Greetings! As you may recall, the theme for January's Quibbler was calendars ! If you missed the January issue, never fear; you can check it out here.

January's Quibbler explored calendars and the Chinese New Year. Regardless of whether you are a Muggle, a Witch, a Wizard, or a Wix, you share one thing in common: the concept of time (and usually the feeling there is never enough of it). This month we'd like to learn more about your Chinese Astrology signs, your use of calendars, and pick your brains for ways we could handle difficult interviewees, like Moaning Myrtle. Here are some questions to consider:

Discussion questions to consider:
- What was your favorite article and why?
-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?
-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?
-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?

- What was your favorite article and why?

I really enjoyed Dangerous Beasts this month. It made me laugh so hard! Plus it reminded e of Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. Beware of rabbits: they have big, sharp teeth!

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?

I am the Year of the Monkey I think, lol, but I do not remember much about it. I tend to follow western astrology more.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?

I only buy a calendar if the art appeals to me. I used to buy either the farmer's Almanac of the Witch's Almanac one every year, but that was when I had my herb garden.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?

I had an Ansel Adams one I really liked. I even saved the pictures and framed them. I used them to decorate my classroom, lol.

I really liked this month’s “You Didn’t Hear It From Us”. It was fascinating. I am rather interested in the concept of time and I love history of all kinds so the premise of the article was interesting to me. Of course then the history stopped about a paragraph through it so that was sort of a let down. My Chinese Astrology sign is a pig, specifically the “wood pig”. Under the influence of the Wood Element, the Wood Pig displays a special blend of optimism and practicality. While other members of their sign look towards impulsiveness, the Wood Pig prefers a hardworking and realistic approach. When combined with their social intelligence, the Wood Pig uses their diligence to become effective diplomats. The Wood Pig can win over others with their generosity and innate kindness, which explains for their gifts for cooperation and team work. While the Wood Pig has a high value for success and financial stability, their greatest concern is family and comfort. I guess it sort of relates to me, but I don’t really have a knack for socializing. I buy and use a wall calendar each year, but mostly for planning out my finals study schedule. I don’t have a favorite calendar. To be honest, I don’t much care about the pictures. As long as it works, I don’t care what it looks like.

welp I'm chinese so i've kind of looked it up 😂
I'm in the year of the goat, and I've always found it kind of cool that i'm also an aries, which means i'm a goat/ram twice over
Honestly, I don't buy too much into astrology. I've never read anything that has been completely accurate for me, and although sometimes certain parts will seem to fit, there are also times when it is the complete opposite of me.

I have a desk calendar as well as a daily planner I get from school. I use my desk calendar for important dates and birthdays, while I use my daily planner to write down things I need to do each day. Both these calendars do help me a little with remembering stuff to do, but I could probably do without. Especially for the daily planner, considering that I always create a schedule and then never follow it 😥 😂

I suppose my favourite calendar would be a star wars one I got this year, but I care more about the functionality than the aesthetics. I don't really remember my old calendars anymore, but I can probably still safely say that this is the best I have had so far considering it is my first fandom one

- What was your favorite article and why?

My favorite article was the interview with Moaning Myrtle. I laughed at all the trouble the interviewer had trying to interview the Hogwarts Ghosts about calendars.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?

I just looked it up for the first time. It was the sign of the pig. The description didn’t fit me perfectly but there were a lot of things in there that did describe me pretty well.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?

I usually get a wall calendar every year but I don’t use it that much. Occasionally I will use it to check a date or something but mostly it’s just a pretty decoration. I use it more for the pretty pictures than to actually organize my life but how much can you write in those tiny little spaces anyway.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?

If I had to pick a favorite one, I think I would go with the one from the Humane Society. I liked the pictures of all the kittens and puppies. I had a different picture for each month.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?

Knowing how temperamental she is I would have been very careful about what I said. I also would have made sure I gave her lots of complements and agreed with her. She thinks everyone hates her so I would have told her how much I liked her and how nice she was. Maybe even gossiped about others. Anything to make her think she was the most important person in the world.

-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?

No, not really. The closest thing to a special memory would be a calendar with pretty pictures on them.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?

I'm born in the year of the Monkey, more specifically of the element water. As if I didn't have enough water in my life from being a Star sign Scorpio with the rising sign Cancer... lol

The water monkey describes me mostly accurately with a few exceptions.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?

Honestly, I only really buy calendars if I like the art. Otherwise I don't really need to buy one, there is after all one on my laptop and phone.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?

Two of my favourite calendars were my Harry Potter ones and my Chippendale ones xD
I like them both for obvious reasons 😉

No. I have no interest in astrology.

My landlord gives us one. I rarely use it. I ot down Doctor's appointments and that's it/ I can keep track of most things without a calendar.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
No...I have no favorites.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
No idea.
-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?
No, I do not have any special memories associated with calendars.

I absolutely adored the article "Dangerous Beasts." The humor in that article was literally right up my alley, and I actually read it a second time to share it with my fiancee (we both very much enjoyed Monty Python and it immediately made me think of that group). With regards to my Chinese Astrology sign, I was born in the year of the boar, so it definitely makes sense XD I am really quite a big ol pig. Beyond that however, the personality doesn't fit very much. I definitely don't buy any calendars, I just use my phone or computer, but I have had a really good planner before that I absolutely loved. Sadly, I lost it almost immediately. It was a sschool planner and had our mascot imprinted on the front and each page had a Bible quote and imagery. I'm not much of a Bible reader, but it was still very pretty and I miss having lost it, especially since it cost 20 dollars I couldn't say what I would do if I ever had to conduct any sort of an interview especially a difficult one like that. I would try to just speak as calmly as possibly.

- What was your favorite article and why?
I loved the superstitions article. The air of scepticism was so unlike normal Quibbler openmindedness it made me laugh, plus the sulky tone. It was also just so melodramatic that it was a joy to engage with.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?
My Chinese zodiac is the dog (loyalty, stubbornness, good teammate). I feel like it describes me to a tee, honestly. Furthermore, 1994 was the year of the wood dog, which has the qualities of honesty, reliability, and consideration. I’m happy to agree with this description.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?
I haven’t bought a calendar for years. I used to buy a wall planner each year through my late high school years, but it didn’t help me stay organised because I always forgot to look at it. I’m the same with diaries. The only thing that helps is putting reminders on my phone that will give me a notification when I have an event coming up.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
I did have a really nice one once which had cute pictures of horses and cats who were friends. Each month had a different horse-cat pairing and they were very sweet.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
Honestly, I’m not sure Dusty could have done much better if she’d tried. Each of the ghosts has their particular prickliness, and as pointed out they can just float away if they don’t like you. Flattery would be my suggestion if you wanted to hold a reasonable conversation with Myrtle – that’s the only thing that seems even remotely useful with her. Making a big thing of how dramatic and impressive her death was and how she might like to keep an eye on the anniversary each year may have been a good lead-in. If there’s one thing she likes to talk about, it’s her death.

-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?
Not really. As I said, I don’t really do calendars, I’m just too absent-minded to look at them. If anything, I would say my family bonding over the horrible religious-cross-stitch sappy dog calendars my grandma would send every year. We all hated them so it gave us a good laugh. We’re awful.

- What was your favorite article and why?

My favorite article was "Weirdeties of the Wizarding World". I simply love the humorous way in which it was written, and the exasperation of the reporter when they faced the new Wizarding World trend. I was raised by Muggles, and although muggle calendars are nowhere as awesome as wizarding calendars, they have their own charm, I can promise you that. I still use them from time to time.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?

Yes, I have. I am very excited about the Year of the Pig so I did read quite a lot on the topic. My Chinese Astrology sign is Earth Rabbit. The accuracy shocked me: I dislike unpleasantness, I'm always trying hard to maintain peace, I love everything to do with art, I am a hard worker and I do need time to plan my moves. I am not a big fan of change unless I prepare myself for it beforehand, and I like to remain on good terms with everybody. I also love collecting vintage stuff.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?

I don't tend to buy calendars each year. However, I am drawn to wall calendars. I use them throughout the year by making notes on them, marking birthdays, holidays, celebrations, free days, paydays, and so on. I use different colors and sometimes even different symbols, and if I get lost into the many colors and symbols that I have used, I stick a little piece of paper with a legend on it. A calendar like that might look messy at first glance but, it gets better with time, I promise. It helps me organize my life, it helps me remember important things and I make small notes whenever there is an important event I have to attend on a certain date.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?

My favorite calendar is a day planner my dad gave me a few years back. It was the first long trip I was taking with him. He used to deliver wedding cakes and whenever he could he would take me with him. So before we went on a 2 hours drive or so, he gave me this day planner that had Tom & Jerry on the cover. It sat around collecting dust for months, because "planning my day" was just a waste of precious pages. I had to do something beautiful with it. In the end, I decided to write poems and lyrics in it. I still have it, and to this day, it stores my creations.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?

I would have approached her differently, but I am pretty sure I would have got the exact same reaction. I guess at first I would have tried to make conversation with her, ask her how her life was (although it would have been hard no matter how I initiated a conversation; she is always extremely hard to talk to), and then slowly try to make my way to the topic - the calendars and if ghosts use them. She would have still got upset but, perhaps after a longer "interview"?
Any tips for interviewing Moaning Myrtle? Sadly, no. Some ghosts (or people) simply can't be approached, and she is one of them. For other difficult interviewees, I would try to let them know that they can open up to the readers. The risks are I get banished from their house by a flying, biting frying pan but, who said being a reporter is easy?

-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?

Aside from the one described previously, a few years back, I was at my grandmother's for a longer period of time. I got my hands on a calendar (she used to have many sitting around the house) and started counting the days until I got home. Being with my grandmother was nowhere near unpleasant, I just loved being at home, in the comfort of my own bed, drinking hot cocoa and watching TV. To this day, I seem to enjoy the exact same thing.

I'm not really a believer in horoscopes and astrological signs, so I never looked mine up. Sure, I occasionally got to seeing what my astrologial sign means, but I never took notice and can't say I really remember it. All I remember is that it felt like some of it was accurate and some of it wasn't, but it was all pretty general and would have half-fitted anybody, you know?
I much prefer the idea of making our own destiny, rather than believing that it's all set in the stars or whatever ^^

Now, getting a calendar for the sake of organizing your life, that is the type of calendar I truly believe in! I buy an organizer every year, so I wouldn't ever have to go a day without my notes and plans. There's a calendar page at the beginning of every month in the organizer, and I often look at it for things that require pre-planning, but most of the time I write reminders to myself about a week before something is going to happen. Or I write chores I want to do on days that I know I'll be more avaliable to do them. I'm really a super organized person and I like to have everything written down

My favorite type of calendar, though, actually belongs to my mom. It's a super sweet cat caricatures calendar that's been used in my family for years, even though it isn't accurate of course. We use it as a birthday calendar only, to mark the birthdays of everyone in the family (extended family included), and some friends of my parents as well. It's just so cute and pretty, and I love the fact that it's a birthday-only calendar ^_^

Another special calendar is one that my grnadmother used to have in her house. My aunt would prepare these special calendars for her every year, with pictures of the grandchildren in them. It made me feel really happy to see that my grandmother is thinking of us all the time, and so that calendar she got every year stood out among all the photos of us she had out. Somehow, the fact that she moved from month to month and found another one of us smiling at her made me feel happy.

I deeply respect interviewers, and I think it's quite difficult to get people to trust and tell you their stories, while on the other hand having to keep in mind that you are pushing to find a story that people will really want to know about. My only recommendation for when you need to interview someone problematic would be to maybe do some homework first. Find out what they like, what might interest them... And be prepared to spend some time getting them to like and trust you, so that they might be more open to talk to you.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?
I have! My astrology sign is a rooster, because I was born in 2005. The rooster represents Rooster is the representative of confidence and intelligence, and I'm pretty good at pretending that I am both of those, even though I'm not really.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?
I don't buy them, but I end up with a bunch of calendars. They're usually a desk and wall one. I generally don't touch them my current one is still on January lol, but I use an online calendar to keep track of general dates and things, instead of a physical calendar. Calendars would help me organise my life a lot more, but I'm too lazy to write things down.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
My favourite one is my current one, which is a cat calendar, which a different cute kitten for each day of the month. It's adorable. It makes me smile every morning when I wake up, and it's also big, so it's really easy to see and read.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
I'd probably be really nice to her, and sympathise with her, and want to know her side of the story, and try and relate to how she feels. It's hard for her to think people care about her, because she's so different. Try to be genuine, and not just talk to her for an interview.

I really enjoyed Things the Ministry Doesn't Want You to Know. I'm glad to hear, that sometimes those calendars are a little bit dangerous as they know what you're up to. Now I know I should be careful with writing appointments. Maybe I will try Muggle calendar to see if it's better.
I have looked up my Chinese Astrology sign. To tell the truth I always forget which sign I am. So I always need to look it up again. I'm Rabbit and what I have read about the description, it's really accurate. It's almost as they were spying me. But one thing is different. It says as I rabbit I should be with certain actions dishonest. But it's the opposite I'm always honest.
I always buy calendar. I really like day planners but I don't usually plan every day because I don't have much appoinments or deadlines. Mostly I write into it the date of new magazine I want to buy. And for this year actually I didn't use this calendar properly. Most of the things I remembered and there was nothing to write into the calendar. So I'm thinking about changing to other calendar like desk calendar. Or even to create my own calendar. Well I will see what I will chose.
To be honest I don't have any favourite calendar. I think it's because I used daily planners, so there weren't any pictures or so. I think if I had calendar of pictures I liked, I think it would be my favorite calendar.
I don't know how would I handled Moaning Myrtle. I think I would try to be really nice to her. Making her feel that I'm friendly and don't want to make fun of her. Well I'm afraid it would went badly because I imagine she would still think I want to mock her.
No, I don't have any special memory associated with calendars.

- What was your favorite article and why?
Hands down is Dear Snape! When I see that article, I literally jump over there to read! It's a real crack-up! He just makes me laugh! I just think it's the best one due to a mental image of his condescending sneer and his demeanor towards the lions, LOL!

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?
No, I haven't, cuz I'm not into that kind of stuff. I went to look it up and I don't like the animal picked for my sign.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?
I have too, due to knowing what I need to do for school otherwise I wouldn't care. I have a planner in my notebook. I don't use the wall calendar but we do have one at home. I guess it keeps me on my toes to know when I have midterms and finals.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
I do like the Harry Potter and LoTR calendars but it's hard to find nowadays since I need to get them early. I like the pictures of the characters but especially if there is a dragon on it. Otherwise I buy anything relative to animals.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
I would have asked her about her life and then slowly slide the calendar questions in.

-We have now entered the Year of the Pig in the Chinese New Year. Have you ever looked up your Chinese Astrology sign? If so, what it is? Did you feel the description was accurate for your personality?
I'm a dragon! I think it's supposed to have something to do with leadership qualities, but other than that I don't know much. I'll lead if I have to, but it's not really my thing. So, nope.

-Do you buy a calendar each year? If so, what type (wall, desk, day planner, etc.)? Do you use it throughout the year or is it just a pretty art piece on the wall? Do you feel it helps you organize your life? Why or why not?
Yes, I use a wall calendar every year. It's great for organization, and for remembering dates and stuff. 10/10 would recommend.

-Do you have a favorite calendar from all the ones you have ever owned? If so, describe it? Why is it your favorite?
Not really. None of them are amazing or especially pretty, I'm mainly just concerned with whether they have enough space to write stuff without being too big.

-One of our reporters had difficulty interviewing Moaning Myrtle. Do you have any tips or advice for reporters on how to handle difficult interviewees such as Myrtle? How would you have handled Moaning Myrtle if you were assigned to interview her?
That's, erm, not really my area of expertise. I'd probably just go in there and bluntly as her straightaway, and if she freaked out I would leave and let someone else try.

-Do you have a special memory associated with a calendar or relating to calendars?
Nope!
