Welcome to Fan Fiction's Continue the Story!

This is a thread where you can earn prizes by participating in a group effort of continuing a story! After one person posts, you continue the story with how you think it should evolve from there!

Rules
1. All HEX rules apply. Please keep all content appropriate and within the bounds of the site's PG-13 rating.

3. Your post must be between 100-300 words long.
4. Please do not create separate threads for 'planning' the story. We would like it to be pieced together as you go and encourage everyone to participate.
5. Please stay as close to the original storyline as possible; do not veer so off course that it would confuse others or completely change the original plot.
6. Questions, comments, or concerns about this should be addressed to the Fan Fiction Moderators: Jenni, Cody, Desi, Maria Ana, Clint, Rii, or Jiae.

Repeatedly breaking any of these rules is grounds for suspension from Continue the Story. This means you will not be allowed to participate in this contest.

Each participant who submits a valid entry gets 1 ticket towards Author's Notes.

Task
It had been three days since he had been marked, but it was still fresh in Draco's mind. The Dark Lord had not only taken over their house, but had also integrated Draco into his ranks. And even though Draco indicated that he was really proud, he - like his mother - knew that the Dark Lord was angry for what his father had done.

The scar was still raw. Draco hadn't dared to look at the Dark Mark on his forearm properly; it burned endlessly, always reminding him of its presence. He wished it would guide him. His aunt Bellatrix seemed particularly pleased that Draco was officially a Death Eater now. Draco, however, shared his mother's sentiments: for the first time in his life, he was scared.

Draco stood in the anteroom of his bed room staring into the large gilded framed mirror he noted the almost deathly white pallor of his face as if all the blood had drained and had gathered in his still stinging, throbbing arm, Why did they have to do it the way muggles tattoo themselves, they were wizards not common mudbloods they should come up with a better way to do such things. Then Voldemort's word whispered in his ears filled his mind and the room about him disappeared and the fear took hold as he head the hissing voice "You do not welcome the pain do you should you ever fail me it will be as a million times worse"
Slowly the room came back into focus he found himself in a chair shaking violently what had he done how had all this happened where was his perfect safe life gone?

Draco tried not to be scared, he really did. He was Draco Malfoy, and Malfoy’s aren’t scared of anything. They are brave. But, he just couldn’t shake off the feeling of the needle, the horrid scent of the dark lord’s breath, the sound of his wheezing voice. After it was all over, he figured he would be able to go lay down and do just what he’s doing now, forget, but of course there was more.
Draco shook his head to clear his thoughts. He wasn’t sure why, now of all times, he was having these flashbacks. The dark mark should be something he is proud of. He should wave it in front of that filthy mudblood, the weasel, and that Potter when he gets back to school. That way they get to know what is in store for them. He wanted so badly to do that, to make someone else have as much fear as he had at this very moment. He wanted to, but he knew he couldn’t. He had a mission, and he had to do this mission to perfection, or else not only would he face the consequences. The Dark Lord had taken Draco to the side after the initial tattooing and the curse that was planted upon his arm.
“You know what you have to do?”
“Of course, sir.”
“Should you not do this, you know what will happen?”
“Yes, sir. You’ll kill me. I promise you, I will kill Dumbledore,”
“Aha, not just you, boy. Your mother, too, will die. And it will all be because of you. That’s not what you want, is it?”
“No, sir.” Draco said, the fear setting into overdrive.
“I’m glad we are at an understanding,” The Dark Lord hissed, his lips turning up into the slightest of smiles.

Draco clenched his hands into tight fists, fighting to control the twitching movement and his shuddering breath as he recalled the conversation.

Breathe slowly, Draco, breathe slowly... Aunt Bella's voice came unbidden into his mind, although it wasn't the harsh intrusion of Legilimency that the Dark Lord had used. The memory of Aunt Bella's whispering was sickly sweet and cloying, somehow worse for being gentle than if she had screamed at him. He was making good progress in Occlumency, apparently.

He pulled back into his mind and placed his sole focus on breathing deeply, slowly, on feeling only the physical sensation of his surroundings and body, then letting that bleed away until he was nothing but the rhythm of his own breathing and he could look at his thoughts for what they were: a product of his foolish fear. It was quite natural that he should be afraid; the Dark Lord had never pretended to be a kind master, and this was what Draco had signed up for. He never expected his mission to be easy, so why was he so afraid before he had even begun?

Finally feeling that his fear and traitorous thoughts were buried deep enough, he glanced up at his desk and let out an abrupt bark of laughter. Transfiguration homework sat on the table. Homework. After everything this summer had contained already? Occlumency training, dark rituals, duelling training and of course you can't forget Transfiguration homework.

Occlumency be damned, Draco felt icy terror grip his heart again. How was he going to make it through this year?

The icy terror gripped his heart as though a Dementor was creeping through his chest. So, this is how Potter feels, he found himself thinking. “Ugh! What have I become? I’m feeling sorry for Potter!” he spat, disgusted with himself. The Gryffindor was nothing, but trouble and he knew he had to be careful to avoid the suspicious brat. It was bad enough that the bespectacled young man was always on his case, even when he was innocent.

His mind turned to what his mother had said just ten minutes ago. ”I’ll fix this, son. Don’t you worry.” How was she going to fix this? Who could possibly fix this? His father was to blame for all of this mess. If only he had dealt with Potter at the Ministry everything would be well and he might not even have to complete this mission. Yes; this was all his father’s fault. What adult Death Eater could be outwitted by a fifth year?

Calm, Draco. All you have to do is kill the Headmaster… It was as though his thoughts were teasing him.

Draco tried not to think about it anymore for the moment, but he never got any better at not thinking about it. He'd hoped stuff like this would get easier as time went on, but he found the opposite to be true; every time he remembered the Dark Lord's order, his blood ran colder than it did the time before.

He had no plan, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to convince himself that he'd come up with something. Hadn't countless witches and wizards before him tried to complete the task that he'd been burdened with? And hadn't they all, one by one, failed? Perhaps that was the whole point... Perhaps he wasn't meant to succeed.

Rolling his eyes, Draco turned his attention to his desk. It sat in the corner of his room, brown and fairly boring looking. On top of it was his Transfiguration homework. Although he could never understand why he had homework during the break, he was grateful for the distraction. “I suppose I could at least make a start,” the platinum-blond muttered as he stood and made his way over to the desk.

His father had scolded him more than once for lagging behind Hermione Granger in his schoolwork, but he was determined to stay ahead this year. He couldn’t afford to be stuck in detention or anything when he needed to use all his precious spare time to search for an answer. Draco was even too scared to ask his mother or aunt for suggestions; he didn’t want the Dark Lord finding out. He hoped Narcissa would be able to think of a solution.

Shrugging, he pulled his book towards him and set to work.

He stared down at the pages -- densely filled with information -- and even managed to read through some of the sentences, but after starting on the second paragraph he had to admit to himself he wasn't taking any of it in. Staying ahead during the school year to come was going to prove challenging if he didn't find a way to focus his mind. But it seemed so... pointless. Most things did nowadays. Simple things, like having breakfast, changing into presentable clothes, straightening out his hair... it all seemed so utterly menial. It felt like a huge shadow had been cast over everything he'd once known. Perhaps that's why he was finding it so hard to be here, in his childhood bedroom, in the home he'd grown up in. It no longer felt anything like it used to. Not that it had ever been particularly warm and welcoming, but still... it had been home. Now it was almost unrecognisable.

Finally giving up on his homework, Draco pulled out his chair and strolled out of his room as casually as he could. “All I need is a bit of fresh air,” he muttered to himself. As he opened the door, his mother came waltzing through it. “I’m just going for a walk, Mother,” he announced to Narcissa, not giving her a chance to even speak to him. Just got to get away from it all! One thing was for sure; he certainly couldn’t concentrate on any schoolwork.

Wandering around the manor grounds, with the proud peacocks prancing about minding their own business, the young man thought he spotted movement in the distance. Edging towards it, he found his Aunt Bellatrix bent over some shrubs.

“Aunt Bella?” he asked cautiously. “Why are you here?”

He'd come out here for some fresh air, alone, but apparently the universe couldn't even grant him that much anymore. Not that the sight of his aunt didn't quickly wash away those thoughts of annoyance and replace them with something else entirely; more fear. It happened so easily lately. Or perhaps it always had, but he'd just chosen to ignore that little part of himself until now.

His aunt rose to her full height, then turned -- a little too slowly, like she'd already expected him here -- to face Draco. Her eyes finally came to look at his and Draco felt a chill run down his spine. She smirked, almost like she could tell.

"You know, its up to you to restore the Familys name, after what your father did" Bellatrix said baby talking to him "You think your man enough"
Something inside of Draco snapped and he turned on her, fist clenched and teeth barred, as he hissed back angrily "You've got room to talk AUNTIE" he spit the last, as if it was a foul taste in his mouth"This is your second go, isn't it? You and your husband, you made a right muck of it, and landed yourselves in Azkaban, over what, the Longbottoms they couldn't have been all that smart, as there son is almost a squib. If you'd done your job right, the first go, none of this would be necessary, we wouldn't all be in this situation would we?"
He turned on his heel half expecting a curse to hit him in the back, instead he almost ran directly into the Dark Lord who was stand a foot behind where he had just been Draco stepped back without thinking and felt his Aunts warm breath in his ear and the point of her at at his temple as she circled around him her face red with rage.
"No Bellatrix the Draco is right , you did fail me last time we all failed but you will not do so again, will you? Voldemort hissed softly"Come Draco I believe your Aunt needs sometime to think om your words leave her"
Draco felt sick seeing Bellatrix prostrate on the ground, begging for forgiveness...........

Draco had no choice but to accompany Voldemort. He didn’t know what would happen, so he just stayed quiet. Suddenly, without warning, the Dark Lord turned and sliced through the air with his wand. Bellatrix started to writhe around on the ground like a worm trying to escape the clutches of a bird. The young man felt the cold, pale fingers inch onto his shoulders and resisted the urge to shrug them off; if this was what happened to the loyal followers, he couldn’t bear to think what would happen to him.

After a while of just watching his aunt shriek and writhe around in pain, Voldemort turned to face Draco. “This, and a whole lot more, will happen if you fail me,” the Dark Lord hissed, his red slits glinting venomously. “Not just to you, but to your entire family. Do you hear me?”

Draco nodded without hesitation. “Yes, My Lord. I will not fail you, My Lord,” he said confidently, closing his mind so Voldemort wouldn’t see how utterly petrified he was.

How many more times was he going to have to do this? It seemed an endless cycle of trying to convince everyone -- including himself -- that he would do this, only to fall back into self hatred and doubt. If he went on like this much longer he was going to be sick.

He was no longer watching the shape of his aunt on the ground, squirming on the ground like a wounded animal. And he tried his hardest not to listen to the sounds, while the torment continued. The Dark Lord had no real reason to torture his aunt like this, Draco knew that, so he was quite certain all of this was nothing but a show to threaten him. Perhaps the Dark Lord sensed his insecurities, even now he had shut his mind off.

From one moment to the next, the curse broke, and his aunt came to lie still on the ground, panting in the aftermath, and looking more dishevelled than usual.

As soon as the Dark Lord removed his hand, Draco bowed and headed for his bedroom, keeping his mind shuttered, he didn't need to be in the same room or even in the same area, for Voldemort to reach his thoughts. He went straight to his bed room, drug his school trunk out and started packing it he would be leaving the next day for Hogwarts. Normally he let the servants do this stuff for him, this time he need the distraction,of doing something simple and to his way of thinking mindless, He knew he would be unable to sneak in anything into the school, Snape had warned them everyone was to be searched, their luggage would be as well so he had little chance of getting anything into the school to help him.
"Draco come along we need to get to Diagon Alley and get your new school things" His mothers voice came from the head of the ornately carved staircase
"Yes mother I will meet you down stairs in a minute" slamming the lid on the still empty trunk. He headed for the stairs at a run anything was better then being trapped in here being reminded at every turn that his life and the lives of his parents were holding on by a very find thread

Although the run was decidedly short, the energy that had cascaded through his body as his feet slammed into the hardwood floor was exhilarating. He needed to find somewhere he could do that in private. To release all the pent up energy that now threatened to burst forth in accidental magic, which would be even more of an affront to his wizardry than even Muggle running.

As he descended the grand staircase, he let his features soften. His mother hadn't been perfect, but she was always there when it counted. She looked at him in the slightly sad way she did when she thought he had to grow up too quickly, and said "How was your walk, darling?"

Draco tried not to stiffen as he replied, "It was very refreshing, thank you. The snapdragon are blooming well this year, and I think I will be sad to miss the hellebore's bloom."

"Yes, I think so too. The elves have done a fine job with them and the begonia, but I must say I am proud of the charms I placed on the pink and white carnation."

A lump appeared in Draco's throat as he digested this. "Of course, mother. I shall have to see those before I leave for school."

In truth, he hadn't paid any attention to the flowers in the garden. He had been far too distracted; but the language of flowers came as easily to a Malfoy as French or English, and his mother knew what he had really been saying.

"Let's go, Draco." Narcissa gestured to the Floo, and Draco felt eleven years old again as they stepped through the fire into Diagon Alley.

As the world around him materialised into something quite different to the grand and luxurious quarters of the Malfoy manor, Draco felt a sense of relief. Over the past few weeks of his life nothing, absolutely nothing had felt remotely normal. For the first time since the start of the summer holidays, Draco felt like something made sense again. He was here to get his books and school supplies for the school year ahead, like he did every year. He felt himself calm down, even if just a little. There was the scent of something sweet in the air and Draco thought of popping into Sugarplum's. That reminded him... he hadn't eaten a proper meal in days. His appetite had all but disappeared.

The moment that that thought occurred to him, his stomach gave a low growl. He would never normally consider eating in somewhere as plebian as the Leaky Cauldron, but... no!

Draco's face twisted into a sneer. What had happened to him, that for even a single second he was thinking about actually stopping in the Leaky Cauldron? It was bad enough that they had to use the Floo connection.

Despite the rumbling in his gut and how weak he suddenly felt, getting out of the Manor allowed Draco to feel more confident than he had felt since the beginning of summer. He strode into the cobbled street of Diagon Alley proper, and turned to Narcissa. "Mother, you go on ahead to Obscurus. I want to go to Sugarplum's."

They truly did need to buy some more of his school supplies, but most of the items they planned to buy today were for his... extracurricular activities. The professors should be proud of him, really. Repairing a Vanishing Cabinet would take a lot of advanced magic.

Draco watched his mother pretend that she wasn't checking on him as she walked towards the bookstore, then once she was safely out of view he ducked into Knockturn Alley. Utterly predictable, he knew, but she shouldn't have agreed to go on ahead if she didn't want him looking at the artifacts in Cobb & Webb's.

Walking down the alley was nerve-racking. Try as he might, Draco had never quite gotten used to the uncomfortable feeling that he was being watched any time he entered Knockturn. He nervously checked over his shoulder to make sure his mother was fully out of sight before straightening up and trying to project an air of casual confidence. What with his current and constant state of terror, that was easier said than done.
Voldemort had tasked him with finding a way to get Death Eaters into the school, and so here he was now at the door to Borgin and Burke's. He'd learnt from Montague that there was a broken vanishing cabinet in the school that had a pair in the shop, which might just provide an easy way to provide access to Hogwarts if only he could repair it. Draco took one last breath to steady himself before entering the dusty, old store.

Entering the shop, Draco walked past the display of Dark artefacts and unusual wizarding objects. He remembered exactly where the Vanishing Cabinet stood in the store and he wanted to have a good look at it this time. He had never paid it much attention before. He had always been more attracted to items that had some animated movement to them, or a deeper air or mystery.

For several moments, Draco stared in awe at the tall Vanishing Cabinet. Opening one of the wooden doors, he peered inside. It was spacious enough to hold four adults, or twice that amount of children. He was just about to step inside when he heard a voice which he recognised as belonging to the shop's owner.

"Master Draco Malfoy, how may I assist you today?" drawled Mr Borgin.
