“Now, listen up, Robert. What I’m about to tell you is a tale many before you have lived through, one that has been passed through the generations of this very maple tree,” the wise Barry began, shaking his blade as he prepares to tell the tale.

The other leaves around them listened intently, for they too would be hearing the tale for the first time.

Once Barry noticed all the leaves around him were listening, he began. “As you may have noticed, your brethren before you are starting to turn different colors than our usual green. This can only mean one thing: Autumn is quickly approaching, and we must prepare!”

Robert, feeling water begin to form as he sweat nervously listening to the tale, pondered what this could mean. “Prepare? How can we prepare? And what is Autumn?”

“That, my dear Robert, is the age-old question! What lies beyond this tree? Where do we go when we inevitably leave this very spot? We can prepare by bracing ourselves for the great beyond!” Barry proclaimed, in the most booming voice he could muster.

Suddenly, Robert couldn’t help but feel anxious at the words. The great… beyond? No one ever told us there was anything besides this tree! Where do we even begin preparing for something like that?!

TASK

Have you ever wondered what the life of a leaf would be like? In this month’s open roleplay, you get the opportunity not only to learn just that, but also to live it! Come join the RPC TC’s maple tree while you get to roleplay as a leaf living on it. For the purpose of this task, the scene will be set in early Autumn, as the leaves prepare to fall. You may humanize the leaf by assuming it can talk, move, and think at will. Should the roleplay progress to the leaf falling off the tree, you can assume that it lives once it does and decide its fate.

RULES

1. All HEX and RPC Teaching Center rules apply.
2. This is an open roleplay thread. You are to stay on topic and respond to one of the previous two posts before you.
3. All work must be your own.
4. To qualify for a prize, you must post at least twice in this roleplay thread. Each post must be at least a minimum of five sentences (approximately one paragraph). As this is a beginner roleplay, please do not post excessively long posts (more than seven paragraphs of five sentences each). Shorter paragraphs of dialogue do not count towards the paragraph limit.
5.You must wait for someone to respond before making another post; double-posts will not count towards your two post minimum.
6. You will be given 1 ticket for prizes, so long as you post at least twice, following the rules above. You may earn one bonus ticket if you respond to one of the twists posted throughout the month.
7. Winners will be randomized.
8. You have until September 30th, 2019 at 11:59pm to respond to the roleplay.
9. If you have any questions, please feel free to owl Katie.

Craig the leaf inhaled deeply and tasted the robust earthy musk that he was familiar with. It was actually the only thing he could taste--or was it smell?--any day, but this didn't bother him. A cold breeze shivered him, and he blinked his eyes towards the distance. He screamed. "Ah! Ah! Did you guys see that?" he asked. The morning was a terrible time for panicking. "The tall oak over there just had a leaf fall!"

Logan heaved a heavy sigh as he glanced down at the ground. The earthy musk that his brother, Craig, had just smelled reached him. “I’m higher than you!!” he taunted, as he looked across the road. He loved teasing the others about how high up in the trees he was. As the wind suddenly took hold, he noticed a bug creeping onto his leaf. In one swell munch, the caterpillar had taken a bite out of him.

“Craig!” he yelled, fear lacing his voice. “I have no time to morn another leaf from over there when I’m about to be eaten! What do I do? I don’t want to die. Help!”

Leafy veins shivering with fright, Craig almost couldn't peel his attention away from the oak tree. Luckily Logan always distracted the leaf from his many troublesome worries. "Yeah, yeah. I know you are." It didn't make him mad that his brother was higher; Craig just wished he could be higher too.

Craig glanced up when hearing his name and saw the very hungry caterpillar. It was a dastardly foe. "Nooooo!" he cried out. "Leaf Logan alone, you vile creature!" Veins throbbing as he panicked, a thought clicked in his mind. "Shake him off, Logan! Stick it to him!"

Logan had always been a dramatic leaf. He was determined to be the most dramatic leaf around. “No, no. Vile creature. Off. Get off!” With his brother’s encouragement, he began to shake, helped by the cool breeze that was flowing through his leafy veins. “Shake, shake, shake.” Suddenly, the caterpillar’s feet lost traction and it was soon flying off the leaf.

With a splat, the creature hit the trunk and flopped to the ground. “Ha! Take that! That showed you, didn’t it?” Logan teased. “I did it, Craig. I’m caterpillar free!”

Sarah was just minding her own business down on the very bottom branch of the tree when a caterpillar went sailing past, startling her out of her reverie. She looked up to where Logan was cheering up above. "Hey, up at the top there! Stop throwing leaf-eaters at us. Just because we are down the bottom does not mean we don't matter."

Scowling ferociously, she quietened down and started muttering to herself about the terrible manners of the top-folk. There was nothing wrong with being a bottom leaf, but sometimes she did feel mighty disrespected.

From the safety of her own tree, she watched the others in her sister tree. That tree was always a little nutty; and noisy. She could never get any rest as the loud leaves flung leaf-eaters at those on the lower branches. She was happy to belong to this tree, and not that one. It was one of the older trees in the orchard, but older meant more peaceful companions.

"I feel bad for you, truly," she attempted to call out to the one being attacked with leaf-eaters. "If I could, I would let you move into my tree." She was positioned near the bottom of her own tree, and near directly across from Sarah. Sarah should be able to have heard her, if she was paying even the slightest bit of attention to her surroundings.

Mandy heard the leaf from the next door tree, and nodded in agreement, pesky leaf eaters were always a problem at this time of year, fattening themselves up for the coming of Autumn and Winter. Mandy shivered at the very thought of the off dropping off the twig season. ”‘Tis an omen of summers end, that’s for sure!” Mandy prophesied, and fell a chill wind rustle through her home.

Kristen gazed out towards the neighboring tree as a fellow leaf was taken into the breeze. Oh, what I wouldn't give to dance on the wind like that... she thought with a sigh.

She had heard rumors of such an adventure ever since she was born a few months ago. Unlike like the other buddlings, Kristen has always found the stories of "the falling" exciting, not terrifying. With a slight shiver from the breeze she found herself wiggling, hoping to free herself from this branch and take off on her own.

"One day... one day it'll be my time," Kristen stated to no one in particular.

She chuckles as she overheard the little leaf talking to herself about the great fall. Everyone knew what happened when you fell. You land below somewhere, and if you're lucky a small human picks you up and presses you in between the pages of your deceased cousins. If you weren't lucky, there would come either a day of great blowing or another small human will come with a stick that had multiple pointers and scoop you up in a bag. She trembled slightly from the wind, and wanted desperately to have hands to hold onto the tree with.

"You know nothing of the great fall, young one," she called.

((hahaha in between your dead cousins hahahaha))

Kristen sighed. She would never belong. Others focused on the dangers. Sure, there was a lot of risk. But, oh! To soar like one of the feathering beings that sometimes came to visit her. They came every morning to sing of their adventures. Perhaps, just maybe, she could have one of those adventures, too?

"I may not know much of the great fall..." she began, unsure of how to express her dreams, "but it has to be better than sitting here all day watching other beings live!" A small bout of sap leaked from her branch as she thought of everything she would never get the chance to experience.

"Neither do you!" Violet spoke up from the noisy tree. She had to agree with Sarah; the bottom leaves were always being mistreated. Violet had nearly been eaten by an insect before thanks to one of the proud top leaves thinking it would be a good idea to attack her.
Violet herself was not ready for the great fall, but she wasn't scared either. Sure, she was sad to leave her tree. But maybe she'd find a new place that was just as good, or even better, than where she was now. And as much as she hated them sometimes, she was going to miss those top leaves throwing leaf-eaters down at her.
She shook a little in the breeze, and wondered about the fall some more. "What will my fate be?" she asked herself aloud.

Mandy listened to them chatting, as the day began to take shape, with visitors, and dogs, scaring everyone with their noise and sniffing, squirrels running up and down looking for winter stores. ”You don’t know what living is!” She scoffed. ”Being here amongst us all is living, I’m telling you, you’ll miss it when it’s time.” Mandy shook to frighten the others on her branch into paying attention to her sage words of what was to come.

Christy listened to the other leaves chatter with a chill in her heart. As she was from a newer branch she was much smaller than they were and they intimidated her. The one good thing she did know however was that they were likely to fall before she did. She was still clinging onto the green of summer, with only her tips turning a slight mustard yellow. The others were almost as brown as the trunk that gave them life.

She shook herself but probably not enough for many to notice her. In a timid voice she called up "What happens to you if you never fall?" That thought had been racing through her mind since early budding and it scared her more than knowing what happened down there.

Violet scornfully shook herself to get Mandy's attention. How rude, for a bottom leaf like herself to say such things, and to be so negative about the outcome of the great fall!
"How dare you!" she shouted. "We all have the same knowledge of living as you do! But that does not mean we all have to dread the Great Fall." She paused, mostly for dramatic effect. "I may not know what my fate will be... and I'm sure you don't either. But I do know that there's a greater life beyond this tree, if only we could look for it."
(My posts keep getting put in the wrong place in the thread... I don't know why though, does anyone happen to know why?)

Leaves from all over the grove were discussing the Great Fall, that rumoured time when all leaves would descend to the grass below. It was not somthing that Sarah was overly interested in discussing, but Christy seemed so worried that she had to call over to the young leaf.

"Everyone falls, little one. Even though we may not know what happens once we do, it is known that everyone will eventually descend. You just need to let go. Let yourself turn brown, and be carried down by that ever-present downwards tug." To drive her point home she gave a little shiver, and her connection to the branch weakened. It was almost her time.

The tree was abuzz with chatter, all of the branches turning to watch leaves falling from the tall Oak. Mika didn't much care for all the noise and chatter, but she listened eagerly, desperate to know what life after fall was really like. Some of the leaves must have lived a thousand lives to have the knowledge they were passing on to the younger leaves.

Mika had never experienced a fall before and had to hide her shock as she watched leaves from the Oak flutter to the floor. She wondered what it must feel like to lose the connection with the tree. Before she could stop herself, she found her voice joining in amongst the others, "Wise leaves, what is the flight to the ground like?"

Scarlet was one of the tops leaves of the tree, she had seen all her friends fall down and she was one of the few left on her branch. She heard the ones below discuss the big fall, but she knew that some of them would stay up the tree way longer than all the others. Some just didn't let go, either by fear or sentimental to the tree the were on this year. She over heard Mika asking about the fall, clearly it was his first. '' it's nothing special. You just go down very slowly and if you're in luck, you'll end up next to your friends, but sometimes you end up between all new leaves and some of the neighborhood trees.'' she shouted to him. Scarlet was a leaf that had turned red, which is one of the reasons she called herself Scarlet.

Mika was glad that he heard the response from above him. He wondered whether he would enjoy floating. He didn't really have any friends amongst the leaves, so he would probably enjoy landing wherever and listening to the new stories around him. "How do I let get?" he asked, shaking his dark green body to no avail. He wanted to fly now. He wanted to see what new places he would find as he floated down to the ground. What would the ground feel like? It was so exciting.

Scarlet listened and it was obvious to her that Mika was still a green leaf. Why didn't he change colour yet? ''you need to start letting go of the tree. Stop accepting his food and water and become a being yourself. Once that happens, you'll change colour. As long as you're green, you'll never be able to get down there.'' she said and sighted. She never understood why leaves kept accepting the free food from the tree. Then you'll need to make a seal between you and the tree and once that's done, you'll fall.'" she said. ''You need to let go the bound.''
