Come join us in the Magical Archives as we take a look at the twelfth chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
“Your father left this in my possession before he died. It is time it was returned to you. Use it well. A very merry Christmas to you." - Chapter 12, The Sorcerer's Stone

Chapter 12
Christmas is approaching. Malfoy teases Harry about having to stay at Hogwarts for the holiday as he does not have parents. Harry, however, is looking forward to spending Christmas away from the Dursleys, especially because Ron is also staying at Hogwarts. The day before vacation, Hermione tears Ron and Harry away from a conversation with Hagrid to look in the library for more information about Nicolas Flamel. The librarian catches Harry lingering around the restricted-books section of the library and kicks him out.

On Christmas day, Harry and Ron awaken to presents, though Harry’s are fewer. Harry receives candy and a knitted sweater from Ron’s mother. He also receives an invisibility cloak accompanied only by an anonymous note telling him that the cloak once belonged to Harry’s father. That night, after a satisfying Christmas dinner and after Ron has fallen asleep, Harry tries on his invisibility cloak. Unseen, he is able to go to the library’s restricted-books section. But one of the books starts screaming when he opens it, so he quickly leaves. He passes Filch and hides in an old classroom marked with an inscription that includes the word “Erised.” Inside stands an old mirror. Harry looks in the mirror and sees many people standing behind him, but when he turns around in the room, he sees no one. Suddenly, he recognizes that two of the people in the mirror are his dead mother and father. He tries to speak to them, but they can only communicate by waving. Harry lingers there a while but eventually returns to his room.

The next night, Harry brings Ron with him to the mirror room. Ron does not see Harry’s parents in the mirror, but instead sees himself holding a Quidditch cup. Mrs. Norris, Filch’s prowling cat, notices them. On the third night, Ron is afraid of being caught and does not want to go back, so Harry returns alone. There he finds Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore explains to Harry that the mirror displays the deepest desire of whoever looks into it. Harry is relieved to find that Dumbledore is not angry.

Things to Take Away
-When Dumbledore comes upon Harry in the mirror room, the old wizard and the young boy are alone for the first time in the story, conversing privately, and we see a more human side of Dumbledore.
-Harry’s discovery of the Mirror of Erised is important both as plot development and as a revelation of Harry’s own character, as yet again, he entered a room he was not supposed to.

Questions to Get You Started
-Christmas at Hogwarts gave Harry a beautiful invisible cloak. Who did you think gave him the cloak?
-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?

-Christmas at Hogwarts gave Harry a beautiful invisible cloak. Who did you think gave him the cloak?

I was pretty sure from the get go it was Dumbledore.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?

this year in particular it would show my mom and my brother back with us.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?

I would not go back. It would be too painful to see things that could never be.

I can't really remember what I thought the first time that I read it. I guess I didn't think about it that much as a kid.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
I think I would see a time where I was free from stress and able to have more free time to spend doing the things I want to.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I think I would go back so that I could try and find out how to get to that state. I think it should be possible, but at the moment I don't know how.

My first thought was it was from Dumbledore.
-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
I would see my family still alive and being able to spend time with them again. It's hard knowing all your family had died and you are the only one left.
-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I probably would not go back knowing that what I see is just what I wish for. It would be pretty obvious that what you see would not happen. I would NOT be afraid.

Spoiler (highlight below to see it):

Albus Dumbledore

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
I think I would see my mother and father loving me and all of us being happy. My dad loves me but he's rough on the edges- a little more than most. He fights a lot. And my mum- she is horrible. She married the man who repetitively abused me in all ways (including sexually) and invited me to her wedding after I avoided her for two years following my eighteenth birthday because of him. And its not like she didn't know it was happening. Not one phone call or piece of mail until I got a wedding invitation. I wish you could capitalize a period. Because they deserve more emphasis.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I would be afraid to go back. Because when things seem too good to be true they usually are.

-Christmas at Hogwarts gave Harry a beautiful invisible cloak. Who did you think gave him the cloak?

I was really confused at first, as I was 8...lol

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?

I would see myself holding my son in my arms...

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?

I think it would tempt me heavily, but it might become an addiction so I would probably be scared to go back...

Dumbledore of course.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
hmmm, if I looked inside I'd see myself as I was when I was 13.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I'd be excited to go back to see what it was the mirror would show me.

It was a long time ago since I first came across this scene (film first), but if I remember rightly, I thought Professor McGonagall had given him the cloak.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?

At this very moment, probably my parents and all my grandparents alive and well. We'd be having a BBQ in the garden, having a wonderful time in each other's company.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?

I'd want to go back to it, but I would probably use it like looking through photos and only go back to it every now and then.

I had immediately thought of Dumbledore when I saw the cloak, I think it just made the most sense.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
I've thought about this question a lot and I honestly don't know what I'd see. Maybe myself with my psychology licensure. Or myself looking like I did in high school.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I think it depends on what I'd see, but more likely than not, it would be nice things to see, so I'd probably go back.

Oh this sounds so sweet. I think that would be something fun to do. I like that a lot of people have their families involved in their mirrors while I'm like Ron only seeing my own accomplishments. Kinda seems a little messed up now that I think about it.

I think at 11, a child's priorities and cares can tend to be more 'me' oriented than that of an adult (at least broadly speaking), especially if you are in the second youngest in a big family, and often getting overshadowed. I think if Ron looked in the mirror at the end of the series, what he would see would be quite different.

I wasn’t sure but Dumbledore seemed the most likely. I just didn’t understand why he would give it to Harry.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?

I might see myself reunited with loved ones who have died.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?

If I was like Harry and didn’t know much about the magical world I think I would have been curious and wanted to know more about it but at the same time I might have also been a little afraid because I didn’t understand it.

I think Dumbledore gave Harry his cloak. His father must have left it for Dumbledore to care for it.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
I would see all illnesses cured, peace, love, everyone with all the basic needs met, happy and equality

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
If the mirror would cause me some kind of addiction, I wouldn't go back.

Well I figured it was either Dumbledore or McGonagall and of the two most likely Dumbledore as he had been the one in charge of deciding Harry's fate as an infant so would have been the one most likely to have been in charge of all of all of his inheritance as with the vault he had Hagrid take Harry to
-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside? My Mother and brothers who I miss so very much it is like a constant ache
-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why? I think both I would want to go back desperately but I would also know that it would not be good to do that it wasn't real and would only make the pain worse

I would not have thought of McGonagall. Since she had given him the Nimbus 2000, it would be hard fro me to think she would give two gifts like that. (Granted the broom was a lot less expensive and not rare at all.) If she had given the cloak and someone found out all kinds of rumors would be started (favoritism etc)

I too thought of loved ones who have passed. I think it is a very natural yearning, that a lot of us have.

Since the cloak was Harry's father's and meant to be passed down to him anyway, I didn't really see it like that. Plus, I was 11 at the time so I wasn't make the same connections which now seem to obvious to me as an adult.

I thought it was dumbledore. . And what a fitting gift it was something saved for him from someone who loved him, Harry was so surprised that 1st Christmas that they were even gifts for him at all. the 1st Christmas where Harry truly realized there were people who love and care about him

this part always makes me cry.. he was so neglected as a child by his so-called family!

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?gift.
funny as this sounds ...socks ...I truly love warm fuzzy socks they are my absolute favorite

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why? I am truly very content so I think the one time would be enough. I alo there is a fear yjat it could change

I can see someone going back to try and figure out how it works. An eleven-year-old who sees themselves as head boy or captain of the Quidditch team might think they are seeing the future and want to know how to make it happen.

-Christmas at Hogwarts gave Harry a beautiful invisible cloak. Who did you think gave him the cloak?
When I first read it I thought that it was one of the adults at Hogwarts. I was thinking either Dumbledore. McGonagall, or Hagrid, since they seemed to have the most to do with Harry's past. I didn't think McGonagall would approve of the cloak though, so she wasn't at the top of my list.

-The Mirror of Erised! What do you think you would see if you looked inside?
Currently the things I want most are a job with more responsibilities and a car that doesn't have problems. On a bigger scale, I would see myself with my boyfriend and we would be in a house with kids.

-Would you be willing to go back to the Mirror, like Harry, or would you be scared to go back, like Ron? Why?
I wouldn't be scared by it because I would probably be desensitized by items with magical properties, but I probably wouldn't go back. I would be more concerned with figuring out how to get the thing I wanted rather than looking at it.
