"Love is a many splendored thing,
Love lifts us up where we belong,
All you need is love!"
- "Elephant Love Medley",
Moulin Rouge Soundtrack

What is love? Love is multifaceted and never the same for everyone. Love truly does not distinguish between race, gender, or culture. It doesn't even need to be a romantic or sexual love. While the meaning rings true (to feel great affection for someone), the rest of it is up to us to determine with our preferences and experiences. Love just is.

Love - at least romantic love - is its own genre in literature, film, music, art... pretty much all the fine art categories. There are numerous instances where romance is found even in the strangest of places within other genres as well. (What horror movie needs a romantic subplot?!) Some of these have gone on to become true classics in their category and are the first ones to be named when referencing a romantic movie or a romantic song. They are also the ones that everyone seems to go to for ideas for dates or any type of courting behaviour (which, let's be honest here, can be cheesy as anything but also very sweet, especially if your significant other uses your favourite romance movie as the basis for your date). Guess that's why it makes them popular, eh? Let's not even go into the romance/love playlist that anyone might have but don't want to admit it. ( Yes, I do have one myself. Not ashamed of it either as it's playing as I'm typing this up.) The first dance at a wedding? The love song that you and your partner have claimed as yours. The one for the child/parent? Still a love song, but it's the one that makes the child and their parent feel close with because its a song they both enjoy. Love is certainly in everything because of its many definitions and meanings.

Discussion

Now, let's discuss this all-encompassing emotion. Some questions to get you started:

❤ Do you have a favourite love song, movie, book, etc?
❤ What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?
❤ Have you ever used anything from a romance movie on a date? How did it turn out? (If you're willing to share!)

You can earn one ink spot per week for participating in this discussion for a total of 4 ink spots in the month of September. Participation is defined as making one or more posts that are on topic during the month. There is no need to claim these spots; we will add them without a claim post.

I’m not sure if this counts as a love song but I really love She by dodie. The style of it is so peaceful yet so powerful. It sounds like what bittersweet means. Another dodie song is Would You Be So Kind. This song is so upbeat and lovely. It’s just the sort of song that makes you want to dance. It’s not exactly a happy song in its lyrics but it sounds that way in the actual music. I don’t really like the whole romance genre in books and movies so I don’t really have a favorite there.

Do you have a favourite love song, movie, book, etc?

The first love song that came to mind was 'We Belong Together' by Rickie Lee Jones - it really pulls at my heart strings. I also love 'The Call' by Regina Spektor and 'A Case of You' by Joni Mitchell. For me, the best love songs have fantastic melody and lyrics. It's funny that the first three love songs that I thought of are all by female singer-songwriters.

Movies - lots of them! I think the old movies are the most romantic. A favourite is Casablanca with Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Also Notorious with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. I also loved the love story between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind.

Three of the movies of the late 20th century that I found very romantic are
Out of Africa, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford
The Great Gatsby, starring Mia Farrow and Robert Redford
The Way We Were, starring Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford
Robert Redford was a great romantic leading man when he was young!

I am Sam is a twist on a love story between a disabled father who wants to be able to look after his daughter. Really well written and acted, and lots of songs by the Beatles in the soundtrack.

I am sure that I will think of more movies and songs soon!

I love (ha-ha) the story of Beren and Luthien. Tolkien was a literary genius and he considered his wife to be his Luthien. It makes the story even ore poignant and perfect in my eyes

❤ What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?

In music I have seen a lot of sons about obsessive love or inappropriate love. For example Every Breathe you Take and Don't Stand by the Police. However I do love those songs, lol.

Do you have a favourite love song, movie, book,

I have to admit that Romance is not my favourite genre when reading books and is not the genre of movie that i would go to either. having said that I have been inspired by the reading competition in the library to read different genres of books and in some case try out new ones. One author whose books I have subsequently enjoyed is Nicholas Sparks, so I would have to name him as my favourite romance author.

Funny enough, I really love the movie Moulin Rouge. My favorite love song is from that movie. It;s "Come What May." I've listened to that song so many times! My favorite romance book is "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Phillpa Greggory. I'm really interested in the Tudor history so anything that has to do with that I read. I also like to read romance Fanfiction, especially it it's Harry Potter related.

I also like other romantic movies. I love some older movies like: Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, Well, honestly anything with Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn is amazing. I also like newer romances movies like: Rent, Anastasia, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, and Pocahontas.

My favorite love songs would be 'Can you hear my heart' by Epik high (ft. Lee Hi) and 'Some' by Bolbbalgan4, I dont exactly have any favorite love movies. One of my favorite books is Tolkien's story of Beren and Luthien.

❤ What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?
From what I've seen in some music, movies and shows are mostly platonic love, the romantic kind of love and unrequired love.

❤ I love Beren and Luthien's love story as well! It's one of my favorite parts in all of Tolkien's works. The other is the friendship that evolves between Legolas and Gimli. Is there any particular parts that drew you to their story @Kestrel-Winter @Aurora132 ?

Actually, both "Come What May" and "Elephant Love Medley" is on my Love Songs playlist and both may or may not have been two songs that were playing during writing this up.

What do y'all look for in romance movies? Is it the overall storyline? Or the happy ending?

I think that Beren and Luthien's devotion against all odd is really the ultimate in love stories.

That it is. The challenges that they face to be together and the fact that they overcome those together is wonderful. I've always loved that about their story as well.

I had to order the book after seeing your posts here on it I have read everything he ever wrote I thought but apparently I was wrong I do know they were in The Silmarillion. which is why I thought I had read it but it was published in 2017 from his manuscripts. I know it will be a great read as Tolkien could never write a bad story

Not really for movies or books. In songs....waay too many but all of them Hindi. Hindi poetry can be beautiful
In books, I think small moments of couples like Molly and Arthur Weasley; Rosa and Hans Hubberman can be really touching.
What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?
Lots. Those of mother and children(use the two examples above😂); Liesel and Max in the Book Thief, siblings' loving banter are what come to my mind.

❤ Do you have a favourite love song, movie, book, etc?

favourite romance book would have to be the Too Far series by Abbi Glines, favourite song would have to be Beautiful Mess by Kristian Kostov I'm obsessed with this song at the moment lol, favourite love movie would be Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

❤ What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?

These days I find it's mainly break-up songs but I find the odd song about friendship and love, I still love The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You, obviously because of friends but also because it relates to most friendships.

❤ Have you ever used anything from a romance movie on a date? How did it turn out? (If you're willing to share!)

I'm going to be really honest and say I've never been on a date LOL I was with a guy for 5 years and he didn't do date it was just sleepovers so nope never tried 😆

It's tiring to see so many songs, movies, books, etc about love. It's everywhere. It gets repetitive.

Do you have a favourite love song, movie, book, etc? I'm not big on romantic books or movies. I find the romance books to be a bit cliche and have no plot. I like the romantic comedies of the 00's like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and You've Got Mail etc (also I love Love Actually) and I like tv shows like Roswell (the original) and Dawson's Creek that lean more towards romance. I do really like love songs. Can You Feel The Love Tonight by Elton John is so perfect and as a rock lover, my favourite love songs tend to be power ballads like Is This Love by Whitesnake, Listen to Your Heart by Roxette, and I Don't Want To Miss a Thing.

When I was 11 years old, I pulled off my first all-nighter reading a book called "Along for the Ride", a story that follows the studious Auden and her romance with some boy whose name I can't quite recall. I lost the book and don't remember much of it anymore, but I truly did love it. I rarely get my hands on romance books anymore. Most of the romantic stories I read are fanfiction. 😂 As for movies, I found He's Just Not that Into You kind of funny when I was younger. I also love movies like Koe no Katachi (which focuses more on friendship than romance) and recently watched Tenki no Ko, which was absolutely brilliant (although I may be slightly biased). As for songs, I enjoy many. I love songs like Yume Hanabi (Mafumafu), Koi no Hajimaru Hoteishiki (After the Rain), Charles (Balloon), Baby Blue Eyes (A Rocket to the Moon, who broke up a few years ago), Hold Onto Me (Mayday Parade), Remembering Sunday (All Time Low), and so many others! I love love songs! Most of these love songs are on the more sad side, but I'd still consider them love songs.

So much platonic love! Lots of anime openings, particularly sports anime openings, focus on friendship being the thing that keeps someone going forward. Books also have a lot of platonic love. Just look at Harry and Ron (although their bond can be interpreted as more romantic depending on how you view them)!

It wasn't exactly a date, but playing a song for a person you like is a very popular thing in media. I once played Hold Onto Me and Mr. Right for the girl I liked. She seemed pretty happy about it, although we broke up a few months later. 😂

I don't have any song, movie or book at the moment. I haven't been struck by love that way yet. Love can mean so many things and one book that I feel love is the one I feel for my parents. The Incredible Journey of Edward Tulane.

❤ What other forms of love do you see in music, books, films, etc?
I do think music has love songs but none that I can relate to at the moment. I know that love is found in many movies and one is the Notebook.

❤ Have you ever used anything from a romance movie on a date? How did it turn out? (If you're willing to share!)

I don't copy anything from a movie or book, I just go with the flow...

I think that I have watched the Baz Luhrmann version of R+J at least 10 times, probably more. That is such a brilliant film, I love the way it is edited by Jil Bilcok - she is a genius. Leonardo di Caprio and Claire Dances were perfect in the parts of R+J, and the rest of the cast was excellent too. The sondtrack was fantastic. It was also a genius nove to update the setting to somewhere like Miami or Florida, but to keep the Shakespearean dialogue.

I cannot fault that film at all - your post reminded me that it is one of my all-time favourite romantic movies. Must watch again soon!
