WWN March Official Discussion

Even though we're well into the new year, it isn't too late to still think about New Year's resolutions. We can just call them... March resolutions! It doesn't need to be the new year to try to form a new habit or break an old one. And between you and me, unusual resolutions are much more interesting than boring old common ones. Luckily, January's broadcast of the WWN took a look as some rather unique resolutions within the wizarding world.

Here are some questions to consider:
- What was your favorite segment from this broadcast? Why?
- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?

I don’t think I would ever use a time turner for anything, not even something like helping to accomplish a goal. If I haven’t been able to do it by when I said I would, I would just try again next time. There are just too many risks involved with time travelling.

There are quite a few noble causes I would support if I were in a position to do so. But my main one would probably be centred around trying to discover more about rare genetic conditions such as my own. There is still a lot we don’t know, and I would love to find out more.

I would use a notepad and pen to help keep track of a long-term goal. It would enable me to start diary entries and the like. While time turners and pensieves are all very good, there are potential dangers with using both to help with success, particularly when it comes to time travelling.

I don’t know for certain, but I like to think that Theodore Nott’s resolution would be centred around trying to shake off the negative connotations that accompanied his surname. His father was a Death Eater and I would hope he would want to try to move on.

- What was your favorite segment from this broadcast? Why?
I listened to all of them and I found them interesting and funny. I felt bad for Stan Shunpike who used the Time Tuner. He tried to change his fate but realized he would have died and so leaves his younger self to be taken under the imperio. Then there was another story on the Time Tuner with Filch and Trelawney. I thought Filch and Trelawney were funny especially how Filch describes her running. I laughed so hard. Then I had to laugh out loud when I heard what Filch resolutions. He didn’t want the Weasley Twins to stay at Hogwarts. I did listen to S.P.E.W. and I do support the cause but it was boring not disrespect but I remember Ron.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
No, I would not want to change my fate. My resolution is always to get good grades in college and reach my goal in life.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
It’s a muggle cause. I always support Breast Cancer since I know people who have it. It’s personal for me and we raise money by selling T-Shirts and walking for the cause. I don’t want anyone to lose any family or friend due to this type of cancer or any cancer.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
I think the best way to keep a resolution is to never give up and take it in my case slow. It’s no use to rush and be overworked or stressed about it.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
I think a little Liquid Luck wouldn’t hurt once in a while to help with taking test.

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?
I would have to pick Colin Creevey. I think he would want to create a magical paper at Hogwarts so he can take pictures.

As my New Year's resolution this year was all about making more time for me to relax and do the things that I enjoy a time turner would be really really useful. I struggle to let go of work and spend a lot of time working outside my actual work hours so I wanted to make sure that I brought more balance into my life and the time turner would give me that extra time to spend on myself. Although somehow this feels like cheating. I am using a loophole to avoid actually making the change in my life that I want to.
In terms of noble causes to support, there are so many and I don't know which I would choose. I would probably go for something local to me, maybe one of the environmental causes, so that I would be able to see the difference my support was making and I would know that my time/donation was being used properly (there are so many charities out there that I don't wholly trust are using donations in the right way). Either that or I would support some kind of medical research.
I would say that the best way to achieve a goal is to share it with someone. If there is someone you can talk to about it, they can help to keep you accountable for keeping it- in a good way obviously.

I am positive that I would not use a time turner to help me achieve my new year's resolutions. Rather, the things I would use it for are not things I consider to be resolutions: they are things I have been working on for longer than the start of this year, and that I will continue to work on indefinitely. My education, for example. Moreover, I have not made resolutions for the last couple of years. Resolutions, in my experience, really help you focus for the first three or four weeks of the year. After those weeks, you have a period in which you are not as focused and slack off. This makes me feel so bad that I usually quit sometime in february, so I stick with long-term goals now.
If I could support one noble cause this year, I would volunteer at my local animal shelter. I imagine it would be very fulfilling to help them, and I would love doing it. It would also be great because I am highly allergic to most pets and that way I would be able to get my fill of animal fun without getting a pet of my own and being subjected to sniffing and rashes all day long.
I do not really have tips or tricks to help me stick to my goals. They are things I find very important, so they are always at the top of my mind somewhere. I might be less focused on them for a few days at a time but I never forget them.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
I think I'd use it so I have more time to go to the gym. My work schedule can be hectic and I get home more so so tired that I barely have energy left to go to the gym. So I would definitely use a time turner to go there in the morning at the same time as my other self would be working and then meet together at lunch time. So basically three extra mornings would be perfect as I'd get extra rest and then go to the gym I think all in all that would give me like... An extra 9h-12h per week. I think I need to invest in a time turner

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal? Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
Mostly keep them realistic with an actual goal. A lot of people say that they want to go to the gym more often. That's right, but how often? 2 times? That seems doable every week. Now if you start saying you'd like to go to the gym 4-5 times a week and you used to never set a foot there that's not a realistic goal and you'll probably feel unmotivated to keep going if you don't manage it.
Same thing with any weight loss resolutions or any kind of thing. You need to make them measurable.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
Yes! My resolution is always to eat healthier and snack less, so I could use the time turner to go and take snacks off my past self without suffering the cravings myself.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
A cause related to supporting orphans and other vulnerable children. Whether it be funding for group homes, better support for placement procedures, or lawyers for minors, that's the thing for me.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
None, I'm completely terrible at it.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
Magical shock collar? I'm sure there are potions that help you focus, charms to remind you every morning, etc, etc.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
I never make New Year's resolutions. I would not use a time turner. You don't know how you might change history. You could accidentally wipe your family out of existence. You could make things worse for the planet if you are not careful. Imagine what could happen if you went back in time and that version of yourself saw you.
- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation. They collect food, clothes, furniture, games and other needs for the Lakota living on the reservation. The unemployment rate is 80% and the average life span is 45 years. Many houses have no roofs, windows or doors. The weather is brutal in the winter. The suicide rate is the highest in the nation. Drugs and alcohol are a major problem. Even something as simple as a box of socks goes a long way in helping them.
- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
I don't make resolutions or do long term goals. If there is something I need to remember, I just write it down on a piece of paper. I think setting goals can backfire. If you don't achieve them it could make you feel bad about yourself.
- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
Maybe set some kind of magical reminder that would tell you daily what you need to do. ( ie go for a walk, get your homework done.)
- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?
Seamus Finnigan...stop blowing things up.

- What was your favorite segment from this broadcast? Why?

My favorite segment was the one with Mr. Filch and Professor Trelawney I laughed at their adventures with the Time Turner.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?

I don’t think I would use the time turner but if I was going to use it, I think I would use it to help me get things done that I keep putting off. I have a tendency to procrastinate.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?

That’s a hard one. There are so many noble causes that deserve support but I think if I had to choose just one, I would support cancer research since I know I have a history of it in my family.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?

I don’t have any tips for sticking with my New Year’s resolutions because I don’t make them. I have made them before but they never last so I quit making them. I prefer to stick to short term goals that I can finish before I get distracted with something else and forget about them.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?

I could always try drink some Felix Felicis every day. A little extra luck might help me remember to keep my resolutions. I’m not sure much of anything else would help.

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?

My character would be Colin Creevey and his goal would be to find a way to use his love of taking pictures without following people around harassing them.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
I prefer goals to resolutions and mine was to make sure that I exercise to a good sweat at least five days a week. I would use a time turner to get me back to fall I love the weather then and long walks outside would sure beat doing miles on the treadmill.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
I would support additional cancer research, I learned at a young age the destruction this disease causes, it doesn't discriminate, it attacks ages from infants to seniors and even with all of the research done thus far there certainly is a need for more.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
If I have to use the treadmill I pick out a movie or tv series and I am only allowed to watch when I am walking , it has helped me stick with my goal. When the weather corporates I want to be outside, for me there is nothing worse that being stuck in the house on a pretty sunny day.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
A magical reward such as a non fattening treat, wait since it's magical it's not fattening, 😉😉 would work for me, If that didn't work I bet a few of the prank items from Weasley Wizard Wheezes would keep me on track, U- No-Poo for example...ick !

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?
Seamus Finnigan's resolution might be to curb his habit of blowing stuff up. I am sure he got a lot of teasing and at a certain age began to have an eye for the ladies. It would be nice if that wasn't the first impression the girls had of Seamus, he was a handsome little chap after all.

I could use a time turner to accomplish the resolution of cleaning and organizing my house once I moved into it. 😂 But seeing as traveling through time could also be risky and affect certain things, I probably would not want to use it just to be safe. It's not a major problem if it got some then or now, so I can always make it a new goal/resolution for next time.

If I could support any noble cause in this new year.... Hmmm there's too many that I'd want to help with. Maybe that's a reason to use a time turner... Since I can't pick just one and there's not enough time to help all of them.

A pensieve would be a brilliant idea to remember resolutions that you make! Unfortunately since i do not have one sitting around in my closet, I have to settle for just using a planner to set my goals to paper. If I have them written somewhere that I look regularly, I have a better chance of not forgetting them, and thus a better chance of reaching my goals. If I can break the ultimate goal into small parts, I like to try separating it into steps so I can see progress when I reach each step every month.

Other magical methods to help succeed in keeping resolutions.... Umm maybe if they're was something that lets you know the progress you've made at the end of the day or end of the week.

Blaise Zabini could have the resolution of being less arrogant; assuming he'd want to do that, it could lead to him being happier in life.

- What was your favorite segment from this broadcast? Why?

I liked the time turner ones the best. I found them to be very entertaining and humourous to listen to. I also like anything that involves the time turner because it's one of my favourite devices.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?

Absolutely. I would definitely do use the time turner to help me accomplish a New Year resolution. I would love to use the time turner in general. My resolution would be to get all my work done. Sounds boring, I know, but that was my resolution for this past year.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?

I would definitely support S.P.E.W. in the magical world. I thought it was a very clever idea for Hermione to come up with an organization to help set house elves free. In the muggle world, it would probably be for human or animal rights because I am a huge advocate for both. I believe that everybody person or animal deserves to be treated with respect.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?

One way is to use a journal to log your progress. Every day or week, you can jot down what you did towards meeting the resolution or long term goal. You can also use a friend to hold you accountable. Check in with you every so often and see how you are doing on your resolution or goal.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?

As I mentioned above keeping a journal or asking a friend to hold you accountable are both ways to succeed. You cold also set a time line or schedule for taking steps towards your resolution or goal.

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?

Lee Jordan would probably have the resolution of hosting so many hours on Potterwatch because he is the host of Potterwatch.

If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
I think I might use it to go back and have more time to work on my goals of advancing my career. I feel like I always need more time to make my dreams come true and if I had the time turner, I could go back and give myself extra time to work and perfect my projects.

The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
I would probably want to support a cause that helps the homeless or people struggling financially. This year though I also would want to support a cause that helps with this pandemic we are dealing with currently and give proper equipment to our nurses and doctors as well as help make sure as many lives can be saved as possible.

Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
I think writing it down somewhere where you will always see it would help. It also would be a good idea to tell a family member or friend about it and have them check in at times and help encourage you to keep going and accomplish the goal.

Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
You could use Felix Felicis to give yourself luck in achieving your resolutions.

Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?
I pick Oliver Wood. I think his New Year’s resolution would be to train harder and be better at Quidditch then ever before.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be? I don't really have any resolutions to be honest, but I would like to write books for a living, and considering there's not often time enough in the day to get everything done snd write, perhaps a time turner would help in giving me more time to write.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be? In the Muggle world any cause that helps, protects and cares for animals are my types of causes. The RSPCA, PDSA, Dog's Trust, Cat's Protection League - all charities I can get behind. I truly feel awful when I think about neglected or abused animals and I would want to help them if I could. For Magical causes, maybe something to help Werewolves. Lupin had always had a terrible time in trying to get employment because as soon as people found out he was a Werewolf, he was made to move on. Maybe something that would help with not only getting employment, but also in helping destroy some of the stigma surrounding Lycanthrophy. Helping people see that not all Werewolves are bad people and that so long as they take a Wolfsbane Potion every full moon, they can just be like every other person.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal? I don't really have any tips or tricks. I'm not great with resolutions, I've often found sticking with them to be difficult. I think the most important part of sticking to resolutions, or any plan for your life is first wanting it enough that you'll not forget and stick with it, and secondly having the will power to keep it up. If it's something that you don't really want to give up or stick to then you won't. You need to really want it.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions? Well, you could use a vanishing spell on all the chocolate and junk food in your house if you're on a diet, or a repelling spell to keep you away from the biscuit tin like the ones that repel Muggles away from the place where the Quidditch World Cup was held.

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why? I would hope that Marietta Edgecombe would feel bad about dobbing Dumbledore's Army in to Umbridge (even without the spots) and I'd like to think that a future resolution of hers would be to be braver and more loyal to her friends. I understand that she was under a lot of pressure to join the DA from Cho, and a lot of pressure from her mum who worked at the Ministry, not to do anything to break the rules - and I imagine her mum was only worried for Marietta's own safety - Umbridge was a nasty piece of work after all, but it was Marietta's lack of courage that got her in the mess in the first place. Being able to stand up to her friend and say "No. I don't want to join the DA" would have solved everything. I also hope that a resolution to get rid of her sneak spots worked too, as I thought it was a very mean jinx even if it did help at the time by keeping her quiet.

- What was your favorite segment from this broadcast? Why?

I really enjoyed New Year’s Pensieve, because it was exceedingly relatable for me. I tend to relive embarrassing moments often, and without the need of a pensieve, so I know how it feels to dwell on that.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?

I think I would, not so much for a resolution but more so for the ability to get to the gym with my crazy schedule. For the past few months, I’ve not been able to get to the gym because my free time has been taken up by our house remodel and I’m starting to feel gross from not making it to the gym. I feel like with the amount of things currently waiting on my attention, a time turner is the only way I’ll get back to the gym this year.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?

Oh this is easy for me. I have so many causes I support, but the two I would like to put more emphasis on are Autism Awareness and the Humane Society. Both have a big presence locally for me and I’d love to get out more and do for both of them.

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?

Make them visible and part of your daily life. Most goals require integration into your daily routine. Another thing that helps is putting your goals in writing and putting them up to inspire you daily. Set smaller goals as part of you bigger goals, to give yourself the ability to not get overwhelmed by the big picture, and instead, get inspired by the small victories.

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?

The only other thing that comes to mind would be the Rememberall. I guess it could be used to remind you that you have those goals when you forget.

- Pick a minor character from the Harry Potter franchise. What do you think their New Year's resolution would be and why?

Let’s go with Sybell Trelawney and getting sober. I feel like she was already a bit of a joke and her love of Sherry only made her worse. I would hope that after the Battle of Hogwarts, she realized this and cleaned herself up.

I don't think that I would use a time turner to help me accomplish a New Year's resolution. Firstly, I do not usually make New Year's resolutions. And if I did make them, I would succeed or fail them due to the diligence or lack of diligence expended in keeping them. Using a time turner would be cheating, starting again. Also, in general, I think that New Year resolutions are over-rated. We can make resolutions to change at any time of the year. And we can set goals for those resolutions or lifestyle changes that may be shorter or longer than twelve months. In fact, it might even be better to set shorter time spans for the achievement of resolutions because many people tend to procrastinate. If a resolution had a short-term goal that was doable in one month, more people might work hard at their resolutions. After that, the following month, they can make a new resolution or goal to be reached in that month. Sometimes it is better to aim for small steps than giant leaps.

If I was to make a resolution for a noble cause it would most certainly have something to do with animal conservation - especially of the critically endangered species. Otherwise, it would be to do with the environment, global warming, and climate change. We can make as many resolutions as we wish, but if we do not have a planet to inhabit, none of those resolutions will be of much use. I think that it is most important to look after the natural environment because we only have this one planet to live on. There is no Planet B.

- If you could use a time turner to help you accomplish one New Year's resolution, would you do it? What would the resolution be?
Frequently I get to the end of the day and regret that I wasn’t more productive. Usually because I’ve spent too much time in the wizarding world than in my real life! So I would use a time turner to go back and make better use of the day. The three resolutions that suffer from my lack of discipline when it comes to time are being more proactive with muggle homework, completing cleaning and organizing projects at home, and getting more exercise. Maybe after a few days or weeks of using the time turner, I would enjoy the feeling of satisfaction and I would spend my time more productively without having to use a time turner.

- The broadcast proposed making a resolution to support a noble cause, such as S.P.E.W. If you could support any noble cause in this new year, Muggle or magical, what would it be?
The noble cause that I support throughout the year is conservation education at the zoo where I volunteer. Most of the work is just having fun conversations with guests about the animals in order to build empathy. But we can also talk to them about conservation issues in the wild and what we can do to preserve habitat for wildlife. I also try and live more sustainably in my life. As they say, we should practice what we preach!

- Andrea used a pensieve in order to not forget about her resolutions. What tricks or tips do you have for sticking with your resolutions or meeting a long-term goal?
I’m a visual person, so having visual reminders could be helpful. That can be images that I see everyday to remind me of the important goal that I set for myself. That hasn’t always been successful, since I get used to the images and stop looking at them. Checklists can also be helpful, and I should make more use of those. Specifically, not just make the checklist but actually complete the items on the checklist!

- Time turners and pensieves aside, what other magical methods could you use to help succeed in keeping New Year's resolutions?
I would love those household spells to keep my house cleaner and more organized! Better transportation methods would make it easier to get to the gym or to go to hiking trails for exercise. Those methods would also make it easier to visit family and friends, which would meet a goal of staying in touch with loved ones more than I do.
