I have fallen for click bait on more than one occasion, but especially when I was younger. I think that it is particularly successful on social media and through advertisements, especially when it comes to deals that seem too good to be true and celebrity news. It might evolve in the future in that they'll be more clever about enticing people to click on it. It should be more heavily monitored by social media platforms. Not only does it make people vulnerable to cyber attacks and viruses, but it can lead to scams. Most people realize that they should not give out personal information or credit card details. Not everyone knows that. It can also lead to inappropriate links being clicked mistakenly.

Have you ever fallen for clickbait before?

Yes, all the time. Even when I KNOW that's what it is, I'm sometimes compelled to check it out. I almost never make it through the whole thing though. I don't have the time or energy. I always check the comment first, lots of True Heroes will summarize things so you can avoid the click.

Where do you think clickbait is most successful?

On Social media. At least that's where I see the most tempting ones. And since it's in the middle of news/reposts from people I know it can be confusing as to who the link is from.

Do you think clickbait should be more heavily monitored by social media platforms, and why/why not?

Nah, as long as it's not malicious I think we bear the responsibility ourselves.

CURRENT TOPIC

Social Media has grown dramatically over the past few years. New apps are constantly being created, and marketed as 'the next big thing'. So how do the big names like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. keep their high level rating? Simple, they adapt by bringing out new features that they feel users will enjoy, or find beneficial in their everyday lives.

Our topic for this discussion is the advantages or positives of using Social Media. For example, connectivity is definitely one of the biggest perks. People from anywhere can now connect with anyone around the world. Promotion is another advantage that helps small businesses, who use it as a cost effective way to advertise their products. Updates help us stay informed of what is going on in our own communities, and the world around us.

What are some of the advantages for you when using Social Media? How do you use Social Media to stay connected? Have you ever tried out a place or purchased a product that you saw advertised on Social Media before? Do you find Social Media helpful for news or emergency updates?

These questions are meant to get your minds pondering the topic; they are not meant to limit you. Make sure to keep checking this post - we will post a new topic for discussion twice a month!

I use Facebook to keep in touch with my family. I have family members who live a couple of states away so if not for Facebook I would never really see them. Facebook is also how I discovered HEX. It popped up as a suggested site and I joined and the rest is history. I receive alot of news udates through social media too. Any time something major happens locally or anywhere it pops up in my newsfeed.

I don't use social media. For myself, I can't see any advantage to social media. I hate chatting and the few people I know I keep in touch with in person. I can't see posting personal information online. It gives hackers an advantage to know about you.
As far as buying things...I hate shopping so I only buy what I need from stores I can go to in person and inspect what I am buying.
I get my news from the local channels. They do a great job of getting news to you quickly.

I'm technically on social media; I had to get it recently in order to stay up with school announcements, etc. At least where I am, if you're not on Facebook, you essentially have no way of hearing about any of the goings-on until it's way too late. But I'm hardly ever on and never post anything.

I use it mostly to follow sports people and bands that I like. Keeping up with what they're doing and showing my support for them. I also use it as a side to my cat blog, posting pictures and tidbits that aren't really big enough to be a blog in themselves.

I've bought a few things I've seen advertised on SM. Its quite often random niche stuff I'd probably never have found otherwise.

For news and emergency updates, SM is pretty handy. If anything happens and you wanna find out about it, do a search and there is nearly always someone already talking about it.

I think there are some really good uses that these forms of communication can be put to. It is a great way to stay in touch with my family members that are scattered across the country and world. However I am leery of things for sale and do not buy them on social media. As far as news, it is not a reliable source, because really, anyone can post anything.

With Facebook, I get to stay in touch with family and friends that live far away. I use Facebook for keeping up to date with family and friends, and I use Snapchat for talking to my friend in Denmark (and for the awesome filters lol). I tried something that was advertised on Instagram and it was completely different than what was shown, basically, it was a spray hair removal but what I got was a gel you put on after you shaved... I was so annoyed, it cost 15 pounds. I do, I need to keep up to date with bus routes being closed off or if its a bank holiday I need to know if buses are running so I use Facebook for that, and I use Instagram for updates on my favourite shows, and Twitter to follow my favourite celebrities lol

What are some of the advantages for you when using Social Media?
Everyone is on the big ones, so it's easy to get info to a lot of people fast.

How do you use Social Media to stay connected?
Occasionally post updates from my life, but more I use the instant messaging features associated.

Have you ever tried out a place or purchased a product that you saw advertised on Social Media before?
Once or twice, but not usually. But then, that's because I'm broke af.

Do you find Social Media helpful for news or emergency updates?
Very much so. This year our country had its second mass shooting ever, and social media was amazing for organizing vigils, setting up donation funds, and generally sharing support.

Social Media is basically fast, makes finding what I want quickly is the advantage I appreciate the most. I use Facebook to keep up with family, especially ones that live a distance away. I enjoy the quickness of Twitter and Instagram for the amazing pictures. I have bought a few things I have seen on Facebook, you can always find new or vintage objects at a click of the mouse. I do find Facebook & Twitter the easiest and fastest places to get a breaking news story. I am a great fan of people watching and where else could I find so many celebrities flaunting themselves for all to see, plus I can see it all in the comfort of home , in my jammies!

To be honest, I'm generally 'grossed out' by most of what I see that is called "social media". Maybe it's just a generational thing for me, but I am sick to death of this rampant 'oversharing' and lack of privacy. I USED to be on Facebook all the time, but then the more I heard about how they sell us to all the marketers -- or whatever you call them -- and that WE are the actual product being sold, the less I wanted to participate. Then, you have people (my husband for instance) that likes to take pictures of where we are and tell people what we're doing and where we go. This is beyond annoying, it's dangerous and an invasion of my person privacy. I don't want to know what you had for dinner. I don't want to see endless selfies of you making yet one more 'duckface pout' while looking up into a selfie stick held phone so your double chin doesn't show as badly. Then when the news broke about the russian tampering with our election via facebook, twitter, instagram etc, I really got a dislike for them.
Soooooo... when you're looking for 'positive' elements of social media, I'm probably not the one to ask. I have most of my family tagged on FB and I check it every couple of weeks to make sure no one has died. If there's anything really important, they know to text me. I do have a twitter account... I have no idea why since I rarely, if ever, use it.
It is good for organizing events and political rallies... just as long as you know who is REALLY behind said event and, again, it's not some stupid russian attempt at inteference in our election or society. I have no clue about tumbler or instagram and the lot, so I can't really comment on them other than to say, I believe that instagram has been purchased by facebook, so why should I buy into the corporate giant that is trying to big brother every facet of my life by adding even more content for them to scam off of me.
Sorry.... don't really have much use for or 'positive thoughts about' social media.

To be honest I feel like the biggest advantage of social media is that it is fun. I agree that there are downsides and dangers, but I like to look at pictures of my friends and to stay in touch with the ones who have moved away or who I moved away from. I don't think I've used it for the actual connecting part, but more than once I've seen a picture or an update that lead me to call or text or reach out in another capacity.

I can't think of any products I've purchased from social media, but I've definitely bought tickets to events I've seen advertised there. Random stuff I never would have found on my own, like kite festivals or lantern shows or special meet-and-greets with artists and writers I admire. I don't use it for news or emergency updates-- I have other, better curated sources that I find more trustworthy.

The advantages of social media is keeping in contact with family and friends. We can see what they're up to and get involved in their lives. It also connects us with people from across the world. We can make friends and relationships from the comfort of our own home. I mainly use social media to keep up to date with my favourite celebrities. I like to know what's going on. Also, social media is great for sharing opinions so, whenever something new is released, I take to social media to check out what other people think. Lastly, I use social media to keep up with the news. And due to our accessibility to social media, we can instantly find out when something bad (or good!) has happened. It keeps us in the loop.

What are some of the advantages for you when using Social Media?
As already mentioned before the number one is the easy connection with people all around the globe paired the opportunity - if chosen to- to remain anonymous. It has a wide spread power of people of all colors, faiths and ages. One good example: I don't think that a decade ago a show like "Lucifer" that got cancelled would've been able to be renwed/find a new network (Netflix) just by the people on social media uniting and requesting this.

How do you use Social Media to stay connected?
I don't really put out that much content. I have started taking snaps of the week and uploading them on my insta or using the story mode to show what I've been up to. This resulted in a little more chats going on there, but nothing too meaningful.

Have you ever tried out a place or purchased a product that you saw advertised on Social Media before? Guilty! I get inspired by a lot at least. I usually try out some of the recipes I stumble upon.

Do you find Social Media helpful for news or emergency updates?
A clear yes and no. In terms of pace news spreading on social media is so much faster than any other medium, BUT (and that's ab big BUT) it tends to be onesided. I like to check regular news sources after I've spotted something going on in the world via social media.
