AN ARCHIVES' ANTHOLOGY OF BEASTS

Newt Scamander sat on the chair at his desk, carefully sipping his tea while going over the findings in his journal. "No, no, what was I thinking? The flames aren't red, they're blue. Blue flames." He mumbled to himself.

"Are you sure about that?" A small voice came from beside the desk. Newt rolled his eyes and ignored it. "I know a lot about those beasts too. They happen to live inside me after all, you know." After a few small thumps, Newt's trunk came into view around the desk.

Newt turned and looked at the trunk sitting there and sighed. "I've told you about interrupting me while I'm working. I'm not sure how you've managed to talk, but you need to be quiet. You get me into enough trouble as it is." He turned back to his desk to continue reading over his notes.

The trunk thumped a few more times to get closer to Newt. "Maybe you could listen to me, just a little? I could help. Like the flames! They can be both red or blue. I could also accidentally let some creatures loose if you needed the motivation..." The clicking of one of the fasteners of the suitcase could be heard.

Newt looked back down at his trunk, looking exasperated. "Oh alright, alright. No need for that. I don't feel like chasing an Erumpent through Central Park, really, to tell you the truth. Oh, you're bloody right. We need to get this book correct, down to the last detail."

"Where will my name be in the book?" asked Newt's Trunk. How an object with no face could smile did not cross Newt's mind; it was magic after all. He always seemed to see things slightly differently than other wizards.

Newt snorted. "Who would believe that I got my information from a talking trunk?"

As we know, starting in 1918, Newt Scamander traveled all across the world collecting and studying various magical beasts, protecting them from those who would hunt them down and hurt them. He was essential in helping the magical community to understand these creatures, as opposed to assuming they are inherently dangerous and harmful. He kept all of them in his trunk which was enchanted with a Undetectable Extension Charm to allow for several habitats for a variety of magical creatures. Some were harmless, and some were dangerous, but all of them were loved and cared for while in his care.

During Newt's travels, not only did he care for these creatures, but he also studied them and researched their habits and tendencies. He traveled to their natural habitats. He took extensive notes and sketches that eventually transformed into Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Extensive field notes and sketches were had before they were organized into the published book we know today. Newt's notes are some of the most fascinating notes on magical creatures in existence, and we would like to bring that magic to you here in the Archives. With that, we bring you our Beast Registry, which will be a new feature in this forum starting in the month of March. In order to help Newt and his trunk, we as budding Magizoologists must prepare for our upcoming travels and studies!

Without further ado, here are some questions to get our studies started:
• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?

Feel free to expand more on these questions, or add your own to keep the discussion going! Please remember to show respect to one another's opinions and answers, and keep everything within HEX's rules and guidelines. Anyone who participates in this discussion will receive two tickets toward our February raffle for Life After Hogwarts! Please keep in mind that your posts have to contribute to the discussion and not be considered spam to count. You have until February 23rd at 11:59PM HEX time to contribute to this discussion!

Participation in this event will count towards March's Book of Records.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
I think he was a stern but loving friend/owner to them, if that makes sense, lol

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
Definitely the Thunderbird and the other birds.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
No, I think he was braver than I am. And I am a bit of a homebody.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think he took extensive and thorough notes about creature, habitats, feeding, and personality characteristics, not to mention extensive physical descriptions. I also think he read all the pre-existing information that he could find before he went and found new creatures.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?

No. Like I said I am a homebody and I have some vision issues which are not conducive to being around some animals.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?

I think it was one of respect and awe. Newt didn't treat the creatures as pets, nor did he think of them as creatures he wanted to cuddle. He treated them as wild animals and ones that should not have too much human interaction, in order that they did not become domesticated. There were a few exceptions, mainly in the form of Pickett, who unusually for a Bowtruckle did not attack humans, but treated Newt with great affection.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?

I would like to know more about any of the beasts that we have had mention of or seen a little glimpse of, but have not really learnt much about in terms of their habits and personalities. An example would be the Graphorn.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?

As someone who likes writing, I think writing a book on a subject you are passionate about would be great. It would combine two loves, so it is something I would consider. I wouldn't have gone to the sorts of lengths Newt did, however.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?

I think he would have drawn lots of sketches, and labelled the different parts of the beasts. He would then make shorthand notes while observing them, such as their habitat, diet, and temperament, which he would later expand.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?

I think being a Magizoologist would be a wonderful job because I love animals and love to learn about them. However, I don't like travelling and I'm very risk averse, so if it is something I would have ultimately chosen as a career path, I'm not sure.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
I think Newt had such a difficult time relating to other humans, that for him animals represented true friends, because they accepted him without reservations.
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I would love to learn more about occamies and hippocampuses.
• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
I don't think so, because even though I complain a lot about humanity, at the end of the day, I do enjoy people and nice conversations.
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think mostly he observed their lives, their habitats and how they interacted with other creatures, as well as habits such as eating, hunting, sleeping, nesting, breeding etc.
I can also imagine he would have taken sketches and drawings of what he observed.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I love animals and loved to study biology relted to animals also in school...though I wans't very good at it! I love the idea of studying and taking care of magical creatures, especially as I would want to try and combine it with experiments on wand making, as I am sure there are many cores that can yet be discovered with magical properties.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
A good realationship. He cared for them and was maybe something like a friend/ family member for them, because I'm sure, Newt loves this creatures and so probably also the creatures like him.
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
The Phoenix or Snidgets. The Phoenix because it's a very interesting creature and the Snidget because there is not a lot known about it. (House-elfs are also magical beasts, right? I would also love to learn more about house-elfs, because they are my favourite creatures.)
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think, he made sketches and notes about the animal's behaviors, outer appearances, characteristics, while watching them. Maybe he also read books about already known creatures, but I think the most information he got through watching the beasts.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I think not, because I think magical beasts are interesting but not so, that I would like to deal with them as a job.

I think Newt was good at treating his creatures as wild animals instead of pets. He ended up releasing a lot of them, and even if he didn’t they had habitats very close to what they would have in the wild. Becoming a Magizoologist would be amazing, and would definitely be my number one choice of magical job. Learning about magical creatures would be interesting, as there are so many creatures, and always more to discover about them.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
I think he had a caring relationship. He didn't see himself as their master, but rather their caretaker.
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
Pygmy Puffs!
• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
Most likely. I think discovering new creatures is amazing!
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think he kept a diary with scribbles of notes on each creature. I think the best research he did was just observing and noting.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I do! I think it would be fantastic!

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
definitely one of friendship and kinship. He admitted himself that he understood creatures more than humans (and I completely get him on that)
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
mooncalfs - they are soooooo cute
• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
No, as magical beings as interesting as they are are not my first matter of interest.
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I am sure he made breeding experiments along with the obligatory descriping statistics: Their appearance, their lifespan, their average height, differences between the sexes etc.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
It might be an interesting career but I have my mind set on another one. So I don't really fancy becoming a Magizoologist

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?

I believe that he shared a great deal of respect for all his creatures and of course cared dearly for them. However, i don't believe he saw himself as their master also i feel like he didn't pamper them treating them like domesticated pets but like the wild animals, they are still loving each and everyone.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?

I would love to learn more about each and everyone there is no creature i could favour because i love animals and would need to know everything about all of them.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?

Most definatly as some one who adores all animals his life is like a dream to me plus i am also in love with writing so to combine the two would be just perfect for me.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think

he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I feel Newt would have notted down about everything he noticed from simple things like their appearance to how their emotions effected their mood.I believe hew would of draw many diagrams of each creature so he knew everything he could.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?

Of course like I've said I love all animals so much and hold a desire to care and learn acout just every single one I could possibly find.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
He had a real fascination with the magical creatures and a huge heart. He took care of them and wanted their best outcome and to be protected

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about? Probably one of the smaller ones like the bowtruckle. But the thunderbird is really interesting!

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could? I wonder if I am that brave. Maybe when I was much younger I would have.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures? He took extensive notes and major research on these beasts and he was very clever.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not? No, I would be at St Mungo's taking care of the patients. But a field trip now and then would be wonderful!

What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
It was a close relationship. He cared for every single one of them as if they were his family. He was protective and caring.

What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I'd like to learn more about the Occamy. It looks like a really interesting creature.

Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
Hm, that's difficult. Yes and no. I think magical creatures are really interesting and I'd love working with them / learn more about them. But it's also a very lonely task.

What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think he wrote down his observations in a sort of diary maybe. He would write down everything he notices: normal and unusual behavior, how they react in certain situations, what they eat, how they communicate. Things likat that.

Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I could see myself becoming a Magizoologist. I like animals and I'm curious about all the things related to them. And in some ways animals are easier to handle than humans.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
Newt cares a great deal about the creatures in his trunk. He takes the time to research about each individual one to make sure he can give them the best care he possibly can. I think the creatures know that and give him respect back, even the niffler to some extent.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I would love to know more about bowtruckles. They are so cute and delicate, yet tough at the same time. They are strange little things.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
Yes! I love animals and if I could travel around the world researching and saving them from extinction I wouldn't hesitate.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think a lot of his notes would have been taken through observation. A lot of it will have been trial and error because no one had taken the time to find out about magical creatures before. He would jot down what they liked to eat and what environment they prefer to live in. Also if they like to be left alone or if they like company. He would also have had to find out what would heal them if they became sick. He must have been very clever.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I think I would be suited to a job as a Magizoologist. I enjoy finding out about the things I'm interested in, which includes magical creatures. I'm also a good caregiver and think that skill would extend to creatures well.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?

Newt definitely had a loving and nurturing relationship with the creatures in his trunk. He cared for them better than many people care for their animals.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?

I love the fwooper! And Thunderbird. I'd love to know more about them.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?

I think so yes.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?

I could see him studying their habitat's, food habits, sleeping and socializing habits. There's so much to learn about any creature, and magical ones are no different!

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
I'd love to! Animals are fascinating

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
It was positve and loving. He cared for them and provided a home and shelter from people who would abuse them or use them for their personal gain.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I would like to know more about the Niffler! He seems like a really interesting animal. Are there more and where do they live? How much loot can his pouch hold?

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
I would have like to be a Magizoologist. It just the coolest career. Your outdoors learning about animals and their habitat. Educating your fellow wizards and witches about the value of saving these creatures.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
He wrote about their homes, care, birth, mating , prey and food.
Newt would have set up a tent and observed the creatures from a safe distance. He would have learned how to approach them and how care for them. He would duplicate the home environment for them so they could continue to thrive in his protective care.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
Definitely! I would want to be one and learn more about the fantastical beasts!

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
I think he had a very close relationship with the creatures in his trunk. He cared for them as if they were his children.
• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I would like to learn more about Unicorns and crups.
• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
I don't think so. I probably would have become a Healer.
• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think he probably had very in-depth notes. He probably tried to take notes primarily by observing while disturbing the creatures as little as possible.
• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
It would be interesting but I would be more likely to become a Healer. I don't think I would be interested in facing the more dangerous creatures.

• What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk? I think Newt had a fatherly love kind of relationship with the creatures in his trunk because ever since he found them, he kind of loves them as he raises them and help nurture them and I bet that he's going to be sad that they will have to leave him.

• What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
I would personally like to learn more about either the Demiguise or the Thunderbird because I like how the Demiguise can see the instant future and I like how it's fur is white and it looks like a monkey somewhat and the Thunderbird can make storms as it flies and I think it's amazing because it helps Arizona have some rains, mainly water.

• Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
Maybe, because I don't really go out much into nature because I get afraid of having bugs in my hair, but if the magical creatures were very interesting, I would totally go out and explore more creatures in this world and learn about them as I do like learning a bit.

• What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
I think Newt took notes on how each creature acted whenever a human came upon them, like do they see them as a threat or a friend. He would also note what they eat and what magical properties they have, too. By research, I guess he used their magical properties and see if it would anyway help the wizarding world.

• Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
Maybe, because in the other question, I don't fancy having stuff crawling around my hair, but the creatures are really interesting and it'll be fun to explore and meet them in person.

What type of relationship do you think Newt had with the creatures in his trunk?
I believe Newt would have had a respectful, humane relationship with his creatures. He would have applied all his knowledge about them to communicate and he would have achieved a higher understanding connection with them.

What kinds of beasts would you personally like to know more about?
There are too many for me to choose. I’m a passionate animal lover and spend some of my spare time researching all kinds of animals

Would you have gone down the same path Newt did if you could?
I probably would do it, if only I had the money to do it.

What sort of notes do you think Newt had during his travels? What sort of research do you think he did to learn more about magical creatures?
Habitat, breeding, measurements, social behaviour, colour, and anything else he would have thought to be interesting

Do you fancy becoming a Magizoologist? Why or why not?
Yes, it would be a never ending journey of discovering and learning
