"“Mistletoe,” said Luna dreamily, pointing at a large clump of white berries placed almost over Harry’s head. He jumped out from under it. “Good thinking,” said Luna seriously. “It’s often infested with nargles.”

- J.K. Rowling, the Order of the Phoenix

Winter is coming closer and the temperatures are dropping. It's the perfect time to just sit back, relax in front of a crackling fire, and read a good book. And what better to read than a beautiful winter story. Jack Frost, The Nutcracker or the Snow Queen, or the story of Gerda and Kai are just a couple of beautiful winter fairytales.

TASK

It`s getting colder so let`s warm our hearts with your favorite winter story. Is it a story from your religion? Something completely unrelated that reminds you of winter? Or do you have a story that is traditionally being told around winter every year? Let´s talk! Maybe you will even discover a new story to read.

Your entry must consist of at least 4 sentences. You must include at least 1 sentence that references one of the posts above yours. The first post you make gives you 1 ticket for the BoR. Any following posts, that fulfill the requirements, will give you a ticket for the discussion prize.

My favorite winter story is A Christmas Carol. In Elementary School, I checked this book out every year. Mine was the only name for seven straight years. I have read it so many times. I've watched every version that has been made. I will watch multiple versions in a row!

Oooh I also love A Christmas Carol @Mama-Philly! I think my favorite holiday story is The Grinch. I just love every single one that's been made. I think the story is truly magical about how he learns the gift of giving. I especially think it's cute that his heart grows ❤ I watch one every year.

@heathermonique005

LOVE the Grinch. The original cartoon is the best though I do enjoy the Jim Carrey version. Didn't see the new cartoon

Like both Mama-Philly and heathermonique005 I love A Christmas Carol and it is most definitely my favourite of all the Charles Dickens novels. As for the story of the Grinch it is OK but not one I would put amongst my favourites, which include the Nutcracker which also happens to be my favourite ballet.

My absolute favourite is a short story called 'The Greatest Gift' that dates back to 1943 and was written and self published by Philip Van Doren Stern. In 1946 it was the basis used for my favourite Christmas Film of all time 'It's A Wonderful Life'. It is part of our pre Christmas tradition as a family to snuggle up on the sofa on a cold December afternoon and watch Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, meet the wonderful Henry Travers in the guise of the angel Clarence Oddbody. No matter how many times I see the film I always cry at the end.

Just remember this festive season that every time you hear a bell ring an angel has just got their wings.

@Rosa Majalis I agree with you, those are both awesome choices! I've never heard of "The Greatest Gift", but it sounds worth investigating.
My personal favorite is the Nutcracker. I love the story line, and how it all progresses. It would be amazing if I could have the same experience as Clara does, visiting a world of magic. If only someone would give me a nutcracker! 😊

@Greta12 - another Christmas tradition of mine is to go and see the Nutcracker performed it is truly beautiful and the music and skill of the dancers make it completely spell binding.

My step daughter bought me two beautiful nutcrackers that stand around 2ft high they stand sentinel either side of my fireplace in the living room every Christmas but they have never as far as I know come to life.😊

@Rosa Majalis That's a lovely tradition of yours! I've never seen it performed, but I've read the story. And you never know, some winter night they might just bring you off somewhere! It could absolutely happen.

Tchaikovski's Nutcracker Suite is indeed one of the great masterpieces of early 20th century music as it emerged from an era of strict classicism, struggling into the modern era of 'popular' music—striving to reach more and more of the common people, with its engaging melodies, and more emotionally accessible, and shorter, tonal arrangements. I never ever tire of hearing it; it's the official sonic backdrop of my Christmas, along with a few other songs that were on my folks' Holiday Playlist when I was a child growing up. I also never fail to see Seattle's big Nutcracker Suite Ballet production—they never disappoint. But I also simply must rewatch, every year, National Lampoon's Chrismas Vacation. It always helps me remember not to put too much emphasis on the successes of all my little holiday plans. I only have to think of the hapless Clark Giswold, who so much wanted the perfect Christmas Vacation for his family. He

Oh my gosh, I watch National Lampoon's Christmas vacation every year! My favorite Christmas memory, or tradition, is to watch our Christmas carols every year snuggled on the couch with my husband and four children. Our youngest watches until she falls asleep and the rest of us watch it all the way through and then go to bed. I love being able to do it with my children every year, it gives me such smiles to watch them all singing carols together as a family!

I love Christmas. I have watched every classic film about Christmas but my favorite of all time is the one with Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. I also like the Jimmy Stewart film, It's a Wonderful life and then there is Miracle on 34th street with a very young Natalie Wood.

Our Christmas when I was young was celebrated in a traditional way. We'd go to bed on Christmas Eve trying to sleep and wake up very early in the morning, run downstairs and go through the presents like lawnmowers on grass. The off to our Grandmother's house for early dinner and then off again to the other Grandma's for a late dinner. By the end of the day we were stuffed!

I enjoyed reading Greenleaf001's tradition of snuggling on the couch with her husband and four children watching Christmas Carols. I had 4 sisters and a brother and Christmas was always such a fun time for us.

@Twigs I would love to see Miracle on 34th Street, I've always wanted to see what that was like. Hopefully it will be on this year so I can have my chance. I always go to family's homes for lunch and dinner on Christmas Day as well!

I personally love watching any Christmas movie, but I have to say that watching Beauty and the Beast is the best for me, I just love when Belle and the Beast are out in the snow together. And I love Frozen, it really reminds me of Winter, regardless of how the snow and ice came about.

My favorite winter movie is, It's a Wonderful Life. Because we all have had that though of what it would've veen like if we would have never been born, but being showed that basically your life is what you make it with your family and friends always warms my heart and keeps my happy durning the holiday season.

@LenaDuchannes234 I haven't actually heard of It's a Wonderful Life but I will research it. I love the movie Elf. It is somewhat cheesy but it is a well made movie that is great to watch with family or by yourself. I recommend it because it isn't just a kids movie, it is good for all ages. His clueless personality is guaranteed to make you laugh. Honestly, I was bored in May and I watched Elf, so it is good at any season. Overall, I love the movie and you should definitely see if it you haven't already.

Its an old movie that has been potraied in such cartoons as The Fairly Odd Parents and other tv shows. And I adored the movie Elf as well its was just funny and heartwarming for the holiday season.

I watched the movie Elf in school! It was a great one! Although my alltime favorites are the grinch or a christmas carol. I didnt get to see the new Grinch last year tho, but my mom and my sister went to see. The Christmas carol made me laugh my head off! Ebenezer Scrooge is so cross but HILARIOUS. What made me laugh the most in there was when the people were greeting him at his office, and he was always like "Good afternoon" 😂. That word "humbug" tho, I had to luck up. Man my english 😊

The Grinch is definitely a favorite for our family. Although it's not really Christmas-related, Frozen reminds me of winter. It did start in the summer, but Elsa turned the whole kingdom into a wintery landscape instead! I actually played the part of Elsa in Frozen Jr. earlier this year, and I did have to sing Let It Go. I also like The Snow Queen, but I have no idea why people think it's so similar to Frozen.

@floofy_kittycat Frozen is based on The Snow Queen. Disney decided to take a different turn at the end, but Elsa's powers came about from the same concept originally. I'm also a huge Frozen fan myself (just saw the sequel and highly recommend it)!

I've never really been one to read Christmas stories, which looking back at it is rather sad. Growing up in a Christian family, we would read the Christmas story from the Bible every Christmas eve in front of the tree, but every other story was told via film... which is why I'm such a sucker for Tim Allen's Santa Clause movies!

@Rosa-Majalis I had NO idea that It's a Wonderful Life was based on a book, and I'm going to HAVE to go find it!! Thank you for the tip!

I'm not even sure if it is still in print I came across it over 40 years ago in a second hand book shop 😉
