"Dear Tom," he recited, watching Harry's horrified face, "I think I'm losing my memory. There are rooster feathers all over my robes and I don't know how they got there. Dear Tom, I can't remember what I did on the night of Hallowe'en, but a cat was attacked and I've got paint all down my front. Dear Tom, Percy keeps telling me I'm pale and I'm not myself. I think he suspects me ... There was another attack today and I don't know where I was. Tom, what am I going to do? I think I'm going mad ... I think I'm the one attacking everyone, Tom!"
- Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 17

It's hard to imagine being so dependent on a talking book, but considering how isolated Ginny felt from even her own brothers, it's no surprise she clung to the slightest shred of sympathy. Never mind that it was her own attachment to the diary that was isolating her in the first place. Think about how frightened she must have been, and how bewildered with the world.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?

These questions are a guide to start your thoughts - don't feel obliged to answer them all. Everyone who contributes at least two sentences to the discussion by March 14th at 11:59 pm will receive a ticket to April's Book of Records. All posts must adhere to HEX terms and Magical Archives Rules.

Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Yes, and still have, because I actually got into a Tom and Ginny situation.
- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Yes and no. I did not get attached to it in so far as I loved in the object in any way, but I am emotionally attached to some of my Mangas as they bear my memories and also to some of my books both because of the content and because of the memories attached to them.
- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think she might have been either surprised or curious. For example wondering what kind of magic is lurking in that book, or why the book is talking in that manner. It depends on how familiar she was with various spells and curses and the idea that books can communicate in a certain manner.
- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Yes and no. I do not think they could have figured out what was going on in that particular case and helped her there, because she was hiding and it would be intrusive and wrong to put pressure on her. However, they could have given her a more stabile environment, more care and encouragement prior to all incendents so she would not have fallen pray to Tom that easily.
- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
Perhaps because it gave her the opportunity to be open and accepted, something she did not feel was there in her family. I do not think she had troubles to make friends, I think that maybe the friendships were still not too deep, to open up to those new friends. Also not every friend is one you can easily open up to, or feel to be on one wave length with, some friends are more of a good aquitance than a friend and/or they just do not have the personality where you feel you can open up, although they are a good person essentially.

Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Nothing that is out of the ordinary. I just don't share personal things with anyone.
Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
It depends on how you view emotionally attached. There have been items that have meant a lot to me and bring back good memories but not enough to hang on to it if I were to need to let it go.
How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I would imagine shocked at first. Then curious as to what else the diary might be able to do.
Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Not really. I doubt that she would have shared any information about the diary with anyone.
Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
It was there for her. I would guess she got more comfortable with it the more she wrote in it. She would be pouring out her feelings into it. It would have been her way of dealing with things that were going on around her. Almost everyone struggles with things at a new place. I imagine it would have been hard to make new friends at first. It takes awhile to trust people. It can be lonely at first. I think having the diary in her second year made it easier for her. She could share and not be worried about others finding things out.

I think Ginny might have been scared. She was at a new school and didn't have anyone that she could talk to. Her family consists of brothers, so she could have needed a girl to talk to, and her mother was so far away. I feel bad that she felt so alone she got wrapped up in a book, but I also know it's easier to talk to strangers than to people you know, so that also could have contributed to her ability to open up to the book, but not people. And once things started happening, she likely felt like she couldn't talk to anyone because she was already in too deep.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Not really. There are things I haven't told them, but that was mainly because they didn't need to know about it. For example I would have told them details about my personal life if they had asked or if it was going to impact them, but otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
There are objects that remind me of certain times or people and I do have emotional connections to them, but that is for the memories rather than the objects themselves.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I'd guess a bit confused as it doesn't seem normal even for the wizarding world, and very scared.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
I think they would have done if they had known enough about it. I'd imagine that Ginny would have kept this quite quiet and as she was about to go away to school for the first time I'd imagine that they might have assumed that she was nervous about that

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
I think she felt alone at home, isolated among all her brothers and probably felt pressure on her arrival at Hogwarts to live up to the reputations of her brothers (like Ron did when he started). If she was already attached to the diary when she arrived I can imagine that it would have hindered her forming connections to her classmates

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?

Yes....I don't believe anyone even knows about it to this day...

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?

Yes I have. I have a trunk full of my son's things that I could never part with....

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?

I think she might have been a bit confused, but excited at the same time, almost as if it was a new toy.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?

I don't know. Its possible that she was almost invisible in her large family, being the youngest of 7.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?

I think she got attached because of the attention and pseudo kindness directed to her. I think she might have been shy, but I think its more she was reluctant to make friends as she already had her friend in the diary.

Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
I think everyone has a secret they feel they cant tell their loved ones about, at some point. It always turns out that telling someone is the best way to get help.

How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think Ginny was probably very confused and afraid to tell anyone thinking they would consider her mad. Further instances where she couldn't remember things also made her think she was going crazy.

Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Her family absolutely could have helped her. Being more experienced wizards they would have identified the problem a lot sooner and perhaps Ginny wouldn't have ended up in this situation.

Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly?
I think Ginny got attached so quickly because it was her first year at Hogwarts and had no friends of her own yet. And being the only girl in her family she couldn't relate to her brothers.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
yes. Sometimes the things that mean the most to us could destroy us if they become common knowledge.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Yes. I still am. A purple stuffed elephant from my Great Aunt Arlene. She was the first person close to me that I lost. That was January of 2013 but it still hurts.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think she felt understood. That's a feeling we all desperately desire, but we rarely achieve.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
I think they certainly would have if they had known. But often times people don't think about how others feel. And when they do they do not always try to comfort us in a way that works for us.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
I think Ginny was attached to the book because she was trying to hard to please her brothers that she had a low self esteem. And the book made her feel special. Like she was worth more than her brothers thought she was.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?

Yes.More than one. I justify it by saying it would only hurt them.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?

I had a stuffed animal when I was young that meant a great deal to me.as I have gotten older there was pieces of jewelry and now it is things from loved ones who have passed on. I know they are only things, but they help comfort me.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?

Comforted and no longer so alone. It is always hard to go to a new place and while her brothers had each other in the boys' dorm, she had only herself.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?

I think that they could have but, they were a bit too wrapped up in themselves. At the very least though, Ron or Percy could have asked Hermione to keep an eye on Ginny.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?

I think she was used to being the only girl and doing things for herself. Therefore she was a bit standoffish and she knew that the book would not judge her, while the other girls might think less of her or that she wasn't girly enough for them.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones? Yep.
- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object? Most definitely. Many in in fact. Most of them hold childhood/nostalgic/family significance.
- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her? Initially, I think she would have been terrified but, after the initial shock, I think she would then have been excited about this amazing magical she has discovered.
- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more? If they had known about the diary, then they could have done something to protect her, but since Ginny kept it a secret, she did not give them the opportunity to do so.
- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year? It was something excitingly magical that was all her own and it was something special, to keep as her little secret. Also, it can be difficult to tell those you are close to how you feel. When you are writing into a faceless entity, it feels like you have a living, non-judging secret-keeper (not in the charm/spell sense).

Yea, being on Social Media. Parents did not want us having a Facebook account. I don't get on Facebook but I do stay on HEX.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
No, that would go against my belief.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
Ginny being magical must have been amazed, frightened, and scared.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Yes, all of her brothers should have been watching her or checking on her.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
The book gave her all the attention she needed. The book gave her positive strokes and supported her in all she did and listened to all her problems.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones? Yes, I have. When I was a kid something very terrible happened and it wasn't until I went through a lot of therapy in my late teen years that I was finally able to admit it to my parents. Also, I have two other big secrets that I can't share with my family.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object? I am not really sure. As a kid, sure. To stuffies and what not. But nothing that really sticks out in memory.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her? I think she probably felt, finally, listened to. As the youngest in her family and the only girl I'm sure she felt overlooked all the time. The diary was finally listening to HER and making her feel special and important.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more? Percy definitely could have thought a lot less of his own actions with Penelope and maybe paid attention. Ron was completely oblivious and really should have picked up on the fact that his younger sister wasn't acting herself. Same with Fred and George. But ultimately, you can't make someone get help or tell. They have to do that on their own. All we can do is provide a safe place and let them know they can share when they are ready.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year? She didn't seem to struggle making friends later on. She seemed to be well liked. So I'm not sure if she had trouble in the first year. Maybe it was just her way of coping of finally going to school like the rest of her family and coming in to her own, plus dealing with her first serious crush on a boy.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
yes, sometimes especially if it involves a loved one ..it can be hard to tell others, to know who you can trust and who will really listen

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
yes I have I was very attached emotionally to a stuffed animal when I was little

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think she felt needed and very curious.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
I think she kept her secret hidden very well, and as an adult, I understand how sometimes it really can be hard for others to see that something bad may be happening. If the secret is being hidden well, then no one is really looking for it
.
- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
I think she probably did struggle some, she was enamored with Harry and a little embarrassed about this.. She was younger than the trio. but still wanted to be a part of that group so she may have inadvertently alienated some of the kids her age. Once she found the diary I think she became obsessed with helping and befriending her new secret friend.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Yes, I did and still do. I don't believe i ever trust anyone enough to tell them. I will just be with me until i die and then be lost.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Yes, mostly as a kid though, if i would get a new stuffed animal and it be the new favourite, i feel guilty. And apologise to the previous one.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
Probably just curious at first, She was very used to magic so would not be scared right away.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
With several bog brothers around i would have thought they would have looked out for her more

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?

Being in the shadow of her brothers, she probably just wanted something that was just hers. I don't think she struggled to make friends, i think the book is what made her isolate her from others. If it would not have been given to her i don't think she would have had any problems

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
No, I can honestly say I haven't There are things I haven't always been proud of but talking things out always helps, but I have never done anything I would need to hide
- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Yes still am Things my brothers gave me things my children and grand children made for me things from my husband things that have been in my family
- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think she felt lonely and a bit confused and probably a bit frightened as well yet her need for some understanding and comfort over rode that fear
- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more? I think those that were around her at school who knew her should have noticed some signs of the change in her demeanor
- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly?
I think she needed a confidant someone who would never tell her secrets nor tease her. She wasn't used to having female friends as yet, and listening to the way young girls talk, probably kept her holding her silence about her own feelings.
Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
Ginny is a warm out going girl I doubt that was an issue, although I doubt she truly trusted any with personal matters. Girls that age tend to be a bit chatty and terrible at keeping secrets . I do think it was one of the reasons she and Luna became friends Luna was the type to keep a confidence. But I doubt she knew Luna at that stage which would have been a great benefit and most likely she would never have needed the diary

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Yes, but not anymore. I didn't like doing it and decided not to do it again.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
When I was little I was very attached to my blanket. It was a safety net that went with me everywhere.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
Probably shocked, but since she didn't get a lot of attention it was probably nice too.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
If she had been home then maybe her mother or father would have noticed, but at school all she had were her brothers and they were children too with their own problems.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
Tom was apparently very charming and she didn't get a lot of attention from her family, so it would be easy to fall prey to the book. She probably didn't get a lot of opportunity to talk about her feelings either, except with maybe her mother but she wasn't there. I know that everyone struggles to make friends when going to a new school and being possessed by the diary probably didn't help.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Yes, I have had secrets that I haven't felt I could share. But many of those times were based on wanting to save face and not admit I need help. I'm trying to get better about asking for help when I need it and realize that reaching out is an act of strength, not weakness.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
There are many objects near-and-dear to me that I wouldn't get rid of. Some may be considered clutter, but I haven't pushed myself to part with these items.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Yes, if they knew what was going on. I'm sure it was hard for them to know though. She wasn't near her parents, and they are the ones most likely to notice something was wrong. I think her brothers were so involved in their own lives that they wouldn't have noticed anything out-of-the-norm with Ginny.

Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
I've had plenty of secrets that I couldn't share with anyone, simply because they wouldn't understand. Our friends and family love us and want the best for us, but sometimes, what they consider to be the best for us may not be what we want.

Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Yes, quite a number of things, including toys, books and clothes! Even a diary I used to keep when I was younger! But I've never been as attached as Ginny became with her diary.

How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think she felt surprised and confused at first. But when the diary spoke/wrote words of comfort and support to her, she became more invested in the diary. Also, Tom Riddle was a very persuasive person.

Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Maybe. They could've helped her settle in at school better, or at the very least, observed that she felt frightened and confused, and asked her to get help. The fact that Percy did notice her "abnormal" behaviour is a redeeming quality of his.

Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
She probably believed that she'd struggle to make friends. Coming from a family of poor, blood-traitors, maybe she didn't have many fancy objects like the others and thought others would ridicule her for her family. She also seemed distrustful of others, at least emotionally, which is why she poured out her heart in the diary.

- Have you ever had a secret you couldn't share even with your loved ones?
Yes.

- Have you ever been emotionally attached to an inanimate object?
Many times. Although not alive, objects are imbued with their own type of spirit; of the person who made them, of anyone who has previously owned them, of the memories of times and events associated with them. They vibrate with those energies and we are drawn to certain items with a vibration or energy that we recognize and /or like. Then there's our own history with the item that gives it our energy as well. It's very easy to find yourself bound to an inanimate object.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I think it made her feel very special. The book wasn't talking to just anybody, it was talking specifically and solely to HER. As someone who had always lived in her brothers shadows I think it made her feel very special indeed.

- Do you think any of her family members could have helped her more?
Yes. She was the baby sister. Her older brothers should have kept a better look out for her since it was her first year, first time away from home and she was bound to be lonely and nervous about her first year at Hogwarts. They took better care of Harry than they did of her.

- Why do you think Ginny got so attached to the book so quickly? Do you think she struggled to make friends in her first year?
See previous answers.

- How do you think Ginny felt when the diary first started talking to her?
I'll bet she was surprised. She probably got drawn in out of curiosity, and after she had been talking to the diary for a while, she might have felt that the diary knew too many of her secrets. She migth have gelt a bit blacmailed or controlled by he diary. She probably knew that what she was doing was rong - or at least, unusual - but she left it for too long to be able to tell anyone about it.
