MONTHLY MUSINGS

It was a quiet afternoon in the Social Media Hub. Maya, Gilda, Thene, and Lipster were sitting around a table staring at the blank Doc screen on their computer. The little cursor flashed before their eyes, yet the words to make it move along the screen could not be found.

Thene looked at the three Mods and noticed their puzzled expressions. "Is the new topic ready for the start of the month? I hope you all haven't been slacking off because events have been going on." She wandered off to another room, while the three mods sat there still unsure of what to write.

"This is terrible, our new topic needs to go live in a few days. What will we do?" asked Gilda.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I've hit a creative wall. It's like my inspiration is gone completely." muttered Maya.

"What we need is a little spark, something to get the wheels in our brains rolling, but what?" asked Lipster.

The three continued to look at the screen, and then suddenly a smile began to perch upon their lips. In a happy unison they shouted.

"A Muse!!!"

HOW IT WORKS

That's right, we want to be inspired each month by the very people who come to take part in our monthly chats!

As always, we will have new topics twice a month for you to talk about. The second post of this thread will be updated to display the current topic being discussed. In addition, we will be awarding one ticket per topic that you respond to
with a minimum five sentences each post, for a chance of two regular tickets each month.

You can earn one ticket for both topics throughout the entire month, regardless of when the topic is posted. So, for example, if a you post a reply for the first topic after the second topic is posted, you will receive one ticket for the first topic. The only deadline for both topics is the last day of the month at 11:59 p.m. HEX time.

However, for those who keep the conversation going by staying active with more than one post per topic, we will offer one extra ticket to a very special drawing. In order to be eligible, you must have one post responding to the moderator's initial topic post;
and then at least one post responding to another user's post, with at least 3 sentences, furthering the discussions. Please note you can only earn one ticket this way, regardless how many extra posts you make.

Once a month, we will randomize from those who received an activity ticket for a winner of a custom graphic award: the "Muse of the Month."

PRIZES

Bi-Weekly Topics:

All tickets from the posts replying to the current topic (not including the extra activity tickets) will be randomized for the following prizes each month:

✨ Vesor Socialis Spell or 15,000 Galleons
✨ Vesor Socialis Spell or 15,000 Galleons
100 HPs
100 HPs
100 HPs
5,000 Galleons
5,000 Galleons
5,000 Galleons

PRIZES

Muse of the Month:

All tickets from eligible posts for the extra activity tickets will be randomized for the following prize each month:

Custom Graphic + 200 HPs

The winner of the "Muse of the Month" drawing will receive a custom graphic with their favourite color as the background + 200 House Points!
And will be added to our List of “Muse of the Month Winners” here.

So what do you have to lose? Let's start talking! If you have any questions or concerns about the new structure, please don't hesitate to contact either Maya or Gilda.

*Please note the title "Muse of the Month" can only be won once every 6 months.

Monthly Musings ~ Current Topic
June 1st 2020

Written by Jordan

From young children to elderly grannies, it seems nearly everyone has some form of social media. With such a widespread phenomenon, there are bound to be hiccups. Have you ever added a family member only to be bombarded on your timeline with indiscreet postings? Anything from private medical issues to inter-personal drama to complaining about their job.

Recently a trend has gone around on Facebook, that seems harmless enough at first glance. These posts tend to start out with "We're all bored here in quarantine, let's learn something about each other!". The poster typically answers questions such as "What was your first pet? (post name and photo!)" and "Shout your school pride, when and where did you graduate from?". Unfortunately most of the questions featured in these posts are typical security questions that can be used to hack into accounts easily.

However, many people use social media as a way to remain easily connected with their loved ones and friends, who may have otherwise fallen out of touch. They share any and all information, and freely chat in the comments. This has worked out in many families' favor as globalization progresses, and people move farther away from home.

On LinkedIn, there's been a new wave of posts about how creating resumes and applying to jobs is old news. The new way is to establish yourself as a thought leader. As a thought leader, posting consistently and openly about your experience both positives and negatives. Many people have said this tactic worked for securing them a job, as companies have approached them directly.

The negative side to that, is the open sharing of previous employers. Too many posts have revolved around problems in the workplace, with specific people and companies. While the 'thought leader' tactic works for some, oversharing becomes a problem.

Have you seen specific instances of oversharing on social media? What were your initial thoughts and feelings?

Do you freely share information on social media? Why or why not?

Have you screened through your privacy settings to ensure any personal information you share isn't readily available to the general public?

These questions are meant to get your minds pondering the topic. They in no way limit you on what you can say or answer. Please feel free to ask questions as well, and also to answer or respond to what others posts. This helps to keep the conversation going. It also works to qualify you for a chance to be our Muse of the Month. Keep this thread on watch as new topics are posted twice a month.

You will have until June 30th at 11:59 pm HEX time to respond to this chat.

It is hard to discern what is real and what is fake sometimes. I research things all the time to try to find out what is real and what is not Sadly my father thinks everything that is poste on Facebook is real. Even when I show him on multiple sites that it is not. He would rather believe some stranger over me, He is so set in his views that if I disagree, I am the one telling fake news. The other day FB flagged one of his posts and said it had been proven fake and it was unreal about he railed on and on.

Fake news has become more prevalent with the advent of all the social media platforms that are available now. It is a shame, because they can be such a powerful tool for good causes.

It makes it hard to have a real conversation, because people get so vehement now . Another by product of being inundated with Fake News. When I was growing up he always told me to only believe half of what you see and none of what you read, lol. What a turn around for him.

Fake news... Unfortunately, I associate this term with Trump and his cabinet, so can't take it seriously.

If we're talking about clickbait/faked stories on the internet. I have had my share of experiences with it. I was caught out once posting an angry rant about Dwayne Johnson and his opinions about millenials, only to find out he never said anything of the sort. The only way to really deal with it is to take everything you read online with a grain of salt. It's not too hard to fact-check a lot of times. If anything seems out of place or strikes a funny cord, it's worth a quick google search.

I always triple check anything I read..even from local news channels. Every once in awhile even they get taken in. The only thing you can do is check., You can't believe much of anything now. It's a shame. To many people are taken in by this (and other scams)

Since I don't do social media, I don't know prevalent it is. I imagine there is a lot of it. One person seeing a story then spreading it,

It's to the point where you have to prove something to me for me to believe you. I hate being that way, but I won't just randomly assume what you are telling me is true.

I think the problem with fake news is that a lot of people just listen, but don't want or think to take the time to actually fact-check or think about what they've heard. Or if they hear something that doesn't fit their worldview, they just ignore it. So people end up hearing what they want to hear, and believing what it's easy to believe. It's a problem on the right, and it's a problem on the left, which really makes it hard to have meaningful conversations. I try to listen to media from all around the board so I can hear what everyone's saying and then sort out what's right, but there's only so much you can do.

I am incredibly amused that this would be the topic for this, right when I finally come back from a long and unexpected Hiatus.

In that time that I was away, I moved to a new position in my workplace. The official title? Ad Content Reviewer.

What does that mean?

It means I'm part of the team that tries to keep that fake news out of those ads you see popping up everywhere. Those "content sponsored by" widgets you see at the bottom or side of websites full of "feel good" slice of life stories and slideshows of celebrity houses.

Yes, that is right my friends. I, Adalind Maddigan, am the internet police. I kid you not. That's exactly how I'm putting it on my resume if I ever leave this job. I am part of what is only one of the many companies that put those ads there, but we're doing our best to keep anything questionable away from impressionable minds.

The hardest part of my job though is deciding "Is this a news site, or is it a bored blogger trying to get clicks?" I've been at this since February and I still don't have an equation for it. Yes, there are some that are obvious, but some of them are really good at it.

My best advice?
If the information they are trying to sell you is spread over more than one page; leave.

I don't think I have ever seen any false articles about anything, maybe those 5 minute hacks but these aren't news.

My advice is, I guess, to see if the news are on more than one or two sites. If they are, there is 70% chance for them to be real and not fake news.
If it's not then it has 80% chance to be fake news.

And.... That's it. I have no idea what I am talking about but if you read the ones before me, you will learn more than you have here. Lmao.

Looks like a few of you are strong in your ways of spotting fake news. Though I'm curious have any of you ever had to prove a friend wrong by showing them proof? Do you "fact police" their posts to help stop fake news by showing them articles from sites like Snopes.com, factcheck.org or even Politifact.com? I believe I've seen someone say that they have had to do this for a family member. How do you cope or avoid arguments with those who honestly believe everything they read on Facebook or other social media sites?

Fake news are not all obvious. Some writers can make fake news sound so real while sometimes we identify unbelievable things as fake things when they are really real things. I personally like to check the fact twice in two different websites. If their answers are different I'll check a third website, and on and on. I also like to stick with one writer at a time if I discover that their posts are real. Fake news are really horrid and when you read one and check if it is real or not it wastes a lot of time. I hope no one writes one on HEX!😊

‘Fake News’, ‘Alternative Facts’ and other trite phrases are quite simply yet another ’smoke and mirrors’ spin doctor tactic. It saddens me that so many people are either too busy or too lazy to actually seek the actual truth in a story.
Some 25 odd years ago, we used to joke that the Queen Mother had already died and was ‘put on ice’, ready for when the government of the day needed to distract the voters from legislation that was unpopular i.e. they could hide that piece of legislation being passed into law.
When you look at the people who are yelling ‘Fake News!’ in a detached reasoned way, you start to see how desperate these people are to hide their own misdeeds. Those folks who are throwing this label around are frequently in a position of privilege, and they are abusing that privilege in an blatant manner. If you are only getting your news from one source you are unlikely to see the whole truth, and if you are getting your news ‘free’ it is far less likely that there is any substance to what you are consuming. I would like it if people started using their brain to analyse what they are being fed. It is important to see both sides of the arguments and read/listen to other points of view because just getting your news from one biased source is quite frankly foolish. The more opinions you read, the closer you get to the real truth.

My teacher used to talk about fake news a lot, so naturally she gave us a way to spot it.

First you consider the source- is it known for being somewhat sketchy? Look at the URL, is it trying to impersonate a bigger news source? Look around on the website, does it have contact info? Maybe look up the article name, if other, more trustworthy sources pop up and confirm its true then its probably not fake news!
Then, you check if it has any supporting sources, if not its probably fake.
Read the whole story, does it seem crazy?
When in doubt ask a teacher or a librarian, or just ignore the source. Also check the date to make sure it wasn't posted on April Fools!

One of my professors actually gave an interesting view of fake news that I kinda agree with.

All news is fake news.

Because news is presented by a person and written by a person it will always contain a person's bias, there are certainly times that these biases will be negligible but it is an interesting viewpoint, one that I think has merit to it.

I remember in college there was one paper I had to write about some study and the relevance to another project that was currently ongoing that my professor was running. Based on the other professor's thought I read the study and as I was doing so I ended up completely trashing it in my paper because of the flaws I noted of how subjective it was... the project ended up being put on hold after that paper while they fixed the flaws.

That isn't to say nothing is usable but I think the best is to read the news from various sources and pick out what is in common for the best unbiased picture

Your teachers advice on looking at the URL is great advice - and unfortunately something that not a lot of people do. I get those sites at work all the time. nycpost is a big one. That is NOT the url... but it sure do sound like it don't it?

I've never had to correct friends or family about anything important (though I do have one friend who will believe everything he likes when it comes to video games - real or not) but I've had some pretty heated arguments about the validity of a lot of the news that comes through at work. Most recently a website came through claiming they knew the cause of death of a celebrity for 100% certainty within hours of their passing - before an autopsy had even been started. It took me 5 newer articles from reputable sources saying that there has not yet been any investigation to convince someone who is *trained* to look for these things for a living that it wasn't real. Some of these sites are really convincing.
