It is time for a fun read along! By now, we have all reread the Harry Potter books over and over again, but there isn’t anything wrong with that, right? No harm in wanting to relive the magic that has brought you all the feels!

For the next several months, we will dive into Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire together, reading two chapters at a time, with discussion questions and activities to follow that will relate to the current chapters. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s join in on all the fun that is about to happen!

"Harry - we've just got to grit our teeth and do it“ , said Ron on Friday morning, in a tone that suggested they were planning the storming of an impregnable fortress. "When we get back to the common room tonight, we'll both have partners - agreed?"
Chapter 22 J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Chapter 21: The House-Elf Liberation Front

Harry sends a letter to Sirius, together with Ron and Hermione. Ron still seems to be ashamed that he had not believed Harry. Back in the common room Gryffindor House can't help but celebrate. Fred and George took food from the kitchens, which interests Hermione about how they got into the kitchens. Many of his fellow Gryffindors ask Harry to open the egg. When the egg is opened, it only screeches and the students do not see anything else in the egg. They all have ideas about what Harry should do for the second task. Would it be fighting a banshee as Seamus said? O r perhaps the Cruciatus Curse, which Neville is afraid of?
The Weasley twins end up telling Hermione how to get into the kitchen. She should tickle the pear on a portrait. Poor Neville eats a canary cream and turns into a canary.

During Care for Magical Creatures, the students still take care of Blast-Ended Skrewts. They should find out whether the Skrewts will be hibernating by shutting them in boxes. Unfortunately, the Skrewts do not want this. Rita Skeeter shows up during class and asks for an interview with Hagrid.
During Divination Professor Trelawney again predicts Harry's death.

In the evening Hermione drags the boys to the Hogwarts kitchens. There they find out that Dobby is working at Hogwarts and is getting paid. Dumbledore also has hired Winky. Although they find out that Winky is not at all pleased to work there. She sobs and is devastated that she was freed.
Harry gives Dobby permission to visit him now and then.

Hermione thinks it is great that Dobby works at Hogwarts because he might change the other elves' minds. The elves however are horrified by Dobby's behaviour.

Take Aways:

- The Weasley twins are ambitious in working on pranks and products they can use for pranks. This is the start of their future business.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione want to help Hagrid, as they are sure Rita Skeeter will not write true statements about Hagrid.
- We get to see the Hogwarts kitchens and how they work, by the help of house elves. We also see how Hermione tries to convince the elves that being a free elf is best for them, though they are appalled at the idea of this.
- We learn more about how house elves are conditioned to serve their households, as Dobby still can't speak evil of the Malfoys and has to punish himself.

Chapter 22: The Unexpected Task

During Transfiguration the students are informed about the Yule Ball, which is a traditional part of the Triwizard Tournament. It takes place on Christmas and is for all fourth years and up to attend. After class Professor Mc Gonagall informs Harry that the champions should open the ball with their dance partners. Harry tries to tell her that he does not dance.

Then several girls ask Harry to the ball, but he turns them all down. Since the first task he has less of a hard time.

Hagrid tells Harry, Ron and Hermione that Rita Skeeter wanted to get him to say negative things about Harry.

Fred and George tell Harry and Ron that they should hurry up in asking someone to the ball. Fred says he will take Angelina to the ball, but he has not asked her yet. He then asks her on the spot if she would go to the ball with him and she agrees.

Ron tells Harry that they should step on it so they do not have to go to the ball with a less attractive girl. Hermione is annoyed that Ron wants to take the most attractive girl to the ball instead of also paying attention to her personality.

Ron tells Harry that they should just do it and ask someone. So Harry asks Cho to go to the ball with him. It turns out she already has a date. Ron is upset because he tried to ask Fleur to the ball. Neville asked Hermione but she claimed to already have a date. Ron thinks that she said that because she did not want to go with Neville.

Hermione later tells him that she really does have a date. Other people have noticed that she is a girl even if Ron hasn't.

Harry then asks Parvati, and whether Lavender wants to go with Ron. But Lavender is already going with Seamus, so Parvati suggests her twin sister Padma as a date for Ron.

Take Aways:

- Understandably the Yule Ball, something that is unique at Hogwarts, is the most important thing on the minds of the students. Especially thinking about who will ask whom.
- Ron only cares about getting the most attractive date, and Hermione reminds him that it is also important for a date to have a nice personality.
- According to Harry, it is a whole other kind of task to ask a girl out for a date. They travel in packs and they giggle all the time, according to Harry. Harry and Ron both have difficulties with finding a date, while this is really easy for Fred.
- Hermione is a girl, as Ron is reminded in this chapter. Someone has already asked her to the ball and she agreed.

Some Questions to Consider:

- In these chapters, we see Hermione caring for the house elves that work in the kitchen. She worries about the house elves working without getting paid. What would be something else Hermione should start with were she to help the house elves?
- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?

Feel free to discuss any of these questions or add your own to keep the discussion going! If there is anything you thought was interesting in these chapters, feel free to discuss those as well. Remember that there are no right or wrong answers, so please be respectful, and abide by all HEX Terms.

That is a good question. Maybe she could have started a magical knitting group and they could make blankets for the elves. That way while elves are not being set free against their will, they are getting some care and comfort and knowledge that people do care.

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?

Well since they have bat-like ears, maybe they have sonar or something high pitched that only they can hear.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?

I think the Veela charm is like a very strong charismatic force. Just like young witches and wizards have to learn to control their magic, I think the same principle works with the charm effect.

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?

By just asking. Maybe they should have put a poster on the Gryffindor notice board, lol.

I was actually thinking something along these lines...or even like some kind of telepathy or something.

In terms of Harry and Ron finding dates, I think it would have actually been beneficial to them to just go as a group with the two of them and Hermione and maybe some other friends. Harry and Hermione could have shared the Yule Ball dance for the champions, but they'd all be there together technically.

Hermione needed to understand their background, beliefs, customs and slowly intervene in a positive way instead of forcing them to change. She needed to educate them to help them understand. She didn't know that she can harm them mentally too. They could be distructive like Winky who started to drink.

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
They are magical and able to move to a place where they sense their own kind in distress. It may sound funny, but maybe their ears can pick up signals.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I think it's something magical they are able to release like a spell. I think Veelas can control their charm once they become old enough to learn they have this gift just like a Metamorphmagus.

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
They could have each ask someone from the beginning when it was announce. Ask their friends like Hermione and Ginny. Both girls wanted to go out too.

What would be something else Hermione should start with were she to help the house elves? I feel like she should have been holding meetings with all of the elves ..letting them have a voice and maybe share with her what things they may want changed ..or even not changed .. she probably would have had a more clear idea of what and why they were ok with the life they were living. And she may have also had an easier time maybe pointing out some things that they may have decided maybe should have changed

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
Maybe they sent out some type of vibrations ..that could only be felt within the elf to whom they were trying to locate.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
I don't really know what to think about this ..but maybe that is just how veela are made and maybe they shouldn't have to try to be any different ..maybe others should learn how to adapt

Health and welfare first, are their medical and dietary needs being met, are they getting breaks, sufficient sleep, not being over worked, are they treat with respect and in a humane manner by the staff and students. Do they have private Quarters with beds and area to relax and lounge , attended to their own needs and desires for entertainment
- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
Perhaps a form of Telepathy, either physical or mental
- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works?
The same way every woman's does it just is stronger
Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I think just about every female magical or not learns to control her charms in one way or another it can be a physical attribute or a mental one but most woman learn to use what they have to attract those they desire or just flurt.
- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily? Well It would have been a simple matter to see who was approaching them rather than focusing their efforts on the impossible. Hard Harry been paying any attention He would have noticed Cho's interest in him and asked her before Cedric asked her.

I think just a group meeting where the house elves could voice their opinions. It could be held weekly. Although her intentions were good, she needed to know how the house elves felt before barging in and trying to change things. Listening to all the house elves would have been a good first start.
- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
Some kind of sense that would let them know where others are.
- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I agree with Sandie556. Girls learn at a young age how to attract boys(or girls). I think the Veela have a stronger way of attracting attention. I think it may be a spell they use on themselves to make them look more desirable.
- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
Simply asking earlier. Waiting until the last minute is a bad idea.

I think the thing that needed to be fixed more than getting paid was how they were treated. They seemed to be fine with not getting paid, even Dobby who was free didn't want as much as Dumbledore offered him. They like to work and as long as their master provides them with a clean, happy environment they seem to have everything they need.

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
I wonder if house elves have some sort of tracker magic located within them and that's why their master can just say their name and they are summoned. If that was the case, then I'm guessing it could be used by other house elves as well.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I don't think it can be controlled. It seems to be part of their essence and they radiate it from within them. I'm sure they can turn up the charm, just like any person can, but I don't think they can actually turn it off.

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
It would have been much easier if they hadn't waited until the last minute. Also the students under fourth year would have probably been desperate to go.

I think that she should focus more on the attitude of the people who "own" house elves have towards them. The House elves at Hogwarts seem to be well treated and Dumbledore allows them freedoms if they want them, I think that she should be focusing on getting all house elves treated in a similar way before she tries too much more.

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
House elves have their own magics that allow them to carry out orders. If that requires the them to find others then it should be possible. I guess as a free elf, Dobby would be able to carry out his own orders.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I think that they should definitely be able to control it, and who says that Fleur can't control it. I thought she was turning it on to get the attention of a boy at the time, maybe she hadn't got the subtleties yet but she was able to turn it on and off at least. I have no idea how it worlds though, maybe some kind of hazing?

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
By having the confidence to ask a girl!

Retirement planning and a retirement home for when they are too old to work anymore, Maternity leave. Sick leave. Vacation time. There's all kinds of things that workers need help with, even if they are magical creatures.

- House elves seem to have different ways to communicate, as Dobby could find Winky after she was sacked. What do you think those ways could be?
Possibly some kind of low grade psychic field that ties all House Elves together in a subconscious hive mind network. Like worker bees or ants.

- Fleur catches Ron (and other boys) with her Veela charm. It seems she can't control this (yet). How do you think the Veela charm works? Do you think a Veela can learn to control her charm?
I think it's a matter of pheromones. They would be especially in flux during her teenage years when everybody's hormones go nuts.

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
Welllll....Harry COULD have said yes when any of the girls asked him earlier and asked whoever he said yes to to scare up a date for Ron from among her friends. ORRRRR.... Ron could have not acted like a pill and asked Hermione (and not as a last choice) and asked her to bring one of her female friends for Harry. ORRRRRRRRRRR.... they could have told McGonagall when she informed Harry that it was his responsibility to dance that she had to procure him a suitable partner for that horror of horrors ORRRRRRRRRRR.... they could have grown a pair of spines and asked two girls and then actually showed them a good time instead of being total jerks.

I guess that to improve their situation in life, the same method would be used as what is used in the Muggle world. Firstly, education is the key to improving one's future. With education, a person can get a better job, make better choices, earn more money. And they will also want their children to have a better life than they did, so they will educate their children as well. It is how people rise from poverty to middle income to wealth.

- How do you think Ron and Harry could have found a date more easily?
Ron and Harry seem to have very poor communication skills. They get on with Hermione, but they are hopeless with other girls. I think they need to improve their communication skills somehow.
