DICUSSION - ARTISTIC BIRTHDAYS

Many cultures have been celebrating birthdays for thousands of years, and there are so many elements involved in the celebrations. Have you bought a gift? Have you got a card? Is there a cake? Sometimes it can be hard to keep track. I also find that there's simply not enough time to go out and buy everything that I need to make someone's birthday special.

But why do we feel the need to buy everything? Gifts and cakes especially can be expensive, and there is only a limited selection of everything in the first place. It can be so much more personal to create your own card or cake or present. You can create a message that will perfectly express your feelings towards a person that you care about. After all, you are celebrating their birthday. However, if you are like me and experience the emotions of a faceless statue, then it might be easier to personalise the design on the front of their card instead. Or you could bake their favourite cake and make it really exciting. As a child, I had a castle-shaped cake... and a pig-shaped cake, both of which were personally designed by my mother. It was so fun each year creating my birthday cake, but I wouldn't have experienced that if we had just bought one.

Birthdays can be the best time to use your artistic talents and make someone else feel special.

I have started making birthday cards myself again, because I feel like it shows more effort and are more meaningful than cards bought from shops. I know how much I love receiving cards that are hand made by my friends and not only are they pretty, but really show how much they care, so I feel like it is only right that I do the same.
Sometimes I have found very unique and pretty cards from the bookshop, so I don’t always feel bad about gifting cards that aren’t made by me if they are amazing.

Any birthday cards I make are for family or very close friends. I do enjoy making them but I like to add drawings so based on how detailed they are, it may take a while. This is why I prefer to buy cards for people I’m not as close to.

I received a drawing from someone special to me and it made me very happy especially since it was clear it took a lot of time for them to make it.

I don’t like cake too much so my favorite were the cupcakes the parents of my family friends make. They’re so good! Even though they’re a bit plain (all vanilla I’m boring i know) they still taste amazing!

🎁Do you choose to make birthday cards or buy them? Why?
When I have time and space I love to make homemade cards. This is one I made for a friend who is an expert on Pirates and Piracy.

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?
Yes. Searles made me a birthday book that had me in tears. It was so wonderful, I loved it.

🎁 What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?
Never really liked cake as a child... too sweet. My favorite grown up birthday cake is a vanilla dobage a whipped cream frosting, sliced strawberries and slivered almonds.

I have done both..I love to make the cards because it is more personal , and to me has more meeting than a store bought one.. However, I have bought cards just because it was easier for me, when I don't have time to make one..

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?
Oh yes, my grand children always make me hand made gifts. I just love them, to me they took the time to think about what they wanted to give me , and then create it . I think its beautiful they do that . makes me feel so special

🎁 What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be? My parents didn't get me a cake for personal and sad reasons, but my sisters and brothers had one, I loved the one my sister got , it was so pretty. and it also tasted so good. Italian creme cake. Yum

I do make my own cards usually. I can make them specifically for each person and what they like. They cost a little more to mail, but it is worth the enjoyment that people seem to get from something so personalized.

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?

I have. I have some very crafty friends and family members. I personally love these types of gifts for the thought and care and style they have.

🎁 What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?

My favorite birthday cake as a child was decorated with Cinderella, her prince, the carriage and the horses. It was all white and gold and so pretty and elegant.

I think now I would really like a cake decorated with owls, lol. Little cute ones!

I always made cards when I was a kid. I even had my own 'company' - Lazy Sheep Productions, and I'd draw the logo on the back of every card. It tickled my relatives. These days I don't tend to do cards much at all. My friends and I are all very casual about birthdays.

Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?
Several times. Occasionally it's a bit lame - the kind that is made in bulk without much thought and is something useless that you just end up throwing away. Other times it's the most precious gift, if it was made with love and thought. Those are the kind you treasure forever.

What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?
Probably my favourite was the Harry Potter cake I had when I was 5 (lol). It was a store-bought one with Harry and Hedwig at Platform 9 3/4 printed on royal icing. My wife's mum made every birthday cake and they were amazing - cakes of their favourite characters, a swimming pool cake, tiered cakes, and my favourite, the Hobbit Hole cake.

I have made Christmas cards before when I was younger but never birthday cards. I would like to start making cards as it can be personalised and more special than a card from the shops. A few members of my family prefer not to be given birthday cards as there isn't much to do with them once you have recieved them, so perhaps I could make the card into a gift too for them

Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?
I haven't yet, I would really like this I know that my family and friends could make some really beautiful things, they're also very good at buying gifts that I love too though so I would recieve something I really love either way.

What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?
I unfortunately don't remember any of my cakes from childhood, since I studied baking me and my mum went through a long phase of creating very decorated spongecakes for everyone's birthday which was lots of fun. Now though I think my ideal cake would not be something specifically decorated but perhaps using new interesting flavours or techniques.

I buy them, I use to make them but then thought "why go to all that trouble for people to throw them in the bin" lol seemed like a waste of time.

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?

I don't remember having a handmade gift before it's always something I picked from the store that people got me lol.

🎁 What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?

My fav cake wasn't as a child coz those were normal cakes with candles on nothing special but still nice to receive. My fav cake was for my 25th birthday I think and it was Beauty And The Beast (although the beast on top looked drunk about to topple off lol) it had the smoothest buttercream that just melting on your tongue, it was amazing, but the people who made it moved around and we never found them again.

I don't remember many times I had bought a birthday card, I'm used to making them by myself. There are many reasons for that. I don't like to pay for the card and on the other hand, I like making them. I realise that many of us get rid of the card quite soon but I'd like to think that, for a moment, the person I'm giving the card is happy about receiving the unique card.

Nowadays I've started thinking about recycled materials and paying attention to all the waste we are producing. That's why I'm doing cards from recycled materials.

🎁Do you choose to make birthday cards or buy them? Why?
I choose to make cards, since I enjoy drawing and painting.

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?
I've received a lot of handmade gifts, since my family are all pretty artistic. One that comes to mind is a set of Hogwarts house crests my little sister drew. I really liked them, and i still have them.

🎁 What was your favourite birthday cake as a child? Or what would your ideal birthday cake be?
My favorite birthday cake was probably the one I had on my eighth birthday. It was homemade yellow or white cake, and it was covered (and I mean covered) in messy pink and purple buttercream. It looked like something from The Cat in the Hat, but I really, really liked it.

I tend to buy them, because I love the mildly offensive ones. Like, I got my dad a father's day card that was a bunch of fart jokes and he legitimately loved it 🤷 I've just never really been much of a card person, even receiving them just seems awkward because now it's a piece of pretty paper that I either hold onto for an impractical amount of time and find it again when cleaning, or I feel guilty for tossing it out. Pictures with people mean way more to me, and I'm someone who thinks that if you have something nice to say to/about someone, don't wait for a birthday or holiday.

🎁Have you ever received a handmade gift? How did you feel about it?

I have an old handmade blanket from when I was a baby, I'm incredibly attached to it even though it's in a box with all my baby stuff My best friend made a really tacky display plate, I love it, the plate has this decorative covering meant to make it look like wood, and there's dinosaurs and stems superglued to it. It's beautifully awful, to use her words. It's where I put my keys and mail.

SO. I was like three or four I think, and I had a LION KING cake. Lemme tell you, I remember this cake twentysomething years later. It had these fake tropical trees and little plastic animals that made their way into my toys for virtually forever. It was probably something out of the bakery catalog from Meijer honestly xD

I typically buy cards from the store because I'm a bit lazy, and I'm not that talented in the art department. Though I have thrown stuff together in word for a quick card for my mom before. She liked it XD.

Many times! I love them. That person typically put a lot of thought into the gift that they made for you. I think some of my favorites were blanket for my daughter that I got during my baby shower. We still have all of them. <3

Favorite cake as a kid was probably ice cream cake.. Or just chilled cake that had whipped cream frosting.
Now days I don't eat a lot of cake. I did however buy an ice cream cake for my birthday... and realized that It's not my favorite anymore haha.

My friend is an artist and she also likes doing birthday cards herself as well as receiving handmade ones. I believe she's still collecting them so I have been trying to give my best shot at creating birthday cards for her as I know how much they mean to her. Last year she made me a birthday gift and it was a large painting that reminds me of her every time I look at it. Everyone has their own style and I can so clearly see her in this art piece. These kinds of gifts I keep as a treasure so I do like presents that are made by hand.

I went to culinary school after I retired from teaching. But now I just bake mostly for family friends and local charities like the Senior Center and the Women & Families shelters. I have started doing carved cakes and things like that because the Bakeries around here charge a small fortune for a simple layer cake My step daughter paid $75 for a six inch cake and all they did was attach some plastic eyes and a lollypop horn on it besides it was dry and sickly sweet. I don't charge for my cakes I just think every one should have a special cake on their Birthday and I do get requests from friends of friends for their cakes. It's fun to do

That's really sweet of you! I'm more than willing to bake for friends and family, but if they want something fancy I ask that they provide the supplies/decorations. I'll put in the work no problem. I don't do carved cakes, though I've sort of done a carved abomination for a hex contest, but regular decorated cakes are no problem.

I had a friend years ago who was allergic to chocolate and didn't like cake (idk how, texture thing maybe), so I had to figure out how to make cake mix cookies, so that he'd still have a variety of not-regular-cookie flavors. I make them every Christmas for people now

My family always makes me draw birthday cards, especially for my younger cousins. I don’t mind too much but it does take a long time to make them. Two years ago I made a card and I decided to draw his name made of trio blocks. I spent such a long time drawing it. I made them all blue, his favorite color, and shaded each one just perfectly. Looking back, I could’ve done a much better job but at that point, I felt like it was perfect.

I got a hand-made gift from my best friend when I turned 18 years. She had decorated a glass with paint and glitter. I still have the glass.
