As she walked down the rapidly cooling stone corridor, Janice noticed goosebumps appearing on her arms, and she swore she heard movement from within the walls. Her eyes darted from side to side as she quickened her pace, urging herself to get to the Potion Master's door and out of the drafty hallway. As the torches, elegantly placed upon the stones, flickered in unison, Janice let out the quietest squeak as she took off running, her bag slapping against her side with every step. It's only a few more paces! she thought to herself as she saw the doorway looming at the end of the hall, like a beacon guiding her to safety.

Task
February's task is set to help you be more descriptive in your posts. Description is the key point in showing versus telling. What we mean by that is we want you to show readers what your character is seeing, feeling, or experiencing, rather that just giving the readers a statement. For example,
Quote:
Ron was embarrassed at Lavender's gift

is a statement that falls into the realm of telling. A descriptive statement, showing Ron's embarrassment would be something like this:
Quote:
Ron's face burned, and as he turned away, gift in hand, he caught sight of himself in a mirror - his face was nearing the same color of his hair!

A burning, flushed face and turning away are two signs of being embarrassed. It's much more enjoyable to read roleplays that include details like the second sentence over the first.

Description also includes adding details about your character, the setting, and the minor details that bring the story together.
Quote:
Eyes, as wide and bright as the sky above, glistened with tears threatening to fall

is a lot more descriptive than
Quote:
tears shown in her blue eyes

For this task, you are to choose from one of the following canon characters and write five sentences about them. One must be about their features, one should be about an emotion, and one should be details about their location. The other two are your choice, but all five sentences must be descriptive.

Your character choices:
Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody
Cormac McLaggen
Olympe Maxime
Dobby
Sybill Trelawney

Rules
1. All HEX and RPC Teaching Center rules apply to this contest.
2. All entries should be posted in this thread.
3. All work must be your own work.
4. To qualify for a prize, you must complete the task of choosing one of the canon characters listed and writing 5 descriptive sentences about them.
5. Winners will be randomized among all eligible entries.
6. All entries are due by February 14th at 11:59 p.m. HEX time.
7. If you have any questions, please owl Cait.

Cormac McLaggen

Cormac was normally an extremely good looking teenager. Tall, with broad shoulders, an attractive face, and curly hair ( the haters called it ‘wiry’), a lot of girls wanted to date him. However as he stomped down the dimly lit, chilly corridor to the sleeping portrait of The Fat Lady, he wasn’t appealing at all. His scowling face reflected his inner rage, letting all know that a thunderstorm was raging inside him. How dare that know-it-all Hermione Granger ditch him!

Sybill Trelawney's thick-rimmed glasses perfectly emphasized the light blue orbs that lay perfectly symmetrical on either side of her thin nose. Her wild golden curls frizzed out around her oval face and fell lightly on her shoulders. In front of the professor sat a glass orb on a purple silk covered table, the edges of which were frilled and tasseled in gold. Her nose scrunched up in concentration as she palmed the crystal ball and squinted into it's depths. Cloudy smoke filled the orb and obscured the picture within.

The House Elf squeaked in fear, the candle in his hand nearly dropping to the floor. Tiny bony figure covered in nothing but a dirty old rag, one could easily mistake Dobby's shaking form to be a scared little kid. That is, until the candle light reached his face, revealing large round eyes, a pointy nose and two ears sticking flat on the side of his face, as if cowering down. Even though his entire body shook, Dobby's need to obey was stronger than his fear of the dark night. On he went, further into the quiet hall in Malfoy manor, to work day and night until the house was spotless.

Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody groaned as he limped through the dark alley, worn boots scraping the cobblestones and the travels of the day wreaking havoc on his aching bones. Disappointment fueled his ire; the Auror's knuckles scraped and bleeding, he clutched his wand in a fisted hand and wordlessly flung a garbage bin out of his way with an angry flick. The acrid smell of grease from the open kitchen door of a pub made his bulbous nose twitch and he muttered a few coarse words under his breath, daring anyone to investigate the noise. Droplets of water gathered on the ends of his gnarled hair, the misty rain not having let up all day. Mad-Eye heaved an abrupt sigh, pulled the large collar of his coat up around his neck and rolled his massive shoulders with both determination and stubbornness.

The large and elegant giantess (in an entirely allegorical sense) Olympe Maxime, who caught the eye of any man she wished simply by virtue of her beautiful face and booming voice, stood heads and tails above the likes of other women. She had never found anyone who quite matched her in any way, and yet she was finding herself giddy and lightheaded as she strode beside the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid, their hands barely brushing together as they walked. He made her feel small and petite whenever he looked at her with those big brown doe eyes and flushed cheeks. The snow lightly dusted the walk before them, clinging to Rubeus's hair and beard as the fairy lights around the grounds made each snowflake sparkle. His hand reached up to touch her hair, and she couldn't help giggling like a young school child, turning to meet his eyes with a soft smile.

Dobby stood next to a couch in the Gryffindor Common Room holding a red pillow in one hand and a gold knit hat in the other. He was wearing a faded gray pillow case and had several knit hats in varying colors on his head. He had blue eyes, a pointed nose, two large ears and wore a huge smile on his face. He hummed softly to himself as he continued to clean and pick up assorted items that were scattered around the room. I love working here he thought as he paused to admire another hat before adding it to his head.

The gigantic woman exploded at the half-giant's insinuation; her face reddened, muscles tensed, and she was beside herself with fury. Olympe's stretched olive skin moved furiously as her thin lips framed her denial, her brown hair was haywire, mirroring her swelling emotions, and she was clenching the fur of her long-sleeved coat.

Even the darkness of the forest could not stop herself from finding Hagrid and glaring daggers at him, for the marble of the stone reindeer had reflected just enough moonlight for sight. Despite the facade of an insulted woman, Olympe Maxime could not help but feel a deep-seated fear inside of her - the fear of her ancestry being discovered and used against her, and fear that the British Ministry of Magic are not nearly as accepting of "impure blood" as the French were.

Dobby

Elation flowed through his body as Dobby wandered the halls of Hogwarts as a free elf. He was nearing the kitchens, where he worked, and the sweet smells of pumpkin and cinnamon swirled into his nostrils. His sharp ears perked up as he hear the chatter of his fellow worker elves behind the door, and he smiled, at home. Rubbing his finger on the rough canvas of the painting, Dobby tickled the pear to enter, and was surprised to see the Headmaster there, white beard flowing gracefully down his torso. He was tasting a substance in one of the pots and he motioned for Dobby to come have a taste. As the elf neared the pot, Dumbledore leaned down and handed him a cup with a brownish mucky substance in it. Placing the glass to his lips, Dobby let the mush slowly enter his mouth and his taste buds erupted with flavor. He could not tell exactly what flavors were taking over his mouth, but he knew he liked it.

Sybill Trelawney

The beads on her shawl clicked quietly against one another as Sybil moved about her tower room preparing a cup of tea. She lifted the cup to her face to blow on the hot liquid, the steam fogging up her thick, round glasses and making her frizzy blond hair flair wider around her face. Upon finishing her brew, she flipped the cup upside down over the saucer, waited a moment, then turned it back to glance at the tellings in the leaves. Her breath quickened, heart racing with fear she set the cup down with trembling fingers and it clattered on the saucer before tipping over, obscuring the symbol of doom. She glanced around her cluttered room, past the gold fringed heavy drapes, the rich moroccan seating poofs arranged around the low ebony table, her favorite crystal ball swirling with grey fog, and the antique deck of tarrot cards that had belonged to her great-great-grandmother, Cassandra Trelawney and wondered how to warn Dumbledore.

Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody reached out against the rugged oak doors, pausing as he felt the touch of the rough wood. His heart thumped rapidly, and his magical eyeball was darting back and forth faster than a Snitch. Surely his targets on the other side of the door were lying in wait for him, ready to ambush the predator that was about to storm their dingy, decrepit hovel. He clenched his staff tighter; the ridges caressed his fingertips, leaving a warmth that soothed his nervousness. And with one fluid motion, he pushed the door open and produced a translucent, milky shield in front of him.

Dobby

Dobby's eyes grew wide as tennis balls, his gray skin turning pale as he spotted what he had hoped he wouldn't see. He wanted to smack his head into the nearby wall and cry out in worry and fear at the same time. The house elf darted between the legs of hundreds of Muggles, carrying a train ticket in one hand and a whole variety of things in the other, briefcases, purses, and even a makeup bag in the other. Unfamiliar smells drifted in the air, sunscreen, sweat, and something salty that was unidentifiable. Dobby felt something thumping in his chest and realized it was his heart, wild with concern.

The burly ruffian of a man limped along a damp, musty corridor, the uneven shuffling of his feet and clacking of his staff echoing dimly across the ancient stones. His weathered gray coat flapped around his knees as he mused hoarsely to himself in rapid, low growls. One glassy blue eye the color of glaciers roved madly in its socket, spooking a pair of Gryffindor students, who had been so absorbed in their conversation that they forgot to heed where they were going. Alastair’s crazy eye stood still for the briefest of moments and fixed them with an unfeeling stare that made the students more antsy than when it flipped around in his head. “Hmpf!” the older man grumped to the boys, motioning weakly with his hand for them to get out of his way as he continued determinedly on toward the cacophony emanating from beyond the top of the stairwell.

Alastor Moody was not a pretty sight to behold: his puckered and gnarled face had more lines than an ocean has fish, and imbedded in it was a bright blue eye that spun eratically, lingering on something every now and then before whizzing off again. He leaned heavily on his knobbly wooden cane as he squinted up the dark alleyway. It was lined with rickety old doors, and the mannequins peered silently from the glass displays, only their faces visible in the near blackness. Alastor felt a sudden nervousness creep into his throat, and he suddenly wished that he did not possess a magic eye, for maybe then he would not have been able to make out the frozen faces in the dark. He could feel his nerves roiling in his stomach, and he realized that his hand was shaking slightly where he gripped the cane. He considered the possibility that it was more than nerves, that it was true fear, but he quelled the thought at once. It did not matter.

Professor Trelawney wrinkled her pink nose and turned with a sniff. What is that scent?, she wondered, turning to glance at the rows of divination teacups stacked on the shelves behind her. Roses?...and oranges? she asked herself, pulling her lilac shawl more tightly around her shoulders. What an odd combination, she thought, puzzled. Roses... they always reminded her of her mother. She reached up and wiped a lone tear from her cheek. Mom? she whispered to the silent air is that you? Do you have a message for me from the great beyond? She strained as hard as she could, listening for any hint of a reply, but none came. Suddenly, the brackets of the shelf behind her came free from the wall. she turned in time to see hundreds of porcelain cups come crashing to the floor, smashing into to tiny fragments that scattered into every cornier of the room. WHAT THE... a shout escaped her just as a small cackling figure scuttled out of the doorway and into the hall. Happy Valentine's Day! cried Peeves, gliding away.

Madame Olympe Maxime gracefully entered the Yule Ball, her hair neatly coiffured, maquillage expertly applied, she searched the room with pounding heart. Excited breaths escaped from her full mouth as she caught sight of her beloved Rubeus Hagrid walking towards her with a corsage of red roses. Olympe accepted them with pleasure, almost purring with delight as her sharpe, beaky nose took in the full romantic scent of the gift, her large dark eyes shone and glistened in the candle light. The strains of a Waltz came from the band, and Olympe Maxime trembled at Hagrid's gentle touch as he twirled her about the floor. She had fantasised and dreamed of a moment such as this her whole life, her head resting on the shoulder of her suitor as they danced in harmony until morning's light.

Dobby's long, slender fingers trembled as he reached for the door handle. He was understandably nervous, as he was about to request the day off, and even though he was a free elf, there were still commitments to be upheld, and his fellow elves would probably not be best pleased if he was not pulling his weight. Opening the door to the kitchens, he felt his whole face go bright red, right up to the tips of his floppy, bat-wing shaped ears. There was a cake in the centre of the table, and written on it in neat, green icing which matched the colour of his eyes was the message, "Happy Birthday, Dobby!" They had remembered his birthday! He was so happy he felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes so that he could cry with joy, and he dabbed at them with the corners of the tea towel which served as his work clothes, overwhelmed by this simple gesture.

Sybill Trelawney's eyes bulged behind her oversized spectacles, making them appear to be even larger than normal. She let out a horrified gasp, her mouth a round 'O' of shock as she shook her head in disbelief. Her hands shaking slightly, she brought them down onto the Headmaster's desk, clutching the edge to steady herself as she looked wildly around Dumbledore's Office. "What do you mean, share the duties of my lessons?" she asked, her voice breaking with the effort of keeping the hysteria she was feeling inside. Blinking several times to ascertain that she was not, in fact, dreaming, she stared open-mouthed at the white-bearded Headmaster, gobsmacked at the idea that he was proposing: that she Sybil Trelawney, great great-granddaughter of the celebrated Seer Cassandra Trelawney, share out her Divination lessons with a common mule!

Olympe Maxime gazed out of the window of her study, pondering the snow-covered Alps to the west of the hidden castle. Her tall frame leaned in on itself wearily, long-fingered hands weighed down by their many jeweled rings as she reached for the glass of elf-made wine on her desk. Fear seemed to be her default emotion lately, pressing on her shoulders like a weighted mantle. Her determination to protect her students from the growing threat of war never wavered, but part of her wondered just how much she could do against such reckless hate. A gusty sigh parted the Headmistress's ruby lips, the lines around her dark glinting eyes tightening.

Cormac McLaggen bobbed in front of the goal hoops on the far side of the Hogwarts quidditch pitch, his broad shoulders stretching across the middle ring. The autumn sunlight highlighted his auburn hair and glistened off his ebony black Nimbus 2001 which he had polished for over an hour the night before. Cormac exuded a confidence to the other students and the quidditch referee, but deep inside his stomach was in knots as he worried about his father’s reaction if he failed to make the quiddich team for the second year in a row. To get rid of the nerves that threatened to overwhelm him, he began weaving back and forth in front on the hoops. As the would-be chaser approached him with the red quaffle held aloft in her right hand, Cormac narrowed his eyes and glared at the young student. “Which way are you going to go, Ginny”, he murmured. He drew his shoulders up and pressed his chest out, his muscles straining against the crimson fabric of his robes, as he lunged to the right to deflect her shot.
