Letter from the Editor
A comet strokes the sky. I lay on the blanket, gazing at the deep black heavens. My, my, August brings a lot of space adventures. With the eclipse of the sun, my toes tingle with excitement. So does my mind, as I realize I had found the perfect topic for the August 2017 issue of Phoenix Rising. Space! I'm sure all my fellow writers, editors and coders are excited to write this edition of the Phoenix Rising, I hope you enjoy it!

Cultures
Hello everyone this is Tiffwise, from Phoenix Rising News, and since the topic for this month is anything space related I am going to talk about Judaism’s beliefs of life on other planets. Today, we will be focusing on their beliefs on other conscious beings in the universe.

There are plenty of accounts in the Torah, the holy book of Judaism, of the higher angels, who are conscious of a realm of reality far beyond ours. This suggests a belief in life on other planets.

Maimonides and others write about the heavenly bodies as conscious beings—and not simply in an allegorical sense. If anyone were to ask you, “How can a ball of helium and hydrogen contain consciousness?” simply ask in return, “And a warm mass of gray meat having consciousness is reasonable?” these facts show that they may believe in higher beings which would be aliens in today’s world.

It is truly amazing that the uniqueness of humankind is not our consciousness, but the way that consciousness is able to enter the realms of good and evil, make decisions and distinguish between them.

Here I have an excerpt from the Torah which Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson has quoted before: In the Book of Judges,7 Deborah the prophetess sings about the victory of Barak over Sisera. In her song, she says, “Cursed be Meroz! Cursed, cursed be its inhabitants, says the angel of G‑d!”

Where is Meroz, and who are its inhabitants? The Talmud[another holy book] gives two explanations, one of them being that Meroz is a star or planet. The heavenly bodies had also come to help the Israelites, as Deborah, a prophet, stated just one verse earlier, “From the heavens they fought, the stars from their orbits . . .” This star, however, which was the dominant star of Sisera, apparently did not come to their aid. And so, General Barak penalized Meroz—and its inhabitants.

Could these inhabitants be intelligent? The definition of intelligence by the torah means the capacity to make decisions with free will. Free will is only possible where there is Torah, whereby the Creator offers His creatures more than one possibility and asks that they make the appropriate choice. (Torah includes the laws of Noah, which are given to all human beings.) In other words, just as we are created by the Creator's word, so we are provided free choice by His command to do or not do.

So, if there would be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, these creatures would have to have Torah. Could they have a different Torah than us? This isn’t possible, since Torah is truth, and there can’t be two truths.

Could they have the same Torah as us? No, this is also impossible, since the Torah itself describes in detail how the Torah was revealed on this planet, and that account itself has a strong impact on how the Torah is to be fulfilled.

It therefore appears that although it is quite possible there is life on other planets, that life would not be intelligent in a way similar to human life and culture.

And sadly that is all I have time for today, folks. Always remember to fight in the light. This was Tiffwise of Phoenix Rising News signing off.

Newbie Network
For this month, I interviewed Sky Blue 02, who has just come onto HEX.
Here's her response to space!

I was always fascinated in the night sky (I love night time) and wanted to study it. Constellations and Biology have been my two favorite subjects. I don't have a favorite star but I've always liked Neptune. It is also Poseidon, god of the sea (I also love water).
I do believe that there is life somewhere in the Universe. Maybe in another dimension. The Eclipse sounds very exciting and I want to see it. The hard part is that all the hotels with the best views have been booked for over a year!!! There are no specific constellations I like but the history is very interesting. A lot of the constellations are connected to mythology which I love to read.

Thanks for reading this! I hope you enjoy your summer!
