Dressed in all black, flashlight in hand, our master spy made their way into the darkened hall of the Ministry (no it wasn't me and no I didn’t acquire a press pass from the Daily Prophet's writer's room to gain access). For the past three weeks little blue thieves had been making their way into the dorms of the students at Hogwarts. They had been stealing anything sweet and, if they were confronted, sprayed a nasty paralysing mist at the unlucky witch, wix or wizard.

The Ministry claimed they knew nothing about the little creatures running havoc around Hogwarts at night, but this student thought different. After re-reading Alex Rider and buying a whole new set of clothes, they made their way to the Ministry with only one goal in mind. To find out what the Ministry was hiding.

For those of you who may not know, Alex Rider is a teenage spy. He is the star of the book series 'Alex Rider' by British author Anthony Horowitz. Alex is recruited by MI6 at the age of 14 after his uncle, Ian Rider, is killed on a mission gone wrong. Blackmailed into going undercover to take over for his uncle, the first book follows Alex as he saves school children all over the country with only the skills he was taught growing up and the fancy gadgets made for him by MI6's tech guru.

T a s k

Your task this month is to write a story about a student's adventure into the Ministry. How did they enter the Ministry? Did they really steal borrow a writer's press pass, or did they sneak in through a secret back entrance? Are these little blue creatures harmless little balls of fluff who only want some candy? Or are they evil little devils who want to steal all the world's sweeties for themselves? Are they a super spy like Alex Rider, breaking into the ministry and getting out again without being caught? Or do they have a number of close calls and get caught in the process of escaping? It is up to you.

- Entries are to be between 200 and 500 words long.
- All HEX terms and rules apply.

Love the idea! Just a few questions....

Does the story have to be a continuation of this, or any style we like?

Is it like a newspaper article, or a short story?

Does it have to be a canon HP character, or can we make our own?

Thanks for any feedback

@Emily-J Hey there, I'm glad you like the idea Your story does not have to be a continuation of the first post, you can start however you'd like. This is more like a short story and you can make your own character.

Our master spy wasn't as successful at getting into the Ministry of Magic as some of you were, even with their stolen acquired press pass. The student was out of luck, had detention and was still no closer to finding out what was causing all the candy related problems at Hogwarts.

Luckily for all students at Hogwarts, these six students were much more successful in their break in at the Ministry. A big congratulations to the lucky six who have won 1000 House Points each!

Thank you, and well done to the other winners! The contest was great fun!

Are we allowed to post our entries here, if we wish? I love reading what other people have written - there are so many talented people on HEX.

I'm kind of wondering this as well. Are all the stories going to be published somewhere? If not, could we post ours here? It sounds like a pretty nice idea. I'm curious about what other people did with the prompt.

Here's my entry - no-one's said we can't post them so I'm assuming we can. Do share yours, if you're happy to!

Maybe it wasn't the smartest idea in the world, but when you've shot your big mouth off and backed yourself into a corner, there's no graceful way out. Once Al had lifted a sardonic eyebrow and challenged, "So you reckon any idiot could break into the Ministry? Even an idiot like you?" there was nothing I could retort but, "Yes."

So here I was, in the stables at Hogwarts; rank hath its privileges, and the scion of Malfoy is entitled to keep his own mount. Looking just as incredulous as Al had done, my thestral curled his lip as I vaulted on to his bony back, swathed myself in my demiguise hair cloak and commanded, "Ministry of Magic! The Atrium!" It was only going one step further than Al's parents had done, a lifetime ago. Thestrals are supposed to be able to take you anywhere you ask, after all.

And Equuleus did. I have tried to forget the misery of that ride, my frozen limbs, chattering teeth, and aching...well, let's not dwell on that, except to say that several hours astride a thestral is definitely injurious to the male anatomy. I tried to concentrate on my cunning plan to infiltrate the Pest Advisory Board on level 4, convinced that there I would find the key to the blue plague at Hogwarts, but by the time Equuleus shot towards the subterranean building (I'm ashamed to admit I threw my arms around his neck and shut my eyes, so I still don't know how he traversed the solid concrete) my brain had seized up in sympathy with my suffering body.

Equuleus landed on the tiled atrium floor with a clatter of hooves. A thrill of triumph shot through me - I had done it! - until my thirsty steed abruptly plunged his nose into the Fountain of Magical Brethren. Arms and legs numb, I toppled slowly over his head with a mighty splash and the loss of my cloak, to the amazement of the doddering Nightwizard on security detail. I reckon the crash, and my startled shriek, woke him up.

I'd rather draw a veil over Headmistress McGonagall's withering lecture, the curtailment of my allowance and three nights' detention a week until the end of term. Most of all, l try to ignore Al's delighted reminiscences as he murmurs, "Any idiot could do it, you know – "

I did solve the mystery of the nocturnal raiders, incidentally. Not through any stunning display of ingenuity, sadly, but simply because Professor Hagrid heard me expostulating about it. He keeps a watchful eye on Al, probably all the more so because of my bestie's serpentine affiliations. "You oughtta pay more attention in yer Care o' Magical Creatures class, lads," he guffawed. "Them little critters is nuthin' more than overweight Cornish pixies! Some blitherin' eejit let 'em out in the Gryffindor Common Room an' they've invaded the rest o' the school. Keep yer goodies locked up an' they'll leave you be..."
