January 2020 Official Discussion

Greetings! December's issue of the Daily Prophet was about my least favorite thing about this season: Christmas carols! Now, maybe you're like me and are notoriously Grinch-like when these tunes start playing at all hours of the day on your favorite radio stations. Or perhaps you are more like my grandmother, who has been blasting her favorite cassette tape carols since November 1st. Regardless of which side of the line you fall on, join the Newsstand this month for a discussion all about it.

Q U E S T I O N S

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.

- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
My favorite holiday song is actually split between two songs. I love Do you Hear what I Hear and What Child Is This. These songs are my all time favorite CHristmas carols. I have to hear them or it just isn't Christmas. I do have other songs I like to hear like Hark the Herald, Last Christmas, 12 Days of Christmas, Angels we Have Heard on High, Oh Come all Ye Faithful, and the Christmas Shoes. Which are all very good songs I like to hear. Plus there are so much more not even listed here. But if I cannot hear my most favorite two then it just makes me sad. Heck even when the first couple of notes are played on my two favorite songs I perk up and immediately say the song's title, and a huge smile comes across my face. Now songs I dislike are Santa Baby and All I want for Christmas. Those two songs are so overplayed I honestly do not want to hear them.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!
No I don't. Do they even play any? The radio stations here only play Christmas music non<x>stop. So whatever they play is all we hear around here.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
No I have never gone caroling and not really sure I actually ever want to. I don't really like to sing in front of others much. I do have a decent voice but, I am not confident about it and do not like others hearing me.

- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.
Do you Hear What I Hear, Hark the Herald, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Last Christmas, 12 Days of Christmas. But then again like I said I do not sing for people or in public. So good luck getting me to actually do it.

What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
There are quite a few good ones that I really like. One of them would be Let It Snow. I just think it is a cute song.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!
No, can't say that I ever hear any. I celebrate Christmas so I don't know any songs about other holidays. Besides the one Adam Sandler did, I don't know it but I have heard it before.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
No, I do not sing in front of other people. I do no know if I would be comfortable enough to do it.

- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.
First up...in no particular order...Jingle Bells.
Second...Let It Snow
Third...It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Fourth...Jingle Bell Rock
Lastly...The Grinch song.

My favourite Daily Prophet article is always wizarding crimes. I know what you're thinking. A bit of an odd behaviour for a Ravenclaw, no? I just always find it fascinating to read about the stupid things people do and how utterly surprised they can be when (and if) they get caught.

My favourite holiday song isn't usually one that I hear about a lot. It's Carol of the Bells. I think part of the reason is it's so catchy and I spent so much time practicing it to sing the super-quick parts. ALso it's not one you generally hear on radios and things around the holidays and if you do, or when you do, it's just instrumental without the lyrics. Don't get me wrong, those are just as beautiful as far as renditions go.

So I was thinking about Carols or songs that aren't Christmasy and there is one. Again, I wonder how many Howlers I might get about this but... it's the Hanukkah song. Yes that one. The one that is sung by Adam Sandler. It's a great song and I listen to it every year! In the same vein, I also listen to his Thanksgiving song. Not technically a winter holiday and something that's only celebreated in North America (as far as I know) but it's worth a chuckle.

I have never gone caroling in my whole, long life. However, if it wasn't just me I think I would be willing to give it a try. You see, I have a terrible singing voice (and voice in general?) and I would hate to be in a group of just 2 people or so. But a choir like those goblins from Hogsmeade? I think I would be down for that. At least once, anyway!

OKAY! 5 Carols to sing to my hogmates! Carol of the Bells, The Boar Head's Carol, Jingle Bells (Hogwarts edition), Peppermint Winter, and Christmas at Hogwarts.

- Which article in this issue was your favorite and why?

My favorite article in this issue was definitely "Wizarding Science." Why you may ask? 7 words: Grandma got run over by a reindeer . But in a more serious still isn't really that serious tone, I love how they use 'wizarding science' to create a hat that makes you not have to listen to carols. Of all inventions that had to be created using magic, it was this one I'm also definitely not bias since Tati is my friend

- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)

My least favorite holiday song is definitely "Baby It's Cold Outside." This song is extremely disturbing to me for... reasons . To me it's about this girl being persuaded by someone to stay with them even though they WANT to leave. Throughout the entire song she's listing reasons for why she should leave and that she can leave and this guy is coming up with pathetic counterarguments. But it's just my opinion.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!

I don't often listen to any other carols that celebrate a different holiday, but I still do! I've heard some Hanukkah songs- "Hanukkah O Hanukkah," "Come Light the Menorah," and "I Am A Latke." The can't clearly remember the first two, but I loooooooved the thrid. It took the point of view of a latke waiting to be cooked and eaten for Hanukkah

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?

I've never gone caroling, only seen it. I doubt I would want to go caroling, I hate singing (yes I do know that it has it's benefits but you can't change my mind) and I'm an introvert in real life, so I would feel extremely awkward if I showed up at people's houses/neighborhoods to sing to them.

- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.

Yes concert time! Hmm...let's see... I think I'll go with these:

1. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer
-You can't go wrong with a song about Santa doing a hit-and-run!
2. Nuttin For Christmas
-I wonder why someone made a song about a little kid being so naughty that he got 'nuttin' for Christmas...
3. 12 Pains of Christmas
-This song is so wrong in so many ways
4. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
-Ah misunderstandings that children have...
5. Christmas at Ground Zero
-This song is also wrong in so many ways
-This song is way too disturbing

(I'm sorry to whoever has to read my disturbing discussion post)

- Which article in this issue was your favorite and why?

Wizarding Crimes. I'm Christian and that article made me actually laugh out loud because it's funny and true. But it also is sad, because Herod did kill shook many innocent babies. So many moms lost their child, some perhaps their first child. The article is funny, but it does bring to light many things that I think are often overlooked in the Christmas story in the bible.

- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)

Believe by Josh Groban (Polar Express) The lyrics captivated me and that movie is a classic in our family every Christmas, so I hear that song and it takes me back to being small and curled up in pajamas with hot chocolate. If it comes on the radio you betcha I tell everyone to be quiet and then turn it up.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!

No, not really. We mostly listen to the radio, which plays only Christmas.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?

Yes! I LOVE singing so it's a favorite thing for me. Our church takes our youth group around to the local community with a lot of seniors who can't get out. That's where some shut-ins live. We go up and knock and then sing to them. We need to stop using the same songs over and over though.

Then I went with a homeschool group and we literally walked all across our town and stopped at houses people recommended. "Oh, she's going through a hard time." "Her son is on my son's team and she's always really nice." "He always watches the bus and the children to make sure they're safe." Etc. It was beautiful. We didn't have a sheet of music in front of us, we faked it and it was fun.

I really loved Economy: The Orphan Tree. I just thought it was really sweet, and I love how excitable it comes across. It really encapsulated Christmas cheer for me.
- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
My least favourite song is definitely Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, I've just heard it far too many times! It especially sucks because it's my managers favourite Christmas song, so I get to hear it on repeat every Christmas. My favourite Christmas song is probably anything by Michael Buble, I'm a sucker for those lovely soft vocals. It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas is a good example of a soothing Christmas song in my opinion.
- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
I haven't been caroling, but I think I would really enjoy it, provided we snag some decent Christmas songs! I love singing, I might have to convince the musical theatre group I'm in to go sing some carols this year! I’m sure some of them would be just as excited me, we’d just have to be careful not to annoying anyone too much.
- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.
White Winter Hymnal, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (What a cute song!), Last Christmas. A nice collection of weird and wonderful Christmas songs.

My favorite this month was ‘From the3 Kitchen’ by Serenity Dragoon. I never realized that this was once a savory dish. I just always thought it was a dessert and the song only added to that misconception. I wonder if there is a recipe out there somewhere in the land of the Internet that combines the aspects of both savory and sweet so we could have a Figgy Pudding that is like a one course dinner. I wonder do figs go with lamb?

- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)

I like most Christmas and Holiday carols so much it is hard to choose a favorite. Some are good for religious reasons and others are just fun to sing. They all get me in a good mood. I love hearing them played in stores as background music. I feel it gets people into a kinder place. If I had to pick a favorite it might be ‘Do You Hear What I Hear’. It is beautiful peaceful and yet haunting at the same time.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season, do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!

Off-hand the only non- Christmas song I can think of is ‘I Have A Little Dreidel’ and Santa Lucia. The latter I only know in Swedish though. I learned it as a child and it has stuck with me all these years. I used to know more songs in Swedish and other languages but they have faded with the years.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?

I have and I have had fun doing so many times. When I used to visit my grandparents on Long Island, we used to carol around their block. We always were received well and with hot chocolate and cookies. As a young adult my friends and I used to drive to friends’ houses and carol them since it was too far to walk lol. But we were again always welcomed with refreshment and good times. One time we didn’t even get out of the vehicles just opened our windows and sang from the cars!

- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.

Hmm, five songs to carol with at Hogwarts?. I would want a combination of songs that people would enjoy so let’s see. In no particular order they would be: Jingle Bells, Grandma Got Run Over By A Hippogriff, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Silent Night and O’ Come All Ye Joyful. A nice blend of songs with some being modern, some magical and some traditional. Music for all!

Whatever songs one chooses to carol with, it is really not the songs but the spirit and joy that one sends and imparts to family, friends, and even strangers that is the most important thing.

What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)

My favorite is Bing Crosby/David Bowie - Little Drummer Boy. Absolutely love the way they sing together. I remember seeing it for the first time on the Bing Crosby Christmas Special. I make sure to listen to that every year.

Bing also features in another of my faves - White Christmas. Just something about this song and the way he sings it that I just can't get enough of.

The other song I need to hear every year - Blue Christmas by Elvis - yes THIS version. I think his voice lends itself so well to this song.

Some other songs are from a record I had a kid. I don't think too many folks are going to know these. The group who sang them were called the Peter Pan Singers. The songs include Santa Claus' Birthday; There's a Hole in My Christmas Stocking, Momma Santa's Surprise; Christmas Mountain among others. Have so many happy memories of listening to this with my family while decorating the house.

As a child - I wasn't fond of The Christmas Song. I don't know - but it's grown on me. Can't really think of a Christmas song I don't like. There are some versions of songs, but not really a song itself.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!

I can (and do) listen to every Christmas song I can find during the holiday season LOL. Mixed in I sometimes hear a few of the popular Hanukkah tunes. I don't know of any carols for other holidays. If someone was able to point me to some carols for the other holidays - I'd be interested in hearing them.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
No - I've never gone caroling. Can't say I know anyone who ever did it. It wasn't something that people did where I grew up. I don't think I'd do it today though. To many crazy people out there.

- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols

Hmmmmm - let's see. I would include

Silent Night
Oh Holy Night
White Christmas
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
I'll Be Home For Christmas

Wizarding Crimes By DominicanSr- I loved the tie-in with the Biblical story and it was was very well written.

- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
I really like all Christmas carols and songs. Pachelbel's Canon in D Major is one of my favorites. In chatting, I told our organist at church how much I liked it, and last Sunday, he played it for the Offertory hymn- it was beautiful.

- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!
At Easter I hear the Hallelujah Chorus at church- This song will give me chills every time I hear it.

- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
I used to go caroling with church and school groups as a child. Some houses would offer hot chocolate as a treat.

My favorite holiday song is probably I'll Be Home for Christmas. I think it's mostly because I have a very beautiful performance that I love to watch and re-watch of this song, performed by Lea Michelle and Jonathan Groff. They're so sweet and I love their friendship and stage chemistry <3
But I also just love the song - for example, Michael Buble has a fantastic cover for it!

For me there's actually no holiday season during this time of year, only Hanukkah, and I don't have carols I listen to really. I did try very hard to celebrate Christmas this year as much as I could wthout it being a full holiday here, so I listened to a lot of Christmas carols to be in the right headset ^_^

I've never gone caroling (again - it's just not a thing here), but I suppose that if a group of friends or family wanted to go caroling and it was an acceptable thing to do, then yeah - I would have loved to join! To sing quietly and not stand out too much, but still have fun and be heard somewhat XD

Magical carols to sing at Hogwarts would be the BEST! I would sing whatever carol Mr. Flitwick told us to sing, despite not knowing any of the words 😂
Though if possible, I would have learned the words in advance and definitely participated in some Hogwarts caroling. That would be such a dream come true! <3

Which article in this issue was your favorite and why?
I liked Wizarding Crimes. It would be wonderful if when me made a resolution that something would happen to ensure we are successful. I loved the blurb about the cigarettes going missing. Expanding that to everyone's needs would be outstanding.
- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
I love O Holy Night. It reminds me of the reason for the season. We get so caught up in trivial things like decorating and shopping, that we forget the reason behind it all. It's a beautiful reminder of why a lot of us celebrate Christmas.
- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!
I just listen to whatever happens to be on the radio. I don't recall any songs relating to other holidays being played, It would be interesting to search for some and give them a listen. You never know what you will find. It might also teach us more about other traditions.
- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
I did once. I was about 10 and out church went caroling. It was fun...but to cold to be outside for long. By the time we got back to the parrish center I was frozen. They had hot drinks and food to warm us up...but I never went back out caroling again.
- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.
I would pick:
1. O Holy Night, 2. Coventry Carol, 3. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
4. Frosty the Snowman, 5. Silent Night

My favorite is probably "From the Kitchen" because that recipe sounds delicious and I want to try my hand at making it lol.
- What is your favorite holiday song? Why? (Or if you don't have a favorite, perhaps let us know which one is your LEAST favorite.)
I'm not a fan of most holiday music, honestly. It's overplayed here for months in retail stores and drives me nuts. There is one song, I do really like but it's super controversial because someone decided to give it a meaning that wasn't the intent of the writer and gave it a bad name and some one else decided to change the lyrics and rewrite it, which kind of upset me, because the original was wonderful. It's from one of my favorite musical scenes that gets me giddy happy every time I watch it.
- Christmas isn't the only holiday of the season - do you listen to any carols around this time of year that celebrate a different holiday? Tell us about them!
I actually love the song for New Years, Auld Lang Syne. I really enjoy the message from it.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
...
For auld lang syne
...
And surely you will buy your cup
And surely I'll buy mine
I think we all could use reminding of this line more often, throughout the year.
- Have you ever gone caroling? What was it like? If you haven't, would you want to?
I've never gone but I was on the choir in the church when I was young and we did carols every Sunday for a couple months before the holiday...I think that's where I got burnt out on them, to be honest.
- Alright, concert time! Tell us what five carols you would pick to sing to your fellow Hogwarts peers. They can be Muggle carols, wizard carols, or even made up carols.
Oh man, I can't think of Five of them that I can even tolerate LOL. Definitely Baby It's Cold Outside. Oh and the Hanukkah song from Adam Sandler because of entertainment value. Maybe the New Years' song can get thrown in too. Let it Snow might be another good one to add in, I actually used that as my theme for my Christmas decor for my house (ironic considering I live in Florida now and would never want to move back where it snows again lol).

Wizarding crimes was by far my favourite article this month. I loved the spin that was put on it, and couldn't help but giggle as I read along.

It comes as no surprise to most people when I say I am not the most Christmas-loving person in the world. My favourite Christmas song however, is probably Last Christmas or Fairy Tale of New York. I've always liked both these songs, and they are the only songs that really put me in a Christmas mood, other than the traditional Christmas hymns.

Our church only ever sang carols for a couple of weeks before Christmas, and our school either focused on a pantomime or a carol concert in alternating years, so unless you were participating in some form or other, you were only ever required ro sing the traditional carols, and they saw no need for practice.

I don't celebrate anything else at Christmas, umless New Year counts, and I'm not really a singer, so i doubt you would get me carolling anywhere. However I do play instruments and tend to have a little play and make some cash at New Year.

If I were to do my own, I would include Accio Christmas, Silent Night, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, Last Christmas, and Flying home for Christmasz a twist on the Chris Rea classic. I'd probably veer more towards instruments instead though, and I think a Hogwarts pantomime would be hilarious.

I don't have a favorite holiday song, but I definitely have some least favorites each year. Which one that is fully, wholly and completely depends on how often I hear them, There's this one radio station in my area that only plays christmas songs basically all of december and it absolutely drives me nuts.
We don't celebrate other holidays in December that involve songs, so I haven't much to add here.
Caroling is also a foreign concept for me, but it is one that I would definitely try! If only I had a voice that sounded even just a bit better, less shrill. But I guess I am saved by the fact that it is not common practice here, so I have never had to sing in public.

If I had to give a christmas concert of sorts, I'd sing all the cheesy christmas songs. Please plan it early in the season though, so I still like 'em.
I would probably do Last Christmas, It's beginning to look a lot like christmas, Driving home for christmas, Do they know it's christmas and All I want for Christmas is you.
But before you would ever be able to get me on a stage voluntarily, you would need to arrange for some pretty hefty autotune or hearing protection for everyone listening. And some backup singers in christmassy outfits for an added bonus of course.
