time he started to come back to the other side of his moon phase torment he wondered how he had missed taking the wolfsbane potion. The hairs on the back of his neck began to tingle as he became very aware that he was not alone, wherever he was. Starting to gather his thoughts and prepare to defend himself he heard the voice of his dear friend. "Sirius, How...? When...? What the... ?" Remus Staggered to his feet and opened his arms to his friend ..there would be time for the questions in a bit he hoped...

"I managed to escape from that infernal place," explained Sirius. "I had gotten so thin and wasted that the dementors often passed me by like a useless scrap of food that could not possibly provide them with much nourishment. Man, I hate dementors...." Sirius paused as memories of the loathsome creatures filled his mind, then he shook his head as if to rid himself of those unwelcome thoughts. "I see that you are still making good use of this shack, Remus. Ah, yes of course, we have just passed the full moon. I was cursing the moon for shining so brightly the other night, as if she wanted to pinpoint me in a spotlight to reveal my presence. Well, we are both happy that the full moon is waning now. Right, Moony?"
