Publications Management is Hiring!

Publications Management is an area that not only helps in the upkeep of the site's official publications, but also keeps The Newsstand going. It has grown over the last couple of years to include more than just editing the publications. We now hold our own contests, discussions, and even have our own incentive item! Need help and advice where publications are concerned? We're here for you.

Some of the duties of a Publications Mod include:
1. Proofread articles for The Daily Prophet, The Quibbler, and The Wizarding Wireless Network.
2. Help prepare, host, and wrap up the monthly events in The Newsstand.
3. Moderate The Newsstand.
4. Help users with their queries.

If this is an area of HEX that interests you... well, you're in luck! We're looking to add a couple of individuals to our wonderful team. We only require that you have a passion for publications and are ready to bring some more fun to The Newsstand!

Do you think you fit the bill? Great! Just complete the below form and send it in!

Task 1:
Edit the following piece of writing (mark your changes in #a464a3, please):
Quote:
By day, the ministry of magic appears to be the perfect example of law enforcement, ensuring that witches and wizards uphold the laws, dealing with emergencies that threaten the safety and secrecy of both the wizarding and Muggle worlds, and punishing wrongdoers. Except for the odd disaster, everything seems to run like tight-laced clockwork. By night however the Ministry comes alive with the very activities that you never would suspect.

That's right. Take, for example, that wizard with the boring black robes, neatly trimmed beard, and pompous spectacles who drones on and on in meetings all day is found playing with Muggle objects - muggle children's object, nonetheless - all night!

I had been at the Ministry conducting an interview with one of those dull, bureaucratic types for an oh-so-interesting article, on imported scales and phials. It was late in the afternoon, and many employees were heading home at the same time I was trying to leave. If you are familiar with my dismal sense of direction, perhaps it is needless to say that I became all turned around in the crowd and found myself on Level 5 - which was only a level away from where I had been. Clearly, I was no where near the exit.

So, I wandered around for a good forty five minutes trying to find my way out. At long last, I stumbled across the atrium. But instead of being still and quiet with the busy workday over, it was alive with the bustle of Ministry employees doing... what, I didn't exactly know. Lingering and watching as I wandered around the perimeter, I saw one youn witch with an incredibly long and skinny orange balloon - not one of those magical ones that inflates itself and floats about, but a boring Muggle balloon. Then she began twisting and bending it. Suddenly, it popped! Undeterred, she grabbed another one, blew it up, and began twisting it again. Before I knew it, she had a balloon-shaped animal, perhaps a unicorn or centaur. The handful of other witches and wizards watching her clapped and giggled with glee.

In a different part of the atrium, a small crowd was gathered around a table. The witches and wizards, closest to it were sticking their fingers into little pots of paint and then streaking them across paper! They didn't seem to be making any discernible pitures, but they were certainly having fun… and making a mess. One wizard didnt seem the least bit concerned that he had splatters of yellow paint down the front of both his black robes, and long grey beard. Through the chatter and laughter, I heard one witch call what they were doing 'finger painting'. Why muggle children are amused by this particular form of play is beyond me. Perhaps it is because they like making Out of curiosity, I had sticked my finger in the paint. It was rather cold, hard to clean off, and little crusted flecks remained on my skin for the next day or two

The final thing I observed was a group of Ministry employees - ranging from the heads of various departments to cleaning staff - gathered around the Atrium Fountain. In the water, their were little toy boats and small yellow birds. I asked one wizard what exactly they were, and he told me that they were called 'rubber ducks'. Now, your reporter has heard of tufted ducks long-tailed ducks and mallard ducks, but never a rubber duck. Nor had I seen one that was such an unnaturally bright yellow or that had eyes that big. But apparently they are quite popular, especially in the bath tub. I didn't question it but instead I quickly found my way out of the ministry.

I must tell you that I was supposed to write this article on imported scales and phials, but given the sights I saw as I tried to leave the Ministry, all thoughts of scales and phials were driven from my minds. My hope is that this article was at least equally as informative as that one would have been - and much informative. I will conclude by saying that next time I run into a ministry of Magic Employee, Ill never see them the same weigh again and won't be able to help imagining them holding a balloon with paint-covered hands watching a rubber duck float in circles.

Task 2:

Hmm. Debating if I should apply...

Can writers apply? Since I'm a Quibbler writer, does that make me invalid, or..?

For the editing portion, how do you want us to mark removed commas or sections that have things taken out of them?

@Tanzerclaire
Great question! Go ahead and use the same correction color (#a464a3), but mark removals as so:
Quote:
[removed]

If you wanted to be more specific, you could say [comma removed] or [word removed] or [section removed]. Just something that makes it clear you've done something there. Hope this helps!

For task three, does it have to be a fully coded post or is just the discussion prompts? Thanks, no need to tag.

@Rosie_may either is acceptable We don't expect you to go through the whole snippet and correct things that are already correct in one style, though. So if something is correct in American spelling, you don't have to correct it to British, as our writers use both

@LUNAtic12 If you want to show off your coding skills, go for it! But coding is not required.

Because for the second task, I made it fully coded, but I wasn't sure if I should do it for the third task.

For the contest, what would we put as the end date? Should we assume that the contest takes place in the month of August?

@Mark

You want us to do proofreading at an academic level, right? And do we need to state the words we corrected?

No need to tag, watching.

We do have some our own sort of guidelines, but I’d say it is similar to or the same as at an academic level. You don’t have to, but you are free to add it if you like!

What does "3 discussion prompts" mean?
Does that mean 3 questions for the discussion? Or does that mean you want 3 separate discussions?

I believe it means 3 questions(bullet points, if you will) on your proposed discussion, but don't quote me on that. That's just my interpretation

For that task, you’re just creating one discussion with at least three prompts/questions to guide users as they start discussing. Formatting it like our current discussions is perfectly fine .
