Many individual people, and families, have traditions. Traditions that have passed from ancestors. But there are other ways to celebrate your ancestors. But there are other ways to remember your loved ones as well.

This thread is to discuss ways we celebrate our ancestors. Below are some questions to get us started.

Discussion questions

- What are some traditions you have in your family?
- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?
- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?

- All HEX rules apply
- Please be respectful of everyone in the thread
- Main participation in this discussion will go from February 15th, 2020 to March 14th, 2020, but will be left unlocked in the forum for continuous discussion of our loved ones
-Participation before March 14th will earn you a ticket for April's Book of Records.

- What are some traditions you have in your family?
My family really don't have that much by the way of traditions. the closest we have is that we all go to stay with my aunt in the summer and sometimes go away when people have big birthdays.

- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?
It's really not a big thing with my family, we are all fairly focused on the present and the future

- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?
I try to remember them as much as I can, but I don't do anything hugely special. Sometimes certain activities remind me of particular people, like swatting flies reminds me of my Nan, but I don't tend to go out of my way to do them.

My family is very big on passing things down. It doesn’t have to be anything special just something that belonged to a relative that we pass down to the newer generations knowing they will keep it and pass it on one day. I have handmade furniture that my father made me when I was a child (he passed when I was eight) and my children now use it. One piece is a toy bench, it is now in my daughter’s room. We keep pictures around the house to remember each one; grandparents, great grandparents, great aunts etc. We also like to set and extra place at the table and keep its chair empty at holiday meals, even though we may not see them we let them know they are still welcome.

One way I remember my grandmothers are the flowers they had in their yards. I have tried to grow a couple of them, but haven't had much luck yet. I would like to try again though. Another way to remember them is through photos. I don't have any displayed, but I want to set up some sort of collage of family memories.

I think one of the best ways to live my life in tribute to my passed ancestors is to recognize how they impacted me and take those lessons and have the best life I can have. They did their best to help raise me, and I can honor their love by passing on love and kindness to others.

- What are some traditions you have in your family?
... /In our family we honor them in several ways. We work on our geneaology so that we can tie us into each of them who came before and remember their lives in our family tree.
... We put their photos on the mantle at Samhain and tell their stories.
... We scrapbook the pictures of their lives so that those photographs, slides and movies aren't lost through degrading over time.
... If we live close enough we visit their graves and put fresh flowers and leave gifts of food and drink that were their favorites.

- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?
... for me personally, I remember my Mom and Granny through our family recipes. Through songs that we used to sing together. TV shows/movies that we would watch together over and over through the years (such as Wizard of Oz, White Christmas, Holiday Inn).

- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?
... My mother's favorite color is purple. So I did our guest room in a lovely shade of lilac, filled it with her bedroom furniture and did it in a style that any older southern lady would like, including her rocking chair and white silk roses in her favorite Waterford crystal vase, books she loved and pictures of her and daddy and the family to honor her and in hope that she'll drop by for a visit some night. I miss her.

- What are some traditions you have in your family?
I have no family left. We never had any traditions regarding our ancestors. For those that were current family members when they died we would have a funeral service and a meal after the service was over.
- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?
I just find it interesting to know where they came from and any other information I can find about them.( ie were they farmers in Ireland, did they make it to Australia?) My aunt on my father's side did a geneaology. It was detailed and interesting to read. From my mom's side it is almost impossible to track down the information from Russia so I don't know anything about that part of the family...only a little from my German/Lithuanian family
- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?
I just remember the good times we had when they were still alive. Outside of that I don't really do anything.

We used to have traditions. But because of the decline of my father's mental faculties, they have been ruined over the years. now that my mother has passed, I feel like they are all going to go.

- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?

I tend to rely on pictures. I have a lot of family albums and some old family trees.

- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?

Not really. I still pray for them and try to remember all the good times. It is hard some times. I cry a lot for my mom, I suppose tat is a tribute.

- What are some traditions you have in your family?
I grew up in a way that didn't allow for traditions to be passed down. However, with our children we have created a tradition of giving matching pajamas and a book to everyone on Christmas eve.

- What are ways you like to remember your ancestors?
I keep an "ancestor box" with things passed down, given by, or representing my ancestors.

- Do you have certain things that you like to do as a tribute to your passed loved ones?
I have a couple. For the anniversary of my sister's death, I have a drink and play a board game. On the anniversary of our step-father's death, I volunteer at the local VA hospital.
