My favourite type of memes are those that are funny, but don't tend to be political or persuasive. They tend to be more of the fun and entertaining sort. I have created memes from scratch before, but none of them were any good. It isn't something I do on a regular basis. I do not think I have any future meme predictions. I mostly just like looking at memes I find on the web as long as they are funny. I tend to like a lot of the Harry Potter themed memes as well.

CURRENT TOPIC
Written by Japanthony

Ah, Youtube. Roughly 300 hours of video is uploaded to this site every minute. Naturally, this means there is an extremely diverse spread of content creators out there. However, there is one specific area that this month’s opening discussion will focus on. Read on to find out more!

A staple of Youtube in the modern day is children-aimed content. It’s become commonplace for parents to stick a child in front of a Peppa Pig playlist for an hour to keep them entertained. But what happens when children are on the other end of the screen? There has been a huge rise in children becoming Youtube stars over the last couple of years, with names such Ryan ToysReview hitting the headlines for being Youtube’s biggest earner of 2018, earning over $22 Million in just a year! Jojo Siwa (admittedly now a teenager) cultivated an entire brand through the site, and there are many, many names following suit. Bearing all this in mind, here are some questions to help get a conversation going:

Do you think it's right/acceptable for children to be starring in videos rather than simply enjoying their childhood? What do you think of the parents who are more often than not producing it all and taking in the money? Are you surprised at all that children under 13 are one of the fastest-growing group of influencers online?

These questions are meant to get your minds pondering the topic; they are not meant to limit you. Make sure to keep checking this post - we will post a new topic for discussion twice a month!
Remember, the more you participate and discuss our current chat topic, the higher the chance of winning the title and graphic of Muse of the Month plus 200 HPs!

If they want to and agree to it, I'm okay with it. If they're being coerced to be on camera, that's awful. I personally try to keep my own child off the internet, even in terms of facebook photos. Once he's old enough to enthusiastically consent/seek out fame, I'll support him.

What do you think of the parents who are more often than not producing it all and taking in the money?
If they're pressuring their kids to make content just so they can make money - they're evil. I think most parents who put videos of their kids online though won't be making any money. They're just trying to spread joy.

Are you surprised at all that children under 13 are one of the fastest-growing group of influencers online?
Not really. People have always loved kids being funny/cute.

~Do you think it's right/acceptable for children to be starring in videos rather than simply enjoying their childhood?
I think so, yeah. For a lot of children who are in youtube videos, they say they really enjoy doing what they do, and for some they even get to do what they'd otherwise do but then with some money involved. As long as it's enjoyable to them and they're not negatively effected by it, I don't see why they shouldn't be doing it.

~What do you think of the parents who are more often than not producing it all and taking in the money?
I can see why this happens a lot. A lot of young children aren't really capable of handling money, so it's saver for the parents to have it. They might have some vague ideas, but parents can help their ideas into a whole video and they're likely to help out with the production since their kid might have no idea about filming, editing, and all of that. As well as parents might be able to see what could potentially lead to people shaming their kids. I don't think any kid that has a youtube channel should get to do it all by themselves, since it's a lot to deal with at any age, and parents should at the very least be monitoring it if not actively helping out. ^^
I do think it's bad that some people use their children as a source of income, though. Especially if these kids are pressured into doing it.

~Are you surprised at all that children under 13 are one of the fastest-growing group of influencers online?
I am not. As Tati said, people have always found children funny. More and more children are growing up with technology at an early age, so it makes sense that more of them would become influencers online.

I have seen a video series where a child - can't remember the exact age but is definitely under 5 - is "baking" or "cooking" something. A parent is right there with him. I think it is so adorable as the child seems to be having so much fun. It's almost like one of the shows you see on Food Network. Something like that - I don't have a problem with. It's when the child looks uncomfortable or unwilling that it becomes an issue or when it seems truly staged.

What do you think of the parents who are more often than not producing it all and taking in the money?
Depends on what is being done with the money... If the parent is putting the money away for the child's future - more power to them. However, if the parent is pushing the child to do this for the parent so the parent doesn't have to work - BIG problem with it.

Are you surprised at all that children under 13 are one of the fastest-growing group of influencers online?
Actually, yes, I was a bit surprised to hear that. I knew there were a few more youngins in the mix, but I had no idea they were growing that fast. Hopefully, these kiddies are making a positive impact on their peers

It depends if the child agrees to it and is not asked to do anything they don't want to do... but the thing is when people make videos they "fans" always want more every day and the kids should be able to go out and play and not have a schedule. I honestly watch kids and his dad trying different food and toys and the kids loves it so that type of thing i'm ok with.... the money issue.... the parents should put the money from the videos into a savings account for when the kid grows up and give it to them when they are old enough.

sorry for double post//

It depends on the age. The child really needs to understand what is going on and not be forced to do anything...even if it's just being cute. Children need to enjoy their childhood. If they are constantly forced to do a video it's wrong.
The money should be put aside for the child. The parents should get none of it.
No, it doesn't surprise me with the way society is going. I would not watch them...but I am not a fan of children in general. I have no patience with them...or with most adult.s

Having a YouTube career as a child is just like being a child actor in my opinion, so it isn't exactly wrong assuming it's what the child actually wants. There is nothing wrong with starting an acting career at an age like 11 years old. Just look at Emma Watson. However, there needs be very good adult supervision because putting a child in the public eye means that people will be able to make cruel comments casually and hurt the child's self-esteem.

I hate the idea of the parents get all the money. If they're producing everything, yes, they can keep a quarter or so for themselves, but everything should go to the child because in the end, it is the child putting themselves out there and working.

I'm not surprised that young children are internet-famous, although I never realized it, as most of the people I know that produce content are in their late teens or actual adults. I guess in this world of hate, it's nice to see innocent children being happy or whatever they do on YouTube. It also helps that people are obsessed with the idea of prodigies (like those kids who can play violin well at age 3 or something).

I agree with Soraruko. If a child is going to do something like this, there definitely needs to be appropriate adult supervision. Have to make sure the child isn't taken advantage of or misled by others. Too many all too willing to di harm.

That, of course, leads to the problem that it is the parent who is taking advantage. One can only hope there is someone in the child's life to aid them

Growing up, I know a common hobby for many of us was getting together and filming YouTube videos. Sometimes you’d film gaming videos, sometimes just random ones, but either way, it was just a hobby kids had fun doing together. It probably didn’t help that parents back then had little to no knowledge of YouTube.

The parents don’t necessarily take in all the money – I’m sure some are just happy to support their children whilst making sure they’re not overspending. But I’m not surprised that children are slowly becoming influencers – we all admired the Harry Potter stars as we grew up alongside them, so it’s probably the same principle for children nowadays wanting someone their age to relate to.

Yeah, parental supervision is important. Alongside making sure the child isn’t misled, it’s also important that the child doesn’t get carried away with all the money they earn, as children are not necessarily very responsible with it.

This is a really nice way of looking at it. So long as they’re not being taken advantage of, what’s wrong with them making the odd gaming video?

So first off,
I don't think there is anything wrong with children on youtube. I think the child should have a say in it, and maybe it is best not to mass produce and get your childs image out there without some sort of control or handle on things. Youtube is a platform for people to do what they love. So what if they are 5 or 50. if they are popular they have reason to be ( I think at least) Besides, it's not cut and dry. It's not as easy as uploading a video for revenue.

This made me snort. While I feel different. It did make me nod in slight agreement. I feel the opposite though. I would rather watch 5-13 then 13-18. As that age group is usually. IDK - they try too hard to be what society wants them to be. Dancers, Singers, etc etc.
-
Is it really any different than watching Reality TV in this modern age?
