Chapter 20 ~ The Unexpected Surprise

"Alright guys, what’s our plan for the play?” Skye asked excitedly as she turned towards Alex and River.

“Umm… what about we do a mystery?” River exclaimed, thinking back to all the fun times they had solving mysteries at Hogwarts.

“Oh! Oh! I know! What if we go on some kind of adventure?!” Alex stated. He’d always love the idea of doing something spontaneous.

As Skye was thinking on what they could possibly do, a sudden idea came to her. “Hmmm, those are both good ideas! What if we each write our own and place it in a hat? Then we can pick from it?”

“That’s a great idea!” River responded as they began writing on a piece of paper.

Soon after the trio each placed their paper in the hat, Skye pulled a paper from it. “Ohhhh, this ought to be interesting!” She excitedly exclaimed. “Let’s go find a stage to act this out on!”

Quote: Written by our March HINTory winner, Koumori72!
STOP! (A Short Play About Bullying)

Cast

THE BULLY - Skye
THE VICTIM - River
THE INTERVENER - Alex

The stage is bare except for two teenagers. Low lighting is used to cast shadows on their faces.

THE BULLY: You're such a GIRL - you can't throw to save your life!
THE VICTIM: I'm NOT a girl. I'm a boy.
THE BULLY: You are TOO a girl. I know you are - I saw you getting changed the other day.

THE BULLY prods them in the chest. THE VICTIM hugs themselves protectively and glares at THE BULLY. Just then, THE INTERVENER enters Stage Left.

THE INTERVENER: Hey, what's going on here?!
THE BULLY: None of your business!
THE INTERVENER: It sounded a lot like you were misgendering my friend on purpose.
THE VICTIM: Stop it! I can handle this myself!
THE BULLY: You're both ridiculous! She's CLEARLY a girl. You're just idiots.

THE INTERVENER rushes to shove THE BULLY but THE VICTIM stands in their way.

THE VICTIM: I said STOP!
THE BULLY: Why are you protecting me?! I don't need your help!
THE VICTIM: We ALL need each other's help, we ALL have issues, and we all need to just STOP!

THE INTERVENER and THE BULLY stare at her blankly, roll their eyes and exit Stage Right, no longer interested in the situation. The lights either side of the stage fade, leaving THE VICTIM in a spotlight.

THE VICTIM: They'll figure it out in their own time, I guess...

They shrug their shoulders as the lights go down completely.

“Well, that was a lot of fun, wasn’t it Alex? Do you feel better about your acting skills now?” Skye asked, as they walked out of the building.

“A bit… I guess.” Looking around, the area seemed very familiar to Alex. “Hey, isn’t this near the Café we went to when we first met?!”

“Oh, it is!! Your family is working there now, aren’t they, Alex? We should go meet up with them!” Skye jumped up in excitement. It had been a while since they were in the area, but she still remembered how much she loved the food there.

“That sounds like a great idea, Skye!” River exclaimed. With that, the trio made their way to the café.

“Hey, Rebecca!” Alex called towards his sister as they entered. “It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”

“Oh, Alex! And Skye and River too! What have you three been up to? Why didn’t you come home for the holiday?” Rebecca responded, looking at Alex longingly.

“We’ve been so busy! I’ll have to tell you all about our shenanigans. Can we get a table?” Alex asked.

Rebecca looked suspiciously at the trio. “Sure thing! What are you all doing on this side of town?”

“We went to that theater nearby to practice a play! It was on Alex’s New Years Resolution!” River responded. They had always been fond of Alex’s sister and gotten along well with her. For some reason, however, Skye did not.

“Oh, interesting. They just let you all in to practice?!” Rebecca asked curiously.

“Yeah! I guess no one was there at the time maybe?” Alex responded. “Where should we sit?”

“How about this table right here?” Rebecca gestured towards a nearby empty table.
“This would be perfect. Thanks, sis!” Alex murmured excitedly, as the trio sat at the table. He glanced over at Skye, who has been unusually quiet during their time here. “Oh, come off it, will you Skye? It’s been ages,”

Skye shook her head. She would not forget what Alex’s sister had said to her that day. She was hoping Alex’s sister wouldn’t be working there, but alas, here they are.

As Skye was deep in thought, Rebecca came back to the table ready to take their order. “So, what will we be having to…” Distracted by a shimmer of light on the table, Rebecca lost her train of thought. “What’s under the glass?” She asked curiously.

Alex glanced up at his sister. What’s she going on about now… there’s not—oh! He picked up the glass and noticed a piece of paper folded underneath. As he began to unfold, the title of the paper caught his eye.

HINT: A History

“What’s it say, Alex?” Skye asked inquisitively.

“It’s about the history of HINT! I’ll read on…

2010
At the very beginning, multiple forums were under the umbrella of the Information Forums: Magical Theories, Welcome Center, Ideas and Suggestions, Questions, Arts & Graphics.

2017
The Book and Film Discussion Forums officially closed, and two new forums where HEXians could talk about all of their hobbies and interests was born: HINT (Hobbies and INTerests) Enterprises and Fandom Forum. The Fandom Forum as we know it today was originally two separate forums: Book Discussion and Film Discussions.

“Ah yes… HINT Enterprises,” Rebecca murmured silently to herself. Quickly, she ran to the back room.

“Where do you think she went?” Skye asked curiously. “What’s HINT Enterprises…?”

“Who are HEXians?”

“What’s a forum?”

As the trio kept asking questions about the curious piece of paper, Rebecca returned with several files.

“These may have answers to some of your questions. Read them carefully as they may be useful to you!” Rebecca said excitedly, as she placed the files on the table.

“What are they?” River asked inquisitively.

“They’re training materials from when I used to work in HINT Enterprises. They detail a lot of information regarding the forum as a whole, and the other forums that umbrella it,” Rebecca responded, as she began to reminisce about her work there.

“But… why would we need to know about this place?” Skye asked, not truly understanding what was going on.

Rebecca shook her head. “You’ll see,” she responded, as she quickly walked away from the table.

Chapter 21 ~ The Oncoming Storm

River and Skye sat with Alex on his living room floor, the files from his sister Rebecca were spread out between them. Each of them was going through a brightly colored folder that corresponded to a section of HINT.

"Listen to this!" River waved one of the papers excitedly, their hazel eyes bright. "Apparently the Clubs Forum dates back to at least 2011! People could make clubs about whatever they want - it doesn't even have to be magical - and the HINT team even started helping promote those clubs a year later!"

"It's cool that they did that, but these forums don't even exist anymore," Alex frowned as he skimmed one of the pages from a purple folder. "Two years ago HINT merged the Book Discussion and Film Discussion into a combined Fandom Forum. Oh! It looks like they held a community-wide cosplay contest and movie night for the grand opening. That's actually really cool."

"Why haven't we done any cosplaying yet? Look at my hair, I can do so much with this!" River gestured at their red hair. Having not cut it since starting their adventures with Alex and Skye, it was getting rather long. Skye laughed and waved her entire folder to get their attention.

"So that's all nice and everything, but Magical Theories is even older! It was part of the original Information Forums back in 2010. What's really cool is that they've held debates and encouraged people to research their theories."

A huge crash of thunder shook the house. The trio had not noticed the sky gradually getting darker throughout the afternoon, as preoccupied as they were.

"It's a shame for it to be storming already! I thought that wasn't supposed to hit until tomorrow." Alex got up and walked to the kitchen. "You're both welcome to wait the storm out here, though."

"Cool, thanks Alex! What file shall we delve into next, then?"

Chapter 22 ~ Clubs vs. Fandom

Skye and Alex sat at the table with fresh tea, bickering about the mock debate they'd be having while they waited for the weather to clear. The smell of freshly-baked cookies lingered in the air around them, despite having already been eaten.

"No, no, no. The Fandom Forum's too new if these papers are to be trusted. You can use a challenge," She looked at the remaining folders in front of her before handing the blue one to Alex. "There, you can represent Games!"

"That's what you get for throwing an egg at my head," River laughed as they started collecting all the yellow-tinted pages surrounding them. "At least we're letting you use that folder while we debate!"
Thunder boomed outside; the storm hadn't lessened up yet that afternoon, and in fact seemed to be getting stronger. The living room had been rearranged so Skye, as judge, could sit and face both River and Alex.

"For years the Games Forum has picked someone that represents them well to wear a badge of sorts labeling them as..." Alex flipped a page, "'Gamer of the Month.'"

"True, but the Clubs Forum gives recognition to entire groups of people by honoring a club every month! They even compete against each other for the honor now."

"Well the Games Forum holds their own contests, like Gotta Catch 'Em All that was themed after Pokemon." River raised a brow at Alex's comment about Pokemon.

"So we're playing dirty appealing to our honorable judge's love of Pokemon? Clubs ran a huge contest merging Magical Creatures and Pokemon a few years ago!" Skye giggled and made a motion to have Alex make his next statement.

"Right. The Games Forum changes up what their focus is each month - sometimes it's video games, sometimes it's sports. That way no matter what there's going to be something people are interested in. In fact, if I have the pattern right, this month is about video games." He set the folder down frowning - he definitely hadn't been given enough time to argue well.

"The Games Forum limits themselves to just that - games. But the discussions and activities in the Clubs Forum can be about almost anything! They've even spent a while just discussing grilled cheese. Seems like my kind of place." River wrapped up their argument with a perfectly timed stomach gurgle.

"Sorry Alex, I think River's got you beat on this one. Grilled cheese does sound really good though! How about I make us all some sandwiches since we're gonna be here a while yet?"

Chapter 23 ~ The Hidden Room

Alex's sister Rebecca had hardly been in the room for a few minutes before she noticed the tall stack of files containing the history of HINT on the table next to River. Seeing that the stack had caught Rebecca's eye, Skye jumped up to greet Rebecca. "Yep, we've finished the lot! It took a while, but we've been through everything you've given us."

Rebecca squinted at the three friends, then widened her eyes joyfully as a grin spread across her face. Clearly excited, she shared her idea. "You might think you know it all, but there's a lot more to HINT than it seems. Why don't we make a game out of this? A scavenger hunt, perhaps?"

River, who had stayed silent since Rebecca arrived, perked up at hearing about the possibility of a scavenger hunt. “What would we be searching for, exactly?”

“Legend has it that there is a secret treasure hidden somewhere in HINT… and all the clues you’ll need to find it, are right there,” Rebecca said, gesturing to the stack of files on the table.

Alex narrowed his eyes and spoke to his sister. “How would we even know where to start? I mean, if there’s one thing we’ve learned, HINT is huge. It could be anywhere.” While Alex was still talking, Rebecca moved over to the stack of files, as if she already knew what her brother was going to say. She pulled out a thick blue folder from the middle of the pile and handed it to Alex.

“This should do the trick. And here’s your first clue: When you play this game it’ll brighten your day. You can catch more than one, and you’ll always have fun - who knows how far you will stray?”
The next day, Alex, River, and Skye were sipping delicious cups of heaven coffee at the local shop where Rebecca worked. Determined to get closer to the treasure, they divided up the contents of the blue file labeled “Games Forum Directory” amongst themselves. Before they finished even half of their coffee, Skye squealed and pointed to the name of a thread on a piece of paper. “Here!”

Skye picked up the paper to examine it more closely, then asked “What’s Pokemon Go?” River explained the premise of the mobile game, and how it can be used to capture invisible creatures out in the real world. “So, the players navigate themselves around to look for things that they didn’t know were there before! It’s a perfect way to start our hunt.” Alex pulled out his laptop, and started to search through the thread. After flipping through the first few pages, he came across this post. Before he could scroll away, River stopped him. “Wait a minute! I think I actually know this Pokemon! I’ve seen it before in a thread in HINT Enterprises.
As the trio continued talking, Rebecca stopped by their table to refill their mugs. “Looks like you’re on the right track!” she said, pouring the beautiful black beverage into their cups. “A trip to Enterprises must be in order.”

Chapter 24 ~ The Journey Begins

One week later, River, Skye, and Alex arrived at the cafe. It had taken them quite a while to figure out where they were going to find the treasure. Rebecca had refused to tell them what or where it was. She held fast to the idea that she had already given them plenty of information and that it was really their journey to take. That hadn't stopped the trio from trying. The trio worked hard at the hunt for several days before giving up, all except Skye, who had not tried very hard, still wanting little to do with Rebecca after the incident. They attempted for four days straight.

They regrouped three days later once Alex had the idea to use the internet at the cafe. They gathered awkwardly around one computer and let Alex clack away at it. They pulled up a search engine and typed in 'HINT Enterprises'. "It's a website?!"Skye exclaimed. She earned a look from another computer user for being loud. She shrugged it off; it wasn't like they were in a library.

"Well, actually, it seems to be a part of a larger website. Did someone from Hogwarts make this? Who would want to go to school all over again for fun?" Alex was a little shocked.

"Let's just stay on topic, we can look into other stuff later." River reminded Alex and pointed toward the button that said 'Fandom Forum'. "I want to see more about that!" River was excited to see what it might hold. Maybe it would even hold their treasure room or a clue to the treasure.

Alex complied and clicked on the button. It took them to a whole mess of things that River and Skye would likely understand more than he would. "Oh! A directory! Maybe it's too obvious, but it could lead to the treasure!" Skye suggested. It showed them a list of a whole bunch of fandoms. Steven Universe, Batman, Lord of the Rings, Umbrella Academy, and more.

Unfortunately, none of these threads lead to anything relating to a treasure. They almost gave up hope altogether, until Alex spotted a thread all about Pirates. Having learned about pirates, Alex's excitement grew with the find.

"Guys! I bet this will lead to some kind of clue! It has to!" Alex said excitedly. "Let's click it to see what we might find..."

Chapter 25 ~ The Final Countdown

"Seriously?" Skye groaned, once again sprawled out on Alex's floor. "We followed a map from a stranger, got lost in a cave, and attacked by bats. I don't want to go through all that again."

"Don't forget, Alex tried making us think he lost the coins," River chimed in helpfully. "Oi, quit lobbing things at my head, I'm not wrong!" They shouted, putting on the blue hat that Alex threw.

"Look, all I'm saying is that maybe we were on the right track with the whole HINT Enterprises thing, but just went down the wrong path or something. 'Fandom' seems too obvious looking back, but what about 'Magical Theories' - wasn't that one of the places listed? Seems to fit - a mysterious treasure room filled with secrets, our clues are bound to be there!" Alex bounced in the chair, far too excited for someone who was stuck in a cave only days earlier. "I printed some stuff off earlier, come take a look."

The three troublemakers made their way over to the table as Alex spread multicolored papers across. It appeared to be an entire list of discussion topics posted in the Magical Theories forum. A handful were highlighted as potential clues, but one about the near-legendary Philosopher's Stone was circled multiple times.

"I take it you want to go back to the cafe to check out that thread?" Skye asked as she read through a page closer to her. "What about the Elder Wand? Wouldn't that be a treasure worth hiding?" Her eyes lit up, visions of what she'd do with the most powerful wand in existence played at triple speed in her mind.

River nudged Skye's shoulder playfully. "Don't be silly, that's one thing on this list that we at least know isn't lingering about. Much like those dang coins that vanished on us!"

To the trio's astonishment, however, the Elder Wand clue lead them directly to the treasure, with a map leading to a cave. Upon approaching the cave, their eyes widened at the sight before them.

"Oh, wow... what do we have in here?" Alex questioned, as he began poking around the treasure room.

Portions of this chapter were taken from or directly inspired by jfs12, our HINTory winner for last month! Their winning entry is below.

Quote:
The ancient door he could sense something ominous. He certainly hoped it was just his imagination. Another inexplicable adventure was not what he had in mind for the three of them The map had led them right to this door embedded in a wall of rock. As River touched. Slowly he opened the creaking door as Alex and Skye waited close behind, each anticipating the worst.

The trio moved slowly inside allowing their eyes time to adjust to the darkness within. Skye suggested propping the door open just in case it slammed shut trapping them inside. The three of them pushed some nearby rocks and anchored the door ajar.

“The map shows seven coins hidden within this cave. I think we should all stick together in the search and not branch out on our own. Safety in numbers, you know,” River told the others.

The cave was small so they walked single file with River leading the way. Skye pointed to a shaft a light that angled down to a crevice in the cave wall. Their eyes followed the path of light and came to rest upon an indention in the cave floor. There, nestled in the small space were two bright golden coins shining in the sun’s light. Alex pocketed the gold as they continued on their way.

The trio was thankful there was only one path and not any jutting out to other parts. They traveled on through the dank cave. River tripped over a protruding rock in the path.

“Dang rock!” As River was uttering the words, Alex bent and cried, “Aha! Another coin. No, wait there are two here under the stone.”

Skye counted on her fingers in an exaggerated motion, “That leaves three left to find. Let’s hurry before nightfall.

The three kept going. They were finding nothing except a few bats hanging from the cave ceiling. Deeper they went in the belly of the cave. It became wetter and they could hear the dripping of water that grew louder. Rounding a bend in the path they stumbled upon the majestic formation of underground limestone creations. They stood in awe of the magnificent sight. Some of the forms resembled angels, other looked like the pipes of a church organ, and still others looked like men and women huddled around a table.

The dripping water was being funneled into a great basin. The three edged closer and as they neared a shrill cry rang out from the canopy of rock. There were more ear-splitting cries until the cave echoed with screeches. The bats were on the loose and pelting the trio with . . . COINS!

“Everybody grab one and RUN.” River yelled at the top of his lungs.

It seemed to take hours to reached the cave entrance. As quickly as they could, they pushed the rocks aside to close the door before the bats reached them. Outside they sat and examined their cuts and bruises.

“Glad we at least got the coins. Seven and we are done,” Skye whooped.

Alex let out a groan.

“What?” River and Skye called out at once.

”I’ve got a hole in my pocket,” Alex bemoaned. He watched as their faces fell.

“Gotcha!”

Alex and River both pounced on Alex at the same time.

Chapter 26~ THE AFTERMATH

River ducked as a pillow came zooming at their head.

"Look, Alex. I understand you're excited but throwing things isn't a very-"

THUMP!

Whatever River was about to say was cut off as a pillow slammed into their face. It had been thrown by a very smiley Alex. They had been celebrating since finishing the scavenger hunt that had led to the hidden treasure. Skye was hanging off of a sofa in the corner, her hair brushing against the floor as she eyed the two.

"It still seems pretty unreal that we figured all that out from a few clues. We could start a sleuthing business. Or something." She flung her feet down and sat up straight on the sofa, looking from Alex, who currently had another pillow ready to go, and then to River, who was rubbing their nose.

"Sure thing, Skye. Let me just get my magnifying glass," said Alex, tossing the pillow onto the floor and flopping down on the chair opposite the sofa.

"I'm being serious, you giant dork," said Skye, her voice raising an octave or two. Alex shot her a look of mock hurt. River sat down next to Skye on the sofa and stared at her.

"Think about it like this: you," she pointed suddenly at River, her eyes squinting a bit as she did so, "you were pretty integral at keeping us on track. Our glue that binds, so to say."

River looked taken aback, but grateful for the compliment.

"And you, Alex. You may be a handful but you're our handful. Also, you are pretty good at scouring for the unknown information that may be hiding from us."

"Uh, th-thanks, but where is this coming from?" Alex was fidgeting with the hem of his shirt and looking slightly embarrassed.

"Well, what if we did this for a living? What if we, well..." She stuck her tongue out and bit it then went on.

"What if we made it a job. Like an Auror, but we go around and solve mysteries for people." She jumped up and ran from the room, leaving River and Alex looking after her with their mouths open slightly. She came back with a scroll and a quill.

"I kind of want to make a petition to start a business. The business will be us just solving mysteries and stuff."

River and Alex exchanged curious looks at the words. "A... business? Skye, where would we even begin on something like that?"

Looking at the two excitedly, Skye couldn't believe they hadn't thought of it. "We'll have to go to the Ministry of Magic, of course!"

Chapter 27~ THE PROPOSAL

After what felt like hours of working on a business proposal, River felt like an important piece of the puzzle was still missing. "Skye, pause for a moment. None of this explains why we want to open up a business," they gestured at the papers and parchment spread out between them.

"Well... is wanting to help people a good enough reason?" Alex had a thoughtful look on his face. "It's great to make money off our adventuring, but whoever we meet with will probably want a better reason than just money. Skye, what do you think?"

There was no indication she heard him as she continued scribbling furiously on yet another sheet of paper. Alex balled up a discarded piece and threw it toward her head, only to miss spectacularly.

"Why can I only hit you in the head without fail?" Alex asked River, rolling his eyes dramatically. He nudged Skye to finally get her attention. "What are we going to tell the official when they ask why we want to do this?"

"Oh! Uh." She shuffled through some of the papers as if looking for the answer. Alex snickered, causing her to narrow her eyes at him. "I'll just let you handle that part then."

"Fine, fine. So our overall objective then. People come to us with some non-criminal mystery, when we take a case we close up the office, go adventuring to figure out what's up, come back and provide the necessary info or goods?" he summarized.

"Basically. It looks like we have everything we need, there's even an outlined proposal in here. It's not like we'll have to open up shop tomorrow or anything. Right?" River asked Skye, who was finally organizing the paper and parchment into three sets.

"No, no, we're as good as we're gonna get for now. Let's get fancied up and meet in the Atrium in twenty minutes? Is there any Floo powder? Never mind, let's just apparate."

With a loud crack, Alex was the third and final person to arrive in the Atrium. He was grateful he knew anti-wrinkle charms, no matter how he travelled it seemed he got tangled up. "So where are we going, Skye?"

"Level 5. Figured our best bet was the Magical Office of Law, so Celestina Rookwood is willing to meet with us." She answered, leading the way to the magical lifts. "Shall we?"
