Growing up in Finland for Olli Horkonen was hard. It was usually cold due to living near the Baltic Sea. He grew up playing the national popular sport in the country which was Ice Hockey. The hardest part for him was that playing or practicing he would have to be aware of his hypoglycemia. Since a young kid he always had trouble with this and playing a sport did not make it any better for him. Olli was always used to carrying chocolate on him just in case. So on his way to the rink for practice he ended up picking up a Wonka Bar. He had no clue of the search for the tickets going on.

During the practice Olli felt a little funny. He started feeling a little shaky, sweating and his fingers started to tingle. He knew that this was not a good sign he could just tell that his hypoglycemia was setting in. Olli tried to get off the ice and to the dressing room as quickly as he could, but he coach stopped him. He had to explain to his coach what was going on because only his coach knew about this problem, non of the other kids had a clue. No one knew he had hypoglycemia since a kid because on the ice he never showed it and was one of the best.

So as Olli was making his way to the locker room he knew it was getting worse because he was starting to get dizzy. Olli had made it to the locker room just in time, next time he thought I need to keep this near the bench. As he opened the Wonka bar he broke some off to eat and when he broke off a piece of the chocolate he noticed something gold. That is odd he thought and he pulled it out. That is when he realized he had found one of the five Golden Tickets. He just put it to the side and did not see the big deal about it. Until one of his coaches came to check on him and noticed it.

The coach had to explain the big deal about it because Olli had no clue he was still eating the chocolate. As he was bringing his blood sugar up he felt better. All of the symptoms he had earlier went away. That was when he took in the sight of the Golden Ticket and when he read the instructions on the back he could not believe his sight. He was getting a once in a lifetime opportunity to go tour a Chocolate Factory with Willa Wonka. This was very exciting, but he was not prepared for seeing all the cameras around him when the media discovered he had found one.

Soon Olli left with his mother and his brother to go see the Chocolate Factory. When he got there he took in his surroundings and of the other kids who found the Golden Tickets. There were three boys and two girls. The girls though looked like they were rich and snobby. Whereas the guys look like they are down to earth. Maybe he thought to himself I will make a friend here. Hopefully nothing crazy happens and this will be interesting.

Neil had always been a quiet boy. Well, silent, actually. After losing his father and brother the first month of his second grade year, Neil had gone mute for everyone but his mother. He struggled in school, was constantly bullied, had to constantly carry around a notebook to communicate. After losing his brother and father, Neil and his mother were practically destitute, always out of money and having to move around.

Now Neil was 16, a miracle in his mother's eyes considering his brother had died at seventeen. Neil rarely got anything for his birthday, because they never had much money, but for this birthfay, his mother had presented him with a twenty dollar bill and told him to go spend it. It was the biggest treat he could think of, and he thanked her as he headed out the door.

Soon enough he had bought himself two new notebooks and pens and had brought those home to keep them safe before realizing that he had just enough for a chocolate bar for him and his mother. He decided to buy the two chocolate bars, the store owner hassling him to open them, Neil having been previously oblivious.

He opened the one for himself first after having heard the story, looking and seeing absolutely nothing. He had shrugged silently and the owner kept telling him to open the second. As he did, Neil saw a glint of gold, and his eyes widened. Soon people were offering to buy it, and Neil's head spun, and he shook it both to clear it and refuse before sprinting the two blocks home.

He brought it to his mother, where she read it, and they realized it was in two hours, so they scrambled to get ready, dressing better and Neil taking his new notebook and pen along. He had always seen the Wonka factory on the way to school, and knew the quickest way to get there. Soon enough, they arrived, seeing two other gurls and two other boys. He wrote a quick note to his mother, his voice refusing to work around the others, telling her he wondered if he would ever make a friend.

Meeting Mr. Wonka was different. He was quite odd and at times he would pause and zone out. Seems like he was reflecting on something, but what he was reflecting on Olli had no clue. So inside the building he walked following Mr. Wonka. He was next to last in the line of children going into the building. He was amazed when he saw how much bigger it looked inside the building than on the outside of the building.

As they walked down the hall Olli looked left and right. He was seeing columns shaped like Candy Canes, down to the exact color. Some of the columns were more colorful than the other. The next thing Olli noticed was the carpet. It looked somewhat like gum to him, but why would anyone have a carpet that looks like gum. Olli was starting to think that Mr. Wonka was a little crazy in the head because no matter where he looked in this building it seemed like everything was either made out of candy or was made to resemble candy.

Olli looked at his brother and asked him if he too thought Mr. Wonka was a crazy man. Alas his brother did not think he was too crazy. Just as Olli realized Mr. Wonka was talking. He felt bad that he did not realize that the man was talking, it was rude in Olli's opinion to talk over someone. Also he felt bad that he had no clue what was going on. So he went to ask the kid behind him, but thought better of it. From this point on Olli thought I am just going to pay attention and not get distracted.

Soon they got to a room where the door was really tiny compared to the rest of the room. He wondered how they were all going to fit through the door seeing as all the kids and adults were bigger than the door. But slowly in front of him they started disappearing into the room. He was amazed at what he was seeing. Soon it was his turn to go through. He was so unsure how to get through that he let his brother go first. Seeing how his brother bent down a little bit to get through the door he did the same, followed by his mother.

When Olli had went through the door he was amazed at what he saw. Candy everywhere and it was perfect timing because his head was going crazy. He could not think or process what was going on. He realized again that his sugar must be low. Ugh I wish I could just live my life without ever wondering why I cannot do anything without this affecting me, Olli thought to himself. Soon Mr. Wonka let them break away to go explore the room. So he decided to head for a tree with what looked like apples. Healthy he thought with a touch of sugar, but he was wrong. They were not apples, they were more like cotton candy on the inside.

Neil was a thin young boy, far too poor to agford more than one meal most days. And as they made their way inside the factory, Neil looked around, amazed. Things everywhere looked like candy. Though he was 16, his mouth began to water. He had never been able to afford much candy as a kid, only got some when a teacher was feeling particularly charitable. He had never been able to trick or treat due to his anxiety and selective mutism.

Neil paid attention to every word of Mr. Wonka's, absorbing them quite quickly and making notes in his head to take down in his notebook when he got the time. The history behind it all was fascinating. And soon they were coming to a small door, Neil watching everyone have to bend with a frown. He helped his mother through gently before climbing in last of the other children.

His eyes were amazed at everything inside. The landscape was so bright, almost too bright for him to properly take in. As Wonka explained that everything was edible, Neil's eyes went wider than ever. His stomach growled quietly, the mark of a poorly nourished young man, as he was allowed to split away and explore. He kept his notebook close as his mother decided to try and get to know Mr. Wonka.

He was unsure of what to tey first but realized he would want something healthier if he was going to fill up, because sugar wasn't very nutritious at all, and so he slowly made his wah to an apple tree, or what it appeared to be so. He moved to pick an apple before realizing that one of the other boys was there and he backed away a bit unsurely.

He got his notebook ready to write, pulling his pen out of his best black jeans that were still alightly ratty. He only used them for when he had a nicer event, but after so much wear, they were starting to get torn. He looked at the boy, letting him have a chance to speak before he would write his reply.

After taking a bite of the apple and realizing that it taste like cotton candy. Olli saw a boy approach who then backed away when he saw him. Well if I want to make friends this boy will be a good start, he thought to himself. So he picked an apple and then walked over to the boy. "Hi my name is Olli. Would you like some cotton candy?" On that note Olli tossed the boy an apple.

As Olli was looking over the boy he thought the boy looked a little too starved. He has never before seen someone who looks so hungry. Though if he wants to make friends with the boy he best not mention the fact that the boy looks starved. So after tossing the boy an apple Olli looks around again. He sees something yummy a little farther down. Looks like a nut, hoping that it is toffee. Olli goes in for a closer look planning to bring it back to the boy and share it with him.

As Olli gets closer to the nut he realizes that it looks more like a small hockey puck. Hmm that is odd he thought, but I do love hockey so maybe it is just an illusion. He picks a couple and starts to walk back towards the boy. When on his way back he sees a bush of strawberries. This will be good, I bet he will like these I know I will. Finally something healthy. Just when Olli was wishing for more healthy food than candy in this room. He realizes he was just standing there with some of the other kids looking at him. Whoops that is awkward he thought.

So now with the strawberries that look fresh and the nuts that look like tiny hockey pucks. He walks back towards the boy, hoping that the boy will be more talkative than before. Otherwise this might get quite awkward for all of them if this boy does not like him. Maybe if he just gets to know me he will like me. Get out of your shell Olli, stop being shy with everyone and just try to strike up a conversation, Olli said in his head.

"Hi again. I thought you might like some strawberries they look very good and fresh. Also some nuts or at least I think they are nuts. May I ask where you are from? Maybe know more about you? I can tell you more about me if you'd like me to first."

Neil's eyes widened as the apple was tossed at him, and he caught it, flinching. He watched the boy with wide eyes as the boy stepped away to pick more food. He looked at the apple, cautiously taking a bite. It was so sugary that it took Neil a moment to process and he swallowed, stunned. To him, the boy seemed sweet, if a bit overeager. Still, Neil was grateful to the boy for handing him the apple. And he made note in his head that the boy's name was Olli.

Soon Olli was coming back with nuts and strawberries and Neil was flipping his new notebook to a clean page. He had hoped Mr. Wonka wouldn't take it, after having sworn not to reveal anything to someone outside the factory, but it was Neil's only means of communication. And Neil looked at the food almost longingly, having finished the apple.

For starters, Neil pointed to himself, then his throat, and shook his head. He then pointed to Olli, then to his own throat, and nodded, indicating the difference between them so far was that Neil couldn't speak. He held up his finger a moment to tell Olli to wait, so he could answer Olli's questions He wrote in all CAPS typically so that people could read it.

"I'M NEIL DIGIOVANNI. I'M FROM HERE. CAN'T TALK. THANK YOU FOR THE APPLE. THERE ISN'T MUCH TO TELL, BUT FEEL FREE TO ASK ANYTHING."

After Olli read what Neil had wrote he thought it was quite odd that he did not speak. Neil's miming of his throat to mine left me confused, but what he wrote cleared it all up. "Neil why do you not talk? Is there something wrong with your voice?" With those questions asked he decide to wait and see what was going to happen with the boy.

As Olli watched the boy eat he figured he had been over-eager. Thinking he was being rude and abrupt with his questions, he decided not to stick around thinking he had already scared the boy away. So Olli got up from sitting across from Neil and started to walk away. Olli got curious about the chocolate water so he walked towards it. Specifically he walked towards the bridge.

He was studying the bridge trying to figure out if it was strong enough to bear his weight. Looking at the bridge he noticed it was made out of what looked like toffee. What a strange man Olli thought why would he make a bridge out of toffee. Nonetheless he decided to walk across the bridge to explore the other side. Olli somewhat ran across the bridge instead of walking he was way to nervous that the bridge was going to break..

Once Olli got across the bridge he saw what looked like another tree, but that seemed absurd to him. As he got closer he realized it was not a real tree. Taking a piece of leaves off the tree he realized that it was made out of sugar. [i]Everything in this room is way too sweet for me to eat I need to stop otherwise I might get high blood sugar instead" he thought to himself.

Just what I needed Olli mused as he realized that someone was watching him from afar, trying not to be seen. So Olli decides to hide behind the tree he is standing under.

Neil winced silently at the phrasings of his questions, frowning. It wasn't that he wouldn't or didn't, it was that he COULDN'T. He bit his lip, trying to figure out how to explain himself, but he soon felt Olli leaving him and walking away. He frowned sadly as he finished eating, starting to feel nauseous from all the sugar. He swallowed a moment, turning to a new page in his notebook as he merely watched Olli a moment.

He watched Olli run across the bridge, noticing Olli wasn't really eating. And the other 3 children were busy stuffing their faces and so Neil decided to stand. He moved to cross the bridge as well. He walked slowly, carefully, precisely, not wanting to damage anything of Mr. Wonka's. Neil was always respectful of others' things because he had so few possessions to his own name.

He paused before reaching Olli to write an answer to his questions plus a bit more. "MY VOICE STOPPED WORKING RIGHT WHEN I WAS SEVEN AND I LOST MY BROTHER AND FATHER," he wrote in all CAPS. "I'M SIXTEEN NOW. I DON'T HAVE ANYBODY BUT MY MOM. AND THANK YOU, HONESTLY, FOR THE FOOD. I NEEDED THAT."

He stepped over to Olli softly, shyly, as he held out the notebook once more. He hoped the boy would understand.

((OOC: Sorry for the wait, got SO busy.))

Olli saw a notebook being shoved at him and realized that Neil came over. Once he read what Neil wrote he felt really bad. Man I suck at making friends. "Neil I am so very sorry. I did not mean to upset you by leaving. I guess you can say I suck at making friends. I guess I realized we have two things in common. One is that we are both shy and do not make friends easily. Number two is that we both lost our father. I do not really like talking about it, but now that you told me your story you deserve to know mine.

I was a baby when my father died. Something happened at work and he never made it back to us. My mother never told me the whole story and keeps it from me and my brother. I never pressed her because she was always so sad when we mentioned him. When I was about four years old I got diagnosed with hypoglycemia, which is just a fancy way of saying that I had Low Blood Sugar. Was in and out of hospitals for a while until I got the diagnosis.

When I was seven I started playing ice hockey, more due to the fact that it was something my brother pushed me into. I always learned to carry a chocolate bar with me to make sure if my sugar got low I could bring it up. The only way I could afford to play was because of my brother. I do a paper route myself, but he dropped out of school so that he can make money to pay most of the bills. Between him and my mother they barely make enough. So now you know my story, but please do not do what everyone else does and pity me. That is not what I want.
"

Wow it felt very good to get that out, Olli thought to himself. It felt like a million weights had been lifted off his chest. He figured that since him and Neil have so much in common that they would make good friends. I believe this is going to be the start of a wonderful friendship, he thought to himself. Smiling as he sat next to Neil. "Neil do you want some more food or just to maybe talk via paper?"

Neil listened intently to what Olli had to say. He took in every word, processing them separately as though the conversation were the most meaningful thing he had ever heard. He took in the details about his new friend, head cocking as he learned about the ice hockey. And Neil could relate to having a condition that made him the odd one out. He could also relate to the barely having enough money to live on. And lastly, he could relate to the desire to not be pitied.

He began to write his response. "TODAY IS ACTUALLY MY SIXTEENTH BIRTHDAY. I JUST FOUND THE TICKET THIS MORNING BECAUSE MY MOM GAVE ME MONEY SO I FINALLY GOT SOME NEW NOTEBOOKS AND SOME PENS AND CHOCOLATE. AND IT'S BEEN THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER."

He paused a moment to think before writing more. "I REFUSE TO PITY YOU AND I REFUSE TO BE PITIED. I'M LUCKY I HAVE MY LIFE. MY DAD AND BROTHER WEREN'T THAT LUCKY. SO YEAH, I GET YOU. ALSO. ICE HOCKEY? THAT SOUNDS REALLY COOL. I USED TO HAVE A GUITAR AND I WAS REALLY GOOD AT PLAYING IT BUT WE HAD TO SELL IT. I'D ALSO BE GOOD IN SCHOOL IF I COULD TALK. I KNOW EVERYTHING THEY'RE SAYING AND I GET A PERFECT SCORE ON ALMOST ALL MY TESTS, BUT MY GRADES ARE LOW BECAUSE TEACHERS DECIDE THAT BEING NONVERBAL IS BAD. IT'S FRUSTRATING." He smiled gently before adding, "I GUESS THIS ANSWERS YOUR LAST QUESTION. I QUITE LIKE THE CONVERSATION OF SOMEONE WHO'S PATIENT ENOUGH TO JUST LET ME WRITE."

He smiled as he passed the notebook over.

Reading what Neil wrote, Olli had finally come to the realization that he has made a friend. One who he did not want to leave. He was shocked to find out that it was Neil's birthday. "I want to do something special for him, but what can I do for him?" Olli thought to himself. "What if I could find a way to stay here, so he would have at least one friend? That would be nice, but how can I convince them that would be impossible.", he thought. Neil I will be right back I want to go talk to my family. With that Olli walked away.

On his way by his mom & brother he saw what looked like a bush of roses. So Olli decided to pick up a few for his mother hoping to help persuade her. Though they weren't roses they looked like chocolate covered strawberries with nuts & sprinkles. Well that is quite odd, Olli thought why cover strawberries with nuts and sprinkles. This man is just getting weirder and weirder with the things I am finding and eating in this room. Making his way over to his family Olli had to cross the bridge again, but he was nervous because the bridge looked like it was ready to fall apart.

Olli was determining in his head how he could get over to his family without going over the bridge. He saw no other way though so he is just going to have to close his eyes, go slowly, & try to be light as a feather. Soon he started to hear a crack. When he opened his eyes he just finished getting off the bridge, but now Neil would not be so lucky as Olli looked back the bridge was broken there would be no way for Neil to get over here.

Looking around for something anything that would help him get over to get Neil and come back across the chocolate river he found nothing. What if I swam across to get him. Olli was looking at the current of the water and realized if he went to swim across he would be a goner for sure. He was starting to give up hope when he saw something out of the corner of his eye & was amazed at what he saw.
