“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”
Carl Sagan

C H A L L E N G E
Frankenstein is a monster beyond its time. A monster built of knowledge, of theory, of catastrophe. Although he was created with every minute detail, carefully studied and appraised, there was, and will always be, the error of humanity. We think and create beyond ourselves and yet are completely bewildered when those things fail. With great reward comes great consequence. Are you afraid?

So am I.

The Department of Mysteries is, first and foremost, centered around the research and discovery of mysteries. You are an Unspeakable writing for scholarly journals about your research. After all, some things are meant to be shared and others are better left unsaid. A catastrophe has shaken the Department of Mysteries and truly tested its Unspeakables' collective ability to keep their mouths shut. What did they see? Experience?
Demons? A Black Hole? Did time stand still?

It is yours to decide; the world is your snotty little oyster. Write an article on the event sharing the catastrophic experiment without saying exactly what happened. Omit details that would ruin your research or cause trouble for the Department.

Omg I'm in love with this prompt.

//So I've already written about the DoM a bit, can I take a concept or idea that I've explored previously and write an entirely new piece for this? Or should the idea itself also be a new one?

That should be fine as long as what is written itself is new for this prompt.

Are we to write this as a journalist, quoting an Unspeakable, or just as an Unspeakable who's written the article themselves?

You are an Unspeakable in on the research whether directly or an observer.

Ok I am a bit confused on the requirements.

The first point I take to being more like a journal entry like Day 4: This is happening

but the second I take to be more a paper in an actual scientific journal that details the experiment from start to finish

can you clarify which you are looking for?

and if it is the second can it be a sort of excerpt from the article?

A scientific journal.
And an excerpt should be fine.

Okay, I have an idea for this BUT it is a very creative, imaginative sort of thing which might end up more akin to a creative piece detailing the scientific experiment rather than a journalistic article/scientific paper. Is that okay? Would a piece of creative writing fit the brief, please???

I noticed mistake:

"Frankenstein" is the name of the Doctor not the creature made.

But, in my opinion the Doctor Victor von Frankenstein was the real monster, not the creature that he created.

Frankenstein wasn't even a doctor either, he was a college drop-out.

Another teensy clarification question on format, sorry if I'm a pain in the ass

Are you looking for something like this scientific article but dancing around the topic a bit for secrecy, or more like a functional research paper with sensitive information redacted?

It needs to be at least in a paper format.

I think I'll hold off on this contest then as my idea wouldn't be at all easy to write as a scientific paper and it's too good an idea to squander in a contest that it wouldn't qualify for. A pity as it's kind of Dark so perfect for the Department of Mysteries and Halloween. 😒

I'm sorry but I'm still confused. Can it be a news story on the event as that is journalism?
