My sons are in their late 20's. They went to 2 different elementary schools. Neither had computers. Their high school did in the library & also in one classroom where they taught how to use a computer. Most kids already knew.

I agree that schools will not become obsolete. However, books in schools will be. I think issuing students tablets or laptops will be the norm. It could be an issue if parents can't afford internet at home

My perspective is as an adult and middle school teaching assistant.

How different was your school experience when you attended, and was your time at school with limited technology or full access?
Laptops were just starting to become accessible when I was in high school. I honestly don't remember if there was an actual ban on using them in class, but I don't recall ever taking notes on the computer until at least my junior year. I have always felt that I am way more focused if I am writing notes on paper than if I am typing them.

Did you attend higher education as an adult, how was your experience with mobile devices and internet access?
In college I probably took half of my notes on paper and half on the computer. I absolutely found using the laptop to be distracting, even when I really was trying to pay attention to class. Once your texts could go to your computer, I found myself texting in class because it was easy to do so. While I could take notes faster by typing, I felt like I didn't retain the information as well.

Should electronic devices be utilized to facilitate learning by schools instead of traditional learning materials?
I think there needs to be a balance. In the school I work at, each kid is given a chromebook starting in 5th grade. I think this is way too young to be giving kids internet access. While many sites are blocked, it is impossible to block everything, and there are constantly incidents of kids looking up inappropriate things. When kids are allowed to take notes in class, I find that they constantly abuse this privilege by surfing the web or messaging each other during class. I will say that there are still benefits. Having access to online textbooks means that less paper is used and kids don't have to carry heavy books everywhere. It is also easier to do research projects and find out information quickly. Laptop use just needs to be very carefully monitored.

New technology is becoming more sophisticated all the time, do you envisage a time when schools become obsolete?
No, I don't think schools will ever become obsolete.

CURRENT TOPIC
written by Hav

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - okay, so it was really the early 2000's - there was a social media platform called Myspace. For some of us, this instantly brings back memories of spending countless hours customizing our profiles, auto-play music players, scene kids, and the beginnings of internet celebrities like Jeffree Star.

Today, a good majority likely don't know what Myspace is or was. It was short-lived before Facebook took the internet by storm. Facebook opened the internet beyond the adolescent and young adult generation to be friendly to those older than us who wanted to keep in touch with long distance family, lost friends, or maybe they just wanted to see what it was. I definitely do remember a distinct time growing up where neither of my parents used the internet or remotely cared about it. I, on the other hand, sat feverishly creating my earliest trash graphics for a myspace profile. Now even cats have their own instagram accounts and businesses advertise through social media. There are even consultants to help businesses with their internet presence or to help singular people gain friends or followers. Internet fame, anyone?

Myspace also had a very unique way of allowing users to customize their pages. Profiles much like on HEX or tumblr required the in depth coding and graphic design beyond the average user's ability. Facebook and Twitter, for instance, have means of changing background or covers easily and quickly for even the most unsavvy of users. Entire sites were made and dedicated to designed profiles that a code could be snatched and used freely. I would truly say a good portion of graphic designers across the internet got their beginnings in Myspace.

Now, the internet is in our pockets, the talk at the table, and social media available on apps for ease of use. I remember when Facebook could post for you if you texted it. Who remembers clicking those keys over and over to get the letter they wanted from a flip phone? You had to want it.
Believe it or not, Myspace is still active today even though most of us jumped ship and went over to Facebook with the masses. Even so, customization is something we rarely think twice about - we can customize our browsers, phones, social media profiles and so much more without so much as a second thought or more than a few clicks.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?

These questions are meant to get your minds pondering the topic; they are not meant to limit you. Make sure to keep checking this post - we will post a new topic for discussion twice a month!

I'm not surprised. Though I wonder how active people really are there.

What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
I think it's hard work and requires a lot of dedication and effort. Especially now since it seems so easy and a lot of people want to become eg. a youtuber.

If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
Probably my new found favorites.

When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
Yes, most definitely. Because to me it shows that they care and understand that maintaining a proper social media site is important.

Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
Depends on the site, but yes I do. I create my own graphics.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
It really doesn't surprise me. I don't think it is common for those types of sites to be deleted even if it becomes outdated.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
My language so isn't HEX appropriate for that question.... in simplest and nicest words I think it is obnoxious at best

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
Probably some of my favorites.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
Yes and no. A business that clearly has a page just to have one normally makes me decide to not go with them because then it feels like if they can't be bothered to maintain their site that they are less capable

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
sometimes. I tend to get graphics from HEX designers, use a picture that I've taken, or make my own graphic. That last often isn't as good but still doable for me

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?

I'd heard rumours that it still existed. I'd go and see if my old proflie is still around bt I cannot remember it at all. It was where I met a lot of tv presenters from one of my favourite shopping channels.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?

That it actually seems very hard to do. I know people who haven't posted/uploaded for a while and they've lost followers so it feels like you constantly have to upload/post to keep their fame going. It all seems too high maintanence to me.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?

Probably all the stuff I am listening to constantly

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?

To me if a business has high quiality graphics they must be a well liked/respected business because they have taken the time and care to get good high quiality graphics.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?

Nope... well sometimes. My graphics for HEX are done mostly by a dear friend of mine and others are just pictures from the internet

I haven't use Myspace in years, I had no idea it was still going thought id would have ended when msn ended.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?

I don't believe in internet fame, just because a lot of people like your page doesn't make you a celebrity.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?

well I use facebook more than anything so it would have to be that.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?

on instagram they have a lot of buisness pages and they always make it look good enough that i have to search their store.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?

no i don't really use graphics a lot, i have a signature picture on HEX that someone made for me, I cant remember their name, I think it was Sara.

- Are you? Did you just go look it up?
I am a bit young to have used MySpace, but I certainly knew it existed. I honestly don't use much social media, so I will likely never go on the site.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
If it is your desire, go for it, though be ready for the criticism and other related issues that come with internet fame.

- If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
I would probably choose something like It's My Life by Bon Jovi. I love that song.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
I don't use social media, so I rarely come across this situation.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
I don't. Usually the default looks nicer than anything I could find.

Actually yes - I'm very surprised it's still around. I never had a MySpace page, but my hubby and kids did. I remember so many people leaving it for Facebook that it really does surprise me it's still a thing

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
I think too many are "internet famous" for all the wrong reasons. I know several actually earn a decent living by their fame, but it isn't for me. If someone is able to obtain and maintain it - good for them. I just wish it was for something better than what currently causes it.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?

I'm a fan of most types of music - but probably some type of rock/metal would be playing (Linkin Park/Queen, etc)

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?

Sometimes an image will catch my attention and I'll look into a particular product/site. I won't often buy though because many of the items I like wind up being way too expensive LOL

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?

I used to change my FB avatar every few weeks. You never knew what would show up next. I got them from internet searches. I didn't have one particular site . My HEX avatar came from a "dementor" search on the net.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
I had completely forgotten about it. I set up an account, went to it twice and never went back.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
Why would you want it?...I would not want any kind of fame. I prefer to be in the background.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?

I would have classical music on it....maybe some Neil Diamond but I have no profiles.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?

I don't use social media. I don't look business up online. I prefer to shop at local stores and only for items I need.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?

No...everything on my computer is what came with it. I never use social media so I have no pages etc.I don't have a cell phone either...but would not bother to have graphics.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
I'm surprised because everyone makes it out to be gone I didn't look it up though because I don't think it would add anything. xD

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
I think if it's what people want to go for it as long as others that don't want anything to do with it are left out of it.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
This reminds me of a Dutch site that used to have them too. Mine would probably change a lot since I have certain songs I'll listen to a lot and then not at all for quite a while. I'd probably just put songs I really like during that period on there until I feel like changing.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
I don't really look at businesses on Social Media tbh. xD On FB occasionally they'll pup up in the ads, and if it's something that interests me I might check their website out?

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
My phone and computer both have a boring standard background. I can't really do graphics and getting it from someone else always feels... slightly weird?

VanillaBean has a point. Many of the "social media famous" put a lot out there, yet get very upset when they are criticized for something. When you become famous for anything -sports, music, movies, internet- you will garner attention good & bad. Have to be ready for that & be able to handle. Otherwise, you are in for some problems

I have to agree there. People want to be famous but aren't prepared for the responses and negative comments that go with it. Also I don't feel that being internet famous, whether that through MySpace or YouTube etc., is a stable income because anything could happen and it could all be lost.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
I wasn't surprised no...these things usually don't get deleted, since many people have created their page. That would be really unfair.
Nope, did not go look it up.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
I am one who hardly is active on social media and I see the dangers of social media addiction, too. I hate to see how people have changed to be honest, how they all try to be visible, tkaing pictures not to remember the moment but to share it with others, like a neon sign screaming "here look at me, my life is wonderful, right, right, RIGHT?!" and then they go around and cry under their covers. As the current US president would say - SAD.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
This would probably change regularly, but I right nowprobably an album by Feist.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
It doesn't, no.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
I have been meaning to get a nice screensaver and desktop image for my phone - at the moment I have one screen lock image that says "Don't touch my phone, Muggle" and another one for the desktop that shows Hogwarts and the Whomping Willow with the text "Hogwarts is my Home" . I do want to ask graphic designers on here to make new images for me though.

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
I feel like it's not that expensive to just... leave the site there, especially if they can get corporations to make paid promoted pages and stuff like that. So, no, not that surprised. Also I recently tried to look up a friend's old MySpace page for the purpose of acquiring blackmail material, so I did know that it existed before reading about it in this thread, lol.

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
Until recently I thought it was not that useful, but then I started really thinking about it in terms of niche interest groups. There are people who are "Internet famous" within specific fan communities, like Harry Potter, and some of them are able to leverage that into offline opportunities, such as the chance to sit down with JK Rowling or to convince publishing agents to give their book a chance, because they already have a built-in platform on which to advertise new creative work. There are also people who are known for very specific things like making silly cakes or building LEGO sets or whatever, and that opens up opportunities in those areas. So while I think it's easy to dismiss Internet fame as fake or not valuable, I do think there are ways to navigate it in a positive and fulfilling way.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
First of all, I wouldn't, because I also had my fair share of music randomly auto-playing and it was just the worst. Secondly... I wouldn't! Auto-play music is the worst!!!

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
It definitely depends on the company. For fast food restaurants, no. For Harry Potter merch, yes.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
My phone background has been a drawing my cousin did of Batman for a literal decade. He's like 14 now and probably draws much better, but it has sentimental value. 😍

- I was surprised Myspace still existed. Are you? Did you just go look it up?
A little, I guess. I never used myspace - I briefly had a bebo before facebook, though!

- What are your thoughts on obtaining and maintaining internet fame?
It sounds exhausting. You kind of have to be always on, or you risk losing followers.

- Myspace was notorious for music players (that were often on auto play and scared me to death when it would finally load. -sigh- the days of dial up.) If you could put a music player on one of your profiles, what would you have on it?
Frankly I'm gutted this isn't a thing any more. I would put on whatever I was hyperfixating on at the time I guess - right now that's Twice.

- When you happen upon a Social Media page for a business, does the quality or use of their graphics or general presence affect their desirability to you?
Nah, not really. Unless it's super gorgeous and I spend ages looking at it.

- Do you customize your pages, browsers, or even phones with fantastic graphics? Where do you get yours? Designers on Hex? Tumblr?
Sometimes, yes. I get them from various sources. My hex profile is all images from google. I have a Skyrim theme on my google chrome browser. My desktop background is a variety of images from everywhere. My phone has a cute oppo theme.

- I am surprised that MySpace still exists, and no, I did not look it up. I trust your word. I closed down my page many years ago because I never used it and was afraid of hackers.
- I have never saught internet fame and I do not follow internet personalities. If a YouTube video of mine gets to 100 views, I am ecstatic! I learned not to look at the stats stating that most of my viewers only watch for a few seconds.
- I do not make my own music so I would not put a music player on any site. I know musicians who get upset when people give away their music while they are trying to keep a roof over their heads. These are not big names, but they are professionals and want to keep it that way.
- I often do not click on businesses' social media sites, but I do visit several social media sites that are run by not-for-profit organizations. A good site can help them to raise awareness and educate people about their work.
- The only thing I customize is the background on my computer and my mobile devices. I use pictures that I took myself or a picture of my husband that someone else took and gave to me. I tried buying two of those expensive picture cases for my iPad and phone, but the pictures are wearing off (two different companies), so I do not think that they are worth the extra money.
-While I was never active with MySpace, I do check my FaceBook account regularly, often at least twice a day. It started as a way to keep in tough with Pottermore players, where we did not have the restrictions of chat rooms (and the constant reporting for just saying 'Hi!'). Unfortunately, most of my friends there have moved on and do not chat any more. Pottermore was the glue that held us all together. Now, I chat about HEX and other topics, but I still miss the heyday of Pottermore and the community that sprung up around it.
