Official Discussion

Greetings! As you may recall, last month’s issue of the Daily Prophet was all about Ravenclaw! If you missed February’s issue, then never fear; you can check it out here!

Ravenclaw is one of Hogwarts' four Houses, and its founder was Rowena Ravenclaw, who was a medieval witch. Ravenclaws are best known for their wittiness, creativity, and wisdom. Their House color is blue because it corresponds to the sky through which their House animal - the bronze eagle - soars. If you were sorted into Ravenclaw, then you have plenty of reason to be excited, because members of this House are notorious for welcoming eccentric people and always speaking their minds.

A particular Ravenclaw I related to was Luna. She was quirky and some might say weird but she didn’t let anyone change her opinions or take any of the cruel things that happened to her to heart. We should all aspire to be so self-confident. I don’t know that I believe Ravenclaw should have been featured more prominently. The Trio were all in Gryffindor so it makes sense that Gryffindor was focused on more. Ravenclaw wasn’t neglected, it just, wasn’t the main focus. I was not at all surprised to see that the “Wit Beyond Measure” was made up of Ravenclaws. I would have been more surprised if it WASN’T. I have mixed feelings about Helena Ravenclaw. On one hand, she shouldn’t have taken her mother’s diadem. On the other hand, she sounds like a child desperate for her mother’s affection and desperate to be noticed for her own accomplishments. I can understand that. I also pity her because she died a horrible death. Also, she didn’t “lose” the diadem, it was stolen from her by a boy she trusted. I can only imagine that she saw Tom as very much like the Bloody Baron when she found out what had happened. So I do pity her.

I always enjoy from the Kitchen. As a Ravenclaw of course the colors of this issue's recipe were delightful!

I do relate to Luna, because like her, people thought I was a bit odd in school, lol. I also relate to the Ravenclaw side of Hermione and Minerva. Both of them I admire a great deal, even if they are technically Gryffindors.

I would have liked to see more than one Ravenclaw (Luna) be depicted in a favorable light. I feel like they got a bit of a bad rap in the books.

Not really. It was rather typical.

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?

That she was remarkably naïve. But sometimes people who are book smart are lacking in street smarts. This may have been the case with her.

P.s. I know this is not over 200 words, but this is how I feel. I have a hard time embellishing my writing for length's sake.

I liked the From the Kitchen article. I cannot cook, for the life of me, but I will push the recipe in front of my partner and maybe she will get the hint.
- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
I mean, Luna is definitely a contender. She was a delightful character and I need more of her in my life! I was kind of hoping she would get with Neville XD but she does well with a Scamander.
- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
Oh yes, but I think a lot could be done better in the series. Just about everyone needed more attention XD
- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
A little bit, I guess, but not particularly.
- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
The story was a heartbreak from beginning to end. I looked it up after I read the series to see the entirety of it and it is really so sad

What was your favorite article from this issue and why?
-The wizarding crime section, because it was interesting to read how the strengths of Ravenclaw are useful in the career choice of Auror. The logic and wit that Ravenclaw graduates have would be very useful for solving the various crimes that come their way.

Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
-I suppose that if I were to pick a Ravenclaw I could relate to, it would be Luna Lovegood. I have my moments where it's tough for me to be able to fit in, though I try not to let it bother me. As long as one is alright with one's self, then it doesn't matter what others think.

Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
-I would have enjoyed seeing Ravenclaws as well as Hufflepuffs and Slytherins featuring more prominently in the book series. Each house has it's strengths and weaknesses, and it's important to see how all four Hogwarts houses fit together.

Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
-I wasn't surprised considering Ravenclaws have such a firm grasp on book learning, and can put that into their day to day responsibilities. For a venture like this, I also felt that Ravenclaws would most suited due to their logical minds.

How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
-I was saddened to learn that Helena stole the diadem and both Helena and the Bloody Baron died as well. Even though the diadem is a founder's artifact, no one should have to die over it.

Discussion Questions to Consider:
- What was your favorite article from this issue and why?
I always like "Ask Us" but it was also interesting to read more about Ravenclaw
The reason why I like it is that I do not usually read a lot about Ravenclaw. I am mostly reading about Slytherin, since that is my Hogwarts house. But many of my friends (offline) are Ravenclaws so I actually should get to know about them.

- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
I can be as dreamy as Luna Lovegood if I do not sleep enough. If I do not sleep enough, I can talk about random things like Nargles and such. A bit like Luna.
Also I can then be really creative in crazy ways. I come up with ideas that others consider as being too vague or dreamy. But to me those ideas sound really good. So I think that for the Ravenclaws I can relate to, it is Luna. And in the books I thought she was funny and she did not pay attention to her classmates bullying her, which is very good. It just seemed to fly past her because she was in "another world".
I can also be in another world, in a way.

- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
Yes, the books were mainly about Gryffindors and Slytherins. There were not that many Ravenclaws, which was a pity. I would have loved to see the houses interact more. It would have been great if there were more Ravenclaws, for example also in the Order of the Phoenix. The Order of the Phoenix has many Gryffindor members, but I think the Order could have been even stronger and better with some Ravenclaws in it to come up with creative and well-thought plans. Not that Gryffindors can't do that, but I would have loved to see that.

- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
Not very much because I associate it with Ravenclaw

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
It is very sad and it also shows how much of a manipulator Tom Riddle was.

- What was your favorite article from this issue and why

It's hard to choose, there were so many good articles! I'd have to say one of my favorites was the Ask Us section. I can relate pretty well to the third question - I've always been split pretty evenly between Ravenclaw and Slytherin, and although I was sorted into Slytherin here, I often think Ravenclaw might have been the better fit.
(On this topic, have you seen the Sorting Hat Chats on tumblr? They propose a two-part sorting system, where your primary house corresponds to your motivations and your secondary house corresponds to how you actually do things. By this system I'm definitely a Slytherin primary, Ravenclaw secondary, and I think it can really explain why some people have so much difficulty choosing one house. So I'd recommend that anyone who's reading this check that out!)
Going back to the question, I think it shouldn't be too odd for a Slytherin to aspire to be top of the class. We're ambitious, so we'd do anything for those House Points! A Ravenclaw would probably be more eager to learn for the sake of learning, but Slytherins tend to be very success-oriented. We know where we want to get and what we want to achieve, and doing really well in school is often the way to get there. So just because you're at the top of your class doesn't mean you have to be a Ravenclaw.

- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?

I bet everyone's going to say Luna, since everyone thinks they're a bit odd. Me, I relate more to Terry Boot. I'm not necessarily forgettable, but I tend to stay well below the radar. We all know Terry, but he stays out of the limelight, which isn't easy when the class year is this small. But although he flies under the radar, he's still involved in all the things that really matter: Dumbledore's Army, the Battle of Hogwarts, etc. He's not a big-shot like Hermione, at least as far as we know, but he's still super smart, as evidenced by him taking NEWT-level Potions. I can relate to all of this - I'm quiet and tend to watch everyone around me without getting too involved, but whenever anything interesting happens, you can be sure that I'll be there.

That being said, I do relate to Luna. I’ve always been the oddball, and I enjoy saying odd things to see how people will react. (To be fair, Luna doesn’t seem to know that what she says and does is odd.) But the similarities stop there, because Luna is still a pretty nice person, and I’ve never quite figured out how.

- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?

Yes, absolutely. Harry's great, yeah, but he's just a tad hot-headed (okay, he's super hot-headed). It never hurts to add a bit more logic and common sense into the equation. If not for Hermione, he would have never gotten anywhere, so imagine how much more quickly he could have defeated Voldemort if he had had a few Ravenclaws working with him!
Okay, okay, everything was perfectly orchestrated, and it all worked out in the end. I still wish we could have seen some more Ravenclaw action. At least Ravenclaw got off better than Slytherin and Hufflepuff, though. Slytherin is portrayed as unilaterally evil and despicable, and Hufflepuffs are portrayed as a bunch of happy-go-lucky, boring people. I'm more irritated about Slytherin and Hufflepuff representation in the books, but more Ravenclaw would have been nice as well. It does make sense for most of the major characters to be Gryffindor, though, considering that that’s Harry’s house.

- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?

Given the name, absolutely not. I'd be shocked if a group from any other House (or even if there was a single non-Ravenclaw) decided to take Ravenclaw’s motto as their company name. However, considering the purpose of the company as a whole, I think it would be fitting for Slytherins to create something like it as well. Slytherins are often all about long-term self advancement, and an investment firm would fit in pretty well with those ambitions. But I bet they’d rather face a full interview with Rita Skeeter than name their firm “Wit Beyond Measure”!

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?

It’s just a sad story, all of it. No one had to die over the thing. I think the Bloody Baron part is the worst, but at the end of the day most of it was Helena’s fault. I just wonder how Tom Riddle was able to track down the exact tree where she hid the diadem. I mean, it’s a forest. Forests have lots of trees.

- What was your favorite article from this issue and why?

I really enjoyed the Expose by SerenityDragoon. Although I am proud to be a Ravenclaw, I think we sometimes come across as 'holier than thou' and haughty, but it's reassuring to know that Ravenclaw's aren't all squeaky clean in reputation. Gilderoy Lockhart is by far my least favourite Ravenclaw, so secretly I relished reading up on his downfall, although I think people should give him more credit in terms of intelligence, he did have most of the wizarding world fooled for so long after all!!

- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?

My favourite Ravenclaw by far is Professor Filius Flitwick. His story really is amazing. Firstly, he was treated quite badly growing up because of his goblin ancestry, but that didn't stop him shining during his school years. Despite his stature he became an accomplished duelling champion after leaving Hogwarts and I think that this showed his inner strength and the fact that he did exactly what he set out to despite any limitations other people placed against him. I enjoy that Professor Flitwick has a great sense of humour and a relaxed attitude to teaching, pupils seem to be well supported by him. He also teaches my favourite subject by miles. All in all, Professor Flitwick is hugely underestimated but larger than life.

- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?

No. I actually like the fact that we Ravenclaws are understated throughout the series, but they make up the very soul of everything that occurs. I feel like each thread that involved a Ravenclaw was meaningful and complex, with layers of meaning that you just did not get with any other houses.

- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?

No! How could I be when that is the motto of Ravenclaw?! As the sorting hat said.. "Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you’ve a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind"... true story, Wil Wheaton has a blog where he wrote about finding out that he was a Ravenclaw after being sorted by the sorting hat. He is a very clever man, so there was no surprise there.

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?

Is it bad that I feel like she deserved what happened? Helena is the reason that her mother died, her greed and jealous streak put the Diadem above all else and the sacrifice was huge. I am surprised that she was susceptible to the charms of Tom Riddle when she herself knew the pull of the diadem. The story is a sad one in and the unrequited love of the Bloody Baron caused un-necessary death.

- What was your favorite article from this issue and why?
Aunt Edna. It was so warm and witty, I couldn't help enjoying it.

- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
Definitely Luna. For a long time she was my favourite character. I am also the odd kid that nobody liked and can relate to her isolation and the teasing she endured. She was kind of inspirational in that she learned to just not care about what others said - it took me until I was much older to achieve the same serenity.

- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
Not necessarily. I feel like JK did most of the houses a disservice in the books, but they were already so full I don't know that they needed to stuff more in. I just think their treatment could have been handled better in the time they did have.

- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
No. I wrote the article

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
Shocked, I guess? But more interested than anything. It's hard to be too shocked at anything involving the history of hogwarts any more.

- What was your favorite article from this issue and why?
Ratings and Reviews. I've seen people mess up book reviews, so it was a pleasure to see a good one. The author was able to give a gist of the plot while not revealing spoilers. She was able to tell the readers both the pros and the cons and why the book is different. She also gave an overall rating and told the reader what to expect. All in all it was an excellent way of presenting a book review.
- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
Garrick Ollivander. He is also somewhat mysterious/weird types like Luna, but I guess he has a different aura around him? I connect with Ollivander because we're both constantly thinking waay more than we're speaking. I mean Ollivander just said, "Well, well..." when he was thinking "Harry Potter and Voldemort share the same wand core!" Also, he prides himself on his memory. I'm no where close to his superb memory but I'm on the path and I do have an eye for details, facts etc.
- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
Definitely! All three houses deserved more attention than they got. Ravenclaws were mentioned only during Quidditch matches and during the search for the Horcruxes.
- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
Not at all. It sounds Ravenclaw-ey, if you know what I mean.
- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
I felt angry at Helena at having stolen from her mother initially. Then the story went such that I hated Tom more than Helena. But somewhere in the back of mind I was always almost impatiently waiting for the knowledge to point towards where Harry will find the Horcrux and destroy it.

- What was your favorite article from this issue and why?
The Wizarding crimes article was good. It was interesting reading what they said about Ravenclaw aurors. Although I still don't agree that Ravenclaws make the best Aurors. I also wonder how a huge crime ring would have been completely unknown to the non-Aurors. If there were big crimes that the Aurors were trying to stop, how did the group remain unknown? And if the group had not established itself yet, then was stopping them really such a massive accomplishment?

- Is there a particular Ravenclaw you relate to in the book series? If so, why?
Probably Luna Lovegood, because she doesn't care what other people think about her and remains true to herself.

- Do you think that the Ravenclaws should have featured more prominently in the book series?
I think the story was fine the way it was. The other houses could have been portrayed more, but the separation between the houses had seemed to be a big thing for much of the series, especially with a few of the sorting hat songs being about the school needing to come together. Having more Ravenclaws as main characters would have changed that and might have taken away from that.

- Were you surprised to see that the Wit Beyond Measure was made up of Ravenclaws?
Yes and no. The name screams Ravenclaw 100%. But the group could just as easily have been Slytherins, acting ambitiously to take advantage of an opening in the economy to become rich.

- How did you feel when you learned how Helena “lost” the diadem?
The whole story was sad, and I felt angry at the Blood Baron.
With actually losing the diadem, I felt bad for her because he had already seen how Voldemort tricked other people to get what he wanted.

The Ravenclaw student we get to know best in the books is Luna I think, and of course she's easy to relate to anyone who's ever had troube making friends. She's quirky but embraces it and isn't ashamed to be different, which is why I think a lot of us geeks are attracted to her character ^_^
Luna is someone who's easy to relate to despite the fact that she's so different from most people, because at her core there are qualities which lie within many of us, in my opinion.

I personally think that both Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff should have been featured more prominently in the book series. We got to see all the Gryffindors through Harry's eyes of course, and quite a lot of the Slytherins because of the strong rivalry between the two houses. But I think that Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were set aside as less special houses, like their students didn't stand out enough to even appear in the books, and that's something that bothered me for a while. Like, Hermione stands out as the smartest person in their year, but do we even know all the Ravenclaw students in their year? One of them might have outshone her. And everyone says that Ravenclaw is the house of the smart / nerdy / book-loving students, but then the one student we get to properly know from Ravenclaw is actually someone who's quirky and whose love for knowledge is very different than what we expected - she doesn't rely on books to tell her what might exist, but rather on imagination and faith. So the house itself doesn't seem to have been portrayed properly.

The whole story with the diadem also didn't seem to fit, because it you are so smart and knowledge loving then it doesn't seem right that you should need a magical object to increase your wit. Unless the whole thing was a myth and the diadem was simply a regular piece of jewlery... But seeing as Helena stole it from her mother, she, at least, seemed to have believed in its supposed qualities. Why would Rowena Ravenclaw even create such an object? Did she actually need it, or is it just a way of seeking to become even smarter?

I really wish we'd get some sort of sequel one day, another story in the HP universe. Hopefully this one will portray Ravenclaw house more prominently.
