There are many unexplained mysteries within the world, each with their own peculiar brand of mystic. Ranging from the paranormal to murder, from disappearances of entire crews or villages to lost civilizations - even life and death serve as their own mysteries. We're always looking for the answers to things that we might not want to know once they are learned. This yearning for answers can even be glimpsed in the Harry Potter series because of one Ministry department - The Department of Mysteries.

Looking closer, there is one room within the DoM that is a driving force of the series. It can also be argued that it is a driving force in our own lives. What is it? Why, prophecies, of course! Who doesn't wish that they were able to see what the future will bring? There are several people throughout history who have made "prophecies" and foretold events. Michel de Nostredame (more commonly known as Nostradamus) was one reputed seer who had published his prophecies. Every religion also features prophets predicting the future from Christianity to Judiasm to Buddhism. You may scoff and say that you don't believe, that prophecy isn't apart of everyday life now in modern times. However, I have a question for you: Do you read your horoscope? If you do, then you are still reading something that predicts what could happen. The Zodiac, for example, is used to predict how your year will be based on how the stars, planets, and celestial bodies align. Huff and call it phony, I bet you still read yours out of a curiosity to see what it says.

Discussion

Why don't we dive deeper into prophecies? After all, whether you believe in them or not ... they do seem to have some mysterious grasp on us, don't they?

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?

Honestly, people hate the unknown. If they can apply some sort of order or sense of sureness to that which really can't be known, it makes them feel better. Things following the laws of science, cause and effect, are great, but they give no care to emotion. Predicting good times, or anticipating the bad, those strike at the heart and that's what people cling to.

I think we would all like to think that we are not blundering blindly about. That we have a destiny in store for us.

Quote:
Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?

I do. I think we did have a gift, but it is really a matter of interpretation too. There have been different ones over time, to fit the issues at hand.

Quote:

I take it with a grain of salt. However something's have come true for me and the qualities associated with my sign(s) are pretty good.

If it is meant to be it will happen. Nothing I could do would influence it if it is a true prophecy.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
The one thing in life we never really know the answer to is What Does the Future Hold?Humans do not like leaving their fate to the unknown, we dislike having no control. We can place our selves on paths but those paths have twists turns and crossroads, for most it is like knowing your destination then being blindfolded with no map or compass and sent out to make the trip, Prophecies give us a glimpse of that future so we can decide if we should stay on our chosen path or abandon it for another or where to turn to avoid something
🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
Many of his "Prophecies " have indeed come to pass but the same can be said for Leonardo da Vinci.
🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)? I think that somewhere in this vastly populated planet it maybe true for someone who falls under each sign and each prediction it being right with anyone person consistently, no, unless they are making trying to make their lives fit it which I suppose some may do. Me it is never right so no I do not buy into it
🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself? A true Prophecy would be self fulfilling just as a true horoscope should be. If your doing anything to make it come true then it was a suggestion not a prophecy.

What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
Prophecies are often seen as a way that assists people to make a decision. In the past, in ancient Greece the oracle at Delphi was consulted a lot, and even if the answers or prophecies that were delivered were quite vague and open to interpretation, it gave people something to hang on to show that they were doing the right thing or at worst, a scapegoat because the prophecy would sometimes turn out to be totally wrong. As in: should we go to war with X and will we win? The prophecy might have seemed to indicate affirmative to both those questions, then when the war ended badly they had someone to blame. Same thing happens today, Scapegoats are always handy in times of war!

What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I agree with Lauren, to be honest. The unknown is what scares people and in a way, most religions are prophecies and are believed by so many because they predict what is going to happen after Death. Humanity is intrinsially afraid of anything it doesn't understand and it's quite difficult if not impossible, to understand Death and how one simply ceases to exist. In order not to have to wrap their head around it and due to fear, people have developed religions, which I argue are prophecies based on wishful thinking, sense of guilt and fear.

Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
I googled this and there are some who claim that some of his predictions were true, one referring to Hitler, another to Charles de Gaulle, yet another to the World Trade Center.. I don't know, but this one is fun:

The lost thing is discovered, hidden for many centuries.
Pastor will be celebrated almost as a God-like figure.
This is when the moon completes her great cycle,
But by other rumors he shall be dishonored.

Pastor = Shepherd in French Pasteur
Louis Pasteur (Pastor will be celebrated) is credited with discovering microbial decay (lost thing is discovered, hidden for many centuries). His breakthrough is credited with saving countless lives over the course of history.
However, why should he have been dishonored? hmm..

How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
Zero. I know people who are wildly different from the same sign and more generally speaking, there is no scientific evidence at all supporting the horoscope so ... though I do LOVE Trelawney

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
Curoisity in my case. Some are believers and take them as gospel.
🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
Probably, if you make enough prophesies at least one will happen.
🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
Not at all. Occasionally I read them for fun but not often.
🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I would not work to fulfill a prophecy. If it was doing something great that appealed to me I'd do it to win. If I did win, it would not be because it was fortold, it would be because of my own efforts. I don't believe misfortune can be blamed on anything or anyone, I don't blame my failures on anyone but myself and my successes are all due to my own efforts.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?

Honestly i've wondered that for years, I don't believe in prophecies so someone needs to tell me lol.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?

I don't know who that is.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?

I don't read horoscopes anymore because they are always wrong so I don't bother reading them now.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?

Depends if I want it to happen, but I find that if something is meant to happen then it will happen.

What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
Our desire to know what the future holds.

Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
I've Googled this and it seems like 7 out of 8 of his major prophecies became true. That's interesting, for sure.

How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I don't

Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
Depends on what great thing it is but I would let it fulfill itself just to prove that profecies don't work

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think there are universal 'knowings' that we all buy into on a sub or superconscious level. When a person is able to tap into that and verbalize it, we call it a prophecy. The reason it captures our interest so much is that we know it on the etheric level and recognize it as truth.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
Yes. Many (if not all). The death of the Golden King to the Young Lion, the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, the death of Kennedy.... the list is long, accurate.... and terrifying for the upcoming years before us.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
Do I stay in bed with the covers over my head if my hororscope says it's an 'inauspicious' day? Noooooo..... to I use it to keep an eye on things (good or bad) that might be going on around me, coming at me, opportunities or blockages that are occuring... Yes.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
Both. There's an old adage that says, "Good things come to those who wait." The second part of that is "As long as those who wait work their butts off while they're waiting." Part of the 'doing something great is actually DOING something great.'

What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think everyone wants to think he understnads how the world turns. To believe or know that it is not mere chance what is happening in the world. So if some things are predicted it can't just be chaos and chance can it.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
To be honest I never really read them so I cant say... but i think that from what I know fo these prophecies they are rather vague so with a lot of fantasy and creativity you surely can make them work for rather a lot situations. The same principle that applies to zodiacs

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I don't believe in the zodiacs... I always said - well I am so NOT my sign (I'm a libra) so everyone who believed in it was like - well you have to look at your ascendant. Welllll I'm a libra there too and the description still doesnt fit me the slightest.
Just for reference: libras are said to be vain... now I'd admit ot every fault of mine but vanity is not one of those. libras are also said to be even-tempered well just lets say not Yesa nope.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I believe in self-fulfilling prophesies... I probably would start to work against it just to look if I can change it or if by trying to work against it I just make it happen 😂😂😇

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
We morbidly wish to know what is coming to us, even if knowing will make us miserable. It's like poking a loose tooth.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
Probably. I don't know their content, but if you make enough predictions statistics says you should get at least 1 or 2 right.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I'm a bit of a skeptic, I must confess. But sometimes things like that are eerily accurate.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I'd hate to even learn a prophecy about myself in the first place. I guess it would depend on the prophecy though. If it was such a good thing I'd probably aim for it. But self-fulfilling prophecies are the way of ... well, prophecy.

What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think it is curiosity and a fear of the unknown
Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
I understand that some have, but I am not sure which
How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I do not take the blind bit of notice of it
Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I would let it fulfill itself. If it is meant to be, it will happen, probably in a way I least expect it to.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
The future is one great big unknown. People are often scared of this, so things that can give an insight will always be of interest

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true
I don't know enough to really comment.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
Not a lot really. They often seem like parts of it have come true when you look at it later, but that is just trying to make aspects of life fit the description in most cases. They are often vague but generally provide good advice

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I wouldn't do much different I don't think. If it came true- so be it.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think it's because of the possibility that we could have that kind of knowledge about what the future will bring and everyone are curious. We want to know what they are so we could see if they actually come true and we also want to hear good, promising things that would give us hope and motivate us to keep pushing ourselves towards our dreams.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I like to read or listen to the predictions and I like to think that they are true. The most accurate predictions I have heard are from tarot card readers and it's hard not to believe in them. I have heard some really great stuff about my future and for that reason I do want to believe that these are real and might happen. I don't believe every horoscope but I have found my own favourites where things seem to be just as they say and I love it.

How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I used to create birth charts for zodiac astrology. It was calculated by hand based on where and when a person was born. I made charts for my friends very often. I used to believe it a lot, even though I was not all thta good at interpreting a chart. I had friends who were very good at that and I used to go to them for readings. Many of the things that they analysed from my birth chart were very accurate.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think humans worry a lot about so things like prophecies offer the security of knowing what's going to happen.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
I don't know any of his prophecies.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
It worked out perfectly to me, so I believe in it. But I am not the type of person who keeps checking horoscope.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I would probably work towards it.

There’s a few reasons it could be. Most people have a thirst for learning/knowledge/nosey, I think that plays into in. Trying to understand the uncertain. Mysteries have intrigued humans for a very long time. It’s also nice to believe in something at times.

🌑 What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
For me personally, I think it's that wait to see if they do come true. Or even if little events that happen could match what was said to happen. It's similar with horoscopes, if you look hard enough you'll find something that aligns with what is predicted.

🌑 Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
There's a high chance some of the things came true, or at least partly. Whether that's because they were set to happen, or because someone delved so deeply that they found a match I couldn't say.

🌑 How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I actually prefer to read horoscopes at the end of the day. Then I like to fit parts of the day or events into that to see if they match up. I'm not one to read them and hope that stuff does or doesn't happen, it's just fun to see if I can match things up.

🌑 Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?

I'm not sure. I'd probably be very conscious about it, and maybe it would affect the decisions I made. A big part of whether I'd work towards it or just let it happen would depend on how important it would be to me for it to succeed. Gonna end war and suffering - yea I'll work for it. Gonna get a sunday dinner at the end of the day - I'll leave that to fate.

- What do you think it is about prophecies that capture our interest?
I think that humans have a hard time with the unknown because our brains want to be able to make sense of everything around us, so something that can eliminate the unknown is very interesting to humans. I think the future is an especially scary thing for most people because it is always looming and no one knows what the right choice will really be, which would make prophecies more attractive.

- Do you think that any of Nostradamus' prophecies came true?
I believe that his predictions are generic enough that we have been able to fit several of them to events that have happened. A true prophesy is one that gives a definitive answer about the future and is inevitable, like the one in Harry Potter. Any prediction that seems like it could pertain to a certain event is too ambiguous to me; it has to be obvious or I don't believe that the future was predicted.

- How much do you believe your horoscope (either Zodiac or Chinese Zodiac)?
I believe that it is fun to look at and that I do happen to fit most of the things it says about me, but I don't believe in it accurately predicting the events of any given day or month. I believe that we are shaped partially by the time we are born because certain things happen during those times. For example I am a Libra and I wonder if my charming nature could have been shaped by the fact that I was born right before the major holidays started and therefore had a lot of people around me early in life or if my calculating ways could have been shaped by everyone getting a little more serious to prepare for winter.

- Imagine that a prophecy had been told about you doing something great. Would you work to fulfill it? Or would you let it fulfill itself?
I would let it happen on its own. I think that if fate is real then it can't be forced because then it wouldn't be fate anymore.
