He knew he had made a mistake the second the Ferris wheel ground to a halt.

Over his head, the murky clouds lazily crawled their way across the darkening sky, suffocating the moon as it tried to wrestle free from their grasp. The stench of distant smoke burned his throat like a feeding flame, forcing him to cough and splutter on the acrid taste that had settled in his lungs. Silhouetted against the now dreary sky, the tents held their ground; they were guards, slyly encircling the park’s visitors and winning them over with their frightening wonders.

His fingers clenched the chipped metal pole in front of him, wincing as the rust dug into his palm. Why? Why had they come here?

As the first anguished screams battered his ears, he knew for sure he had been wrong. He had no choice but to fight.

Without giving himself a chance to hesitate, he plummeted from the wheel, with the cries of the wind at his back and the voice in his head whispering, “This is the one place I should have been safe.”

James ran away from the group, they didn’t pay attention to him anyways. He wanted to see it one more time, one more glance at the fair where it all happened. Before it would be broken down, it was so old they decided to take it apart and built something else there. Probably an apartment complex, or a shopping mall. Those always get built. But the city council never decides to keep the important stuff. Who cares that business was slowing down for the fair? Who cares that after the accident less and less people would even dare to visit the fair.
James thought it was cruel, he grew up there. And that’s why he wanted to see it one more time, before they started tearing it apart tomorrow. Just one more glimpse at how it looks like in the evening, without all the lights, after the customers left and its closed down.
The group wouldn’t understand, they would nag and drag him away to some other place they wanted to hang out, not look out over an abandoned fair. James sprinted towards the little wall close by. Standing on top of it, he could see the fair pretty good.
But what stood out most was the Ferris Wheel. He always loved it, and tonight it looked great. The setting sun in the distance gave a nice glow over the Wheel, and James smiled. It might get broken down tomorrow, but it would always have a place in James’ heart.

Harry froze in the entrance, prompting the person behind him to run into him. The other man apologized quickly, but Harry shook his head. "Sorry. My fault," he told the man, stepping aside. He felt his wife's eyes on him and knew she understood. The last time they'd gone to an event like this...

But he had to get over it. Teddy had wanted to come here, and he'd agreed to take him. It wasn't like this was a wizarding event, after all. What was the likelihood he'd even be recognized here?

"Why'd we stop, Uncle Harry?" Teddy asked, grabbing onto Harry's hand.

Harry forced himself to relax, looking down into his godson's currently brown eyes. "Just wanted to talk to you before we go in," he said, kneeling so that he was eye-level with Teddy. "Stay close to me, alright? And make sure that..."

"Make sure I keep my hat on, so the muggles don't see my hair change. I know! Gran told me all of that too. Can we PLEASE go in now?!" Teddy gave him a huge grin.

Harry heard Ginny chuckle and he joined in. "I suppose we can," he said, standing once more. "Come on, Teddy. Let's get you on the Ferris Wheel first. Ginny, are you coming on with us?"

"Definitely. I miss being in the sky." Ginny laid a hand on her swollen stomach. "Though it won't be long till I can get back on a broom. Once this one finally makes an appearance."

Harry smiled, placing his hand over hers for a moment. “Come on, Gin. Let’s see if the sky feels the same without a broom.”

Teddy grabbed both of their hands and led them to the line, and Harry and Ginny shared a smile. All really was well.

After a hard abusive day with the Dursley, Harry took a long walk away from 4 Privet Drive. He didn’t know where he was going but as long as it was far from them. Before he knew it, Harry was standing in front of a Ferris Wheel. The long walk had taken him to a closed carnival. He looked up at the Ferris Wheel and sighed. “I wish I had money to ride one.” It was a massive attraction and thought of the fun many people had riding it. “Life isn’t fair.” Harry kicked a pebble across the ground. “I’ll be back one day!”

The late evening sky was turning to darkness as the solitary boy walked among the disused fair. The Ferris Wheel creaked and groaned in protest at its enforced inactivity. The giant tents shuddered and flapped as the near night time winds picked up and danced around the deserted interiors. The metal floodlights screeched out to be allowed to live again and to illuminate the darkness that encroached upon the amusement park once more. The lonely boy approached the big wheel and sat on the cold metal seat, pushing himself to and fro with his feet. Creasing his forehead in concentration, the dark haired teen imagined the carnival with lights blazing, barrel music blaring, voices competing to get your attention, animals roaring and the sound of fun, laughter and enjoyment everywhere. As soon as the thoughts entered his mind, the Fair burst into life. Not for the first time the dark eyed boy had been able to conjure up thoughts and make them reality, and the feeling of omniscient power raged through him.

Entry 1:

The sky was the strangest color that evening: a dusky sort of yellow. A hush settled over the fairgrounds as the color permeated everything. Even the birds in the sky and the animals in their pens were quiet. Every living being knew something momentous was coming. Then it happened. There was an immense flash of gold and then smoke as far as the eye could see. The sound of thunder amplified a thousand times rang through the atmosphere. Someone screamed. Suddenly a wave of heat hit, splaying all with particles of dust, dirt, and metal. The war had started. The end had come.

[WC – 103]

Entry 2:

As the daylight faded from the sky, Krissy realized just how tired she was. She had played every game at the carnival. She had eaten some magnificent foods including the best fried dough she had ever had. The onion rings had been to die for too. In fact her stomach was so full, her waistband felt a little tight.

But the highlight of the day had been the rides, the Ferris wheel in particular. Krissy loved rides: the carousel the swings, the tea cups. They were all so much fun. But she had been on the Tallest, longest ride with Ross. At the very top of their fourth revolution, the wheel had stopped. He had turned and looked deep into her eyes. Then he kissed her. It was the most magical moment of her life. She would remember this day for as long as she lived and more. Forever.

[WC – 149]

Entry 3:

The waiting was the hardest part. It always was. No matter how many times this scenario played over and over, it was these last few seconds of apprehension, suspense and dread that were the worst. Dread in the best sense of the word of course. Damon actually relished this moment. The anticipation was like a beautiful hors d’oeuvre before a meal. It was delicious, but it made you want the main course even more. And he did. The silence spread out over the stunned people. Then it happened. An unintelligible shout rang out. An image filled the sky, one that had not been seen since the nineties. The Dark Mark reared its ugly head and sparkled in the sky. History was repeating itself. He had brought back his master again.

Bubbling could be heard -- and then "DAMMIT" followed by a BIG explosion.

"Experiment 7,922 failed?"
"If YOU were a better TEACHER I'd have finished by now."
Severus crossed his arms and smiled. Hermione's stubbornness still amazed him.
"It is impossible to combine Fire-Fighting, Lung-Clearing, Muffling and Silencing potions. There are charms --"
"None protect the potion AND potioneer. My apprenticeship agreement ends tonight; I need to finish while you're obligated to assist."
Her hair sparkled -- tiny flames ignited and extinguished themselves spontaneously. Muggle ventilators whirred, removing burnt hair smells before they spread.
"Come, Apprentice. You've neglected your duties."
The lab returned to order under her wand.
"We BOTH prefer your cooking."
"Come, Apprentice."
"I'm not a pet to be ordered about, Severus."
"No, you're an indentured servant. Don't make me repeat myself, Hermione."
"Let me change --."
He stepped forward, taking her hands, and twisted in Apparition to her scream of "SEVERUS!" --
-- and landed in a VIP gondola on the Seattle Great Wheel, the city's skyline alight. In the distance, the yurt community of the Quinnault (where her parents now practiced) glimmered as the wheel rotated. She hadn't visited in forever.
"The Crab Pot for dinner!?" she squealed.
"Yes. As your apprenticeship ended hours ago -- GMT, I thought it appropriate to mark its completion," and he Accio'd a small box from his vest (his clothing now transfigured into casual wear).
Hermione's large eyes stared. Inside sat a ruby, as red as blood, surrounded by a shock of diamonds in a silver setting.

"I-I-I..."
"While I will miss intimidating you. I do hope you'll become my potions partner... and my wife..."
Their gondola ground to a halt. It took one look inside for the operator to close their door, informing the waiting passengers -- "This one's out of service. Next up!"

Harry left the sleeping quietness of the Burrow, the frightening events of less than a day ago still imprinted onto his mind. He touched his scar, residual pain still tingling, and the recent disruption at the campsite denying him any rest, he had to investigate further. Following the happy and adventurous route he had travelled with the Weasley family just a short time before, shining his brightly lit wand over the night frost covered moor, Harry searched for the Portkey, kicking the ground in frustration.
‘Is this what you’re looking for?’ The familiar superior voice of Hermione surprised him out of his annoyance, as she dangled the old boot by it’s laces. Without waiting for a reply, she continued. ‘You can’t use it again it was time sensitive, Harry!’
‘Besides you weren’t really going to go without us were you? The yawning tones of a sleep deprived Ron broke through.
‘So how do we -?’
Hermione enchanted the footwear, and they were transported to the eerie, yet familiar campsite, where they had encountered the ominous Dark Mark, all was quiet and dark, with noises of metal contracting and tent’s gently flapping.
‘What are we looking for?’ Ron asked.
‘Dunno, but my head is hurting, there’s something wrong here, something we-I missed in the confusion of the Death Eaters raid.’
‘Like that!’ A clearly petrified Hermione cried.
The pale, skeletal form of “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" rose to meet his nemesis. ‘I knew you couldn’t resist my call, we are more alike than you think, Harry.’ His voice a hoarse, grating rasp. ‘I grow stronger and will soon vanquish those who will not serve me!’

This was the moment when the fair could be seen without all the lights and the music. Dark enough where she could gaze at the scene remembering fairs gone by. The nostalgia that came with the memories lies at the forefront of her mind. This circuit over and in those few moments between the end and the teardown. The silhouette of the old country fair was still visible as the sun dropped lower and lower into the horizon. She knew when morning came and the sun rose higher what would be left would be nothing of what she saw now. She turned on her heel and walked away.

"Oh my GOD, why is the sky yellow?!" Harry screamed in fear as he approached the carnival.

"WE ARE LIVING IN A SEPIA WORLD," Ron yelled, clutching onto Hermione tightly, "Oh god, how did this happen, all we wanted was to go on the ferris wheel."

"Did you know that the sky is normally blue? Or rather, it has the appearance of blue," Hermione stated matter-of-factly, "Sometimes it is pink, red, yellow, or orange. Even purple, at times. That is generally at sunrise or sundown. This yellow-beige, vomit colour though, I'm not sure. It's quite odd."

"HOW ARE YOU NOT FREAKING OUT?" Ron bellowed at Hermione, "LOOK AT THE COLOURS, IT LOOKS LIKE VOMIT."

"It is quite peculiar," Hermione said, "But I'm sure it's fine. Let's ride on the ferris wheel!"

"Okay fine," said Harry.

"Sounds good," said Ron.

The three of them then went on the ferris wheel and had a grand dandy ol' time.

Desmond had no idea how he got here, but didn't mind. First he was inside the forest, the next he goes through a funny looking window and he was in an abadonned fairground.
Then there was a noice and he turned around, just in time to notice a man with an animal next to him. A cheetah and he was surprised it didn't run of or attack anyone. ''What are you doing here?'' he heard a woman's voice say. Desmond didn't respond and looked around, he was only able to see this man before him, yet a girl had spoken. When he looked again, he heard the voice again and the man wasn't moving his mouth. ''Cat's got your tongue? What are you doing here?'' said the woman louser now. Desmond jumped and looked down. Was the cheetah talking? That's nonsense! ''Answer to Minerva if you want to live'' said the man.
''I... I got lost... Just passing through, I'm on my way to Boston'' Desmond said.
''There, there, that wasn't too difficult was it?'' Minerva said. The cat did talk! Desmond was confused, but he definiately heard a woman talking, but also saw the mouth of the cheetah move. Was this hidden camera? ''How come your cheetah can talk?'' he asked the man.
''Now that's a stupid question, I'm his Daemon and we all talk. Speaking of daemons, where's yours?'' the cheetah said.
''Now don't be too pushy Minerva... the boy is obviously not from around here. Let's bring him back to his own dimension.''

Shelly stared at the wheel in front of her. She had heard it described before, but had never seen one. With the back ground of the sky, the Ferris Wheel looked like an empty shell. Something tormented and abandoned from years gone by. She cocked her head to the side, trying to imagine what the wheel must look like when it was moving and full of people. It did not look interesting to her. She would rather have a fast ride that left her breathless. That being said, she admitted to herself that the view from the top must be beautiful. She wondered if it would be worth it to pay admission to the fair to ride the wheel. She shook her head. Money was to hard to come by. She would not waste it on something like that. Shelly turned and walked away from the fair grounds.

Lynn Michaels smiled at Susie, her seven-year old daughter, as they sat in one of the carriages at the top of the ferris wheel. Going to the county fair every fall had been a tradition since Susie was two years old. During the first couple of years, the baby didn’t understand the surroundings, but she smiled when she saw the lights and cried when she heard loud noises. When Susie turned five, she wanted to go on the rides. Lynn wanted to protect her daughter, so they went on rides that stayed close to the ground and didn’t go too fast. The merry-go-round was their favorite. Mother and daughter would pick out the most beautiful horses to ride, and they spurred them on to jump higher and run faster.

This year Susie begged to go on the giant wheel. Lynn was secretly glad that Susie had not insisted on going on the roller coaster; Lynn had still not got over a terrifying ride herself. So after they finished their bubblegum-pink cotton candy, they boarded the ride, holding hands and giggling. Susie oohed as they rose higher and higher, laughing even more when they began their descent to the bottom, only to rise again. As Lynn watched her daughter experience such joy, her heart was filled with love. So much so that she barely thought of the father who was not by their side.

Entry #1:

A creak dragged him back to reality. The boy did not wake to soft sheets, not the plush armchair, and that left him momentarily confused. But then his eyes adjusted to his dim-lit surroundings, and a chill ran down his spine.

Angry wisps of clouds swirled above him, and beyond them was a bile-colored carpet that draped across the sky. Questions bombarded him as he shook out of his daze. He had to get out of this place, whatever this was. With a yawn, the boy got to his feet before taking a step. And almost plunging to his death.

His heart pounded in his ears. The wind howled and stung his cheeks. And the putrid stench of rust wafted up to his nostrils. Disbelievingly, he looked down. And what he saw burned in his mind with such cauterising permanence, it would haunt him forever.

Entry #2

The wind caressed her cheek, as gentle as her mother once did. Below here, the trees swayed, their branches bare and crooked at odd angles, gazing mournfully at her. The tattered remnants of what once was a colorful poster stared at her, devoid of emotion.

Tears threatened to spill, but she forced them back, titling her head up to the skies.

And the dull yellow of the sky that stretched above her brought forth a wave of sorrow too. It was the exact same color as Matilda’s eyes. But she would never be able to see them again.

A rueful creak sounded from the rusty joints of the ferris wheel, the noises Jon used to make in his little shed. Crows circled overhead, their caws strained.

The sounds merged together into a grief-stricken song, and she joined in, her voice clear and pure as day but melancholic, pouring her heart out.

A passing breeze rocked the seats of the Ferris Wheel, causing them to creak and sway ominously. Eden gripped the sides of her seat, knuckles white against the metal bar. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She really didn't want to vomit all over her date.
Mason, sat next to her on the seat, had thought this would be a great first date. Riding a Ferris Wheel at sunset was an absolute romantic classic; how was he to know that Eden was petrified of heights.
He reached an arm around Eden's shoulder and squeezed. She turned towards him, burying her face into his shoulder. As he pulled her in closer, Mason thought that maybe this wasn't such a bad date after all.

Entry 2
There was something wrong. Normally she was woken in the night by the barking of the dogs.
There was something wrong. Normally she was woken several hours before dawn by the roustabouts clanging on the metal poles.
There was definitely something wrong. The circus was silent. Not a sound was heard anywhere.
The silence was really starting to bother Aella, so she slipped out of bed. The other beds in her tent were empty. She assumed that the girls were already in the cook tent so she dressed quickly to join them. For the first time ever she crossed the camp without seeing a single person.
Slowly she came to the realisation that there was no one else here. The circus had been abandoned and Aella was the last one left.

Entry 3
"Go on" Damon urged "I dare you"
Miles swallowed. He wasn't one to back out on a dare, but breaking into the funfair didn't seem like the right thing to do.
Damon pulled at the chain gates, there was a gap just big enough for them to squeeze through. Miles hesitated, but something in Damon's face said that backing out now wouldn't be an option. He slipped between the gates, Damon following rapidly on his heels.
Once inside Damon ran straight to the Ferris Wheel and started to climb. With a grimace, Miles followed. Up and up they climbed until at last they stood in the gathering dusk on the top of the wheel.
Miles felt like they were standing on top of the world.

They were approaching the fair ground, he could see the Ferris wheel already in the distance. Where they really going to do this. Where they really going to sneak in there at night and go on the rides? Pete was asking himself. He would get into so much trouble if his dad would find out, the others didn't understand how much trouble.
They reached the gate now, Trystan threw a blanket over the top of the gate and then they helped each other to the other side.
Mary looked at him 'are you scared Pete' she said be fore running after the others.
There was no way back now, he was going to do this.
