It’s that time of year. Christmas! Hogwarts is always bustling with decorations, trees and gifts, you name it! This year through each student is able to add their own special twist to getting the castle ready for the holidays. Be it a tree, a wreath or maybe even some baked goods. But, that isn’t all. Hogwarts Castle has some special visitors coming to help with the decorations.Who could it be you ask? Well none other than Santa Clause’s Elves, and a reindeer or two. Santa himself will also be at the castle along with Mrs. Clause.

Don’t forget their milk and cookies!

Eko Hale ran out of the common room, eager to help adorn the castle. He saw the announcement that had gone up, "Decorations Wanted" catching his eye. Maybe I should avoid making things move this time, he thought, remembering the snake incident...

He wanted to make a positive impact, not to do good, necessarily, but because he felt it would get him noticed. He couldn't mess up this time.

With a look of determination, which for Eko meant his tongue sticking out of the right side of his mouth, he got to work. He pointed at an empty wall and called out "Flos". To his delight, flowers started springing up against the stone, but, something was wrong. He had stopped the spell, but flowers kept appearing, filling every inch of the wall before him.

Ariya Lin sat cozily in front of the Slytherin common room fireplace, staring helplessly down at a pile of yarn balls. She knew that the old woman who had last fostered her didn't know how to knit, but that didn't mean that Ariya herself did either (unless finger knitting counted). To be honest, she had no idea how to even use the yarn. The black-haired girl glanced around the room for inspiration. A cat toy for Waimarie? Too difficult. A pillow? Also too difficult. Finally, Ariya's eyes landed on a banner strung across a wall, heralding, "Merry Christmas!" She frowned, thinking. If she could finger knit streamers, she could hang them around the castle and spread some color. Picking up the dark green and red balls of yarn, she began to weave them through her fingers.

Around half an hour later, the cobalt-eyed girl ducked out of her common room, heading for the Great Hall. On her way, she spotted... flowers, growing on the walls. But they weren't stationary - they were growing at an alarmingly quick rate. Ariya peered around the corner, to find a boy staring at the flowers, wand hand lowered slightly. "Diffindo." Ariya flicked her wand in the direction of the flowers. A few fell off the wall, but they just kept growing. "Um... mind if I ask what happened?" Ariya asked, sounding slightly panicked.

Eko's eyes went wide as he saw a fellow Slytherin come upon his disaster. Question, yes. She asked a question. Shoot. What was it? He thought for a couple seconds and realized she asked what had happened.

He felt his heartbeat racing, he was going to in trouble, he knew it. He tried to downplay it the best he could. "Oh, nothing major. Just a flower conjuring charm. It seems I was a bit, um, enthusiastic though." He looked down at his feet, refusing to meet her eyes.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "I, um, wonder if it's because" he paused, "I made up the charm." He raised his eyes a tad, hoping to see the girls expression - he wanted to know if he was going to sent to the Headmasters office for causing a scene.

Ariya gawked silently, impressed. "You made up a charm by yourself? Merlin, that's... cool." She commented fnally, brushing fruitlessly at the flowers still creeping quickly across the wall. The cobalt-eyed girl cast another Diffindo spell, but the flowers only grew back more.

"I... don't really know how to fix this, honestly." Ariya confessed, looking slightly cowed. "If you can invent the charm, maybe you can make a countercharm? I'm not sure, I don't really know that much about unknown spells., and I'm pretty sure the staff don't want me accidentally setting the school on fire." She continued swiping down at the curling tendrils, trying to stave off their growth until someone qualified to deal with something like this arrived.

Eyes cast downward, Eko nodded. "I tend to look at a spell I know exists and change part of it to make it work for what I want to do." He pointed to the wall of flowers. "I wanted to make flowers appear, so I took the spell for conjuring birds, changed the root word from bird to flower, and flowers started blooming."

He sighed, annoyed that he was great at coming up with spells, but they always ended up terribly. "I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. It tends to happen this way... It looks like it's going to work, but something goes wrong..."

He paused and starting thinking of a way to get the flowers to stop growing... it wouldn't stop it, but maybe he could vanish it?

"Evanesco" he screamed, wand pointed at the wall.

"That's a good idea! I never thought of that." Ariya commented. "Maybe altering the wand movements might help? I never pay a terrible lot of attention in Charms though, so I might not be of much help." She added sheepishly.

The black-haired girl snatched her hand back from the flowers as if they had grown thorns; the heart of where the flowers lay the thickest vanished, and the spell's effect leapt down the vines, the flowers fading faster than they were growing. Ariya watched, absorbed in how satisfying the disappearing was.

When the wall was clear of the overgrown blossoms, Ariya turned to Eko. "Well... you solved that well on your own, I honestly can't believe I didn't think of that." She said ruefully.

Kaitlyn was slumped over in her chair, crying over her last breakup. That darned, good for nothing John Kruger! "It's the holiday season, and what am I doing? Crying over a stupid boy!" She muttered aloud. "I'm done!" She stood up, and stormed out of the common room, first years horrified at her disheveled appearance.

"What are you looking at?" She snapped. She knew perfectly well that her mascara was running, and her eyes were red, and that her face was streaked with tears, but she wasn't about to let anyone point that out to her.

Kaitlyn walked briskly out of the common room, and as she did, a poster caught her eye. "DECORATIONS WANTED." Should I help? She wondered. Whenever I made a mistake, John would always yell at me...I'm afraid.... She stared down the stairwell, and into the Great Hall, watching two Slytherins laugh and have fun over their decorations.

What if I was in that group? She wondered.

The uncomfortably familiar sensation of eyes on her back made Ariya turn around hesitatingly, half-ready for an onslaught of silent judgement for being so bold as to socialize with another human being for once.

The black-haired girl's eyes fell on another girl, a Ravenclaw looking slightly disheveled with a tear-streaked face and reddened eyes. Immediately, her mind tunneled involuntarily to analyzing what might have gone wrong. She was wearing makeup, and is crying. Stereotype or not for me to think so, I'm pretty sure I know what that means.

Ariya felt a pang of understanding overtake her. She obviously couldn't relate, as she'd never dated anyone, but she'd just left plenty of friends who had and witnessed them after they'd broken up. The cobalt-eyed girl gave the Ravenclaw girl a tiny wave. "Come, have you got any ideas? I just witnessed this guy create and fix his own charm, darn that you missed that. That was a sight to see." She called down the hall, gesturing to the boy she was talking to. She turned to the other Slytherin awkwardly. "I don't think I caught your name?"

Kaitlyn looked down, embarrassed to be caught staring . Should I go down? She wondered, and all of a sudden she realized that she must've looked like a crazy plotting her next murder. "Tergeo" She muttered and the mascara trail was gone. This will have to do for now. She walked down the stairs, come on Kaitlyn, say something..!

"That sounds amazing!" She smiled, her hazel eyes twinkling. "What charm was i-?" Kaitlyn had just reached the Great Hall where they were standing when a loud cough interupted her.

"Just spendin' all o yer time chit chatting aren't you folks?" She looked down to see an elf glare at the three. "Santa has letters to read, gifts to send, and what are you three doing when yer supposed to be helpin' out? Chit chatting! Want to be put on the naughty list this year?" Kaitlyn groaned. First she got dumped, now this? You have got to be kidding me.

Running a tanned hand through his raven locks, Jasper stood up and made his way towards a fellow Ravenclaw who was clearly upset. “Hey there,” he said softly. “Kaitlyn, isn’t it?” As gently as he could, he placed a hand on the girl’s back and smiled. She was one of the few he felt comfortable sharing his true identity with. “Want to help me with my decorations?”

Not one to usually get involved with these activities, the young man wanted to be more social now that he was in his seventh year. Withdrawn for years, Jasper hoped Kaitlyn would agree. He really was trying to be better and wanted her to share this time with him.

Kaitlyn grabbed a chunk of decor from a nearby box, afraid to be put on this dreadful naughty list. She then felt a hand on her back, and a warm voice. A male stood before her, asking her to help decorate.

"Of course!" She replied, flustered. "You're... Jasper?" Kaitlyn knew him vaguely, he was a friend of a friend. For a second, she stared, lost in the cuts on his face, before gently chiding herself not to stare. "I'm not that great, but I'll try my best."

She picked up a roll of ribbon tangled in a box, and tried to think of spell that would untangle it. "Persolvo!" The ribbons wrapped around her arms and began to tighten. Ok scratch that, she was horrible at decorating.

She smiled awkwardly at Jasper.

Nodding at the other’s words, Jasper smiled softly. “That’s right,” he muttered before watching her with a roll of ribbon. “Here,” he said as he took his wand out. Relashio, he thought without a moment’s hesitation. Watching the material unwrap from Kaitlyn’s arms, the werewolf nodded. He hadn’t missed the curious glance at the scars, but he was too used to that now to let it bother him.

He held up a small wood carving. It looked like a small wolf howling at the moon, but it didn’t seem quite right. “What do you think? I’m hoping to make a few different carvings to go on a small wreath.”

Ria was filled with Christmas delight as she read the notice in the Entrance Hall . “We can make Christmas decorations!” And she danced on the spot, not caring if anyone was looking. Breezing into the Great Hall, the dark eyed Ravenclaw saw that many of the students had already started on theirs, “oh! Slow coach, again,” she admonished herself as she settled at the long table and took the food and drink as it appeared, and thought for a moment of what she wanted to make. “I know!” Ria exclaimed, “a Christmas Wreath!” She conjured up the foliage and baubles and bits of foam, wire and glue, “this is going to be fantastic!”

Isabelle stared at the poster thoughtfully. She loved Christmas and making decorations at her muggle school, but no-one had ever wanted to help her. Maybe it would be different this year. Sitting down at the Hufflepuff table she conjured up lots of different coloured paper to get started on her tradition of making paper chain to decorate the room. As she started cutting the paper into short strip she thought of more things she could do when she was finished. Sweets of all varieties, along with marshmallows and chocolate popped up on the table beside her as she worked. She couldn't help it if she had a sweet tooth, besides she was hungry. "If only there was some music playing, " she thought, "It would made the mood lighter, instead of this uncomfortable silence." However, she was too scared to cast the charm herself so she let it be.

Ria concentrated very hard on her task, just looking up as more people entered the Hall, excitement radiating from them and infecting the room with a Christmas spirit. Spying a Hufflepuff student she knew by sight, she saw her conjuring up sweets and candies of all varieties, struck by the fantastic idea, Ria called out. “Hey, there! Erm, Isabelle! I love your candy theme idea! Mind if I borrow it?” Not waiting for a reply, the industrious Ravenclaw was suddenly surrounded by brightly colored candy. “I’ll add these to my Christmas Wreath, and maybe I’ll make some ribbon decorations with sweets attached!” Catching the undercurrent of students humming, she joined in with the rising crescendo of, “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful.”

As he continued to carve the perfect wolf, Jasper couldn’t help but wince at the sound of Oh, Come All Ye Faithful reverberating around the room. With only a few days until the full moon, the young man’s hearing was heightened. It wasn’t that he hated the singing or joyful mood; it was just too much for his ears to handle. “Why did I choose to get involved?” he muttered under his breath, regretting his decision.

Moving himself over towards Ria, he nodded towards her decoration. “That’s beautiful,” he said, his facial scars glinting in the soft lighting. “Are you looking forward to the holidays?” Reaching out, he gently tied his wolf to one of the ribbons. “I hope you don’t mind.”

Ria was startled out of her reverie by the approaching boy, Ria knew Jasper from her Common room, she was wary of the Wolf Clan, but his polite questions and demeanour made her relax. “Thank you, that’s kind of you to say, my mum showed me how to make these.” Watching as the raven haired teen attached his carved wolf to one of the ribbon decorations, Ria nodded her approval. “That looks really good, Jasper, do you have anymore of them?” Ria couldn’t help but notice the scars, and tried not to stare, but she knew she was making him feel uncomfortable. “I’m sorry for staring, it’s just I have scars too, I have eczema, and I scratched myself to death as a child, leaving marks on my arms and legs.” Hoping the words would help the awkwardness disappear between them, Ria smiled and held up her Christmas Wreath for Jasper’s approval.

Isabelle smiled, it seemed like the other students liked Christmas carols just as much as she did because people were humming and singing together. She joined in softly under her breath as she grabbed another handful of marshmallows to chew on. Grabbing her glue she started to make the rings of paper, and quickly formed a long chain. Once she was happy with it she floated it up to wrap around one of the twelve large trees that stood in the great hall. She overheard a conversation behind and was pleased to hear that she had inspired someone else with her sweet tooth. As the conversation continued she remembered learning how to make fabric stocking fillers out of scraps, and resolved to make those next.

Panting and out of breath, Maddy skidded into the Great Hall where the others were working on their decorations. "Sorry if I'm late," she called out. "I only just saw the poster. I'd like to help with the decorations though, if that's alright?"
Glancing around the room and seeing others still working on creating their own decorations, she sighed in relief. Looks like there’s still time after all. She picked a seat near some Ravenclaws she thought she recognised vaguely, and got straight to work. She’d decided to go with making origami decorations, so she pulled some brightly patterned sheets of paper over to begin folding a paper crane.
Maddy happily joined in the humming of Christmas Carols as she worked, idly thinking that she ought to enchant the decorations once she’d finished with them. Maybe it would be cool if she spelled them with colour-changing charms, or animated them to fly? There were so many possibilities!
