Daily Prophet October Official Discussion

One breath in... one breath out... Remembering to take a step back and breathe is a crucial part of taking care of yourself. This month, our Daily Prophet writers took it upon themselves to remind us how important it is to regularly engage in self-care. We often get so focused on others or what is happening around us that we often forget that we exist too. Before we dive into this month's discussion, take a moment to become aware of yourself. Breathe in... breathe out... Now that you're all relaxed, come tell us your thoughts on this issue and share how you perform self-care! In case you missed last month's issue of the Daily Prophet, you can find it here.

- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?

I have to say my favorite article was in the kitchen...I really like granola bars. As far as the topic of self care, I think it is a really important topic. A lot of people are too busy with life, myself included, or too lazy, myself included, to exercise and eat right. Sometimes it is just a hassle. I do not perform enough self care to myself. I am always worried about my son and his needs that I just forget that I need help too.I like to sit in a quiet area and read or meditate. Relax feeling the breeze outside and listening to nature run its course. It is something I do not do enough of. Having kids can make it difficult to find the time to take care of yourself. My advice for parents would be to take turns taking care of the kids for a couple of hours while the other parent spends that time taking a bubble bath. If you are a single parent, like myself, I don't have a lot of time to myself so I tend to do it when he is in the shower or at school. Even when he plays outside, I may be mindful of what he is doing but I try to drink some tea and read a book. If I could apparate anywhere in the world it would be somewhere in a cabin on a mountain next to a waterfall. Just so I could hear the water and relax and meditate in natures beauty.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
From the kitchen - new recipes are always welcome. I also like chocolate.

- What does self-care mean to you?
Maintaining one's self to be in good health.

How do you perform self-care?
I exercise and I try to eat good foods, but unfortunately I tend to eat too much sugar.

- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I can sit and read a book. Losing myself in another place takes my mind off real life worries. I also exercise; I find that relieves stresss.

- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
Take care of both mind and body. Keep both active daily.

- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
I guess Italy. It's a beautiful country. I love the architecture and the food. Maybe to the Cinque Terre or a peaceful lakeside village.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
It's a tie between Economy and Politics.

- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
I believe self-care is a way to keep yourself on check on all aspects of your life. I perform self-care by eating mostly unprocessed food, doing activities that bring me pleasure and spending time with my family.

- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you? I have random skincare time every now and then, where I take extra care of my skin by exfoliating and doing a mask. Usually, I feel very relaxed afterwards.

- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care? Spending time with your loved ones is amazing for your mood and can turn a bad day into a great one.

- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why? Bali. I love nature and these kinds of places always recharge me. Bali has forests, waterfalls, beaches and the food seems to be very healthy.

From the kitchen - nothing beats chocolate lol, although not a fan of granola.
Self-Care is to look after yourself, eat right and exercise, I'm not so good at the exercise part, after spending 6 hours on my feet rushing around, exercise is the last thing I want to do lol but I try to eat well so it's not so bad.
I do Diamond Painting with is a big stress relief or a colouring app I have on my IPad, and believe it or not but playing Battlefield 4 on the Xbox is good too even though I can't do it lol.
I don't give tips because everyone is different so it's about finding what works best for you. I think as long as you eat right and stay as active as possible then you are doing a good job.
Greece, I was so relaxed there and it's a beautiful country. We stayed by the pool mostly because mum can't walk far ut it was ok, because even just doing that was relaxing, watching people swimming or playing volleyball in the pool, reading a book or taking a nap, it might sound boring to other people but to me it was heaven lol.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
My favorite article was Wizarding Crimes. I liked reading about how such a simple mistake when casting a spell could cause so much trouble.

- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
To me self- care means doing things for myself like eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, getting some exercise, and sometimes just relaxing and doing something I enjoy like cuddling with my cat while watching a good TV show or reading a book.

- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I do things to help keep myself stress free but I can’t think of anything unusual that I’ve done.

- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
Don’t forget that self – care should include both your mind and body. So, don’t just take care of one take care of both. You need to exercise and eat well for your body but you also need to do things to keep your mind healthy as well as reduce stress. Stress can affect both you mental and physical health so don’t forget to take some time to relax.

- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
I think I would pick a nice tropical island like maybe Hawaii. There are plenty of places to hike and enjoy nature and get some exercise as well as beaches to relax on. Sitting on a nice beach listening to the ocean can be very relaxing. Its also a good place to go for a walk or even a swim.

My favorite article was Aunt Edna's. The advice & tips it contained looked really useful, I've already started to make a calendar of self care events to look forward to.

Self care for me often comes with extremely quiet days. I'm naturally quite introverted so come the weekend after a busy working week sometimes I just need to sit in silence for a while. I also find being active helps, but it's always a challenge to get back into the routine before it becomes more enjoyable & natural.

In the terms of out of the ordinary, quite often at work I find that taking on extra work is a type of self care. My day job can be hectic and is very male dominated. The extra work usually gives me a chance to be in a different environment with a different vibe, and while it's more to balance the pros significantly outweigh the cons.

My top self care tip would be to know yourself & what works for you. If you choose not to do something you had been wanting to do, look for the good instead of being yourself up. For example, if you turn down an evening out at the last minute as you're exhausted, learn to see that you've prioritised your energy instead of having "failed".

I've seen someone else say this place but my stress free go to place is Greece. I love the relaxed vibe, and have a favorite place that my family have been going to for decades. We go in a couple of weeks and I can't wait!

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
AUNT EDNA'S. Interesting ideas about self care.
- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
Taking care of your body, mind/emotions and spirit. I take things one day at a time. Worrying will get you no where. All it will do is add stress to your life. Relax. Take a long hot soak in a bathtub with relaxing music. Turn lights and electronics off at least an hour before bedtime. Find the perfect temperature for you-so you are neither hot of cold. Curl up with a good book. Eat healthy. Limit junk foods. Exercise! Get enough sleep. It really makes a difference on how you feel the next day..and even the next few days.
- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I had read about Feng Shui and decided to try it. It was a waste of time and money.
- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
Try not to worry. It does not help and stresses your body more. Take things one day at a time. You don't know what will happen a week from now. Don't worry about it. Deal with things as they come. All problems are just setbacks that you can overcome.
- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
New Zealand. A beautiful country with wonderful people. There are stunning areas in parks with waterfalls that you could watch and listen to for a long time. Very relaxing.

This issue of the Daily Prophet couldn't have come at a better time. I've just started my second year of a-levels and it's a super stressful period. I've been pouring some of my energy into self-care. Every Sunday, I spend the day chilling. No college work, no essays, nothing that requires brain work (except the puzzles on HEX). I spend my Sundays spending time on here, playing games, watching movies and TV shows. It helps me to rewind from the stressful week and to prepare myself for the next week.

My favourite articles in the issue were Wizarding Crimes, Politics and Guest Writer. Wizarding Crimes was quite funny and enjoyable. Politics and Guest Writer made me feel like I wasn't alone in the world. They both reminded me to spend time on self-care and that I'm not the only person stressing and worrying. It was good to hear that reassurance.

This may not sound out of the ordinary to most people, but when I was depressed I was told to spend more time outside and to experience the world. I usually prefer to stay at home, wrapped in blankets, so this was unusual and different for me. Getting out there and practising mindfulness really helped to improve my mood. I still practice this type of self-care today.

To truly reap the benefits of self-care, you need to forget about all the stresses in your life. You can't enjoy a movie or an episode of your favourite TV show when you're constantly reminding yourself of all the work you have to do. My tip would be to do as much as possible before your planned self-care time so when that time rolls around you can boldly say, 'I have deserved this'. Then you can fully relax and enjoy your self-care time.

If I could apparate anywhere in the world it would be to the most remote island that no human has ever encountered. I would just sit under a leafy tree in the shade, enjoying the gentle breeze, the soft sounds of the ocean, relishing in the amazingly vibrant blue and golden colours.

1. which article was your favorite issue and why
I really enjoyed From the Kitchen because the granola bars sounds so good. I admittedly don’t eat a lot of healthy food due to lack of self-control over yummy and bad for you things but the granolas sounded so good and I am planning on making them soon!

2. what does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
Self-care to me means just doing things for you to make you feel happy and healthy. For my self-care I used to just dance around my room along to music, a fun way to get some exercise. I can’t do that now since I live in an apartment with thin walls and floors but I walk daily, another of my favorite things.

3. have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I’m not sure if this is considered out of ordinary but I used to go to a float spa twice a month. Just floating in a pod of salt water for an hour with no sight and sound was amazing but unfortunately I could no longer afford them so I had to stop.
And it worked out great for me and was nice while it lasted.

4. what is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
If anyone hasn’t done the float spas yet I highly recommend it! There is nothing like it but unfortunately I can not afford such luxuries since moving into my own apartment.

5. if you could apostate anywhere in the world to stay stress- free for a while where would you travel? Why?
I would travel to either Italy or Hawaii. Italy because I have always wanted to visit and I’d also love to visit Hawaii.

My favorite article in this issue was the EXPOSE by DominicanSr. It was well written, entertaining and informative. I actually have a second cousin named Calliope!

To me, self-care is more about taking care of your mind and emotional state. To take care of my mind, I try to do puzzles, read and meditate as much as I can. Even though there are things on Hex that do stress me, I find it really helps me to retain equilibrium in my attitude towards life.

I think one of the things I have done in the past (but not recently) is to go to a cemetery to meditate. They are usually in a beautiful place around here and very peaceful. It helped me get into a ‘Zen’ state of mind very easily.

Gentle exercise is a key to self-care. It stretches your mind and body. It also removes you monetarily from your day to day environment, especially if it is outdoors.

I would apparate to the woods of my childhood. I remember being able to shut everything out there and just enjoy being. Back then, I would have taken a book to read and a pear to enjoy. I would like to do the same now.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
My favorite article was the From The Kitchen recipe. I love granola. I think it probably came from my childhood years when my mother would make us eat Grape Nuts cereal . A simply awful cereal for a child but when she would leave the kitchen we would add various things to it like honey, peanut butter , brown sugar and bananas or apples. So the closer to candy, the better it was for us. I naturally then enjoy most granolas especially those that are candyish but healthy.
- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
To me it means taking care of the whole package both body and mind. I try to not stress myself with things I can't change or let others dictate my emotional well being.
- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I have tried meditation, mud baths, essential oils, playing the drums and hikes into the woods around my home. Meditation did not really work for me nor do the essential oils (I will not tell my wife that) and the mud baths were kind of nice to begin with however I began to wonder what the mud could be concealing rofl. The walks seem to work well as long as the weather is good.Playing the drums is by far the best for me. I have been playing since I was 5 years old and they have become an extension of me for lack of a better description.
- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
We are all different. Find your comfort spot, what makes you happy and build on that. It is not all about eating greens and tofu or joining a gym.
- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
I think I would apparate to a tropical island in the Hawaiian isles . I have never been to any of them but I love the thought of just sitting on the beach and listening to the ocean and walking into nature to simply try to take it all in.

My favorite article was Guest Writer! There were a lot of great tips and suggestions for self-care. Also, I needed a reminder that it's okay to say no, because that's really hard for me. I'm a people-pleaser, and I don't want to upset anyone but sometimes I have to risk that if it benefits me in the long run.

Self-care to me means taking care of yourself and putting yourself first. A lot of people think that self-care is selfish, and in a sense it is, but it's not a negative type of selfish. We get so caught up in others, trying to fix their problems, trying to please them, that we tend to forget that we are important, too. I perform self-care by listening to my favorite songs, journaling, or just allowing myself to feel all of the emotions I have been suppressing.

I can't think of anything out of the ordinary I have practiced as self-care.

My tip to others who are looking to do some self-care would be to feel. Allow yourself to really feel, well, your feelings. Don't try to bottle them up or ignore them. If you are hurting, then just sit and allow yourself to hurt, no matter how painful it is. If you need to cry, then cry, because you deserve to release the emotions inside of you and bottling them up can be disastrous. However, don't wallow in those feelings for too long! Once you feel better, even if it's just temporarily, move on and press forward.

I would Apparate to Hawaii! I've never been but I love the beach and the beaches there look breathtaking. Turquoise is my favorite color, and I've seen pictures of the water there and I'm sure it's a very relaxing place! I would take a book to read and my ukulele, because hello! The ukulele originated from Hawaii and so it'd be pretty neat to play it there.

- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
Self-care means trying to improve your quality of life. For me, this means not pushing myself past my physical limits, and trying to keep clean and healthy even when all I want to do is hide in bed.

- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
Er, not really anything out of the ordinary. I've tried a bit of mindfulness, but I can't take it seriously.

- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
Hard pill to swallow: self-care isn't just pampering yourself and ordering stuff online. It's also disciplining yourself and being accountable to yourself to get better long term.

- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
I guess some big resort. The kind with everything included - meals made, rooms cleaned, room service, activities onsite. I stress over every little thing, so if I could go somewhere where all I had to stress about was my outfit in the morning and where to go eat, it would relax me enormously.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?As always the Crime. They are so funny really Poor old smelly Boupher, it really wasn't his fault and has any one even considered the fact he may not be able to smell anything? That is a real medical issue with some people and may explain his appearance to some extent, rather the jail he needs to go to St Mugos for a through exam and healing if needed
- What does self-care mean to you? Taking care of myself physically mentally and spiritually How do you perform self-care? I try to eat healthy well made meals using fresh ingredients not canned or processed, I get what exercise I can I go to physical therapy 3x a week and I swim everyday weather permitting, I give myself facials and I long hot baths in my jetted tub or I use a shower bomb when there's no time for a bath (I love lavender so calming ) take an hour everyday and just relax no tv no reading just soft music generally Litz or Brahms occasionally Mozart
- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free?Yes
What did you try and how did it work out for you? I used to go Hang Gliding up there nothing matters it's just peaceful and calm landing is a bit tense but I just folded up and go back and do it again. It was wonderful but I can't do it anymore.
- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care? Think about what you find most relaxing , what has always made you feel good about yourself
- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Antarctica Why? I love the cold and I always wanted to go there for some odd reason seems remote and not a lot of tourists would choose to go there I don't think they would anyway

My favorite article from this issue, would have to be the wizarding crimes. The reason why I like that sort of stuff. I mean who doesn’t like a good mystery to find out if they actually did it or not. Self-care means a lot to me, if you don’t take care of yourself then how are you going to do all the things that you want to do. The way I perform self-care is that I take out time for myself. I usually take a day and not talk or see any one especially after a week of work. I live out in the country so it’s easy for me to just sit out on the front porch with my music and just relax. I have not tried anything out of the ordinary. I probably would try something if it would help me out. The one thing that really lets me relax is to listen to music. This is a hard question on one tip. I would have to say that my coworker got stressed one month at work, she would let everything bother her for no reason and she finally let everything go. So I guess it would be just to let that thing go whatever is bothering you because it helped her. Where would I Apparate? That's an easy question my favorite place to go is Hawaii. I always feel relaxed when we go there. I mean you have the beach and ocean to look at and the people there are so nice. Plus, your away from home for a few days.

- Which article was your favorite in this issue? Why?
I especially liked the Wizarding Science article. I'm in a somewhat related field, so I'm always interested in new develpoments in Healing.
- What does self-care mean to you? How do you perform self-care?
It can be something as small as listening to a song or re-reading a favorite book. I also like to eat chocolate, which has the added bonus of being a Dementor deterrent. I pet my cat. I try to take some time to cook a more elaborate dish at least once a week because I enjoy cooking and it is also more healthy usually than the faster alternatives. I try to sleep in whenever possible.
- Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress-free? What did you try and how did it work out for you?
I once tried the beauty/home spa route by trying one of those mask things but that didn't work out too well. It just made me impatient and bad tempered.
- What is one tip that you have learned or would give to someone else that is looking to do some self-care?
Listen to your body, listen to your thoughts. Do what feels right for YOU.
- If you could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, where would you travel? Why?
I'd apparate to a sunny clearing in a deep forest. I'd maybe bring a chair or a blanket and a book. No distractions, no people, just the cound of birds and insects and fresh air.

My favorite article was “From the Kitchen”. Those honey sweetened chocolate granola bars sound delicious. I will definitely have to try them out sometime. Self-care means making sure that you are okay, mentally, physically and emotionally. Sometimes that means going to bed earlier, or taking a short break from something that is stressing you out. It can also mean actively trying to decrease your stress levels with relaxation, or tea, or anything else that helps you de-stress. I have tried many different things to keep myself stress free, including doing assignments and projects in advance, spacing out my work hours with numerous short breaks and going to bed early when I feel particularly exhausted. One tip I would give to someone looking for some self-care is that sleep can do wonders for your mental health, even if it is only a fifteen minute nap, your body will still benefit from the recharging time. I would also make sure that you can find a cool, dark place that does not have the pressures of lights or noise where your sole focus is taking care of yourself. If I could apparated anywhere in the world to stay stress-free I would choose the Bahamas. I like the beach and I could just lay there with a good book and rest.

Yayy I love this topic!! Self Care is one of the things I'm currently obsessed with - have been for quite a while, but I still find new forms and new activities that promote self care, so I don't get tired of it XD

My favorite article this month was the Economy article, since I frequently look for ideas for self care that don't cost too much, and this article spoke directly to my interest. I also really liked the guest writer article, because it was full of self care ideas that we can each take and adopt ^_^

As I said, I am a bit obsessed with self care. It started at the time that I first started my (first) professional job, and was living alone and independent. I realized that aside from work and doing house chores, I basically lived for the weekends and I didn't like it. So I began looking up all sort of different types of self care activities: adding an exercise routine to my week for a healthier body, looking up interesting events and such for some social self care, adding activities that were both fun and healthy to my life.

Slowly I started branching into different types of self care, doing something else every time, trying to find the things that fit me best and just keeping my day to day life interesting. For example, I did a free online course that gave me some deeper understanding into a field I was interested in. I recently did a drawing project where I learned a bunch of cute doodles and used them in holiday cards for my family. And I finally had the courage to try some skincare acts of self care - still finding what works for me there, but it's something that I've been fearing even trying, because there are just so many products ut there...

I think the best tip for self care is to try different things. Of course you shouldn't force yourself to try something if you really don't want to, but often we have things that we just never thought about trying. Or like in my case, there are things I want to try but feared doing wrong so I just avoided it altogether for a long time. I think that giving a chance to different activities is definitely worth it, and even if you don't adopt it into your permanent self care routine, at least you'll feel good for trying

If I could Apparate anywhere in the world to stay stress-free for a while, I think that would have to be Ireland. Having traveled there, I was surprised at how relaxed everyone was in the countryside. It's amazing, but if I stopped anyone in Ireland to ask a question, they would stop everything to answer me (one woman even walked me to where I was asking directions to). So many friendly people, good laughs, green everywhere (it's seriously beautiful there!), that is for sure a place I could relax at ^_^

Which article was your favorite in this issue? Wizard Crimes was really interesting and funny. Why? I thought the issue was going to be something awful in the wizarding world, but it turned out that this poor unkempt man wanted to smell good for his date. I can understand that but the old wizard tried to perform a spell to make him smell good. He goofed up the spell and it made him smell horrendous. I had to laugh when he went to meet his date and she passed out from the stench of the man. In the end it turned out alright.

What does self-care mean to you? It means to care for yourself on the outside and inside. Take a shower, brush your teeth and wear clean clothes. I go visit the doctor for a medical check-up. I try to eat healthy food and exercise daily. Try to take time for yourself and relax with friends and family. I tried to get a good night sleep that’s about or near 8 hours if possible. I need to also feed my spirit and I do that by going to church.

Have you ever tried anything out of the ordinary to keep yourself stress free? What did you try and how did it work out for you? I didn’t try anything out of the ordinary to keep myself stress free. I know that swimming relaxes me so that works for me.
