AN ELF'S NIGHTMARE

"Bless him, and to think I use to dream of chopping off his head."
~Ron Weasley

What would be a nightmare to many was Kreacher's dream gig: he wanted his head chopped off and mounted on a wall. To be fair, Ron had dreamed of that day, too. But that makes one wonder, when Kreacher drank the Draught of Despair, which resulted in horrible nightmares, what did he dream? If he dreams happily of losing his head, what would cause him to break out in sweat?

T A S K

Your job is to either narrate or illustrate a scene from one of Kreacher's nightmares following his trip to the cave with Voldemort. If written, the scene should be 200-300 words. If an illustration, one illustration will do - you do not need to create panels unless you so wish.

Kreacher was still so shaken from his time with the Dark Lord. He did not put out the fire before laying to bed, hoping the warmth would take away the chill that persisted stubbornly. Still, he found it nearly impossible to sleep comfortably, and when he opened his eyes next, he could swear he was hallucinating because he saw his favorite master there before him.
Regulus Black stood, just as he had when he saw him last, but he was not looking at Kreacher. There was a young girl there with him who he was speaking with.
"Oliver, help me take everything that we can find. We will need all the money we can get if we are to make it to the Americas alive."
What was happening? Where was his master going?
The girl nodded. "My parents will have a really hard time with this...They're Muggles, so it won't be easy explaining."
Regulus took her hand. "Don't worry. You're my wife, and I will take care of you."
Kreacher watched in horror from where he was trapped as the two stripped everything of value from the home.
"No! Master! No, don't go! Please!"

Kreature trembled from cold in the chilly cavern as he held the locket tightly in his hand and stared down at the eerily still water. Regulus's call had pulled at his elven magic, so he had grabbed the locket prior to popping in, and now the gloomy lake beckoned him.

He took a step closer to the edge and peered down. Was he supposed to go in? Maybe his master was still alive! The hope in his chest was so great that it stopped his breathing, then he dropped to his knees so he could bring his head down over the surface of the water.

Narrowing the distance didn't allow him to penetrate the inky black waters, however. His shaking grew stronger as fear seeped in to join the cold in his old bones. Images of undead hands grabbing him flashed in his mind, and he felt another beckoning tug indicating another call that made him whimper. Still, Regulus had risked his life, so Kreature prepared by taking a deep breath...

And woke up with a scream. The last image in his nightmare had shown his old master's head popping out of the water, his bottom jaw missing and the flesh rotting off of other areas. His master was inferius trapped in the lake where the locket horcrux had been hidden with all of those undead people, and he had been summoning Kreature from beyond the grave!

Kreacher found himself in the darkness. As his eyes adjusted, he found himself lying in a dirty old cupboard. It reminded him of his cozy haven in Number 12 Grimmauld Place, from the crack in the middle of the wall to the way the left door refused to close completely. The house-elf felt his stomach drop. "Where are Kreacher's belongings?" Kreacher muttered to himself.

A murmur of voices drifted to him and he leapt out, following the sound to the tapestry room. "Oh no!" He whispered as he heard the click and whish of something igniting. Kreacher rushed into the room just in time to see his precious Master Regulus's face turn into ashes. "What are you doing?" He shouted. "Master Regulus is a very good man!"

The intruder laughed, flicking the match again and this time holding the flame close to Mrs. Black's picture. "Noooo!"

"Be quiet elf!" The man ordered.

Kreacher opened his mouth to protest and found that he could not. This man can command me! He thought furiously. He is not a good man! He plopped down on the ground, cradling his head in his hands. No, no, no. This can't be happening Kreacher. This can't be happening. I have failed my parents. I have failed my job. Bad Kreacher. Bad Kreacher. Bad Kreacher.

"Look." The man ordered. Kreacher was forced to watch every single agonizing moment as the amazing history of the Black family was burned to the ground.

Kreacher buried his face in his hands. It couldn’t be happening. Not again. Although he was perfectly aware that he was dreaming, he was frightened. Voldemort looked down at him in contempt, without saying a word. Kreacher understood that he was supposed to drink from the metallic mug that was resting on the floor next to him. He shook his head and took a step back, but Voldemort was fast: he took out his wand and in a matter of seconds, he casted the Cruciatus Curse. Kreacher was rolling on the floor in agony, screaming and begging for his life.

“Drink” Voldemort ordered.

Even though his hands were shaking, Kreacher grabbed the mug with both of his hands, and drank hesitantly. At first, his thoughts weren’t at all that disturbing. “Maybe I imagine it being harder than it actually was” he thought. A couple of mugs later though, tears were rolling down his face. The fifth mug brought with it an image of Regulus being killed by Voldemort. The sixth cup meant Walburga Black giving a sock to Kreacher. The seventh mug showed Kreacher how his master, Walburga Black was being tortured by the Death Eaters, and eventually she was killed.

When he finished drinking the entire potion, Voldemort pushed him with his foot. Kreacher touched the water by mistake. In a matter of seconds, dead bodies rose from the lake. Hands were reaching out to him, grabbing and dragging him into the water. He was drowning. He tried to scream, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t breathe anymore.

Kreacher woke up. Tears ran down on his face as he held his head in his hands. He shook his head and sighed. “I’ll never be able to forget...” he thought as a shiver ran down his spine.

Kreacher watched suspiciously as his beloved mistress, Walburga Black, approached him, a beaming smile on her face and a fluffy white jumper in child's size in her hands. The expression on her face, the way she moved, it was so different than usual. Something was wrong.

'Kreacher, darling' she spoke in a voice such unlike herself than Kreacher nearly jumped. 'Something wonderful has happened. I have amazing news!'

Kreacher only bowed respectfully, more confused than ever. He loved his mistress, she treated him kindly, but she would never call him 'darling' or anything like that. He was a house-elf!

'I met an amazing man and I am going to marry him! He is the most charming Muggle I have ever seen!'

Kreacher's head snapped up at Walburga's words. No, it was not possible. His mistress would never associate with, let alone want to marry, the Muggle filth. He stared at her, his eyes full of shock.

'Now, now, Kreacher, don't look so upset. I know it will be a big change for us, I will have to stop using magic forever and leave the magical world, but it is so worth it!'

Kreacher could only look at his mistress as he kept hearing worse and worse words come out of her mouth. And in that terribly cheerful and gentle voice! This was a nightmare! But she was not done yet. As he stood there, motionless, she extended her hands towards him and gave him the fluffy jumper.

'Before I go, there is something I must do. I am freeing you, Kreacher, I knitted this jumper for you myself! Go and be happy, as we can never see each other again.'

Kreacher lay covered in sweat as he tossed and turned in his bed. He had been having nightmares ever since he drank the potion in the cave and was having another one now. He was standing in front of his mistress trembling and sobbing. “No, No,” he was pleading. “Please don’t do this, Kreacher wants to stay. Kreacher will be better. Kreacher likes it here. Kreacher doesn’t want to be freed. Please!”

Walburga Black stared down at him with a scowl on her face. In one hand she held a basket full of socks in multiple colors in the other she held a single gray sock which she was waving menacingly at Kreacher. “Get out! Get out!” she yelled. “I am giving you clothes. I am setting you free. I never want to see you again. You are a worthless stupid house elf. You are the reason Regulus is dead. You killed him. It was your job to protect him. Why didn’t you save him? It’s all your fault. You killed my son. You don’t deserve to stay in this house. Now go,” she screamed tossing the sock at Kreacher. She then turned the basket upside down causing hundreds of socks to rain down on a sobbing Kreacher.

Kreacher lay awake for hours that night, dreading the wave of exhaustion that his fear was still keeping at bay. He knew that his dreams would bring the worst of terrors, terrors to rival those planted in his mind by the Dark Lord. He had hardly survived the day, and in one sense the night would be even worse: no matter how bad the dreams got, no matter how awful the visions he would undoubtedly see, there would be no respite of death, no Inferi to pull him underwater into an eternal rest.

But Kreacher could only resist for so long. Just as the sun was creeping back up over the horizon, he succumbed to sleep at last. The dreams were no less awful than he knew they would be.

The Dark Lord was back, in Grimmauld place now, and Regalus was handing Kreacher over to him. Kreacher screamed and begged and clawed at his master, but Regalus ignored his pleas. He gave the house elf a look of utter disdain and tossed him over to the Dark Lord.

"Don't bother coming back," Regalus added over his shoulder as he turned away. "You're a disgrace - we're far better off without you. He's yours now, my lord. Do as you please with him."

And Kreacher had screamed and pleaded, but the Dark Lord only laughed, slinging him over his shoulder like a sack of meat.

Kreacher woke, breathless and no less exhausted. Someone had been screaming, and he felt sure it had been himself.

Kreacher has done what Master Regulus has ordered him to, but, oh! Did Master Regulus mean for Kreacher to suffer such agony? Kreacher drank the liquid in the basin - every last drop - and he had to endure the painful memories of his past.
He saw his father unceremoniously killed and his head mounted on the wall when he'd outlived his usefulness to the Black family. He'd seen himself punished over and over and over again for a task not performed up to expectations, or for an honest mistake or oversight. He'd relived every cruelty ever visited upon him for his shortcomings.
There was the time he accidentally spilled hot porridge on Master Sirius - while Regulus had laughed and Mistress Walburga had ignored it, Kreacher had been obligated to shut the oven door on his hand and had sustained second-degree burns. No one had bothered to help him bandage his painful wounds.
He felt anew the agony of losing his mother to the vagaries of old age and a life of servitude. Her head, too, had been mounted on the wall. He knew he wanted to someday join his parents in that place of honor - his own head mounted proudly next to theirs - yet he wept at the realization that he must endure much more pain and humiliation before that time came.

As he drank the last sip of that fateful drink, Kreacher wondered what would happen. Maybe he would die? Maybe he would finally be mounted on a wall – a place of honor. But all that happened is he found himself closing his eyes.

Next moment he was back in the Black house, in his bundle of blankets. He shot up and realized it was time to get breakfast ready for the family. As he stepped into the kitchen he saw a red headed woman making porridge. She looked at him and gestured for him to take a seat. As he started shaking his head, she held out her hand to him and introduced herself: ‘Hello Kreacher, my name is Molly and I am your new master’. As Kreacher was processing this, another red headed person came in the room, and another, then two that looked alike, then another, another, until he lost count. ‘This is my family’ Molly said as way of explanation. ‘You will be serving us from now on’. ‘Oh don’t look so horrified’ she said, ‘we don’t mount house elves on walls or make them wait on us. You are in for a life of love and relaxation. You can even be set free if you want.’

Kreacher woke up screaming.
