Growing up, Devereaux (wanting to be addressed by her surname only) found that ‘pureblood pride’ is all about appearances. Always look your best, always dress your best, always perceive an image of importance (which was eerily similar to that of arrogance) to the outside world. Hushing up the mistakes made and putting on a show that their mother approved of; like little puppets on strings. Nothing was wrong, they were all perfect.
Except that they weren’t perfect. Devereaux’s father died when she was nine years old, a death that was found to be an “accident”. But she remembers them yelling, she remembers the dishes breaking, she remembers the spell that was said, and she remembers coming in the kitchen to see her father’s lifeless body on the ground. That was the only thing Devereaux was ever proud of her mother for, finally standing up for herself. Finally not letting him hurt them anymore. But after that, her mother only got worse. Perfection, perfection, perfection. Nothing was ever wrong. They were all perfect.
Pandora, her sister, seemed to deal with her father’s death by becoming a miniature version of her mother. She was always on to Devereaux about the way she presented herself, the way she acted, calling it odd. Spewing harsh words when Devereaux would speak thoughts outloud that should have stayed locked up in her head. Over the years it began to eat away at her, and instead of filling that void with self-loathing like her family seemed to dish out like cauldron cake, she it filled with anger. For a long time she didn’t know what was wrong with her, why she acted the way she did when she found she just couldn’t help it. She could never stop and think before things came out of her mouth; no matter how hard she tried. The little details in life fascinated her, having a hard time ever seeing the bigger picture. School was difficult for her in all subjects except Transfiguration, the only thing that came natural to her. But studying? She didn’t have enough focus for that.
But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have ambition. She does; she wants to be everything and then some, she just wants to take the lazy route. Becoming a target in her own home she then proceeded to make other’s the target in school, needing to be seen and feared or maybe even respected in some twisted way. School for her wasn’t about studying, it wasn’t about training for the real world: it was about how much power she could get, even if it was only within Hogwarts. She never had much control over her own life, so now she grasps at every scrap she can, just to feel like maybe she actually matters. She scoffs at love, at kindness, at humbleness… but that might just be because she’s hasn’t met anyone yet to sway her opinion, or anyone who would accept her the way she is, flaws and all.
